Pro Pundits - Ash

Which relegation-threatened FPL players will be most motivated for season run-in?

Fantasy Premier League managers would do well to consider players at the wrong end of the table when picking their squads for Project Restart.

Even in a normal season, Gameweek 30 is usually when we start identifying which clubs have more to play for than others, and those in danger of relegation always fall into this category.

The fact that we have all been given unlimited transfers makes considering these options even easier.

After all, the form book has been chucked out of the window but the league places remain unchanged.

Those hovering around the bottom end of the table will do everything possible to secure top-flight survival during their final run in.

So, it’s time to look at what’s on offer with a fresh pair of eyes…

Jack Grealish

  • Price: £6.4m
  • Ownership: 21.3%
  • Next four fixtures: SHU + CHE | new | WOL | liv

A player under £7.0m with 14 attacking returns in less than 30 games is one that simply can’t be ignored.

In many ways, it’s puzzling to think how a player of Jack Grealish’s (£6.4m) calibre is playing for a 19th placed Premier League team than one challenging for European honours. If things had been different he would have been a full England international by now.

In my view, he is a must-have for the final run-in, for several reasons.

Firstly, Aston Villa will be featuring in the Double Gameweek with two games at Villa Park. Of course, the ‘home factor’ may be less significant with the absence of fans but they are must-win games for Dean Smith’s men.

At this stage, they cannot afford to sit back and hope for the best. They will have to go for goals, even if they concede a lot in the process.

Since August, among all sub-£7.0m players, Grealish is top for goals scored, second for final third touches (836) and second for shots.

He the absolute talisman for Aston Villa too, having been involved with 41% of their Premier League goals this season. You would need to have a really good reason not to have him in your FPL team.

Teemu Pukki

  • Price: £6.5m
  • Ownership: 12.9%
  • Next four fixtures: SOU | EVE | ars | BHA

At the start of the season, it seemed that Teemu Pukki (£6.5m) could do no wrong. He began his Premier League career by scoring six goals in the first five games, becoming the first real bandwagon of the campaign.

But by Gameweek 13 Pukki and the Norwich attack seemed to be finished, as he failed to score in eight consecutive matches.

Since then it has become clear that the Norwich forward likes to score in batches, going on a run of goals before tailing off again.

This kind of pattern is frustrating but at least we know that his next purple patch could always just around the corner. Will we have to wait for long?

He may be completely overlooked by many FPL managers as Norwich don’t have a Double Gameweek but their fixtures in the next few weeks do have some appeal.

And, as far as value is concerned, he compares well with similarly-priced assets this season.

Among forwards priced at £6.5m or less, he ranks second for penalty area touches (158) and second for goal attempts (74).

Only Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.5m) has scored more goals than him in that price category.

In keeping with the theme of targetting players with something to motivate them, I think there could be a strong case of sacrificing a Double Gameweek 30+ player for Pukki.

Norwich cannot afford any more slip-ups and face a Southampton team who appear to be relatively safe from relegation first-up.

But even after that, the Canaries face Everton, Arsenal and Brighton, all of whom have had defensive issues this season, so even if you were to go all-in for the Double Gameweek, I think you could consider him beyond it if you’re Free Hitting or Wildcarding in the near future.

Ismaïla Sarr

Watford and Wolves double-up for Gameweek 22 Scout Picks
Ismaila Sarr celebrates a goal for Watford
  • Price: £6.4m
  • Ownership: 2.7%
  • Next four fixtures: LEI | bur | SOU | che

Ever since Nigel Pearson was appointed manager at Vicarage Road, Watford have defied the odds and have shown their strength as a tough unit to beat. Their win against an unstoppable Liverpool team was a sign of how far they have come.

One player of the most influential players for the Hornets pre-lockdown was Ismaïla Sarr (£6.4m).

Since Pearson arrived in Hertfordshire, the winger has scored four goals and registered four assists.

To give you an idea of just how tricky he has been to defend against, he has attempted more take-ons than the likes of Harvey Barnes (£6.2m) and Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) this season, despite not being a first-team regular for much of the campaign and missing out through injury too.

Also, Sarr has only scored one less goal than Mason Mount (£6.2m) despite registering almost half as many minutes as the Chelsea man.

As with Pukki, there’s a strong case to have Sarr in your team as early as next week.

Watford may be out of the relegation zone but they will certainly need to score more goals to keep afloat and if there’s anyone that will be producing substantial attacking involvements for them it will be the Senegal international.

Callum Wilson

  • Price: £7.4m
  • Ownership: 4.7%
  • Next four fixtures: CRY | wol | NEW | mun

It has not been the best of seasons for Callum Wilson (£7.4m) or Bournemouth, but he did show some promise just before March’s coronavirus outbreak.

In the last six matches before the league was suspended, the mid-priced forward found the net three times.

Now, whether Wilson can instantly get his scoring touch back after a long break does remain to be seen.

That said, his struggles in front of goal haven’t been for lack of trying this season.

After all, he has more penalty area touches than the fellow forwards Troy Deeney (£6.2m) and Calvert-Lewin this season. And for strikers priced £7.5m or below, Wilson is fourth-highest for big chances created, hinting at some assist potential too.

Bournemouth are due to face Crystal Palace and Newcastle United in two of their first three games back from lockdown and perhaps those tests could be an early indication of where Wilson is at.

In the last 12 months we have seen two different sides to the England international.

Last season he registered 26 attacking returns as Bournemouth finished 11 points away from the relegation zone in 14th place.

But despite some early promise in 2019/20, Wilson went on a completely barren spell between Gameweek 8 and 23 with his price duly falling by £0.5m in the process.

But we know this is a man with proven Premier League and international pedigree, so maybe all he needed was some rest and bit of luck on his side again. Only time will tell.

Who would you suggest as 5th defender for a bench boost team? I already have 3 players from SHU. I can get Targett but then would have to take someone else for McGinn. No defenders look appealing for me frankly speaking...

Grealish, McGinn and Reina. I don't trust Villa's defence, but Reina can at least get some save points if they don't get celan sheet. Any other popular goalkeeper choices?

Personally I would rather punt on Targett for attacking returns, and get a SGW keeper instead of Reina. (Their is some buzz on here that his place may be under threat from Nyland).

Looking ahead although admittedly there's too many unknowns to really plan but please humour me, where would you be looking to improve this team when my FH reverts back? Tempted to just BB in 31+ then get rid of second playing keeper to put the funds elsewhere.

Essential DGW players? Trying to balance my side so it can last 2, maybe 3 GWs before I WC. Have to keep TAA, Mane, Jimenez due to money I have in them.

Right now thinking only KDB, Stevens & Baldock, Aguero, and maybe Grealish.

Yes, see lots of people getting DGW players in, aiming for 12. I think they are overlooking some SGW players who will probably outscore the likes of Villa defenders for example.

WC for those who have it is so vital. We dont know the minutes or form of players. So if a balance can be struck for the DGW, and you play BB, then WC 2-3 weeks in you could have a big advantage.

Agree with your 'essential' players. Don't think Grealish is essential but just a good pick. One of Sterling / Mahrez is too I think.

I'm still undecided on FH30+/ BB30+. I have a ridic low TV - how many do you have invested in each of TAA / Mane / Jim out of interest?

      1. Lav
        • 7 Years

Yep, I just dont know who my City third will be yet. I am still gonna BB this week, but with a balanced side. WC 2-3 weeks in as I said. FH last week I think, unless injuries/form play my hand earlier.

        TAA - £7.2m PP
        Mane - £11.6m PP
        Jimenez - £7.4m PP

With that much value tied up in 'essential' players, it appears a very good strategy. I only have 0.3m invested in TAA/DCL and 0.2m invested in Bruno/DCL respectively which is minimal enough to let them go IMO?

With my poor pre-Covid team below I'm leaning towards BB30+. Would you say that is best if I'm going to be letting everyone go and foregoing TV?

          Guaita | Button
          TAA | Pereira | Holgate | Williams | Rico
          Salah | KDB | Fernandes | Traoré | Dendoncker

Yeah thats why I am going with that strategy. Also have money in Vardy but he simply has to make way for Kun I feel, unless I find space.

Dont be afraid to drop DCL, but I would keep Bruno. Would say BB is best after you make some moves yes.

My thinking is surely Klopp will rotate and give exposure to other players to blood them for next season and beyond?

Is it really worth chasing a record PL points total? Hard to say...

I would think so too. I don't think many are thinking about this just yet with the game just opening up (DGW, unlimited transfers, etc.) but I'm trying to plan ahead now

The way I see it there are at least two big reasons not to bench boost:

    1) Is it worth it just for one (1) extra game from a Villa player? The main attraction is the DGW of course, but the only way there's going to be a DGW player on the bench is if I triple up on Villa. Surely we can't expect Villa defenders* to outscore most good SGW options?

*I say defenders because the other option is to triple up on Villa attack, for whatever reason!

    2) Who knows what football is going to be like when it returns? Obviously there are going to be more substitutions and injuries, but the form book has reset - we have no idea who's going to play well, or even who's going to play at all after what has been a three-month break with a tiny pre-season.

Can anyone convince me it's still a good idea to play BB?

The thing is that the DGW makes more players good value. If I sort my team by RMT points my bench will be: TAA, Doherty, Jimenez and Leno. In a normal GW they would be in my first team.

The way I see it, the BB is ineffective now anyway with this new schedule of fixtures. It's just one DGWer on the bench at best. But I think I'd rather use it now and take cash off the bench and spend it in my starting 11 for the rest of the season than have cash on the bench all the way until I use the BB.

Yeah that's probably the only advantage the way I see it - BB now and then immediately clear the more expensive options off the bench with a WC or something. It would be a bit annoying though if I ended up using it because I'm pretty happy with my team the way it is now.

Imo BB is comfortably the most overrated chip. It messes with people's minds. I'm looking at this as an opportunity to get it out of the way (with the bonus of the unlimited FT in the same week). That way I can wildcard next week without thinking about how I'm gonna play it further down the line and maximise the money in my XI (no 2nd keeper, 3.9 5th defender etc). It's not that I think this is a particularly good week to bench boost, I just feel it plays into a strategy I'm more comfortable with for the rest of the season. And tbh, this week has the highest ceiling of a BB chip you're likely to see for the rest of the season anyway (assuming no more dgw).

I don't really see the 'highest ceiling' bit given that at most there's going to be one DGW player on the bench (and he's going to play for Villa), but I agree with the other points. I might end up playing just to get it out of the way and set up my team without cash tied up on the bench the week after.

I need a mid for 4.7 who is the best option?

I have McCarthy as my 2nd keeper which puts me off Cantwell but he may have to do?

Debating in my head when to BB/FH/WC.
I like most of my players tbh and scared of messing it all up by going all in on a BB this week.
    Definite keepers- TAA, KDB.
Possibles- Not very keen on moving out- Maguire, Saiss, Fernandez, Salah, Jota.

    Current team-
    Pope.
    TAA, Maguire, Saiss.
    KDB, Fernandes, Salah, Barnes.
    Auba, Jota, DCL.
    Stekelenberg, Stephens, Holgate, Dendoncker.
    3.2m ITB.
    WC, FH, BB left.

Same concerns. Was planning on going with 12dgwers and BB followed by a WC. Feel like it makes more sense for me to FH with my current team in good shape.

Thoughts on this Gw30+ FH team

    Hendo
    Alonso, Baldock, Lundstram
    Kdb, Pépé, Mahrez, Grealish
    Aguero, Auba, Abraham

Reverts back to this team for gw31

    Pope
    Doherty, Maguire, Tanganga
    Salah, Manè, Kdb, Fernandes
    Jiminez, Ings, Jota

    McCarthy, Lascelles, Taylor, Cantwel

Yeah but not sure it guarantees him a starting place in both games, with his contract situation and all. But since you've got Hendo and Baldock, you're covered with SHU defence so it's actually worth taking the risk with Lundstram

No good asking me, 😀 I've changed my team about 40 times now. I've just put Henderson back in place of Leno to swap Fleck for Pulisic, I'm only going with 8 DGW players as I just can't get in to any other Arsenal bar AUB.

Sorry guys, dumb question and sure it's already been asked - how does it work if I want to play FH this week? Will my team revert back to my old team for GW31 or can I set a brand new team now for GW 31+, then hit FH and set my team for GW 30?

Way too many people talking up pool players game time being affected. It will to an extent but nowhere near justifying not having a couple of them. TAA or Salah can get double digits in an hour easy. Plus the fixtures after city are good. The club and fans and klopp will want to close out the season in style imo to prove a point

Aye, here's a chance to set a record points that might never be broken., however a very clued up Lpool supporting mate of mine reckons Klopp will use this to blood a lot of youngsters.

    Hi everyone !

Planning to BB in 30+ and FH later (probably 38+). With no WC left, I'm trying to find the right balance between DGW players and SGW players I want to keep long term and I really like what I've come up with. Could use some extra input there :

    Henderson, Leno
    TAA, O'Connell, Saiss, Taylor, Lascelles
    Salah/Mané, KDB, Fernandes, Grealish, Barnes
    Kun, Jimenez, Nketiah

Plan would be Kun > Rashford in 31+ and Grealish > Son in 32+.

    Anything you would change?

You might want to rethink Henderson as he has a fixture less, maybe go with Pope and bring a cheaper sub in. Although Sheff have the better run in.

      1. LE CHARO
        • 4 Years

Yeah, one of the keepers will have to go at some point. But there's no problem for GW31, Leno will play. And getting Pope would mean doubling up on Burnley's defence when they play City away, that would be a waste of my BB.
