Little to concern defences of Liverpool and Burnley after bore draw at Brighton

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-0 Newcastle United

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Dan Burn (£4.5m) x3, Lewis Dunk (£4.8m) x2, Mathew Ryan (£4.7m) x1

The two-word album review for Spinal Tap’s Shark Sandwich sprung to mind as Brighton and Hove Albion secured their Premier League safety with a goalless draw against Newcastle United.

Chances of quality were scarce in a desperately poor game that had a whiff of ‘pre-season friendly’ about it, although that was perhaps unsurprising given the frequency of fixtures over the last fortnight, the low stakes (Albion were pretty much already safe anyway) and the absence of a crowd.

Interest in these two teams is limited from a Fantasy perspective, with not one player on show having an ‘effective ownership’ of more than 4% in the top 10,000.

Brighton and Newcastle’s opponents in Gameweek 38+, Burnley and Liverpool, are much more in-demand, however, so this would have been a scouting mission of sorts for owners of Nick Pope (£5.1m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) et al.

On the basis of what we saw last night, there was little to worry FPL managers going big on the Clarets or the Reds – especially at the back.

The Magpies only forced one save out of Mathew Ryan (£4.7m), with the Australia international having to be alert to palm a Miguel Almiron (£5.8m) flick away from goal.

Most of the visitors’ threat came from set plays, with Dwight Gayle (£5.0m) glancing a header over just before half-time and substitute Andy Carroll (£5.4m) nodding an excellent opportunity wide late on.

So long as Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.3m) is fit, then Newcastle pose a danger to any side’s clean sheet and he’ll be the main concern for owners of Liverpool assets this weekend.

The Frenchman recovered from a calf problem to start at the Amex and showed glimpses of his talent but couldn’t do much with what little possession he was afforded, not registering a single shot or key pass.

At the other end of the pitch, Martin Dubravka (£5.1m) saved smartly from Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) and Adam Webster (£4.4m), with the Belgian also hooking a decent chance over in the final quarter of an hour.

A 0-0 was about right, though, and anyone targeting Trossard and Neal Maupay (£5.7m) for this meeting against a patched-up Newcastle defence who were without five recognised centre-halves were left short-changed.

That makeshift backline will be of interest to owners of Salah and Sadio Mane (£12.2m), who will no doubt give it a sterner examination on Sunday.

Danny Rose (£5.3m) and Emil Krafth (£4.3m) played either side of Federico Fernandez (£4.6m) in a back three, with Matt Ritchie (£5.3m) and Javier Manquillo (£4.3m) tasked with wing-back roles.

Steve Bruce said of his side’s display after the match:

Considering the problems we’ve had, I was delighted. The one thing you can’t deny about this group of players is their ability to roll their sleeves up and have a go.

We played two full-backs as centre-backs today and they were terrific. I was delighted with their attitude.

Emil’s got a really sore ankle and did well to carry on, but I think he epitomised the spirit of all them.

Three of Brighton’s backline hoovered up the bonus points, while Tariq Lamptey (£4.1m) has now started six of Albion’s last seven league games and is a budget defensive option going into Gameweek 38+, with Burnley themselves not renowned for scoring an abundance of goals.

The Seagulls may have been put to the sword by the two Manchester clubs and Liverpool recently but against the rest of the top flight, their defensive record is a bit better: Ryan has conceded 26 goals in 25 matches against non-big-six sides, keeping eight clean sheets along the way.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-3-3): Ryan; Lamptey (Duffy 86′), Dunk, Webster, Burn; Bissouma (Propper 73′), Stephens, Mooy (March 58); Gross (Mac Allister 58′), Maupay (Murray 73′), Trossard.

Newcastle United XI (3-5-2): Dubravka; Krafth, Fernandez, Rose; Manquillo, Bentaleb, Shelvey, Almiron (Lazaro 86′), Ritchie; Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 74′), Gayle (Carroll 74′).

A clue has been dropped as to why Pearson and Watford parted ways. It’s speculated that he had a money clause in his contract for keeping Watford up. Ditching him prior to it’s confirmation means they were able to circumvent this clause.
I don’t dislike Watford as a club but that board..

When was his contract expiry? They would owe him whatever balance to end of contract... but if it was expiring at the end of the season then that's some very cutthroat behaviour from Watford's BOD

the athletic article cited a number of reasons, still seems bad form as if the league started when Pearson took over Watford would be 12th, what does the board exspect.

Their record with him was very odd though

His first match was on the 7th December, and by 12th January they had gotten 14 points from a possible 21...

They then proceeded to get 5 points from the next 33

Before a couple of quickfire wins last week vs. Norwich & Newcastle then losing to West Ham

Overall that's 25 points from a possible 63, which as you say is 13th in the form table since he came in

Tinkering with my FH38 team to such an extent I've almost forgotten about GW37...

Man City team news tonight will obviously have a big bearing on FH38 decisions but my drafts so far are suggesting I'll have to sacrifice one of KdB/Sterling (to Dilva/Mahrez, not too bad), Antonio or Bruno. And that's with a very cheap defence.

Hopefully things will become clearer after tonight's team news but, if you're tripling up on City attack, would downgrading KdB or Sterling to Dilva or Mahrez make most sense?

              Martinez
              Pieters Bardsley Aurier (could change)
Salah Sterling Dilva Antonio Bruno (could change to Martial)
              Kane Jesus

Fodder bench with Nketiah first on it.

Main thoughts are around Dilva position and whether to keep TAA or not. That would require further cuts in midfield, so I think I'll go without TAA.

              How about you?

                This is my cheap defence team;
                Martinez
                Pieters, Bardsley, Branthwaite
                Mané, Sterling, D.Silva, Martial
                Kane, Jesus, Auba

                This is my team with TAA;
                Martinez
                TAA, Pieters, Bardsley
                Sterling, Dilva, Martial, Antonio, Salah
                Kane, Jesus

Will be something around these lines so not a million miles apart. Which do you prefer?

So basically the cheaper defence gets me Auba. And I need Mané over Salah for funds

                    They both look really good.

Auba could explode against Watford but he could underwhelm too. Really tough choice as TAA, as we know, can be so good but if Liverpool concede it could get quite flat.

Right now, to maximise the FH differential potential, I think I would maybe go with the top-heavy version, do the unthinkable and go without TAA.

                    What's your hunch?

Going to monitor the games closely this week as that might make things change a little but I am leaning towards the heavy top front. I've not played as long as you but I get the same feeling. I played years ago (BBC, Channel 4, early official FPL years) but I was so casual I can barely remember any of it.

Really got into FPL a couple of years ago, got in the top 50k last year, so I'm behind a lot of the experienced folk on here but I like this site as a community and a place to chat, exchange thoughts and ideas.

I've been in the top 10k a few times this season (as recently as a couple of weeks ago) so if I could get back in there I'd be chuffed, but my desire to win my MLs has taken over in the past few weeks. That's what really gets me hooked on this game!

But back to the point, this feels like a season when a lot of so-called casuals got into the game in a bigger way. My MLs have increased in size and competitiveness hugely. I used to coast them without trying, forgetting deadlines etc. Now it requires serious thought - hence why I'm on here!

Thanks mate. I've been making notes as I go along this season. I've stewed on a few mistakes but then kept a record of them in a draft note, so hopefully I can learn from them!

I think the problem I've had in the past with reviewing my notes from the last season is, each season is different and it's dynamic. Something you learnt last season could all of a sudden stop applying, I think review your notes but also be ready to adapt when needed. Also cygan what a legend

Haha! Thanks! Got to keep his legend going. And yes, you're right, that's a great lesson in itself: have a plan but be dynamic, be flexible and ready to adapt.

Maybe but I kinda think this at the end of every season then revert to old traits again.

                    Lessons learned this season:
                    - Just set and forget Pope for the love of God
                    - Don’t ignore in form players just because I think they are a flash in the pan (this season I ignored Grealish, Tammy and Soy through all their good runs)
                    - Be less wild with my captain picks
                    - Be more patient, less hits
                    - Save a chip for 38

Other thing as well, is just okay for OR. Forget mini leagues until beat the end. Having a good OR translates into a good mini league position anyway. Focussing on a mini league makes you make worse decisions imo, for instance Aurier might be doing really good but your mini league rival has him so you try find someone else instead. Just get the better player regardless of who has him

This is genuinely my biggest lesson, I spread myself too thin focussing on all my ML rivals and every week felt like a bad week as any one of the seperate leagues could have a rival that outscored me. A quick glance at their teams is probably a good thing, but I went too far

This is a very good point, and partly why I've struggled the past few weeks I think. Better to try and play your own game. It's when it gets to the last few weeks of the season it gets harder to stick to that ethos! Like a golfer switching from playing at a major to matchplay!

Very true, I usually make a quick bullet point list of what I've learnt but then the new season starts and I'm back to acting on emotion!

Agree with all of those except maybe the last one, there's optimum times to play a chip for sure but ultimately any random week could turn out to be the best week for that chip depending on your players

I’ve played this so long that I don’t learn anymore from the game. So much luck involved. I’ve had 3 Top 1k finishes and 5 top 5k finishes between 2010 and 2015 and struggle to get back in the top 10k nowadays. I’m blaming the chips.

I’d agree with this. There’s 3 or 4 x more managers now plus all the info available in Twitter, here etc. The playing field has been well and truly levelled.

Yeah, I guess so much more info is given out nowadays 10yrs ago, I was prob able to gain from info on here that perhaps wasn’t readily available to others. Captaincy choice has always been an issue, but I would rather those chips went as it’s another layer of randomness.

Was thinking this before, concerns me a bit waiting for early team news and only having five mins or so to make the changes and confirm the team. Imagine if the site went down..
The traffic on the site at that time will be very high imo, and I expect there will be a lot of people still playing with their teams and utilising early info.
It’s possible imo it could go down

                            Which transfer(s) do you prefer?

                            A) Salah -> Sterling
                            B) Bruno/Martial -> Dilva
                            C) Salah + Jimenez -> Dilva + Kane/Auba (C) -4
                            D) Jimenez + Fernandes -> Nketiah + Sterling -4 (Dunk or Nketiah to start)
                            E) Fernandes + TAA to Tarkowski + Sterling -4
                            F) Jimenez + TAA to Tarkowski + Kane/Auba -4

Will obviously observe how many minutes the City and Arsenal players get before making any decisions. Just like some pre-game thoughts about the transfers. Leaning towards B, but worried about going without Kane, Auba and Sterling.

KdB, Sterling and Foden owner here, and nervous about their combined prospects of playing.

KDB and Jesus with Foden first sub.

With the way I've been leaving points on the bench recently, Foden will haul and Jesus will come on as a 90th-minute sub to block him.

Next season I would like to join some cash leagues 😀 however, where to find and enroll usually for these? Do you recommend any?

Better to have leagues with people you know. The seldom few will join but won't pay their subscription so have a deadline for payment. No sub, no league. I hate the leagues that pay player if the month and/or quarter. Players lump a load of chips to get first few. Ideally, for me, it*D be winner take all. Top after GW38 gets everything, though I've never seen a league that will.

Last night of the Championship regular season tomorrow.

Got your eyes on anyone for next season's FPL?

It will be interesting to see if Brentford get promoted (automatically or play-offs) as they have a lot of exciting players.

As the only confirmed promoted team so far, anyone you're interested in at Leeds? Ayling gets forward a lot from right-back but it will probably be a case of waiting and seeing how they defend at PL level...

Nothing stands out this year does it.

                              Watkins maybe fixture dependant

True. Even Leeds and West Brom don't excite much. Will be interested by the price points though - that could change things.

What an incredible run for the bees since restart, but unfortunetely they bottled it vs Stoke and I dont think West Brom will not win vs QPR at home....

That's the thing, isn't it? And there's not much to excite in that West Brom squad, FPL-wise.

I've been researching this a few days ago and there isn't really anyone new that stands out other than the likes of Mitrovic, Austin who used to play in PL anyway.

Benrahma will probably leave, not sure whether Watkins will be good enough for PL, Leeds attacking returns shared across a lot of players and while Ayling looks good attacking-wise, I suspect Leeds will concede loads in PL.

Also Bamford could be an option if they don't sign anyone new as a first choice striker.

Solid research. Yeah, Mitrovic could be a steady option around the 6m mark and, until Leeds sign someone better, Bamford could be a 5/5.5 option which you could rotate. As you say though, problem with Leeds is spread of goals. Will Hernandez be as effective in the PL? Probably doubtful.

                              Brentford: Benrahma, Watkins, Pinnock, Mbuemo

Soucek's stats for the past 6 gameweeks are quite startling.. beats every midfielder in the game apart from Salah and Antonio over the past 6 games for shots and shots in the box. Up there with pen box touches too. What a buy he could be as an enabler

Saw this earlier. The only thing is I think you can afford a great front 7 on a FH without the need for him.

Hope he is priced around 5.5 next season

He's first on my bench in current setup.

" No mention of Christian Pulisic in the broadcast section of Lampard's presser. The Chelsea boss said Pulisic was "dealing with an injury" ahead of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final and the American was an unused substitute in that game."

Is this "No Mention" in a good way, or a bad way?

                              Good question

Can’t imagine Lamps would have put him on the bench if he was injured. I’d say he’s fine.

I’m probably going to play him 38, with Armstrong 1st sub in case, I think Chelsea are being massively underestimated, think if he plays he scores ... It’s crazy how I all of a sudden want Jesus in my team so need to raise 2m...

Wolves at home ain’t gonna be easy, though. For that reason I got rid of Pulisic last week for Mané.

If you could only pick one for GW38+...

                            A) Salah
                            B) Martial/Bruno

How insane is going from KDB and Jesus -> Son and Kane

I think you’d have to be very lucky for that to work out.

At least both Kane and Son will start.

I'm 1 point behind my mini league leader who has played his FH this week.

Basically it comes down to my Fabianski, TAA, Foden, Salah, Fernandes(C),and Greenwood versus his Sterling,Fernandes,Martial(C),
                            and Jesus.

Looks bad for me doesn't it?
