Guide to Scottish Fantasy Football

Introduction

So, what now?

After the longest season in FPL history ended with a frantic 92 game burst in 39 days, suddenly the music has stopped. Well if the appetite is still there for more then why not consider a fantasy staycation this summer and give Scottish football a go? The season starts this weekend!

The first thing to be aware of is there are two games to choose from. The official game has a wacky rulebook that encourages deeper thought, heavier number-crunching and constant squad review. It is not for the faint-hearted. However, this article will focus on a newly launched alternative – www.fantasyfootballscotland.com. It is a purely app-based affair (Apple / Android) supported by a particularly enthusiastic twitter presence (@fantasyscotland).

Game Guide

The first thing to say is that this is essentially an FPL clone. It was originally launched last year but had to be pulled when it was not quite right – and it’s come back this year completely rebuilt, looking very slick and with a determination to prove itself.

Squads are 15 players in the recognisable 2-5-5-3 structure. Budget is a stingy £60m, and you can only have 6 old firm players anyways with 3 per club limit.  Transfers include 1 free per week and -4 hits for any further moves. The difference is that there appear to be no rolling free transfers! There is no Free hit chip but everything else is present and correct. Price Changes to be based on transfers.

Points are largely per FPL but with some noteworthy differences. The biggest change is that there are no bonus points. To make up for that the Vice-Captain becomes more powerful as they yield 2x points for clean sheets (GK & DEF) or goals (MID & ATT). Another couple of things to notice are clean sheets are worth 5pts and a blanket -2 for more than 2 conceded. Penalties won / conceded are worth +2 / -2 respectively, in lieu of an assist but regardless of whether they are converted. There is also a 2pt bonus for hattricks.

Substitutes are designed to automatically bring on your highest scoring option within formation rules. For example, it is possible to let the game do work by fielding 2 non-playing midfielders and getting the best 2 out of 3 playing options on the bench! (Credit to @FPL_Audit for pointing out. Sneaky!)

Player Guide – Old Firm

So that all seems do-able right? But who the heck to pick?! Well I found myself in the same position last year attempting to play the official game, despite being a Scot had found myself unable to name 15 players in the domestic game. Oops. I did manage to make it to 16th place when the season was cut short, so allow me to impart some of what I learned.

The Old Firm are a class above the rest but beware they have been priced as such. The first thing to note is that they have (identically) tight defences. Both managing 15 clean sheets in 30 games last season and both conceding just 7 at home and 12 away goals. Helpful symmetry! There were only 3 players with more than 15 attacking returns last year so with 5pt clean sheets there is certainly value in old firm defenders.

First names that jump off the page are Rangers nailed on full-backs James Tavernier (£5.5m) and Borna Barisic (£4.2m). They both possess a wicked delivery and managed 7 assists apiece and a few goals too – with the former on penalties. That is a total of 25 returns including clean sheets, in line with the contribution of all but one attacking option in the game. Yeah, baby! Although do not overlook the ever-present Gers centre back Conor Goldson (£3.0m) who has been very kindly priced and even chipped in with 3 goals himself.

Celtic switch between 3-5-2 and 4-2-3-1 which plays havoc with full back / wing back rotation. It is probably better looking at nailed centre back pairing of cultured young Norwegian Kristoffer Ajer (£4.3m) and gangly Frenchman Christopher Jullien (£5.5m), who both contributed a few goals and assists, with the latter particularly looking a danger in opposition boxes.

Celtic are more potent attacking options, managing 89 goals at almost 3 per game to Rangers 64. However, they both have a mixture of explosive and dependable options to consider in midfield and up front. Odsonne Edouard (£8.5m) managed 21 goals and 9 assists in just 27 appearances and its hard to look past him for perma-captaincy. It might be best to treat Gers counterpart Alfredo Morelos (£8.5m) with more caution due to a collapse in form since Christmas and a fondness of a card (7 yellows and 2 reds seen as a massive improvement on seasons passed!) .

Celtic winger James Forest (£8.5m) is the midfield premium with 10 goals and 15 assists and tends not to miss a game. While Ryan Christie (£7.5m) can be more explosive with 11 goals and 10 assists in just 17 starts and 7 sub appearances – but can be prone to more rotation. It is also worth picking out two more moderately prices options to consider from Celtic. Firstly, the dynamic centre midfielder Callum McGregor (£5.5m) who played all but 18 mins last season and certainly no attacking slouch with 9 goals and 6 assists, helped by a share of penalty kick duties. The second the perhaps familiar Mohamed Elyounoussi (£4.9m) hit 4 goals and 2 assists in 7 starts in a stop start season but begins this time as the 1st choice and on form left winger, but will probably rotate a little depending on formation.

Rangers midfield options lack an established track record but could easily provide slightly cut-price explosive options. Son-of-legend 20-year-old Ianis Hagi (£6.2m) only arrived at Ibrox in January. With only 1 league goal in 6 starts he is a punt, but he has shown signs of an x-factor, advanced position and a bit of pre-season form that passes the eye test. Winger Ryan Kent (£6.0m) has 7 goals in 18 starts but is the big money signing and seems to be getting better as he settles in. These two will start as 1st choice support to Morelos in a 4-3-3. The third option is the increasingly attacking Nigerian central midfielder Joe Aribo (£5.0m). His 3 goals and 7 assists in 25 games probably just him getting started, displaying a head-turning presence when in full flow.

For sure you will want 6 of the above, with defence clearly providing the unmissable value, but the attack providing the potential upside to go after the form & fixtures. But who will the other 9 be?

Player Guide – Best of the Rest

No doubt there is a more random element to the remaining teams and players. The well managed Aberdeen have been the most consistent ‘best of the rest’ over the last few years. Motherwell matching them last season and Hibs would also be considered in tier 2. The old firm rarely lose to anyone home or away although a couple more draws creep in away from home – but you don’t expect much when your non-old firm options go up against them. Hearts relegation also reminded that no-one is really safe, and anyone can beat anyone outside the top 2. Livingston with their artificial pitch displayed the most distinct home/away form difference (8 wins at home, 2 away). Otherwise home away is relatively close 49 v 30 wins outside the old firm. It’s hard to attack fixtures with much confidence.

Defenders

Motherwell kept an impressive 11 clean sheets and have goal scoring & penalty taking OOP (Lord?) Liam Donnelly (£3.1m) to get excited about but be wary that he managed a yellow (and one red) in more than half of matches played. A good budget option is seemingly under-priced Livingston defender Jon Guthrie (£2.2m) who managed 6 goals last year. His team managing a respectable 9 clean sheets and almost Old Firm matching 8 conceded at home. Also consider Livi goalkeeper Robby McCrorie (£2.2m) – a bright young on-loan Rangers shot stopper.

Midfielders

Assist king (https://cdn.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/KdB wannabe) Liam Polwarth (£4.4m) managed league 2nd best 11 assists but perhaps a slightly better option is penalty-taking Hibs playmaker Scott Allan (£3.7m) who is hard to ignore at 8 assists and 5 goals last season. Veteran class acts in the form of Aberdeen winger Niall McGinn (£4.8m) and Kilmarnock’s Chris Burke (£4.8m) are still very dependable, if slightly overpriced, with 6 goals and 5 assists each last season. Motherwell attacking midfielder David Turnbull (£4.8m) has returned from the injury hell that scuppered his dream Celtic transfer and kept him out last season. He has a lot to prove and incredible potential – having bagged 15 goals and 4 assists in 30 starts as a teenager the previous season. A cheaper punt might be new Livi signing Alan Forrest (£3.0m), younger brother of Celtic’s James.

Forwards

Almost every team provides a decent option or two upfront, but they are not particularly cheap. Rangers & Barnsley transfer target Lyndon Dykes (£5.8m) of Livingston is highly rated and managed 9 goals and 4 assists last year. Hibs hitman Christian Doidge (£5.8m) is popular with 12 goals last year, including a hattrick. Sam Cosgrove (£7.0m) is dependable and looks the part for Aberdeen scoring his 11 goals at a rate of 0.5 per game (better than any non-OF player). Lower league goal machine Lawrence Shankland £6.0m hit 24 goals in as many games last year for returning heavyweights Dundee United. Barcelona-downing Tony Watt (£4.8m) looks ready to kick start his career at Motherwell, while son-of-hair-god Callum Hendry (£5.0m) boasts impressive 7 goals in 666 mins last year at the age of 21. The cheapest dependable option is perhaps Marios Ogkmpoe £4.2m for strugglers Hamilton with a physical presence and none too shabby 6 goals in 16 starts as he settled in last time out. We have barely scratched the surface on viable forwards so they are worth monitoring at all clubs – but with the pricing a headache, it is tricky finding any particular value for money.

Summary

Some premium and dependable Celtic attack along with some high impact Gers defenders should be a solid base. But there are various explosive differential options in both Celtic & Gers midfield to deploy, or are they shiney distractions? There are also some cheap and mid-price options with a reasonable upside to be excited about in the Motherwell and Hibs midfield particularly. Budget restrictions will likely lead to a 12-man squad, with some throwaway options – but they could be played tactically to cheat the system and get the best of three midfield options from the bench each week.

Cheers for writing! Certainly a good game to fill the gap, well worth a try.

You mention 6 OF players looks pretty essential, but how financially viable is it? Haven't made any drafts, but based on what I've seen from other people it looks a struggle to fit them all in unless you miss out on the bigger names from the two teams or totally torpedo the rest of your squad.

Am liking the idea of starting 2 non-playing midfielders (as that's where I see the least value) & having the best 2/3 mid-price subs coming on. Which of the budget midfielders are likely to get no way near their team this season?

    Strange question to be asking.

And it’s dangerous territory because anyone could end up breaking in these mid/lower table teams!

Thank you very much! The rules are interesting. Am I missing something or does captaining an attacking defender make more sense than Edouard/Morelos? That way the defenders can get double points for any goals and assists, while you can cover any goals from your striker through vice captaining them. Or am I missing something?

Also vice captaining Morelos would be even handier as it won't double the red card points haha

Seems a bit unfair that many now have an advantage by having cheapy Barlow (2.3m) in their team whilst others can no longer get him in. Effectively they now have an extra .1 to spend and if they field him with the auto-sub rule of highest scoring player in, then it could lead to massive points swings. Scandalous.

I have never really followed Scottish football but am always up for a challenge. As a fantasy football fanatic I also find the game to be a good gateway to learning about the football in other leagues and so am excited to get the season started.

It already feels like we all have a big decision to make regarding how we go about getting a OF sextuple into our teams. The attackers certainly haven't been priced cheaply and so I think I'm going to mostly invest in defence and trying to get the most nailed players, then filling in the blanks from there.

Currently I've gone for Tavarnier, Barisic and Goldson to triple up on the Rangers Def's with strong potential at both ends of the pitch. I've Gone for Ajer, Elyounussi and Édouard from Celtic. Celtic are not only the strongest team but also look to have one of the best fixture runs, I really wanted to triple up on their attack but it just doesn't seem viable.

I'm also wondering how to best exploit the benefits of the VC in this game. As mentioned by Flaming Flamingo above, I wonder whether capping an OF Def such as Tavarnier and VCing Édouard could be a shrewd move. Feel like VC on a striker will be a good strategy as most seem to only get goals and not assists. I'd also love to exploit the bench rules but it seems like most teams are secretive with their squads and pre season so I am struggling to find midfielders that will likely be no show squad players that can serve as my fodder

I'm definitely looking at having Tavernier (C), Edouard (VC) more often than not this season. Seems wasteful to stick the captaincy on a goalscorer who doesn't have particularly high potential for assists.

Could be a master stroke given Tav potential for assists and penalties

I’ve heard Clyne is on the radar though and might challenge Tav a bit!

Safe to say Josh Reid & Jay Henderson, of Ross County & St. Mirren respectively, won't be getting any minutes any time soon? Or are there safer options to use when looking to exploit sub rules?

I've ended up with this, quite happy:

    McGregor;
    Tavernier, (Reid), Donnelly, Guthrie;
    Elyounoussi, McGregor, Allan, (Hendo);
    Édouard (C), Shankland (VC).

    (Gourlay; Barisic, Clark, Forrest).

Barisic benched so that, if by some miracle Rangers have an off day, the defensive triple-up won't automatically cost me 3 spots in my eleven. If he gets the CS or an attacking return, he'll come off the bench anyway (unless my other subs provide even greater returns, in which case I wouldn't be complaining).

Will be watching the SPFL for the first time over the weekend so hopefully an exciting start & the eye-test can be especially beneficial.

    1. Flaming Flamingo
      • 4 Years

A few minor things, have you considered going Elyounoussi and Edouard as C and VC? That's what I'm on right now and I think it makes sense to go all in on Celtic this week. Also, I'd play Barisic anyway given he offers attacking threat as well as CS potential.

      1. Eytexi
        • 1 Year
        3 days, 20 hours ago

Definitely considered it, perhaps I'm overthinking the fact that assist points are not doubled on (VC), therefore want a proven goalscorer on it. And, of course, the best attacking asset in the league on (C) in Édouard ensures any assist points or penalty wins from him are doubled. I do see the appeal though.

Barisic will come on in that instance. If he returns, I'm guarenteed his points off the bench. All players in my eleven, except the two auto-subs, provide attacking threat. I'm unlikely to get any benefit from this decision, but it just prevents the damage that can be done should Rangers have a horror show.

Everything's a bit unknown, particularly with regards to captaincy, so it may take a few weeks to find the most optimal combinations. I see your logic and as long as Edouard is either C or VC I doubt you'll go far wrong.

I also get your point regarding the bench, albeit I'll be benching the players with the least points potential. Again though, it'll probably be a case of trial and error.

          Best of luck!

I intend to (C) Tavernier regularly, but the fixture puts me off this week. But yes, Édouard perma-VC (at a minimum) seems standard.

It's a very low-risk move with potential for a tiny payoff, odds are it makes no difference. Good luck mate!

This bench thing will be quite hard to benefit from, as who has the money to have more than one playing sub anyway? even with Two they are going to be the dregs, at least until some genuine sleepers arrive

5 subs allowed too so it is risky unless you find a player who is long term injured

Can't see my two 18-year-old reserve squad players getting any minutes, but if they even make the bench then I can play it safe and bench them. I'd argue I have 13 good players tbh, no outrageous punts or 'dregs', even the likes of Clark & Forrest have penalties & set-pieces respectively. Each week independently, I doubt it's highly profitable, but if it gets me 30 points over the season then why not?

Good thread! Reading this has me rethinking Frimpong as I do agree he’s a bit of a rotation risk. However, just not sure who Id replace him with Celtic wise - don’t have the cash to upgrade to Jullien either!

Slim picking here unfortunately. As FF says below, Clark is an option and will be paired with Shankland but he is more of a busy second striker than a goalman.

Templeton at Hamilton is the biggest name in this price range, would expect him to start but he also is injury prone and often plays wide right midfield so is somewhat reverse OOP.

Breakthrough options to monitor are Bruce Anderson at Aberdeen and Jamie Gullan at Hibs.

I went with Anderson in the end. At least he started and with Cosgrove out for a couple of months he should receive Game time. He is just one of my bench players, and will only come on whenever he is the highest scoring bench player.

As a Scot I am pleased to be picking up this game now that we have an FPL clone. Would appreciate some thoughts on the below:

    Mccrorie (Morrison)
    Tav Ajer Donnelly
Elyounoussi (vc) Turnbull Allan Hendo Ross
    Edouard (c) McKay
    (Guthrie Barisic Nisbet)

Going for the 2 fodder in midfield strategy and Nisbet is my punt. Played for my club Raith Rovers in the lower leagues and is a goal machine.

I see a lot of love for McCrorie which I find very intriguing. Livingston have one of the worst fixture runs to start and he's ineligible in gw4. Not only that, I've noticed that gks only get pts for CS and Pen Saves and not for routine saves like in fpl. Has made me rethink that it's probably best to just go with one of the OF gks to start.

      Defence and midfield are good.

Can't say I know much about McKay, or most players for that matter, only the research I done last couple of days. But Ross County fixtures look decent so could be a good pick.

Thanks. Good point on the Livi keeper. I suppose I have been thinking along FPL lines that over a whole season keeper scores are similar. But no save points might affect that..

McKay is just quite well priced relative to his solid history I think

Yeah, I've got him in too now. I'm actually struggling to get 6 players from OF. All the value at Celtic lies in the attack imo but they are priced so steep it's hard to fit 3 of them in!

        I went with McGregor.

Seemed silly not to get the best as there are no save points to make it worthwhile going cheap. Most playing it as if it is FPL but there are subtle differences that can be used to gain a leg up

Looks like I've dropped a clanger with this but only signed up late on:-

      McCrorie
      Tavernier Ajer Smith
Elyounoussi (c) Allan Aribo Hedges Forrest
      Edouard (v) Long

      Williams Goldson Smith McKenna

Goldson in for Hedges assuming he doesn't come off the bench.

        Subs work differently in this.

It is the highest scoring sub that comes on, not the first sub. Makes starting a non playing person a good strategy, as gives Three chances of bring a goal/clean sheet off your bench

      No sorry.

I can't see the points live in this game either, it's that just how it works?

I can, although my manage GW2 tab is showing GW1 fixtures. Seems like their having a few issues already.

I got a pop up message saying chips are not working and will still be available in GW2.

When I registered I said I followed United and was automatically entered in the league, but my partner wants to join and we can't find out how to do it. Once you've signed up for the game I can't see where you can retrospectively add the team you support.

Still looking for the United league code in case anybody reads this later! 😉

Henderson (2.3m) makes the St.Mirren bench. Here's praying he doesn't come on or the attempted exploitation of sub rules could come back to bite a lot of us.

Lol I did warn about this yesterday, with Five subs you have to be very careful which non player you use as the fall guy.

Worked out very well though, 13 points coming off the bench 🙂 henderson will become mcmaster when i have a transfer to burn. Henderson often makes the bench, on second inspection, but is yet to make his league debut.

I had some Aberdeen non starter, think he about Fifteen years old, hopefully never gets anywhere near the bench

So just noticed, you can play more than 1 chip in a gw in this thing?

You can definitely use the BB & TC simultaneously but not sure if the WC can be applied the same way. WC/BB in one week is definitely on the cards though if possible.

If City are going to be the usual outfield rotation nightmare does this make Ederson an easier set and forget choice this time, especially with Laporte up to speed and surely another big CB signing? Pope I guess will also be 5.5.

Is anyone else just getting a blank white screen when clicking on Points? I can see my points so far at the top, but not who got what...

Édouard monster haul takes me to 72 with, my namesake, Donnelly to play. There must be some TCers on for a century?

I don’t think TC points will count. FFS apologised yesterday that there had been technical problems and chips would be reinstated to anyone who played them.

They later said they'd fixed that issue and that they would infact count

Thanks for writing this. Decided to try out Fantasy Fitba on the spur of the moment, and made the mistake of starting with the 'official' game. What a mess! Completely nutty rules, useless interface, incomprehensible instructions. So after GW1 my private league has decided to jump ship to the non-official app, which is SO MUCH BETTER. And of course it doesn't matter that we've all missed GW1.

It's the official fantasy game. Haven't checked it myself, but according to others on here fantasyfootballscotland.com (only available via the app) is the better/preferred version.

What it is is a game with the wackiest rulebook of any fantasy football game I've come across. For example:

"For each fixture round, you have the option of choosing a supersub from the players picked as substitutes. The points of your supersub will then be tripled, but only if this player actually enters the field of play during the real match! He has to start his real match on the bench. If he does not play, he will not score any points. And if he is a starter in his real match, his points will be divided by 2 as with all the other substitutes."

it's bad enough taking an interest in a midweek game between Burnley and West Brom.

But spending each weekend hoping that a random player from Hamilton Academical is benched and then comes on to score is just next level anxiety.

It's hard to be angry at Josh Reid (2m) starting for Ross County & denying me 6 points off the bench when he's on for a CS at half-time & has been fantastic at both ends in that first half. Jammy haul incoming?
