Joshua Bull crowned FPL champion for 2019/20

Joshua Bull has been crowned the 2019/20 Fantasy Premier League champion, with former world number one Aleksandar Antonov stripped of his title.

Almost a year to the day since Gameweek 1 got underway and a fortnight after the season had ended, there was one final plot twist to a chaotic campaign on Tuesday afternoon.

FPL issued a brief statement to say that, after end-of-season checks, “the team formerly occupying the no. 1 position has been removed from FPL due to a breach of our terms”.

The article in which the announcement was made didn’t elaborate on what those breaches were but the erstwhile winner was notified of the decision via email, with his team removed from FPL.

Quite honestly, we don’t know the exact reasons either, so we won’t be adding to the speculation elsewhere.

Joshua moved up to first place as a result of these latest developments, with Chris McGowan – aka site user Queens of the South Age – promoted to runner-up.

Chris was also elevated to winner of our Fantasy Football Scout mini-league as a consequence.

Joshua, who had never previously finished inside the top one million, played his Wildcard in Gameweek 38+, having used his Free Hit chip a week earlier.

He had first entered the top 1,000 in Gameweek 17 and had reached the top ten shortly before lockdown, rising to seventh in Gameweek 29.

Hitting top spot in Gameweek 32+, he had dropped down to second heading into the final Gameweek and looked to have finished there before today’s statement was issued.

Nick Pope, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kevin De Bruyne never left his squad all season, while Mohamed Salah was only sold for one week.

He's the first player in FPL history to have the rank 0 😛

    That's quite an achievement, nevertheless

Welcome to comment on Wolves defence previous page. Put these in order of preference and justify your choice at length - preferably in several discrete comments

      Doherty 6.5
      Boly 5.5
      Vinaigre 4.5

        Hi bro !
Depending upon fixtures and availability of Jonny i think vinaigre would be easiest pick.

Boly at 5.5 is just like Gomez ... Boring 😉 his availability would increase the CS amount though.

Allow me to add Saiss ... Better defender than dendoncker so pretty nailed & better goal threat. If at 5m he's a good option depending upon fixtures.

Doherty is where my heart is though. Agreed he's going to be expensive. But 4 things:
        A. Goal threat + assist potential. From open play
        B. Boly means more CS
        C. Coady makes those Hollywood diagonal passes to find him from what I've seen
        D. He looks good threat on set pieces. Always play on far side of incoming balls from moutinho l. I like that as he's pretty involved

What about Coady at 5.0? No real attacking threat but will be the cheapest route into the defence other than Vinagre who will lose his spot when Jonny returns.

Will probably start with Vinagre if Jonny is out and switch to Coady when I use my first WC.

I've sort of wondered about Coady - seem to remember he was great on Raga's game but 5.0 just for cs seems a heavy price

What a sad world we live in that people are actually questioning the FPL’s decision to strip the title of a racist.

So much more education and understanding is needed in the fight against racism.

    A racist shouldn’t be celebrated.

    Quite frankly his ‘explanation’ video
    was disgusting.

Do strikers need to be priced slightly lower? Midfielders seem to be smashing them if you compare premium vs premium

Well let's see... Ings & Raul both got nearly 200 for 6 & 7.5 respectively. Vardy over 200 for 9. The current narrative of forwards being rubbish value lacks a certain degree of factuality but maybe at the top end they might shave a bit off, Kun 11, Kane 10.5.

Yeah specifically top end, though of course in key periods of the season they can be as explosive as anyone

Jesus should drag Kun down to 11 anyway but Kane is a tricky one to value properly, hopefully 10.5 but wouldn't be shocked if they kept him at 11.

                  Ah

Curiously in 2018/19 when premiums attackers were I think more expensive I got over 230 from this

Kane weeks 1-22 or so when he got injured
Aguero in as natural replacement with DGW in sight
Vardy in from 28 or so for BGW and hot form

Obviously I got lucky with that 2 transfer move but premium forwards can thrive. That season when Stelrignwa shot for instance by week 22 there was just one point between Sterling Auba Kane. The other two either got injured or rotated and so lost value

I'm not sure it's so much the class of premium forwards that is the problem bu the ones we have now.

Yes, the issue is the top end as was said above. The premium forwards have no chance at matching the premium midfielders for points.

I guess the exception would be a fully fit and non-rotating Aguero, but we know that's not going to happen.

Yeah that's the thing we know it won't happen, if anything he's losing some of his powers as he ages and will be even more injury prone/less reliable. I think it was Andy that mentioned underpricing Firmino relative to the points he gets, because otherwise no one will pick him over TAA VVD Salah Robbo Mane etc, granted he's not a premium but makes the player pool bigger

Just stop giving Salah, Mane and Sterling extra points for goals and clean sheet points would be another solution!

But I don't want to be involved in a lengthy 'who should be a forward?' discussion again...

I do agree about Firmino. His role in the team doesn't justify that price, especially how it relates to FPL points...

See just above in 2018/19 - Kane and Auba did for over half a season match Sterling (not Mo) in a really good season for him. Think it's maybe more complex.

When was the last time a forward was top scorer in FPL? Was it Suarez?

Ever since I started playing it's only been mids.
                        Mahrez

Yeah there's a definite bias to midfield - no arguing there. I'm not sure the balance needs to be titled that much though to restore equality of value.

Also think there's something in this point that the current crop of top range forward premiums is just defective. Kun is injury prone and rotated, Kane is injury prone and plays for Spurs and Auba plays for Arsenal. It's the specifics as much as the class.

Were Kane and Auba to play at Liverpool ahead of Firmino say I'd love them

Interesting though to consider the value of Auba - still a fight over pens of course - at Liverpool. I'm curious to see a full season of Martial playing ahead of Bruno. Haven't checked the stats but I suspect he'd need to be priced up quite high if he matched that form for a whole season - even with forward points not mid points

Pure speculation, but I think Martial could score in the 230 point range if he kept his post-lockdown form. But for a forward to score 250+ points would need a superhuman effort almost. Kane scoring 29 goals and 'only' 220-something points is evidence of that.

Martial is playing his best football and thriving with amazing service around him under a manager that has an excellent track record of developing goalscorers. Personally predicting a world class season for him next year, and likely to be one of the first names on my team sheet.

I've been blown away by Martial's last 6 months - he was already decent coming into Christmas, and steadily just got better & better & better... and better...

He's been smashing the absolute granny out it since Bruno came in too

Seriously talented kid & scores everything from worldies to tap ins, from headers to chips, left foot, right foot, searing pace, ridiculously strong...

                                    Really hoping he avoids 10.0+

But even if he does get priced too highly there's always Greenwood as a 6.5-7.0 midfielder too though 🙂

Probably but it depends where you draw the premium line.

Vardy smashed the premium mids from season start (Mane Mo Sterling) and was only bettered by KdB

But it is extremely odd of FPL to call it ''breach of T&Cs'' instead of outright calling it racist behaviour.

They don't condone racism and that's heavily portrayed with banners and such so why not do the same here?

Would be an even more bigger step towards racism.

This just shows how we can watch the same thing and come away with completely different views. To me he downplayed it, and made himself seem like a victim. If he was so sure what he said wasn't that offensive he would be going crazy and telling us exactly what happened and the context to it

His video was a disgrace you’re right. 5 minutes of ‘it was a private conversation I didn’t think anyone would see it’. Absolute embarrassment.

yeah precisely. That's what I thought too. Came right in with excuses about his comments being taken 'out of context', but also wouldn't say what they are. And was emphasising the private conversation aspect and that he wouldn't have said anything like that to the footballer in the stadium. A lot of victim playing for sure.

Oh well he did try to down play it no mistake. But I see through that, and im just like ok it was racism. It’s irrelevant what he said really, that’s the single word people we’re looking for.
No matter how he words it, it is racism and he was racist.
I just mean he didn’t have to release a video admitting it, most people would just drop off the radar, hope it blows over and that only speculation as to the reason persists.
This makes me think he asked FPL not to publically release the reason for the deletion because he would make an apology video admitting what he said and that he was wrong.
FPL will confirm it tomorrow though, it is a bit strange they gave him that chance. But I guess they thought it was maybe the better approach for him to admit his wrong doing and apologise for it.
Didn’t really listen to the video tbh as I said all I needed was the reason. He did apologise right?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the only apology I could detect was of the 'I'm sorry the comments were taken out of context' kind.

True. I was neutral on the situation until I watched it, but his video makes it look suspicious. He should've done one of two things:

                      1. If it wasn't racist and he's innocent, reveal his comment and clarify why it wasn't racist.

                      2. If it was racist, admit that it was and apologize for it.

He did neither. It was more like his life lesson was that he could get caught from private comments too.

I don't think he's ashamed of what he said, didn't sound apologetic either and seemed care free (probably still doesn't understand the gravity of his actions)

It could be because I'm so used to seeing racist comments everywhere, but I found it refreshing how many people here have been willing to call racism out - compared to, say, a few years ago.

This is a good point, and a reason why I'd hesitate to pick another SHU keeper if Henderson left. On the other hand, I'd be very happy to pick whichever keeper plays for Burnley.

Burnley I cant see changing. Its so engrained and difficult to beat. Its also uncompromising whereas Sheffield actually try to win rather than not lose.

See, I wouldn't. I'll have Pope if he stays at Burnley, but with another keeper, I'll stay clear of the whole defence. Remember Hart deputising? Not good. Pope is an integral part of a highly organised system. The Burnley defence suffers without Pope, and Pope - mark my words - will be half the keeper he is behind another defence with another manager - CHELSEA!

Kind of like Zilla says - opponents know their style now so they won't be as sensational. With Hendo they'll be alright, but with another keeper I'd worry the tight dynamic that suffered very little rotation at the back will be undermined.
Coupled with that, their assets will get a hefty price rise. For that reason I'm not looking to start with any Blades in defence despite Egan and Basham doing so well for me last time.

Then I'd say it is going to be extremely hard to replicate this season, I think Henderson is that important to them.

Yeah it's going to be interesting to see what they are going to aim for next season, maybe they will be motivated by pushing for Europa League spot that they just missed out on this season but also we have seen many teams that simply can't handle that pressure to perform consistently.

I can only see their defece getting worse, massively if Henderson goes.
Im actually a bit concerned for them, if their goals dry up they could be serious relegation contenders.Their 2 forwards were their highest scorers with only 6 goals each.

They need a decent striker desperately

Has anyone made a Var-related joke about the decision to award the title being overturned?

I hear more bans are incoming and this will delay the game 20/21 being launched.

This topic is really sorting the wheat from the chaff. It's always good to be able to identify racists and apologists for racism.

That's a very shallow and simplistic way of looking at it, if I may say so. It is quite possible to condemn racism without supporting this verdict.

It's not enough to not be racist. We need to be antiracist.

It's one thing to not make racist comments/'jokes'/judgements.

But you need to speak up when someone else commits these mistakes, no matter how naïvely.

But the context is, if it seems like your first concern is the "rules" and fpl going after people unilaterally for private comments then to me it says you (not you specifically) don't really care about racism, and are simply using the lack of specific rules as an excuse

I dare say in 2020 we shouldn't even need a specific don't be racist rule, and them deleting his team doesn't make me go "oh god what's next?" "What could they ban me for, they have too much power"

Now if someone was to randomly post "hey guys just looked and the rules are a bit iffy, fpl can ban you for whatever they want even if there's no specific rule against it, I would say yes that's strange and I don't agree with it. But if that person only highlights this specific issue in relation to racism accusations then for me it's iffy ground- that said lots of people will simply be learning about the lack of T's and C's because of this specific issue.

So yes you're right it is nuanced, but we have common sense and it's clear when there's just a melon trying to downplay racism

I agree with you, but I'm not even sure it's nuanced. If you don't want to be banned or disqualified from doing things you like, don't call black people n*****s.
I find it hard to sympathise with anyone who struggles with that.

Has anyone worked out how many points Martial would have got post Bruno as a forward. I can see he'd lose 18 points (I think) from goals and cs but how many would he have got from extra baps from goals?

No doubt someone can offer more insight, but I don't think he'd have that many more bonus poitns - mainly because he already got max bonus for his hat-trick, as well as for goal and assist vs. Southampton. So my guess is 3-4 more bonus points at most.

From what i have seen he will be 100% nailed.

If you trust me i was moaning about Martial being winger & rashford being striker in preseason one year ago.

OGS did exactly what was needed and swapped them to use their abilities at best. Rashford has excelled with more space to run & Tony being better finisher dome well.

Also there was an article which I posted day ago can find if needed suggestion ogs complementing Tony for being better physically this season to play as a #9. Since United have invested a complete season in nurturing him as #9 & only Ighalo as his second choice striker he's as nailed anything. I can see greenwood being#9 but not as soon as next season. He's best finisher we have so he will end up there in a couple of seasons

I’m regards to the breach of the terms and conditions. FPL is part of the PL and hosted on the PL website. If FPL terms didn’t specifically mention anything about racism, the PL ones will.

Good signing for us(Spurs). Brings some balance and strength to our midfield in a position that has given us problems since Wanyamas legs gave way.

Not going to weigh in on the racism chat. Instead, wondering if anyone here has thought about team selection using the following mindset?

                                        ---

We start off with a budget of 100m - but some of that budget is locked in and can't actually be accessed, a bit like how 2/3 of the Earth's fresh water is locked inside glaciers and can't actually resolve droughts in Africa, for example. Specifically, 64m is the amount locked in by the requirement of having 15 players - 4.0m x 7 + 4.5m x 8. So we actually have a budget of 36m, and we can adjust player prices accordingly:

                                        Salah - 8m - 233pts,
                                        KDB - 5m - 251pts,
                                        Vardy - 4.5m - 210pts,
                                        Ings - 1.5m - 198pts,
                                        Pope - 0.5m - 170pts,
                                        Lundstram - FREE - 144pts

                                        - for example.

If we work under the assumption that we should maximise points across the starting XI and have the cheapest bench possible, then we're essentially looking to spend 36m across 11 players. Presumably we can then bring in VORP to gradually use up this budget.

We could make, for example, a list of the highest scoring players by position and price:

                                        0.0m --- Martin 20; Lundstram 144; Cantwell 111; Greenwood 103
                                        0.5m --- Pope 170; Baldock 142; Traore 130; Ayew 132
etc. (dont have time to do the rest)

Looking at this list, as well as average scores by position and price for players who meet certain criteria (e.g. played 60+ in most games), could lead to some interesting insight. I've not actually done the research, as you can see - would like to hear the community's thoughts anyway.

Oh right, yeh. I thought you mean the FPL site. I don't bother with all that stuff, just this website and the game.

Alexsander attempting to justify his use of the N word.

What also strikes me is the correlation between those with a problem with players taking the knee and those who seem to think Alexsander shouldn't have been punished.

Losing your #1 ranked FPL team isn't even a punishment. Get real.

Ridiculous. Tries to say it was just football banter and that many of us have done the same with our mates. Eh....no. There's banter and then there's this.

Weird how he says the term is innocuous but would never use it normally. Why? Because it's racist? Haha. Ah well. I think it's better not to condemn too much. He's been punished by being publicly shamed as well as having his title stripped. What do we want? Blood? Time always heals, so why not just accept the apology and move on?
