Pre-Season

FPL reveal the first player prices of 2020/21

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m), Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), Sadio Mane (£12.0m), Mohamed Salah (£12.0m), Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m), Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) and Nick Pope (£5.5m) are among the first players to be priced up by Fantasy Premier League ahead of the game’s imminent relaunch.

De Bruyne has been handed a starting price of £11.5m, which is up £2.0m on what it was a year ago.

That’s exactly the same as what Sterling will set Fantasy managers back in the coming campaign.

Salah, who finished second behind De Bruyne in the overall points standings, has dropped in price for the second season in a row.

The Egyptian will now be available for £12.0m, having been £12.5m at the beginning of 2019/20 and £13.0m a year before that.

Salah and Mane can’t be split, with the Senegalese winger listed at the same price as his teammate.

Just as importantly, Salah, Mane and Sterling remain FPL midfielders – which pretty much guarantees that there won’t be much deviation from previous seasons’ policy surrounding player classification.

De Bruyne was FPL’s highest-scoring asset of 2019/20, registering 13 goals, 23 assists and 35 bonus en route to his total of 251 points.

He ended the season at £10.6m, having reached a high of £10.8m earlier in the campaign.

Salah racked up 29 attacking returns, finding the back of the net on 19 occasions and losing his grip on the Golden Boot, which he had at least a share of in the previous two seasons.

Both players have been on penalty-taking duties for their respective clubs, of course.

James Milner is first in line for spot-kicks on Merseyside but had limited first-team opportunities last season, with Salah deputising in his stead.

Mane, who was admittedly only one attacking return away from matching Salah’s tally last season, has never outscored the Egypt international for FPL points in their time together at Anfield.

De Bruyne was the beneficiary of penalty misses from several other Manchester City players, meanwhile, assuming control in the second half of the campaign and converting four spot-kicks in league and cup; Sterling’s failure from 12 yards in Gameweek 37+ surely only aiding the Belgian’s long-term prospects.

Sterling had a real rollercoaster season in 2019/20 and drops half a million in price this time around.

No FPL midfielder scored as many goals as the Manchester City winger (20) in 2019/20 and yet for large chunks of 2019/20, he was largely overlooked by the FPL community.

A great spell of form after the restart rekindled interest in a player that had looked off the boil midway through the campaign, with five of his nine double-digit hauls coming from Gameweek 30+ onwards.

A total of 206 points was his lowest in three seasons – a lack of assists accounting for that – but he nevertheless passed the 200-mark for the third straight year.

Handed an even bigger price rise than De Bruyne but still cheaper than the three premium midfielders we have already discussed, Fernandes will set Fantasy managers back £10.5m ahead of 2020/21.

The Portuguese playmaker had a better points-per-match average (8.4) than any FPL asset last season, having recorded eight goals and as many assists in his 14 league starts.

Initially costing £8.0m upon his move to England, Fernandes had risen to a high of £9.1m by Gameweek 37+ after a superb start to his Manchester United career.

We’ll be able to better assess Fernandes’ value when we see how FPL handle both the prices and positions of Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, but it’s safe to assume that those three attackers will be handed significant price hikes too.

United, like their cross-city rivals, may not even be in the picture in Gameweek 1, should their start to 2020/21 be delayed by their ongoing involvement in the European competition.

As for Pope, he gets an expected price hike after he topped the goalkeeper standings in 2019/20.

While Fernandes, Sterling, Salah and De Bruyne will still be attractive options to many despite their premium tags, Pope’s rise to £5.5m will likely deter a lot of Fantasy managers.

Alisson and Ederson were the only goalkeepers who cost more than that last season.

The Burnley shotstopper was originally available for £4.5m at the start of 2019/20, rising to a high of £5.2m by the season’s end.

A total of 15 clean sheets and 120 saves helped him to a final score of 170 points.

It should be said that, had he finished the season at £5.5m, he would still have been the best-value goalkeeper in FPL based on the points-per-million metric.

Elsewhere, Vardy has risen to £10.0m after his Golden Boot-winning campaign.

That’s as expensive as the Leicester City striker has ever started a new campaign in FPL, although he did rise to £10.1m in the season just gone.

Vardy averaged fewer points per match (6.0) than the five premium midfielders above in 2019/20 but is cheaper than all of them this time around.

Tomas Soucek has been given an appealing £5.0m price tag, meanwhile.

The West Ham United midfielder scored on three occasions in the final seven Gameweeks and posed a real threat in the air following his move to east London in January.

Leeds United midfielder Pablo Hernandez will cost £6.0m, half a million less than Brighton and Hove Albion summer signing Adam Lallana (£6.5m).

I think its the right price but such an awkward price. If C. Taylor comes in at 4.5 Id rather that route into Burnley's cs potential. The extra million for Pope's possible save points is a hefty price

Yeah 5.5 is a good price. I think some here are forgetting about how the keepers were priced last season. Only 4.5s were the keepers from the few worst teams in the league, so realistically 5.0 is the min price for keepers.

Pope, McCarthy etc were exceptions due to rotation risks. Of course if a similar bargain arises from transfers after pricing, it's a different story but no news of such possible moves at the moment.

Where would you put Ramsdale if he went to SU? Any chance of Bournemouth price? SU aren’t that strong and have limited track record after all

Ramsdale at SU would be 4.5, surely. I wouldn't have him or any SU defender if Hendo isn't there, given their SP's would be 5.0m

Ramsdale will be 5.0 if he goes to SHU. This is practically guaranteed. Only chance he'd have of 4.5 was if Bournemouth had stayed in the Premier League and then he switched clubs after the game launch.

There is half a precedent here for 4.5

All Palace defence started at 5.0 or above apart from Ward who was nailed. Only difference being he hadn’t played previous season. Reaching I know

Sakho Tomkins and Guaita all got priced at 5.0 for clean sheets. Ward who had exactly same chance - equally nailed - was 4.5. Only possible rationale was he didn’t play in that defence previous season - not wholly dissimilar to a new keeper at SU

Ah I see - but that's a bit different as you said - you can't put a defender that had hardly played at 5.0. If Ramsdale comes to SHU he comes off a good season (FPL-wise) at Bournemouth and he'd be the starting keeper of one of the best defences in the league.

74 points in the first part of this season when Bournemouth were still half way a decent side. Pretty much exactly the same as Pope in the same period - a complete cycle of matches.

In any case I'm not sure I'd have someone like Ramsdale at SHU. Henderson was a big reason they conceded so little, and their chances would probably suffer with a different goalkeeper.

This is different to a team like Burnley where the whole team is geared towards not conceding, and the keeper is just there to pick up the save points from speculative shots from distance.

Think Hendo gets over rated on here. He's good but not that good I suspect. SU defence falling off without him can as easily point to the other goalie being rubbish not just his being Shilton reincarnate 🙂

I'm not saying he is Shilton reincarnate - just that, statistically, he was one of the top keepers for preventing shots from going in. In other words, Pope may have made more saves, but Henderson made more difficult saves.

Which is why there's a much higher probability for a new keeper to succeed at Burnley than at Sheffield United.

His PPG has always been very high and he's great for bonus points (only 3 less than Henderson and Lloris only played 1800 minutes). I hope he stays under the radar and would love a 5.0 price. The FPL community has definitely started to recognize him. If he can stay healthy, he has all the makings for a set and forget 160+ point scorer imo (which at 5.5 is still solid imo)

So KDB is a bargain yet again. It may not be that hard to go for a big midfield with these prices.

I know I complain about 'midfielders' such as Salah and Sterling getting an extra point per goal and clean sheet points, but giving save points to midfielders makes the game even more unfair now 😛

              That's a good point - why don't they?!

If an outfield player goes in goal they don't get save points, which just seems unfair.

"For every 3 shot saves by a goalkeeper" in the rules

I could have sworn there was someone who made 3 saves but didn't get any points, or something like that. Thought I remembered a fair bit of discussion about it

As far as KDB's price is concerned, are you not surprised he's not more? I know he started last season at 9.5 but they had absolutely no problem putting Salah up to 13.0 (from 9.0) in his second season, so I don't understand why KDB is so underpriced this year.

Yes, which is why I'm not saying KDB should be 13.0. But 12.5 - or 12.0 at the very minimum - for sure.

The thing is, now that KDB is 11.5 I don't see Bruno being close to that. I can't see how they'd justify having a player at 11 after less than half a season when the top scorer of the game who got 251 points is at 11.5.

yeah, there is no way he will be 11, and I dont believe he will be 10.5 either. His ceiling is 10 but I wouldnt be surprised at 9.5 tbh. Lets not forget he came into the game at 8...

That would make for a very boring game. I was hoping for KDB at 12.5 and Bruno at 11 in order to make people actually have to make some choices.

How do they justify pricing new players to the game with no PL experience at 10-11+? Think this logic is flawed, it's not about how long he's been in the league or what his price was last season, it's about his points potential/demand this season. Both are very high.

That said, having seen KDB/Sterling/Salah's prices, I think 10.5 would be right. Before today I would have said 11, for sure.

                3 years, 8 months ago

But I think that's partly the logic they use too, so it doesn't matter whether it's flawed or not. Now that KDB is 11.5, it would be surprising if Bruno was close to that. The new adjusted prediction from me is now 10-10.5, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if he's more expensive.

OK - I think they don't, so it does matter in that case.

Pope's price was completely expected. There was no way fpl were going to price the highest-scoring goalkeeper at 5.0. I'm surprised Debryune is only 11.5 and Salah has dropped. Had thought KDB would be 12 and Salah 12.5

He's suggesting a price drop of 0.5. You're suggesting a drop of 4.5. Aguero will most likely drop to 11

          1. Goonsquad245
            • 8 Years
            3 years, 8 months ago

Aguero finished on the same points as Jordan Ayew last season.

I'm not suggesting Aguero should be 7.5m of course. Fabianski might end up being 4.5m, but him being injured last season shouldn't enter into it - points potential this season should.

            1. Greek Freak
              • 8 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

In this case, I think the injury - and the way Jesus stepped up during that injury - does impact points potential for this season. At least it would make them think about Aguero's playing time now that Jesus has strung quite a few good games together.

              1. Goonsquad245
                • 8 Years
                3 years, 8 months ago

Then he should get a price drop on his points potential, not because he didn't play much. I agree.

In Fabianski's case, his injury doesn't really impact his potential. He'll be West Ham's nailed 1st choice keeper with a decent history of doing well. Whether FPL price that position at 4.5m or 5m isn't dependant on his injury-laden last season.

                1. Greek Freak
                  • 8 Years
                  3 years, 8 months ago

So you don't think FPL consider injuries from the season before? Evidence (such as KDB being 9.5 last season) suggests they do I think.

        2. Greek Freak
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

There's definitely precedent for underpricing previously injured players. KDB is the most obvious example from last season.

As for Aguero, I think he'll be quite cheap yes 😉

(not 7.5 of course, but he'll turn some people's heads at 10.5 or so)

There was talk this week of Ancelotti’s patience growing thin with Pickford.
The trouble is outfield areas are more of a priority.

Listening to Everton podcasts on reviews of the season really do slam the central midfield areas for loss of the ball.

I find it disappointing when FPL price players out of the game.

Nick Pope starting at 5.5m is 0.5m too much.

They need to make players a reasonable price for entry and allow for the transfers in/out dictate whether people become priced out out of buying. As it stands it’s the other way about.

If he scored 170 points again that would be ~31 points per million. Where else can you find value like that?

It wasn't an error. When the prices came out, Burnley had Heaton, Hart and Pope.

I think he was a victim of the game launching far too early. Heaton moved on before GW1. Also Joe Hart was *never* going to be #1, he’s absolutely horrific.

They did it with Pickford. 160 points at £5m and then they bumped him to £5.5m - on par with many top 6 keepers.

Pickford at 5.5m was unpickable last season.

Pope isn't really priced out there, the Burnley keeper gets at least 150 every year under Dyche - it's players like Pepe and Firmino that are annoying

You've not seen the first 3 prices then?

2nd highest clean sheets for the season
Most points from a keeper last season

Can't price someone scoring like that at 5m. He's still an option, just not going to be ridiculously popular (as he shouldn't be)

It’s worse when they under price good/popular players so everyone has an identical team.

They're already doing that given KDB's price.

Pope at 5m would be silly.

No, this is good otherwise everyone will have Pope next season.

2 years ago he was rubbish when I had him, hence why he was rightly 4.5 last season.
This season he will underperform going by the trend

Wasn't that when Burnley were in Europe?
It always seems to have a negative effect.

Think of it this way - they might price Tarko £5m.

          Problem solved.

I’ll still probably get Pope unless he has terrible fixtures at the beginning and pretty sure many other will as well. 5.5 is a reasonable price for the highest scoring keeper last season. Midtable team keepers are normally priced at 5.0 and 0.5 premium for Pope definitely makes sense.

kinda crazy that FPL lists the likes of sterling and salah as MIDs. How is Auba's real position for arsenal any different to theirs for mcity/liv??? maybe they should add a category of attacking MIDs in, so FPL managers are forced to choose some defensive MIDs too...

agree to an extent, and he could easily be a mid - but he is much more likely than those two to play CF next season

Auba’s minutes as a central ‘forward’ is the difference.

Central vs wing seems the key, will result in the Rash/Martial swap.

So Vardy at 11.0 if Auba is a mid?

            Finished highest of the FWD's.

KDB went up so why would they not do the same with Vardy?

Vardy and Lei interest me. Many of us backed Vardy to have a great season and he delivered. He'll be overpriced imo. I feel that this may be his last really good year, going on 34 years of age. Wonder if top 4 is realistic for Lei again this season and I'm concerned with the motivation of the team after falling short this season

I don't think FPL will launch after the 21st. 7-10 days of tweets with player prices, a bit much I guess. Tomorrow or sunday I expect FPL to launch.

they always milk it though and all the twitter comments say "Launch the game already ffs" haha. I can't see a launch before they're able to put fixtures in.
