Salah v Mane: how the Liverpool assets compare after FPL price changes

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will both set Fantasy Premier League managers back £12.0m in 2020/21.

The Liverpool midfielders are the joint-most-expensive assets in the game so far and it’s the first time the pair have been available at exactly the same price since they moved to Merseyside.

The price gap between the two players was a whopping £3.5m at the start of 2018/19, narrowing to one million last year.

So is the decision a complete no-brainer for Fantasy managers given that the Liverpool duo now cost the same?

Salah has outscored Mane for FPL points in each of the three seasons they have played together, while the Egyptian also has penalty-taking duties in his locker.

Owning both of these premium midfield options isn’t impossible but, given the price rises elsewhere for the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m), it may be a case of one or the other.

In this latest Members’ article, we will weigh up the pros and cons of each asset.

They're screwed. That will take many years to correct.

SAF may have won the title in his last season, but he left behind a very old squad. Nearly all of the first team were in their 30s. We all know how that went...

Having most of your squad drop off at the same time is devastating. Building a new squad from scratch will take many windows...

      Ironic also given La Masia

They're obviously aiming to get Garcia back from City and I imagine there are a couple of other graduates placed somewhere else but has the tap run dry? No idea.

As Giggs says it'll take a good time to fix this - simply using the United comparison. There are also parallels with United and the tradition of bringing in local produce. I imagine there'll be calls - and Barca is a very political club - to get back to their roots and go local as much s possible

This debate at this time last season happened the same way. Mane was 11.5, Salah 12.5, and everyone was like, "Oh, Salah all day for just 1m more." Fast forward to GW5 and almost everyone had sold Salah for Mane. Mane went on to become the template even rising up to 12.4m until that DGW injury.

It's good that FPL finally priced them the same as they should be. One takes way more shots but is less clinical. The other takes fewer shots but is way more clinical.

It evened out in the end as they ended on the same points per minute.

    1. Goonsquad245

I can’t agree, I feel like it makes it a really easy decision to pick Salah given the choice between the two.

Points per minute last season was the same, yes, but I feel as though Mane is on fire to be doing what he’s doing whilst Salah has way more left in the tank. His ceiling feels way higher than Mane’s.

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 7 Years

That is a matter of opinion, so if you really believe Salah has more left in the tank, then go for it. The last two seasons haven't really shown that though, imo. Rather that Salah's purple patch was his debut season and since Ramos injured him in the CL final, that purple patch was gone and his finishing ability has reduced. Even the stats prove that and I'm not even a stats guy.

Yep - absolutely a matter of opinion, but the difference in opportunities does it for me, and is what makes Salah’s ceiling so much higher IMO.

I'm still going for the two, I think. Same price for the pair as last year, service aplently and Liverpool are set up to score. If I can get Bruno in there, providing Auba's still a mid, that'll suit me over second guessing Pep every week.

I'm considering it too as owning them both together was my favorite setup of last season. But there are so many premium attackers cheaper than 12m that could match both Salah and Mane in the short term.

But no City attack would hurt a lot of weeks when they smash teams up. I'm actually keen on Mahrez and Foden's price as they will be the cheap alternatives this season now that KDB and Sterling are both 11.5.

        1. Drexl Spivey
          • 5 Years

Chelsea I think seem to be the value side this year. I only really committed to KDB from City last season, which worked out okay and it didn't really hurt me when the rest went apesh!t. If Pulisic turns up again in form and Werner comes out firing I'd feel happy enough I could duck City's threat. Pulisic, for example, I think moves up to captaincy level this year, for a mere £8.5m.

          1. Goonsquad245
            • 8 Years

Unless they all somehow contrive to have awful fixtures at the same time, when would Pulisic ever be a better captain option than Salah/Mane/KDB/Sterling/Bruno?

            1. Drexl Spivey
              • 5 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

That's five players from three teams, two of whom are unlikely to start GW1. So yes, if Liverpool started with a duff away fixture, I would say Pulisic is an option for captaincy. If nobody else plugs for him, all the better.

If I could afford Bruno somehow, with Salah, Mané and Pulisic. I'd order them Salah (h), Bruno, Pulisic.

Pretty much agreed but actually it took most of the way to gameweek 9 for Mane to get close to similar ownership and even then I suspect the sales were from Sterling as much as Mo. Preconceived notions die hard.

As a footballer or as an FPL asset?

In the same way as 14 games weren’t enough to properly penalise Bruno, hopefully Greenwood’s 8 consecutive starts at the tail end of the season won’t be enough to penalise him with anything too far over 7.0

Mata & Martial have both started as 7.5 midfielders in recent seasons, after playing more minutes (and more returns) than Greenwood - Dan James started at 6.5 after being signed for €15m...

If Greenwood is a mid (and I think all 12 of his starts this season were out wide right) - then I can’t see him getting more than a 3.0 hike from his 4.5 last year hopefully... especially after only making 12 starts & his other 18 appearances being from the bench

7.0 would sound predictable, 7.5 maybe a bit harsh, 6.5 would be doing a KDB/Bruno/Pulisic and underpricing him, but could still happen due to the way they seem to be approaching pricing in some cases

Those same prices, but as a forward, may also be a possibility...

      1. Goonsquad245
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Greenwood is nailed as a mid given Auba’s reclassification IMO.

Given his current role in that united team/squad, 7.0 would be a huge mistake by FPL. 7.5 would definitely be on the low side - why would he be £1m cheaper than Pulisic who had the same issues with minutes?

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Remember when Pulisic first joined - he was much more established & developed than Greenwood is even now

He also came in with a €60m price tag on his head off the back of already having 4 seasons playing for Dortmund in the bundesliga & champions league & 30 caps for the USA in internationals (Check out the sheer amount of USA international & Bundesliga records he had already broken before he arrived in england) & he still only got a 7.5 last season

Even on just pure games & minutes Pulisic started 20 games this season - whereas Greenwood started 10, Pulisic with all his injury problems still played ~30% more minutes - and on pure returns Pulisic has 17 to Greenwood’s 11

Those 8 starts for Greenwood post restart were hugely impressive on the eyetest he already looks a potential once in a generation talent - but hopefully the truncated appearances won’t be enough to get him too far outside the 7.0 range for this season

Similar to Bruno then the proper price rise will come in time for next season I’d say

          1. Goonsquad245
            • 8 Years

We’ll see - I’ll certainly be buying at £7.5 though!

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

Fingers crossed - really hope they don’t whip him with an 8.0+...

Then again they do funny things with English players too! I could also see them pricing amount similar to Pulisic example

Greenwood could be a sleeper hit this season if he San sneak in around 7.0-7.5

Something similar to Alli’s 20 goals as a 6.5 midfielder, or Kane & Bales breakthrough’s as 4.5’s etc

              1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
                • 14 Years
                3 years, 8 months ago

                * Pricing Mount similar to Pulisic, not amount

                • 8 Years
                3 years, 8 months ago

But the reason I think they will price him higher is that he’s shown his hand already at the end of last season with a reasonable run of games as a first choice forward in a top 3 side (in which he was very productive).

                Playing for an on-form
United will likely not help his case either - you know how that fan base swings ownership at the best of times...

Him and the LIV defenders are the prices I’m most looking forward to seeing!

                1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
                  • 14 Years
                  3 years, 8 months ago

I think/hope they’ll only consider those 8 post-restart games (the fact that he’s still basically a child at 18) enough to give him a chunky 2.5-3.0 rise, but not enough to add 4.0+

Particularly when you think of the (first season)Pulisic 7.5 , Martial 7.5, Mata 7.0, James 6.5 type-cases or the (second season) Pulisic 8.5

                  1. Goonsquad245
                    • 8 Years
                    3 years, 8 months ago

Fair, I don’t really understand why they priced Martial at 7.5m last season tbh. A bit weird given his potential if he sorted injuries etc which he obviously did!

Anyway, my prediction is still 50/50 between 8.0 and 8.5m mid. Hopefully won’t have long to wait!

Has anyone worked out what his score would have been as a mid?

      205 + 32 for goals & Cleansheets = 237 less a few baps - maybe 225-220-ish?

Plus he improved a fair bit towards end of season - if he kept that rate up instead of the early season doldrums probably higher again

        Agree.

This is the thing with FPL vs real life. In real life you can be a wide winger, an inside winger, a playmaking forward, a striker, a wide midfielder, a central midfielder, a central attacking midfielder etc. There are literally hundreds of roles. But FPL does not distinguish between roles - it has three positions - DF, MF, FW and the bps work to favour certain actions within those roles.

By classic FPL role and bps actions, Sterling, Salah, Auba, Martial are clearly forwards. Mane, KDB, Fernandes, Mahrez are mids.

The hard one is Rashford. Because he is a midfielder sometimes, but a forward other times.

Mane ends up at CF a LOT during Liverpool games. No reason to re-classify Salah and not him

You can’t just move them all to FWD because that saturates that position. I agree that you need to move some and not others, which creates a problem as there’s no consistent way of doing so IMO.

Shots in the box. Salah, Sterling, Auba all at the top out of all players (not just midfielders). Mane, Mahrez not up there.

Salah has a lot of shots from cutting in from the right and shooting though.

Still shooting though. And fundamentally, that is what a FPL Forward (not a real life forward) does. Shoots a lot.

Anyone who plays in a front 3 should be a forward imo. Leave midfield to actual midfielders.

Nope. Doesn't take as many shots. So it would only take a slight dip in Mane's / Liverpool's performance to make him crap.

Auba with penalties and loads of shots will get goals.

        4 more than Salah.
Why not at 12 in a team that will be better this year

In my eyes Aubameyang is a striker. Always has been. One season out wide and now he’s classified as a Midfielder on FPL. It’s fair but he isnt a midfielder. I cant really think of an alternative where FPL can fix these problems with players like Rashford, Auba, Mane, Salah ect

      1. diesel001
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Classify by shots in the box. Run the data and it is pretty obvious that under FPL definition of forwards (i.e. someone who shoots a lot) that Salah, Sterling, Martial, Auba are forwards.

        1. Goonsquad245
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

The FPL definition of forward isn’t someone that shoots a lot though - it’s pretty clearly defined as their starting position in a team’s formation.

You could argue that the problem is with their definition, but they’ve classified people correctly as per their current definitions.

The way bps is driven pretty much suggests that a forward is someone who shoots a lot and scores goals.

The FPL definition of a forward is a central striker, not someone who shoots a lot.

            • 7 Years

And that is why FPL is killing the forward. Because it has not kept up with the evolution of the game and the different roles that real life forwards play.

I agree. Same with Rashford. They are not midfielders, never have been or will be.

Agree with the view of moving Salah et al to forwards rather than the other way around.

Chasing points between the OOP midfielders (Auba, Sterling, Salah, Mané) is going to KILL a lot of folks this year

Can see it coming a mile away

Sterling > Auba after Auba hattricks
Then Auba blanks & Mane hauls
      Auba > Mané
Then Mane blanks & Salah hauls
      Mane > Salah
Then Salah blanks & Sterling hattricks
      Salah > Sterling
Then Sterling blanks & Auba hauls etc etc
