The Promoted

Bryan pricey at £5.0m but Rodak may rack up the save points in Fulham defence

Having provided the lowdown on Fulham manager Scott Parker, our series on the newly-promoted Premier League sides continues with this look at the Cottagers’ defence.

We will discuss the west London side’s midfielders and forwards in our final piece.

In this article, we will assess Fulham’s overall clean sheet chances and then present a player-by-player rundown of their backline.

With the likes of Charlie Taylor, Ruben Vinagre and Luke Ayling all available for £4.5m, the Cottagers’ defenders will have a tough task in convincing us of their worth.

Their shot-stopping goalkeeper may be a save point-magnet in 2020/21, however.

We’ve again roped in the help of Brandon Kelley, Fantasy Football Scout frequenter, co-host of the Always Cheating podcast and a New York-based Fulham supporter, for this feature.

WHAT IS FULHAM’S CLEAN SHEET POTENTIAL?

Fulham only had the fourth-best defensive record in the Championship last season, having conceded 48 goals in 46 matches.

The Cottagers kept 17 clean sheets in 2019/20, five fewer than champions Leeds United (22) but three more than runners-up West Bromwich Albion (14).

It’s always a promising sign for FPL if a newly promoted side looks defensively solid in home games but, rather concerningly, Parker’s troops conceded more goals on their own soil (26) than eight other Championship clubs last season.

Overall, they were ranked sixth for fewest expected goals conceded and fewest shots conceded per match.

Their two goalkeepers, more on which in the next section, were kept busier than Leeds and West Brom’s custodians, making 118 saves between them.

The Cottagers’ league record was as follows:

PWDLFAGDPTSCS

Away2381052422+2347

CS = Clean sheets

As was the case with West Brom, Fulham tightened up in the second half of 2019/20.

Just six of their shut-outs arrived in the first 23 ‘Gameweeks’ of the Championship campaign, with the other 11 arriving thereafter.

It was perhaps no coincidence, with centre-back Michael Hector (£4.5m) arriving in the January transfer window and having a transformative effect on the Fulham backline.

The Cottagers kept ten clean sheets in the 20 games that Hector started, conceding on just 17 occasions.

Brandon Kelley told us:

Fulham’s 2018–19 squad were whipping boys and they had one of the worst defences that the Premier League has seen in recent memory. It wasn’t helped by a constant goalkeeper rotation, an injury to new signing Alfie Mawson, and needing to bed in two full-back replacements for both Ryan Fredericks and Matt Targett – both of whom were immense in Fulham’s previous push to promotion.

Some of Fulham’s defensive issues have since been fixed, notably the emergence of Marek Rodak and Michael Hector’s signing from Sheffield Wednesday. Hector has an imperious stature and eye for a tackle that reminds me (sorry, but I’m going there) of Virgil van Dijk and his solid play has almost certainly brought some of the confidence back that Tim Ream had lost during his last Premier League campaign.

Our Fulham correspondent also hailed the influence of loanee Harrison Reed (£4.5m), who remains a Southampton player at the time of writing but who did a commendable job as a defensive midfielder in the English second tier last season:

It’s also worth noting that Harrison Reed, who was on loan from Southampton last season, shielded Fulham’s defence incredibly well. If Parker is able to work a permanent deal and keep Reed in his midfield, then I’d genuinely be eyeing a Fulham goalkeeper or defender at £4.5m.

PLAYER BY PLAYER

*Figures given below are for the regulation Championship season only and exclude the three play-off matches

MAREK RODAK

Goalkeeper

Starts: 33 | Clean sheets: 13

Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) had started the season between the posts for Fulham but was deposed after just 12 games, with Marek Rodak (£4.5m) remaining as Parker’s first-choice goalkeeper for the rest of the season.

Rodak, who had spent the previous two years on loan at Rotherham United, impressed upon his promotion to the starting XI, going on to register 13 clean sheets in 33 starts (he was sent off early on in the 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough in October, so we won’t count that).

While clean sheets might be a significant concern for Fulham based on what we have discussed above, Rodak looks a good bet for save points in FPL next season.

Just four first-team regulars in the Championship made more saves per match than the 23-year-old Slovak (2.9), a figure that will no doubt rise with more potent attacks to come up against in 2020/21.

His save percentage of 76.9% was also the best in the English second tier, while he also significantly outperformed his expected goals conceded tally.

Our Fulham expert, Brandon Kelley, talked up the young shot-stopper’s prospects:

Perhaps the best bet for straightforward FPL returns will be goalkeeper Marek Rodak, who has proven to be a decent shot-stopper. With Nick Pope confirmed at £5.5m, many FPL managers will be looking for a new cheap goalkeeper and I wonder if Rodak’s first season in the Premier League might be reminiscent of the early days of Lukasz Fabianski (whose middle name just happens to be… Marek!).

JOE BRYAN

Left-back

Starts: 39 | Substitute Appearances: 4 | Goals: 1 | Assists: 7

Joe Bryan‘s (£5.0m) brace in the play-off final may have sealed his fate in Fantasy Premier League, with the powers-that-be subsequently opting to make him the most expensive Fulham defender in the game and hand him a £5.0m starting price.

The left-back had scored only one goal in the regular season, finding the back of the net against Wigan Athletic with an effort from just inside the Latics’ box.

While he did register more shots (38) than any other Fulham defender, his minutes-per-chance average (89.9) wasn’t even the best of the Cottagers’ backline and he had just one ‘big chance’ all season.

He had also taken only one direct free-kick before his heroics at Wembley.

It was Bryan’s assist potential that really stood out, with the 26-year-old full-back setting up seven goals in all – six of which were for Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m).

Firing over more crosses from open play than any other Fulham player, Bryan was also second in line behind Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m) at corner-kick situations.

A minutes-per-chance-created average of 69.7 was the best of the west London side’s defensive assets.

A word of caution, though.

Bryan’s previous full campaign in the Championship, with Bristol City in 2017/18, saw him score on five occasions and set up a further three goals.

Again priced up by FPL as a £5.0m defender in 2018/19 off the back of those exploits, he registered just one attacking return – an assist – in 2,344 minutes of Premier League football.

Always Cheating’s Brandon Kelley also urged caution, saying:

Joe Bryan took all of the headlines for his play-off final heroics, and he does look much improved since one year ago, but don’t be fooled: Bryan won’t be scoring many free kicks in the Premier League, especially if Neeskens Kebano is on the pitch.

DENIS ODOI

Right-back

Starts: 30 | Substitute Appearances: 4 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 1

Denis Odoi made more appearances at right-back than any other Fulham player last season but few Fantasy managers will be going near the 32-year-old Belgian if he stays in west London.

Odoi was mostly a regular pick when he was available (seven of his no-shows were enforced through injury or suspension) but there was the occasional benching, most notably in the play-off double-header against Cardiff City.

The step up in class next season might be in Odoi’s favour if he signs a new deal (his contract expires this summer), with the Belgian a more defensive-minded option than Cyrus Christie (£4.5m) at right-back and a nice counterbalance to the offensive Joe Bryan on the other flank.

Odoi offers little for FPL managers to get excited about, however, with his minutes-per-chance-created average at a poor 185.8 and his last goal coming back in 2017/18.

CYRUS CHRISTIE

Right-back

Starts: 13 | Substitute Appearances: 11 | Goals: 1 | Assists: 1

Cyrus Christie (£4.5m) is a more attacking option than Odoi at right-back.

Christie’s rates of goal attempts (one every 79.5 minutes), shots in the box (one every 130.1 minutes) and efforts on target (one every 286.2 minutes) were the best of the Fulham backline but, given that he has failed to score more than one goal in each of his last seven seasons, this is no Matt Doherty we’re talking about and some context has to be provided.

Bryan bettered him for key passes, meanwhile.

Just 13 Championship starts (plus two in the play-offs) highlights the lack of security and even if Odoi leaves, Parker will surely look to reinforce his options at right-back.

TIM REAM

Centre-back

Starts: 44 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0

In our previous analysis of Parker, we mentioned his fondness for a conservative passing game.

That begins at the back, with the three leading Championship players for passes per match in 2019/20 all being Fulham centre-halves.

Top of that list is Tim Ream (£4.5m), whose total of 3,148 passes was the highest in the English second tier last season.

His pass completion rate of 89.3% was also the best of Fulham’s defenders in 2019/20, which will aid Ream’s cause in picking up bonus points on the occasions that the Cottagers keep clean sheets.

That’s about all that Ream offers, however.

The USA international, who has scored on just three occasions in his professional career, presents next to no goal threat and had just two shots in the whole of 2019/20.

The 32-year-old centre-half only created a chance every 395.1 minutes, meanwhile.

A sizeable section of the Fulham support would like to see an upgrade on Ream as the left-sided centre-back next year but after 44 league starts under Parker last season and limited time to dip into the transfer market, the American could still be a starter heading into 2020/21.

MICHAEL HECTOR

Centre-back

Starts: 20 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 2

As we discussed earlier in the article, Michael Hector‘s (£4.5m) capture from Chelsea had an instant impact on Fulham’s defence.

The Cottagers kept clean sheets in the first three of Hector’s starts and looked much more solid from his debut onwards, with the Jamaica international dubbed ‘Virgil van Mike’ by the Fulham faithful for his dominant displays.

Brandon Kelley said of the centre-back:

Parker has talked a great deal about stabilising the club, which will surely entail a greater focus on defensive organisation. Michael Hector transformed the Fulham backline when he was signed last season and he’ll be heavily involved in tackles, blocks and clearances – all BPS-worthy actions.

It’s worth taking a closer look at those baseline bonus point-earning figures:

PlayerMinutes per clearance, block and interception (CBI)Minutes per recovery
Hector14.414.8
Mawson15.417.0
Odoi18.415.3
Christie19.124.3
Ream20.816.2
Bryan23.917.5

Add Hector’s impressive defensive contributions to those passing figures we mentioned when discussing Ream earlier – Hector was ranked third among all Championship players for passes per game – and he should be well-reflected on the Bonus Points System.

Whether Fulham are good enough to keep more than a handful of clean sheets and get him in the mix for bonus points on a regular basis is debatable, however.

For someone so good in the air, Hector doesn’t score too many goals and he managed only six attempts in his 20 Fulham appearances.

Keep an eye out for his ‘Hollywood’ passes, though: two of his raking long balls led to assists against Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday.

ALFIE MAWSON

Centre-back

Starts: 25 | Substitute Appearances: 2 |Goals: 0 | Assists: 0

FPL managers may remember Alfie Mawson’s (£4.5m) goalscoring exploits from his time at Swansea City, with the budget defender scoring four goals from centre-back in 2016/17.

He indeed had more shots (12) than Ream and Fulham-era Hector put together last season, although his minutes-per-chance average of 183 was still unremarkable.

Mawson was the fall guy when Hector arrived, losing his place and then failing to regain it after a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The Hector-Mawson partnership is one that Parker hasn’t tried outside of the FA Cup and it is a possibility next season if no other bodies arrive, with Mawson more at home in Ream’s role on the left-hand side of defence.

THE REST

Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) started out 2019/20 as Fulham’s first-choice goalkeeper but lost his place after 12 matches, returning only briefly when Rodak was dismissed and subsequently suspended in the autumn.

It remains to be seen if returning loanee Fabri (£4.0m) features in Parker’s plans in the Premier League and a place among the substitutes looks to be about the best that Bettinelli can hope for come Gameweek 1.

Maxime Le Marchand (£4.5m) started only three games all season, deputising for Bryan at left-back on two occasions.

The Frenchman was also thrown on as a substitute in nine fixtures, often as an additional centre-half as Fulham tried to close down a match.

Steven Sessegnon (£4.5m) saw a bit more game-time than Le Marchand but eight of his nine Championship starts came in the first two months of the campaign, with the youngster initially having been drafted in to cover for the injured Odoi at right-back.

He was mostly a substitute for the remainder of the season and, barring an injury crisis, he’ll likely be well down the pecking order when football resumes in September.

Sheffield United: A Tale of Two Defences?

    Clean Sheets:
    13 in total - joint 3rd highest.
    8 at home - joint 2nd highest.
    5 away - joint 4th highest.

    Goals Conceded:
    39 in total - 4th lowest.
    15 at home - 2nd lowest.
    24 away - joint 5th lowest.

Before the new game launched, I recorded where a select few players scored 8 or more points, as I consider that a decent score for your captain. The 12 players I looked at were the midfielders and forwards who scored around 200 points or more and a few others who I was interested in. I recorded their 8+ scores for each fixture home and away.

The 12 players scored the most against Norwich at home, totalling 84 points. 7 of the 12 got 8 or more points.

The next best fixture for captaincies in general was Sheffield United at home. Again, 7 players got a score of 8 or more, with a total of 78.

The other fixtures which were the best was Bournemouth at home, 71 points in total from 6 players and Newcastle at home, 69 points from 6 players.

Four other fixtures had points totals in the 60’s by 5 players: Arsenal at home, Aston Villa away, Watford at home and West Ham away.

The players and their 8+ scores against Sheffield United at home:
    KDB (14), Salah (10), Mane (8), Sterling (-), Martial (21), Vardy (-), Aubameyang (-), Son (8), Ings (8), Jiménez (-), Rashford (9), Kane (-).

    And for Norwich at home:
    KDB (19), Salah (12), Mane (-), Sterling (8), Martial (8), Vardy (-), Aubameyang (16), Son (-), Ings (9), Jiménez (-), Rashford (12), Kane (-).

There was only two fixtures that no player scored 8+ in: Liverpool away and Man United at home.

Obviously none of this takes into account players missing games.

VVD at 6.5m is good for 170 pts over the season.

Salah at 12m is good for 230 pts over the season and plus he is in decline.

That is 5.5m for 60 points or less.

That is 11 pts per million for the season.

Too expensive. I.e. you expect Pope at 5m to outscore any 4.5m keeper for more than 11 pts over the season for sure. Doherty (6m) to outscore Saiss (5m) for at least 11pts over the season too.

Not worth it, unless you captain Salah 20 plus times.

With KDB and Penaldo Fernandes out there, I think I am set for captain for life (whole season).

To be revisited if there is a double GW of course.

guess you could involve Kun with something like this:

        4.5 (4.0)
        TAA Robbo VVD Doherty (4.0)
        KDB Bruno Greenwood Soucek (4.5)
        Aguero Wood (4.5)

I haven't had Salah in my team since the game launched, because of the unreal human that is TAA as a captain

He "blanks" with 6 points for clean sheets, then spams crosses, key passes, and direct + indirect set pieces... At 7.5M

I'll cap him when I'm not capping Fernandes or KDB, with the cash left from these underpriced permacap options spent elsewhere in the team, like on Robbo, Doc, Lloris, Ziyech, Greenwood and Mahrez/Pulisic and a 6.5m forward (or Foden and an 8.5m forward), all of whom I don't think I'll cap more than five times each in the season, but add up to an overall score

I'm against, because I think Salah is a 250-260 point player, not 230, and I'll captain him until he stops getting such a ridiculous amount of opportunities to score points in games.

My opinion though - lots will disagree and it's very much a personal choice thing.

Yes, I think people are just so wedded to this idea that your captain must have lots of shots in the box, or else he is an overrated penalty merchant.

It's as if set-piece goals and assists somehow don't count the same as other goals and assists.

They do, but people overrate the impact of corners and DFKs IMO.

I support the argument. It relies a little on a set-and-forget model. Those who can pick players on form will always want a little more cash to jump from player to player but I can’t so need play the season averages.

I'm going without Salah. I reckon KDB and Fernandes will score just as many points if not more and they are cheaper.

Trying to fit in three of them weakens the team in other areas.

I would only want Salah to captain in home games. He was poor away last season.

Also you have Robertson at 5m cheaper who will probably score 20 to 30 points less. 5m cheaper for 20 less points.

      Rather have Robertson.

We all knod Salah is a fantastic asset. We can only find his downsides if we can't afford him. I expect him to outscore Bruno.

Salah had a lot of shots without going beyond 22 goals, two seasons in a row, in a team that has gone from counterattacking every game to balance out the bad defence to controlling matches and maintaining energy levels with lower scorelines... And we still get this attachment to his 32-goal season

Salah will probably be the topscoring player, or in the top 5 along with Sterling, KDB, Bruno and Mane (save for injuries), but he's no longer heads and shoulders above everybody else. That was one season

      2. Ze_Austin

Exactly. Salah and Sterling feel like must-haves because they were head-and-shoulders above any other captaincy option in 17/18 and 18/19, but now it's hard to come to terms with the fact that there are assist merchants who can match them for points in KDB and Bruno, even after a season where both these guys blew them away for points per match... And are now "cheap". Sterling is seen as less of a must-have because KDB made the gulf so glaringly obvious, but it's hard for people to see how TAA matches Salah as a captain (when not capping Bruno/KDB, which should be rare) due to the clean sheets they didn't get when Adrian played, making it 210 vs 233 instead of something in the region of (TAA) 230 vs 250 (Salah). Same gap, but reduced bias against being a defender as TAA's points were matched by Vardy... Then Bruno had half a season so there are many excuses flying around for why his points aren't really FPL points because they didn't come from Salah's routes to points

Bruno was fixture-proof last season. Here's proof of his points without penalties: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2020/08/15/how-will-new-positions-at-man-united-affect-their-fpl-assets-in-2020-21/?hc_page=12&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_22252025

Here's proof of his returns (excluding fantasy assists) and the fixtures they came in: https://www.transfermarkt.us/bruno-fernandes/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/240306/saison/2019/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/985

I won't bother with the KDB vs Sterling argument, as what you said there isn't backed by the stats, but getting those stats (xG and xA) takes time I don't have for an argument

It says 2.29PPG without pens. He has never scored from open play against a team in top half of PL!

Man U won 2.29 EPL points per match that Bruno played. That's not about fantasy points. To aid in your ability to grab a point and read, please scroll down and see his goals and non-fantasy assists on the same page, which is what the sentence with that link in my message above was referring to

And if you don't terribly mind, check the first link and the message attached to it about his FANTASY points without penalties

Okay. Your extrapolation is flawed. You counting games including teams in top half too, where he had 0 goals without pens. You can look at stats in different ways to suit your narrative.

Then don't cap him in those games against top-half where he doesn't get goals without pens (but got three non-fantasy assists in 8 such games), then get the extra points IF Man U get penalties in those highly intense games with tackles flying, where Penandes comes in with 6 goals in 8 games against top half, and then add his goals and assist against lower opposition, keeping in mind that he only scored 4 penalties... And they do get penalties. All of this adding up to 8 goals and 8 FPL assists in 14 games, 8 of which were against top half

All these backed by his shot volume, key passes, positioning, shots on target... And any other stat you're trying to say I'm looking at to suit my narrative

                  A quick look on understat:

                  KDB xG 8.11, xA 20.62 - actuals 14G 20A

                  Sterling xG 19.8, xA 7.21 - actuals 20G 1A (!!!)

Stats don't tell the full story because KDB is likely to somewhat overperform xG (probably not to the extent he did), but Sterling was very unlucky last season.

It's not unlucky, it's called being a non-clinical finisher, which Sterling is. (He's in my team, mind)

Sterling being a non-clinical finisher causes him to underperform xA by 6 assists?

What does his finishing have to do with his xA? Lol. I was referring to his xG Delta.

xA has to be looked at differently. Underperforming his xA isn't a negative because his assists are reliant on the players he passes to finishing their chances. So that's alright.

His finishing has absolutely nothing to do with his xA - and that's my point.

His xG to G delta is actually +0.2 - so he overperformed it last season!

Underperforming his xA by 6 on the other hand is unlucky, hence me saying Sterling was unlucky last season.

                        Agree on the xA part.

+0.2 is acceptable but not good. It's very close to the average, making him an average finisher. That part of it is not due to him being unlucky. Clinical finishers always outperform their xG by much more than that.

Examples of clinical finishers from last season: Vardy, Auba, Ings, Kane, Mane, Martial.

You're, again, underestimating assists. 20 expected assists leave KDB at his 20 assists, while 6 extra expected Sterling assists add 18 points and a random guess of 9 extra bonus, bringing him to 204 + 27 = 231 points. KDB beating his expected goals isn't surprising when you count the fact that xG doesn't favour long-range shooters (KDB, Bruno) because xG is based on the average footballer, and the average footballer doesn't get many of his out-of-box shots on target, unlike these two behemoths and a smattering of some other popular midfielders/CAMs in their prime. KDB beating his expected goals is... Expected when he's playing well, as he won't take those positions and shots in the box you'll see from wingers

So, nope. Sterling absolutely does NOT crush KDB into powder stats-wise

Oh, but he does. Purely stats-wise, he does, and that is irrefutable. 20xG 7xA (plus fantasy assists that he's more likely to get than KDB - winning pens etc) beats 8xG 20xA any day of the week.

I didn't say Sterling crushes KDB into powder as an FPL asset - which is the argument you've tried to turn it into.

Using just xG and xA? 20 expected assists give 60 points. 8 expected goals give 40 points, for a total of 100 points

20 expected goals give 100 points, and 7 expected assists give 21 points, giving a total of 121 points

But by your own analysis there, TAA doesn't match Salah as a captain.... he's a decent option if you don't own Salah for whatever reason, but if you owned both it's not a contest.

It's largely personal preference - that 'gulf' between KDB and Sterling just doesn't exist unless you purely take into account FPL points from last season.

Not saying either way is wrong - again it's personal preference, but the way you are talking is that it's obvious what everyone should be doing which isn't true.

TAA matches Salah as a captain except if you permacap Salah. This is because TAA gives you a reliable (as long as their other defenders are fit) Liverpool captain at 7.5 and lets you spend that 12.0m Liverpool mid slot on a much cheaper KDB/Sterling + Bruno pairing. That's three reliable captains from the top 3 attacks, and then you can add the wildcard factor of a nailed Chelsea attack as a fourth captain for 8.0m to 9.5m, with the promise they offer. This lets you max out on the points you'll get from the other players in your XI who you'll rarely every captain

So, yes. There are many ways to skin a cat, but if people realize the TAA + Bruno + KDB/Sterling (C) value soon enough and let go of Salah's 32-goal season, it will be less of an argument. Salah even showed this last season with the frustration many had when Mane hauled instead. It's no longer a one-man show. Mane had 10 goals in the season where Salah had 32. Liverpool just doesn't play that way anymore. The next season: Mane 22 with Salah 22, then Mane 18 with Salah 19... All while TAA's reliability increase by the day

Agree with all of it, but unless you nailed the captaincy with TAA last season, I have my doubts on whether you'll be able to predict when he'll haul as compared to attackers. I don't think it's as simple as "against teams with poor attacks".

For this, let's compare Salah vs average/bad defences: https://www.transfermarkt.us/mohamed-salah/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/148455/plus/0/saison/2019/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31

Against TAA vs average/bad attacks WITH ALISSON: https://www.transfermarkt.us/trent-alexander-arnold/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314353/plus/0/saison/2019/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31

Remember that Salah gets a point for blanking with a CS, while TAA gets 4 points for blanking with a CS

Counting this is going to take some time for me as the site doesn't count clean sheets, but you might see my point on reliability from this... Especially after factoring in the issue of capping Bruno/KDB in the instances where you might not want to cap TAA

Okay. I think Alisson returned around the time of GW16 because that's the point where they kept a long stretch of clean sheets (it's when Gomez began to start too).

Right away, I can see no attacking returns from him against Bournemouth, Watford, and Sheffield starting from GW16. Would you classify those teams as fixtures where he's captainable? I'm sure I would. He only got clean sheets there. If they were 6 points each, I would consider them captain fails.

On the other hand, Salah scored in all of those games.

I am not saying TAA will outscore Salah in each game where you'd captain a Liverpool winger over KDB/Bruno. I'm saying TAA has as much a chance of a return as Salah in those games where you'd captain a Liverpool winger over KDB/Bruno. Salah WILL SCORE WELL in easy games, but so will KDB and Bruno. TAA will score well in easy games, but will not get as many points as Salah overall or in every GW, yet has more routes to points as he has set pieces, 4 CS points (which you're overlooking here as captaincy failures), and then his crosses. Capping TAA doesn't assure you of ever outscoring Salah, but reduces your chances of a blank... And gives you 4.5m extra for the rest of the team, which will clearly make up for the eventual difference of about 30 points between those two captains. This isn't a 1.5m price difference between reliable captains (few blanks, high chance of a haul) from the same team, but 4.5M. Hedge has a calculation of where each extra 0.5m can take you, but I don't remember the exact figure. This is what I'm referring to

TAA (C) vs Salah (C) in isolation? Salah clearly wins. TAA (C) + 4.5M vs Salah? The difference...

The real difference is in games where you'd captain Salah/Bruno/someone else in games where you'd otherwise captain Sterling/KDB in honesty. I understand your point that you can downgrade Salah which works wonders for the rest of the team, but you can also keep him and downgrade another premium mid to get the same balance.

So your other captaincy option would have to make up the 30 points between Salah and TAA (c), whilst up against your Salah/Bruno/whoever alternative in that GW.

So in games where Liverpool have the standout fixture, will you captain TAA or KDB/Bruno? I'm confused as to when you're planning on captaining TAA exactly.

KDB/Sterling aren't 'much cheaper' than Salah though, are they?

If I think Salah will outscore both KDB and Sterling comfortably (and therefore is better value at .5m more expensive) - why isn't it viable to have him, Bruno, and Werner (for example) for .5m more expensive than Sterling/KDB, Bruno, and Werner?

How many times do you think the City captaincy option will be the absolute stand out over LIV/MUN to really make me worry about having both TAA and Salah instead of just TAA?

I'm not expecting Salah to score 32 goals. I'm expecting him, though (and this is my opinion) to do enough to have the highest points expectation of all players in the game at the end of the season, comfortably.

Again, I'm not saying either way is right. It's just not as clear cut as you make it out to be - it's really not.

In what you've just said, you did not count capping TAA. I'm saying going without Salah works if you cap TAA in the games where you'd have capped Salah, except if the Liverpool backline isn't fully fit or their form is dreadful. My point is that TAA as a captain removes a 12.0m Liverpool mid slot as the gains you'll have from an 8.5m mid there instead and, say, Robbo over a 4.5m defender or a more expensive forward (the upgrades are endless) brings the total points Salah can get in a season into question. Salah needs to beat your two main midfield captains AND TAA (C) by around 50 points to counter the gains you'd make by capping TAA and those two cheaper reliable mids instead + the squad upgrades

If you're permacapping Salah, though, this argument is not for you. Permacapping the game's likely highest scorer might just cover for the damages to the rest of your squad from not capping TAA and two cheaper premium mids with a squad update instead

If TAA has a terrible season, sell him. My points completely disappear if TAA, Bruno and/or KDB/Sterling become bad options. I'm referring to what we already know and expect, which can change in an instant with a VVD injury or total Ole dip in form

I'm not replacing Salah with a 8.5m mid though, I'm replacing him with an 11.5m one to have Sterling/KDB. I can still have TAA/VVD and Salah, and I have the squad balance you're talking about anyway.

I'm saying it's not clear cut. If I think Salah is the best option in the game (and by extension better than TAA), why wouldn't I have him, Bruno, and Werner as my captaincy options? How much do I really lose by choosing him over Sterling/KDB?

(Obviously fixture dependant and if there's a plum City fixture with tough ones for the other boys it's a re-think - but instances of that are pretty few/far between)

You are assuming above that you can’t have Bruno and KDB/Sterling when you own Salah but you can easily own Salah, Bruno and one of KDB/Sterling (and you can still fit in Chelsea attacker too if you wanted to). So it boils down to who you captain when Liverpool has the best fixtures among the 3 teams: TAA or Salah. I wouldn’t be confident with captaining TAA over Salah due to 2 reasons in these situations:

              1) Salah hauls are more predictable vs TAA (more double digit hauls vs bottom half teams)
              2) Higher rotation risk with TAA - This happened in some easy fixtures such as Bournemouth and Burnley this season and Klopp signalled more rotation for TAA and Robbo with his comments after Tsimikas signing. Starting on bench usually more often than not means a 20-30 min cameo for TAA/Robbo.

                1. Salah did not have more double-digit hauls vs bottom half teams than TAA last season WITH ALISSON FIT
                2. Salah was benched four times when fit last season, while TAA was benched three times when fit. Klopp signalled more rotation for Salah with his comments after signing Shaqiri, then did so again after signing Minamino

You can have as many premiums as you want in the game, but my point is that you can have TAA as your Pool captain, just as many had Mane as their Pool captain instead of Salah. The difference is that TAA saves you a whopping 4.5m that can be spent on upgrading many other members of your team, while still being a reliable captain in an armband rotation with City and Man U (I don't think this has ever happened before in FPL). If this isn't obvious from the explanations I've given, I don't know what else is

Salah had 7 double digit hauls vs bottom half, TAA had 2. And yes, Salah did have more double digit hauls vs bottom half when Allison was fit.

All 4 of Salah benchings in PL last season were due to injury/fitness issues last season. And even when attackers start from bench, they are more likely to get returns if they come on.

By the way, I checked the data from last season and the number of double digit hauls vs bottom half when Alisson is fit is the same as above: Salah 7, TAA 2

Further to this, Liverpool only played 2 bottom half teams during Alisson’s injury (Southampton and Newcastle) and TAA had no attacking returns in those games. So even if you think they’d have kept CS in those games with Alisson, number of double digit hauls from TAA vs bottom half still remains the same at 2.

My point here is not that TAA doesn’t haul often but it is that they are far harder to predict, thus reducing appeal as captaincy option.

It's so logical to triple up on Liv defence and leave it for the season. Saves a lot of transfers and guaranteed 600 points between them. BUT for some reason it just doesn't fit and there's a reason why more people don't do it. I just don't know what the reason is... Probably because Salah at home is about as safe a captain option as you can get where you can't say the same for the defenders.

people want the next shiny object not slow and steady. it is difficult to keep your defense for the whole season that is why. normal human behavior. that is why it is our chance to capitalize on it

Last year’s highest scoring combination doesn’t have triple Liverpool defenders and has a Liverpool mid. So it’s not irrational human behaviour or because we just want the “shiny object”, it is rational behaviour based on stats.

Bad idea to plan on having a mf starting with Foden and Greenwood?

Think they are both great value, and should get plenty of game time, especially in greenwoods case if they don't sign a RW.

Nah, Sancho aside - greenwood is nailed and with silva gone I think Foden steps in - Torres is an unknown factor however (for the wide man) but b Silva isn’t favoured imo

Either could be amazing value, I'd be cautious with both starting out though. Will utd and city play first game week? Both may affected by signings (particularly Greenwood I think). Given there prices it should be easy to move to them if they are looking good and solid starters, I'm thinking Grealish as a place holder at first. I'll be keeping a close eye on both, but starting with either I'm not sure.

      I'll make a quick point:

If you'd have started this season with a fully fit Sane at 8.5m, start this season with Mahrez

      That's it. That's the point

      1. Klaren
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Starting the season with Mahrez is pointless as he is clearly out of favour compared to other choices based on recent starts in both PL and CL and he has 1 additional player to compete with this season for gametime.

Sane had rotation risk but he was the first choice 2 seasons ago when he wasn’t injured.

If I don't jump on Salah or Aubameyang then I may go with something near this, I like the spread of funds. Have just changed Armstrong to Saint Maximin. There's a good group of 5.5m mids.

Yeah for me pick a 11-12 mid for captain, Rash as 2nd captain option, theN build the rest of the team and fill in whatever mids can be afforded. 5-5.5 range will definitely do

    McCarthy (Martin)
    TAA Doherty Ayling Saliba (Mitchell)
    Sterling Bruno Mahrez Greenwood (Gordon)

Fodder and 4.5 defence are all notional.

Pretty set on Doherty given half decent fixtures. Mahrez I like but may renounce 🙂 Definitely want at least one premium type up top. Jim is there because I don't want to be irritated.

Regard TAA as a captain option when Liverpool are facing a poor attack. Unworried by EO 🙂

Don't try and be took clever too soon. That is the lesson I learnt. Safer gambling on 4.0m defenders instead of leaving out most of popular big players in game. Odd punt OK, but not too much. Unless heart is set on it.

Don’t really see Doherty as much of a punt. Easily better than Robbo back end of season and there’s an equal risk in any double defence after all. Add in value and I’d be happy enough with this

I kind of want to make as fewer decisions as possible as my timing sucks, so I've gone for a set and forget defence & a couple of rotating mids and 4.5 defenders.

Werner is in because I like him & he's easy to downgrade from. Mitrovic is in there but could easily become whatever bandwagon emerges.

That is a great team, very similar to mine. Only difference is I have Soucek playing, Bruno instead of Salah and Jimenez instead of Mitro

Bit short of big players and, if you want to set and forget, I’d consider Pope too.

      ASM isn’t a great 4th mid

Following on from Geoff's hot topic, what are the new T&Cs regarding cash mini-leagues in FPL?

Have you considered reading the Ts&Cs?

I’m going to have two teams this year. One I take hits every week and do badly like usual and one I don’t change.

I bet loads on here do that.

Let us say you have the money. Is Pope worth it or better to invest elsewhere?

Ryan + Button. Enjoy the 1m.

I don't think so, given that you can get Taylor for 4.5.

Ready to go until the fixtures are announced xD:

    Ryan
    TAA Vinagre Taylor Justin
    Greenwood Fernandes KDB Auba
    Wood Werner

*Bad bench but I will try to go as far as possible.
**Still some dilemmas: I'm monitoring Ayling and Saliba for my 4.5 defs
While I'm also torn between Salah or Auba

Feel free to copy my perfection xD

Is James a bit part player now? Greenwood going to start most games?

Did anyone screenshot the leaked fixtures earlier today? Was it just GW1 or could you see further ahead?

No, but they looked dodgy anyway - both Man Utd & City at home in the same week.

Even the fixtures in FPL? I saw the "leaked" fixtures from yesterday and agree they didn't look right at all, but if the FPL game showed actual fixtures then they're more likely to be right.

Could be test data I suppose.

Ah sorry, didn't realise the fixtures shown in FPL were different.

Feels so wrong to go without Salah.

Then you want Mane, and then you don't know which to captain.

I'm Salah-less at the min but I think Bruno to Salah might be worth 1.5m. Not sure.

As a reminder, most people sold Salah by GW8/9 last season and didn't bring him back in until the DGW24. We should've sold sooner, but he started strong in GW1-3, so we gave him time until we gave up.

If I remember rightly he had some pretty well publicised niggles etc which gave everyone itchy feet - there were rumours he'd miss a game so people jumped to Mane and then had no reason to jump back until after the blank.

Where would you save .5 m on this potential squad?

    McCarthy Nyland
    TAA Saliba Vinagre Taylor Ferguson
    Salah KDB Greenwood Foden Soucek
    Werner Martial Mitrovic

Mitro to a 4.5? Your team is lacking bench fodder

Anyone know when Jonny is expected back, even roughly? Vinagre tempting but unsure when he’ll fulfil his destiny as a guaranteed transfer.

    McCarthy
    TAA Vinagre Taylor Dallas
    Auba KDB Salah Fernandes Soucek
    Antonio
    (Nyland Ferguson Vassilev Wickham)

    Any thoughts?
