How to play FanTeam’s €1m Premier League Fantasy Game – A Beginner’s Guide

Sponsored by FanTeam

Fantasy Football Scout are again joining forces with FanTeam, Europe’s biggest daily Fantasy sports platform, for the 2020/21 season.

An astonishing – and guaranteed – €1m is on offer in their season-long Premier League Fantasy game, with €200,000 going to the winner.

There is no catch here, only a €25 entry fee – a payment you’ll make up just by finishing in the top 5,659.

Given that only 75,000 entries are permitted, the odds are favourable for those who know their stuff.

On top of that, there are also prizes handed out to Fantasy managers who perform well on a weekly and monthly basis.

So how do you play FanTeam’s game?

Our guide below has all you need to know to get started.

WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES TO FPL?

Here’s the great news: anyone with any sort of Fantasy Premier League experience should be able to pick up FanTeam’s game without issue.

The rules, scoring and prices are very similar to FPL, so skills – and indeed squads – are easily transferable.

It’s essentially FPL but with huge cash prizes. Given that paid entry mini-leagues are now strongly discouraged by the Premier League, the FanTeam game offers Fantasy managers a legitimate opportunity to make money from their management expertise.

As in FPL, managers build a squad of 15 players that includes two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.

A maximum of three players from a single Premier League team can be selected, with the budget for the initial squad set at 100.0m.

A starting XI is then selected for each Gameweek from that squad of 15.

One free transfer is allowed each Gameweek, with each additional transfer costing minus four points. Managers can roll a Gameweek transfer forward but can never have more than two free transfers in their locker.

FanTeam managers have two Wildcards to use, one for each half of the season. Unlimited free transfers can be used when the Wildcard is deployed and also ahead of Gameweek 1.

A captain (and vice-captain) has to be nominated every week; that player will score double points if they are handed the armband.

How to play FanTeam's €1m Premier League Fantasy game - a beginner's guide

All sound very familiar? That’s because the two games are largely the same – although there are a handful of differences to watch out for.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • Player prices can rise and fall based on form and in-game transfer movement but, unlike in FPL, a player’s ‘sell price’ is the same as their ‘buy price’.
  • Other than the two aforementioned Wildcards, there aren’t any chips in FanTeam.
  • More than one team is allowed per person, with each entry costing €25.

HOW DO PLAYERS SCORE POINTS?

Seasoned FPL managers should have no problem in adjusting to FanTeam and running a squad with its familiar scoring system, which is shown above.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • There is no Bonus Points System, which is replaced by plus/minus points if a team is winning/losing during the period a player is on the pitch.
  • Goalkeepers get 0.5 points for every save made, unlike the one point awarded in FPL for increments of three stops.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or converted penalty is penalised by minus two points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra point for completing the full match.
Win a share of €1m as FanTeam and Fantasy Football Scout join forces

We’ll be back over the coming weeks with a series of articles on FanTeam’s million-euro cash game, delving deeper into the player prices, fixture list and strategy.

Until then, head over to FanTeam and start tinkering with your team. As is the case in FPL, unlimited transfers are allowed before Gameweek 1 and the player prices don’t change until the season is underway.

Genuine question: I know Ayling was playing more in his natural positon, but why people keep saying Ayling is more nailed than Dallas while Dallas started 10 more games than Ayling?

    1. cjhewitt92
      • 7 Years

People say this because leeds are looking to bring in left back. Ayling missed start of season with injury.

      Ayling was injured.
Bielsa is actively looking to sign a LB.
      Ayling is more nailed

Dallas is competing with Alioski and Douglas for the LB spot where as Alying isn't really competing with anyone at RB.

However, Bielsa's never really shown much faith in Douglas and Alioski tends to be more of an impact sub. Dallas, however, was the man that Bielsa would always find space for. If he wasn't at LB he was somewhere in the team.

Alying may be slightly more nailed but will be used as CB cover if required where as Dallas has the chance to be played further forward, or, more likely, be pushed up onto the wing as a defensive substitution.

Even if we sign another left back, both are nailed for the first few games. Bielsa won't throw a new left back in with so little time before the season kicks off.

Alying more nailed long term, but with both being part of the leadership in the squad I expect them both to provide great value at £4.5 and currently have both in my team.

Interesting. I suspect that's about the 2 Manc clubs getting permission to start late, and Wolves and Chelsea's requests being taken on board. Now they have to jiggle things to make the 4 of them play each other GW1 so only 2 fixtures are postponed.

3 playing subs will be the key factor this season. Games postponed last minute due Covid or players miss games due Covid. French league would start this friday, 4 players with covid and game is postponed.

Looking at Europe I suspect is a good indicator of what will happen here. We’re simply at an earlier stage on the curve. See zero reason to think we’ll do better and quite a few to say we’ll do worse 🙁

In Europe we see a big spike in daily new cases. Matter of time before the UK also have this issue. And experts believe that the virus will be spread more in the colder months.

I hope the season will be finished, but I'm not sure atm.

First go with a non template defence - including 5.5 - to see what can work

5.5 is an odd price point but there are options. MBP has pointed out how AWB crushed it at the end of last season. If United defence stands up then with all those attacking options now the "need" for triple United attack looks less pressing. Gomez is another on my list as best cs opportunity. But the one included below is Tierney. I'd have him as the "just possible" template buster who could solid gold.

Less flexibility than quadruple 4.5 but if you roll with Koucek as 4th mid then this can be done. This set up assumes Palace and Arsenal start with a nice run and PvA is crocked.

    4.5 4.0
    TAA Doherty Tierney Ayling (Mitchell)
    Mo 11.5 Greenwood Koucek (Bassouma)
    Ings Jim (Davis)

2 mill itb to switch up between Ings Jim Greenwood. All Chelsea and Spurs and United within reach. Only second 12.0 or 11.5 out of reach

That looks really weak to me honestly.

Ings and Jimi gives no flexibility. You only have 2 big hitters when you can comfortably afford 3 by being more economical. The 5.5m defense price point is bloated and not great - far prefer rotating 4.5s if you're going to go with TAA + Doc.

Bissouma and Davis? I really don't like 2 full on fodders. 1 at most. And rotating 4.5s give you better coverage.

      1. pingissimus

        3 months, 8 days ago

Ings Jim plus 2 million itb if you read on - 3rd big hitter to be nominated from a forward or Bruno

The quadruple 4.5 is template for a reason of course. This set up is really looking at how that template may break down. I’m not fully convinced it’s best value.

      2. Camzy

I think you're falling into the trap of relying heavily on players that did well last season - dunno if it's really only your 2nd season, but that might be a factor.

If you bought this team last year you'd have done great but the same guys rarely ever perform great again, and the ones that do are premium.

          🙂

Just looking at options so I don’t blind myself to opportunities by tunnel vision

I did have Ings just after hitting perfect Pukki so did nicely enough. My mistake was not repeating my success with perfect Jim set and forget from 2018/19 because I didn’t believe he’d still be value. They’re top of the value charts for a reason.

Other major success was going KdB Mane early on and avoiding Mo. And also having money up top to hit perfect Vardy. Value is where it’s at. 🙂

My mistakes were being too impatient after getting all the right ones in early.

Are you consciously taking the Manc clubs likely sitting out GW1 into account? That makes a line-up seem skewed. With what you've got, an 11.5 Citizen and Greenwood are covered by the Palace lad and Bissouma. After that it's fine. 2FTs for GW3 can change your front line to including the likes of Werner, Martial, Vardy at the expense of whoever's misfiring between your big 3 midfielders or 5.5 defender.

I am trying to compare Dallas and Ayling for example but there is no data since they played in the Championship last season. Does the comparison tool cover only PL players?

Who is the better option KDB or Sterling?? Both had great post lockdown form.

KDB all day, cheaper as well.

I don't think KdB is optional. The question for me is whether or not I should have both.

It’s very close between the two, depends what you’re after.

      KDB is definitely safer.

Sterling had great finish to the season, I haven't looked deeper into it if it was due Aguero's absence, but he scored 9 goals from wealth of chances, and also had 4 assists (only fantasy assist though, but that counts also)

That being said, KDB has unprecedented creativity, he's on penalties and has great bonus points potential. He's also on free kicks and can score from low xG chances due to his shooting abilty. Also, with David Silva gone, and Gundogan playing, KDB plays more like #10 rather than #8/box-to-box.

As much as I prefer the player operating inside the box, I have to go with De Bruyne here.

Cheers. KDB it is, although close. Easy swap to Sterling if injured.

    Current draft, thoughts appreciated.

    McCarthy
    TAA / AWB / Vinegar
    Salah / Soucek / KDB / Fernandes / Greenwood
    Jimenez / Mitrovic

    Nyland / Saliba / Ferguson / Brewster

Quite like that I have 5 penalty takers covered.

Why no love for Delle Alli in drafts?
Could be a bargain at 8, and match Son.
For that matter Son could have a good season - decent value at 9 - and Harry looks cheap at 10.5.
    Spurs fixtures key obvs.

      What has Dele done lately?
Other 2 could be decent, but Spurs going to be very busy from the get go.

Dele had a (short) purple patch when Mourinho took over I seem to recall.

Yup, I was briefly on 3 Spuds at that time. Looking back, not a good look.

Son or Kane and no one in between imo. Spurs aren't going to score a ton of goals next season and it will be one of those 2 who will deliver imo.

What are people's thoughts on Gabriel Jesus?

He performed pretty well end of last season. Started every game basically in Aguero's absence. He has the underlying stats to backup a pick as well. If Aguero is being phased out this season, he could well be the club's starting forward for the bulk of the season making him incredible value at 9.5m.

    Same question for Foden.

How often do we expect him to play/start? Surely if he gets a run of games, at 6.5m, he's a snip.

Haven't we been saying the same of Jesus for a couple of years now? Still a wait and see for me. Foden too of course, but amazing if he is a straight replacement for David Silva. Seemed to start 2/3 during lockdown.

Foden is not a David Silva replacement. He's being pushed forward more which is actually good in FPL terms. He's challenging Mahrez and Torres for a wide forward role.

As for Jesus, last season something seemed to click. Guardiola finally seems to trust him more and is giving him more extended runs in the team. If he ups his finishing just a bit I can see him benching Kun for large swathes of the season.

It will be Pep roulette as always. Even more so this year with the tighter turnaround times. No one beyond KDB Sterling and Laporte are safe and Laporte is practically a perma-crock

I think once you get to the 9.5+ forwards you might as well just get Aguero himself - I'm assuming if both are fit Jesus won't be playing more than Kun

If Aguero is out long-term I always nab Jesus. He provides great value only when nailed.

Not touching Jesus with Aguero still at City.

Think Foden is not as "nailed" as some might think, he will get more minutes but still think that Mahrez and Bernardo are ahead of Foden in the picking order.

    Current draft, thoughts?
    McCarthy (Nyland)
van Dijk, Taylor, Alexander-Arnold (Ayling) (Ferguson)
De Bruyne, Fernandes, Ziyech, Greenwood (Saint-Maximin)
    Antonio, Werner, Bamford

My biggest concern is not owning Salah. Alternatively, I can downgrade VVD+Bamford+Werner and upgrade Ziyech to Salah.

Despite the same players popping up again and again in the RMTs, isn’t it funny how you can look at one and think “How is that only 100m? It looks amazing, surely that costs 103” and then look at another one and think “That’s awful, have they got 3m ITB?”

Do bench players not come on in FanTeam when your starters don't play? Or why can I not choose the order of my bench?
