Frisking the Fixtures

Which teams have the worst fixtures in the first six Gameweeks of 2020/21?

With the Premier League fixtures now released for 2020/21, we are able to assess the which teams we should invest in, and which we should avoid.

Our schedule sage Neale has already filled us in on the teams with the most appealing run of games, which you can READ HERE.

But for every swathe of blue on the Fantasy Football Scout Season Ticker, some clubs are faced with the Red Sea instead.

This article will assess why these clubs face such a tricky start to the new season, and whether or not they are able to overcome the unappealing nature of their fixtures.

If you haven’t already accessed the updated Season Ticker, and made use of its interactive features, make sure you do so by CLICKING HERE.

West Ham United

Pulisic and Willian continue fine FPL form as West Ham gear up for fixture swing

First six matches: NEW | ars | WOL | lei | tot | MCI

Over the first six Gameweeks of 2020/21, West Ham rank rock-bottom of the league, below even the four teams who don’t play in Gameweek 1.

That’s because, after a relatively cushy opening day clash with Newcastle at the London Stadium, David Moyes’ men face six of last season’s top eight between Gameweeks 2 and 7.

The away trips look particularly nasty, taking the Hammers to Arsenal, Leicester and Spurs in three of their first five while Anfield awaits them in Gameweek 7.

Their first three at home are not particularly appetising either with Wolves and Manchester City set to visit the London Stadium after Newcastle.

These fixtures will certainly go a long way in tempering any interest in Michail Antonio (£6.5m) who currently sits in 16.7% of Fantasy squads.

While the recently converted forward registered nine attacking returns during the restart, he managed just two goals in 10 appearances against West Ham’s first six opponents of 2020/21 across the whole of last season.

Perhaps the handy thing about such a brutal start to the campaign is that a large chunk of West Ham’s tough games will be out of the way by Gameweek 7.

It means that between Gameweeks 8 and 16, the Hammers sit top of the Season Ticker for appealing fixtures as they host Fulham, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Brighton during this period while facing Leeds and Southampton away.

That said, West Ham have previously been a team whose morale has been knocked when starting the season with tough fixtures. Antonio might have a good schedule by then but will he have the form and confidence to deliver on it by that point or not? Fantasy managers will have to keep a close eye on the Hammers through their sticky patch considering the light at the end of the tunnel.

We recently examined the points potential of West Ham’s defensive midfielder Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) in THIS MEMBERS ARTICLE and, like Antonio, interest is likely to wane now that the fixtures have been revealed.

The Czech Republic international was predominantly dangerous from set-play situations which could lead to some attacking returns in the opening six matches, but only against perhaps two or three of West Ham’s first opponents.

During the Project Restart period, Newcastle and Spurs were in the Premier League’s bottom four for headed goal attempts conceded. The same two clubs were also among the worst four for shots conceded from set-plays, while Arsenal gave up 33 of these between Gameweeks 30+ and 38+, bad enough for the division’s bottom eight.

Aston Villa

First six matches: — | SHU | ful | LIV | lei | LEE

There is unlikely to be much interest in Aston Villa assets at the start of the season given their tough fixtures, especially at the attacking end of the field.

After blanking in the opening round of action, Sheffield United and Liverpool’s usually reliable defences are the first two to come to Villa Park while they travel to Leicester in Gameweek 5.

The trip to Fulham and Gameweek 6 visit of Leeds are the only matches in this run that offer much in the way of attacking promise but do remember that Villa sacrificed a lot of their offensive threat for defensive stability during Project Restart.

In this period, Dean Smith’s men scored just seven goals; only Crystal Palace (five) and Norwich (one) finding the net less often.

That aforementioned defensive stability could offer some clean sheet potential against the newly-promoted sides and potentially Sheffield United, although Villa still only kept three clean sheets during Project Restart.

Crystal Palace look to be the team who rotate home games with Villa, so anyone with Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) in their team could combine him with what’s on offer here, but someone such as Matt Targett (£4.5m) might prove more useful between Gameweeks 7 and 12.

This is when Villa’s fixtures turn for the better, when Southampton, Brighton and Newcastle come to Villa Park, although road trips to Arsenal, West Ham and Wolves are still somewhat daunting and could discourage more than budget investment.

Burnley

First six matches: — | lei | SOU | new | wba | TOT

The case for Nick Pope (£5.5m) took another hit with the release of 2019/20’s fixtures.

While the Burnley shot-stopper could perform better than the usual £5.5m goalkeeper with his combination of clean sheets, saves and bonus, no fixture in Blank Gameweek 1 presents a huge problem.

Anyone previously looking at Pope was likely combining him with a £4.0m goalkeeper to save funds. With the fixtures now published, this approach would almost certainly result in playing with 10 men for Gameweek 1. After all, forking out for a £5.5m and £4.5m in combination, a total of £10.0m, is surely too much to spend in this department.

Beyond the Blank, the fixtures themselves are somewhat mixed. Clashes with Leicester (away) and Spurs (home) are the obvious trickier ones while a run of Southampton (home), Newcastle (away) and West Bromwich Albion (away) between Gameweeks 3 and 5 doesn’t look too bad at all.

Unfortunately, Burnley do not get much of a prolonged period of blue on the ticker for some time. Between Gameweeks 7 and 12 they face three top-six clubs in Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

Paired with Brighton (away), Crystal Palace (home) and Everton (home), the points potential for Pope during this period may not actually be too bad, considering his ability to get lots of saves and bonus even in the tougher matches – but it does not solve the issue of how to get him in a Fantasy squad in the first place.

Instead, Burnley’s schedule perhaps suits a £4.5m defensive rotation rather than more costly investment elsewhere. The Clarets pair home games with Leicester, who can offer up James Justin (£4.5m) in the same bracket as Charlie Taylor (£4.5m).

Leeds United

First six matches: liv | FUL | shu | MCI | WOL | avl

While there is a lot of buzz about having Leeds back in the Premier League this season, they certainly could have been rewarded with a kinder start to the campaign.

In the first six Gameweeks, they face Liverpool (away) and Manchester City (home) while also doing battle with the mean defences of Sheffield United and Wolves.

A Gameweek 2 might give the best insight into how Leeds will play in a sustained period of favourable matches, but they won’t get one of those into much later in 2020/21.

Between Gameweeks 7 and 12, Marcelo Bielsa’s men face Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester and are sixth-worst on the Season Ticker accordingly.

It takes until Gameweek 13 for Leeds to get a string of slightly more appealing games together in one go. Between then and Gameweek 18, they face Newcastle, Burnley and Southampton at home and travel to Manchester United, West Brom and Spurs.

At this point in time, there is plenty of uncertainty about how Leeds’ style of play will fare in the top-flight and a mixed bag in terms of fixtures over the first 12 Gameweeks is likely to limit investment perhaps only to the cheaper options such as Luke Ayling (£4.5m).

ALSO BE AWARE OF…

Arsenal’s initial start to the campaign is a very favourable one, pitting Mikel Arteta’s men against Fulham and West Ham. That is, of course, good news for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m), the Blank for Manchester City and Manchester United in the opening Gameweek catapulting him into the captaincy equation.

However, with those two games out of the way, Arsenal’s fixtures take a turn for the worse in Gameweek 3, as they travel to face Liverpool and Manchester City between then and Gameweek 5, while the home matches are against Sheffield United and Leicester.

Thankfully, Gameweek 3 is when Manchester City’s assets start to pick up, making a switch between Aubameyang and one of Pep Guardiola’s premium midfielders an easy choice that week.

We nearly gave Manchester City their own full heading in this article but stopped just short of doing so when we remembered how fixture-proof their players are capable of being. Instead, we decided only to make you aware of the fixture-related difficulties owners will have to deal with.

How De Bruyne and Sterling compare as FPL assets for 2020/21?

The Blank in Gameweek 1 does present a bit of an issue but, as we’ve already mentioned, a simple switch from Aubameyang to a City midfielder looks relatively simple in Gameweek 3.

Once Manchester City enter the Premier League fray, their fixtures could certainly have been nicer. Combined with the blank, trips to Wolves, Leeds and West Ham as well as home matches against Leicester and Arsenal are good enough only for a place in the bottom five on the Season Ticker.

However, should that really put us off? In games against Wolves, Leicester, Arsenal and West Ham last season (we obviously cannot include Leeds), who was the FPL midfielder that scored the most goals? Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) with a total of seven. And can you guess who had the most assists in matches against those clubs? Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) who assisted six times and scored four goals (10 attacking returns).

It is a similar story for Manchester United, whose Blank causes enough of a problem for the Season Ticker to mark them down, but their initial fixtures are still good enough to get a mention in our first Frisking the Fixtures article published on Thursday afternoon.

using-the-top-10000-ownership-to-increase-your-fpl-rank-andys-article 2

When the Season Ticker is filtered to display Gameweeks 2 to 7, the Red Devils rank seventh-best overall for their schedule.

During this period they play at home four times and even though they host Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal after Crystal Palace come to Old Trafford, these clubs are all sides Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men did well against last season. Throwing away trips to Brighton and Newcastle into the mix only adds to the appeal.

Against those six sides in 2019/20, Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) registered nine attacking returns, Anthony Martial (£9.0m) scored five goals and added three assists while Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) was involved in three goals in 333 minutes against that pool of teams.

We should also mention West Brom, who have a nice clean cut between tough and favourable fixtures between Gameweeks 3 and 4.

While the Baggies are probably best avoided when they face Leicester (home), Everton (away) and Chelsea (home) in the first three rounds, Gameweek 4 could be the time to consider Slaven Bilic’s men.

Between then and Gameweek 7, West Brom face Southampton (away), Burnley (home), Brighton (away) and Fulham (away).

I think the first one. Bellerin is risky with Cedric and AMN both decent at LB. Also injury prone. I think a Manchester player or two on the bench would be ideal, personally. And TAA is unfortunately too good value to ignore, especially if the alternative(s) isn't obvious.

yeah, the top one is pretty much a non-WC option, not sure what I'm saving it for but it could be handy. Has the added bonus of TAA as you say, also 1.5 ITB for Son->Bruno if I feel the need after GW1 (although I'd be worried about a mega backfire)

You'll probably have to play double Wolves defenders vs Man City in GW2 with that team.

Also Saka is too much rotation risk, I'm not sure I'd start with him considering you have a weak bench.

              It's pretty simple.

GW1 starts Sat 12 Sep 13:30. Once we're in GW1, do we have an free transfer?

I know they roll week by week, but just curious if we start with one...

The transfers refer to the coming week, though, don't they?

All the way through the season.

Like, when 'we're in' GW 38, there's not a transfer left over to take home and meet your grandparents.

GW1 you have weeks and weeks, and infinite transfers.

                GW2, you get one.

I see a transfer made on 14 September is a GW1 transfer as that's the week I'm in and that's the action I done. It doesn't mean that's the week a player will play.

This is why I said 'start' as GW1 is yet to start.

But I'm sure you knew that. Trolls be trolls.

Gameweek one is the first round of games, transfers for this happen beforehand and are in that respect gameweek one transfers (unlimited).

Then when the deadline hits, we're into gameweek two, and the transfers are then gameweek two transfers (one free).

I'm not confused. You might be but hopefully this clears it up.

The difference between Mitrovic and Wesley is that we know Mitrovic is capable of scoring in the prem because he’s done it. He’s not gonna reach last season Ings levels but he’s gonna be worth 6.

I dont take credit for this post at all, it was written by Turnernator06 in the FantasyPL Reddit, but I thought it was a very good post and some of you guys might like to read it, so I will post it here if thats ok.

A focus on Southamptons key 5 assets.
    Guide

Hi all. I have done a southampton guide for the last two seasons and thought I would do another one this season too. There is already a guide from u/jmsaint which is very good but I thought I would build on it with a specific analysis of 5 saints players of interest and analysis of the newly announced fixtures!

    Some underlying statistics

I produced a post for r/soccer a few weeks ago with a full statistical analysis of Southampton and will be reusing some of these as well as mentioning some new ones so have a look here if your hunger for statistics is not sufficiently satiated. - https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/hwe4wa/southampton_a_statistical_analysis/
Southampton: A tale of two seasons

So when analysing Southampton last year, one must do so with the simple conceit. We were basically a different team (two matches) after the Leicester defeat.

Before the defeat our starting 11 was in constant flux. We played Gunn in goal, but the back 4 were often a back 5, heavily featured Vestergaard and Yoshida and omitted Stephens, and had 5 different fullbacks/wingbacks (Valery, Bertrand, Danso, Stephens, Hojbjerg). Up front we were also constantly chopping and changing, moving from a front 2 to a front 3 regularly with Adams, Ings, Long, Redmond, Boufal, Djenepo all being played with Redmond the only one having any regularity.

Coming into the international break we were 19th and had no hope. During the international break Hasenhuttl restructured the team entirely. He selected one starting 11 (dropping 4 of our former back 6 in the process) and cemented a front two of Long and Ings, sticking with a 4222.

This is relevant twofold. Firstly, after this change Southampton became the 4th best team pointswise (https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/formtabelle/wettbewerb/GB1?saison_id=2019&min=14&max=38) in the country for the remaining 25 games. Therefore getting one of their RB's for example at 4.5m is a mad steal, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. And secondly, it taught Hasenhuttl the valuable lesson of try not to chop and change. The starting 11 established that day were:

    McCarthy

    Cedric Stephens Bednarek Bertrand

    Armstrong JWP Hojbjerg Redmond

    Ings Long

in a constant 4222 formation. Since that day only three major changes have taken place. Cedric was sold and replaced by Kyle Walker-Peters (briefly by Valery but he is unlikely to start much going forward), Hojbjerg was dropped near the end for Romeu, causing our form to go up dramatically. And Adams was finally given his chance to play next to Ings. A chance he took fantastic advantage of

TLDR: Saints were shite until mid November, then something happened of which we do not speak, and almost the entire team was changed. After that saints became a top 6 at least quality side, judging them after november will result in a better idea of the current strength of the side post Gunn, Vestergaard, and Danso
    Starting 11 and depth chart

Kind of already covered in the previous post but here is our starting 11.

    McCarthy (Gunn Forster)
KWP Stephens Bednarek Bertrand (Valery Vestergaard Salisu Volkins)
Armstrong Ward-Prowse Someone-New Redmond (Smallbone Smallbone Romeu Djenepo)
    Ings Adams (Long Obafemi)

Most players here are completely nailed. The big uncertainties are what will our center back pairing be, given we just signed a highly rated Salisu, and what will we end up doing about the center mid spot.

    First 10 Fixtures:
    Cry (A) Tot (H) Bur (A) WBA (H) Che (A) Eve (H) Avl (A) New (H) Wol (A) Mun (H)

Pretty nice opening fixtures really. Much has been made of Southampton being much better away than at home last season but personally I think it is a statistical anomaly and will revert to mean next season. We were already beginning to perform better at home at the end of last season with victories against City and Sheffield United with a draw at Arsenal
Statistical analysis of the 5 assets

So rather than doing a breakdown of the whole squad (again, a great one of these was done by u/jmsaint https://www.reddit.com/r/FantasyPL/comments/ia9jlx/preseason_guide_southampton/) I will be doing a deeper dive into the stats of the 5 players I think you should be considering for Southampton.

    McCarthy

Alex McCarthy is the best 4.5m keeper in the game, in my opinion. He achieved 104 points in 2520 minutes, 3.7 points per 90. For reference Ryan got 3.55. This is on a par with 5.0 keepers like Dubravka and Guiata and above Pickford. Owing to this McCarthy should really have been a midrange 5.0m keeper so at 4.5m he represents value.

McCarthy is 5th in the league for xG prevented (3.6) joint with Schmeichel and only below Lloris, Henderson, Guiata and Dubravka. He is middle of the league for minutes per save (31.1) but ahead of his biggest competitor Ryan (29.1). Finally his save % is again pretty midrange at 69.9 but still ahead of Ryan who has a save % of 69.6.

    Verdict

McCarthy outperforms Ryan by almost every metric but not by that big a margin. He is also getting a new CB in in Salisu and a new DM in who will hopefully be significantly less error prone than Hojbjerg. Consider if you want to double up on saints defence.

    Kyle Walker-Peters

Kyle Walker-Peters is, again in my opinion, the best 4.5m defender in the game. After Walker-Peters came in to the saints team, saints got the 3rd most points in the league with joint 4th least goals conceded. A lot of the points defensively are the same as those stated for McCarthy but KWP also carries good attacking threat.

As part of the Spurs set up in the league last season KWP got 3 assists in 300 minutes, the season before he got 2 assists in 180 minutes. Owing to this his goal contributions per minute are huge before joining saints. Obviously, which some a small sample size take this with a massive grain of salt.

Since joining Saints KWP has managed 1 assist and 2 CS in 900 minutes. This isn't as big as he had at spurs (obviously) but is still a respectable return and is likely to go up as he plays more. and has a preseason to get used to the team.

    Verdict

KWP is a fantastic asset. At 5m him and Bertrand would both be watchlist worthy but at 4.5m he is probably one of the best value defenders in the game (After Trent obviously)

    Armstrong

I came in to this season thinking if Armstrong was 6.5m I would have him. He is Southamptons furthest forward midfielder, had an excellent post lockdown haul (2 goals and 3 assists in 8 games) and over the course of the season looked very talented. He then was priced at 5.5m. For me this is daylight robbery. Since the reshuffle in November (see above) he got 5 goals and 4 assists in 16 starts. Across the season Armstrong's stats of 0.47 actual g+a per 90 are better than Grealish (0.41), Zaha (0.27), Tielemans (0.28), and Maddison (0.377). Only including games from after the November reshuffle when Armstrong started playing regularly in his "number 10 on the right" role, Armstrong has a actual g+a per 90 of 0.60, this beats out Richarlison (0.41) and Mount (0.41).

He overperformed his xG by 2.4 and his xA by 1.6. This could suggest next season he reverts to mean, or that he is a talented finisher and has the luxury of playing in a team with Danny Ings who is one of the biggest overperformers of xG in the league.

You will notice in this comparison I have been comparing to the likes of Richarlison, Maddison, Zaha and Grealish. This is because this is where Armstrongs' stats are. If you compare him to ASM (0.37), Almiron (0.17), Soucek (0.25) or JWP (0.23) Amstrong (0.49 or 0.60 in post Nov period) blows them all away. He should be priced with these stats at about 7.5-8.5m and is at 5.5m. He could be the biggest steal in FPL if he keeps up these stats.

The only concern is if Djenepo starts to take minutes once fit, although this seems unlikely to me as Armstrong is key to the way we play. Or that the 1704 mins he played (1353 post Nov) are not a sufficient sample size and he regresses (also potentially suggested by xG and xA), this I cannot comment on.

    Verdict

    Get Armstrong in your team!

    Ings

Ings is great. I think everyone knows this by this point. Here is what I wrote on him in my other stats thread:

"Danny Ings is statistically the best striker in the league this season (or one of, but I like the hyperbole). His expected goals vs actual goals (on target) is number one in the league. His expected goal involvement vs actual goal involvement is 3rd only after Aubamayang and Greenwood. And that is, as previously established, alongside other players who cannot finish chances. He is number 1 in tackles for forwards and number 2 in tackles won (behind Ayew). And number 6 in recoveries."

I don't need to tell you much about Ings so all I will say is I think he is still a superb option and 8.5m is about where I would have expected him to be priced. He may regress owing to his big over-performance on xG but I don't think it will be too bad, man is a natural finisher. Also worthy of note Ings output actually dropped post Nov (0.77 season, 0.67 postNov)

    Verdict

Ings is great, probably will regress a bit, still very competitive at his price range.

    Adams

Finally, Che Adams, my punt. Che is a great player who had some horrendous luck coupled with a loss of confidence at the start of the season. He was part of the saints team that sank to 19th pre november and was part of the cull that saw fortune turn around. Of that cull, however, he is the only player to meaningfully fight his way back in. Since then he has been very good. He has 4 goals and 4 assists in 1095 minutes across the season (0.65 g+a per 90) if you take post november stats he is 1.13 g+a per 90 which is obviously absolutely insane. This is the very definition of a "too small sample size" though with a minutes started post november of 636. Either way, some other g+a per 90's of top forwards include Kane (0.69), Vardy (0.89), Martial (0.89), and Ings (0.77 season, 0.67 postNov). Some closer to Che's price-range Richarlison (0.41), Wood (0.55), Antonio (0.71), and Jiminez (0.66). You may have noticed Antonio is terrific value, this isn't a West Ham analysis but if It was I would be chatting about that as an asset too.

Underlying stats Che overperforms xA by 1.39 and underperforms xG by 1.29. The simple explanation is Ings is better than him at finishing by a fair margin.

    Verdict

Adams stats are good across the season and superb post-November. Based on the former he should be about 7m and the latter he should be 10m. The latter is obviously patently ridiculous and serves as a good warning against small sample sizes. However if you want a punt he is still very underpriced for his stats across the season.
    Final thoughts

McCarthy is the best 4.5m keeper, but you may not want to double up on saints def. KWP is probably the best 4.5m defender, I would get him if you are picking between him and McCarthy as he has the potential for good attacking returns and Ryan isn't that far behind McCarthy. Armstrong is a mad steal, jump on that train immediately, his stats are excellent and he passes the eye test. Ings is a good pick, about the right price. Adams is a risky punt but if he keeps his post-lockdown form up you want to be on that train.

EDIT: My current team to show how I fit in these players

    Ryan (Button)
    TAA KWP Doherty (Ferguson Struijk)
Salah, KdB, Ziyech, Armstrong, (Stephens (will be Reed if he goes to Fulham))
    Werner, Adams, Jimenez

Well... first draft and the full £100m all used up.

    McCarthy / (Meslier)
    TAA / Justin / Vinagre / (KWP) / (Dallas)
    Salah (C) / Son / Auba / Ziyech / Soucek
    Ings / Antonio / (Wickham)

    Any feedback appreciated? Solid team?

Of course this could all change if the Manchester clubs are squeezed late into GW 1 with midweek fixtures...

Not keen sorry. Antonio apart from gw1 has horrible fixtures and double up with soucek is a recipe for disaster. Ings overpriced . Can't argue with the rest 🙂 gl

I would yep. Isn't Jimmy the same price than ings ? Antonio to mitro could allow soucek to Armstrong for example

There’s a lot of Armstrong love around

        Antonio (and Ings) seem fixture-proof

Does the concept of a cheap playing 5th mid (5.5-6.5) ever work long term? Isn't it better to get a 3rd forward at the same price instead?

Armstrong is the only one I see that could potentially outperform a striker in the same price class. Otherwise, I'd personally go with a striker all day.

Armstrong is the only mid at that price im considering based on fixtures. If Soucek had decent fixtures then I might have given him a shot, but it would have been part of a rotation, wouldnt want to play him every week.

Typically though, I'd stretch for Mitro all day long, or even Egan/Davies instead.

In this instance im willing to give Armstrong a run, if it doesnt work out I'll move to a defender probably as I already have Mitro.

placeholder for Wood (GW1&2 probably) - Antonio/Adams the more obvious ones - is Dwight Gayle a thing? 😆

If you have Auba (c) GW2 and Greenwood, that should be enough to avoid rushing Fernandes in GW2 right?

    Better duo from the start?

    A) Son + Mitro
    B) Maddison + Jimenez

I’d go A - easier to switch Son to Chelsea mids, Greenwood, Mahrez/Foden etc once we have some data. Not many forwards 7-8m to switch Jim to

I dont really have any plans for the Manchester players, other than Auba>KDB for GW3.
I dont think its too big a deal, all I really want is KDB and Bruno probably.

If they rise tho it'll be annoying

Always hope it will be November but never make it that far. Would rather take a hit or 2 while getting more Manchester clubs data rather than loading up immediately
