What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

It turns out ‘Upside Chasing’ is in vogue these days – but how does it work and how can it help you to Fantasy Premier League success in 2020/21?

As a proponent of this strategy, I thought it would be a good idea to address this buzz-word and, at the same time, look at some of the numbers behind how it works.

It is a style of play that underpinned a successful 2019/20 campaign for me and there’s no reason why you can’t use a similar approach this time around.

So… how does it work? Let’s find out.

What is Upside Chasing?

How De Bruyne and Sterling compare as FPL assets for 2020/21?

When you’re faced with tough Fantasy decisions, Upside Chasing is when you pick the option that has the highest ceiling, the best chance of scoring you a massive points haul.

Crucially, Upside Chasing also means recalibrating your mind in terms of what you perceive to be a “high risk” move.

If there is merit in choosing a less popular player, that has a higher ceiling, backed up by eye-test and data, the only reason that choice could be a risk is if you were to pay attention to ownership and, to a certain extent, value (which we’ll talk about later).

Now, there is nothing wrong with paying attention to these factors. I certainly don’t ignore them completely but I would rather play FPL based on what I see on the football pitch and in the Members Area. If I started allowing myself to be mostly led by ownership percentages, I would take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror, I can tell you now.

I’m not saying that playing the percentage game is wrong; I do a fair bit of it. But you should not be scared of the ownership to the extent that it makes you act against your instinct when they are watching a game, catching some highlights on Match of the Day or executing a deep dive into the FFS Members Area

Simply put, Upside Chasing is about making sure I’m doing the fun (and right) thing rather than letting others dictate my game.

How did I implement Upside Chasing in 2019/20?

Knowing how Upside Chasing works is one thing. Understanding how to put it into practice on specific decisions is something else entirely.

Those of you who read this article last year will know how the performance of top players often varies depending on who the opponent is. Tracking this across a season is the key to understanding the part fixtures play in Upside Chasing.

I noticed early last season that there were a lot of big hitters and I couldn’t own all of them at the same time. This would lead to a high variance in points between Gameweeks.

I also noted that there were a lot of glue guys (set-and-forget options) in my team, primarily in the low to mid-price bracket and I held them for long parts of the season without spending transfers there. This was most of my defence and players like Raúl Jiménez (£8.5m) who just kept on delivering.

I loosely assumed that spending transfers in defence would lead to a net 15 to 20 point profit or loss over five to six Gameweeks.

I could attempt to make the same gain in a single Gameweek with high-impact big-hitter switching for captaincies primarily based on fixtures. This impact was even greater when the person I was captaining had low ownership.

This constant big-hitter switching based on fixtures is a risky strategy and you need to compromise on value for these players as well as not being afraid of ownership while doing the same.

It also a fair assumption to make that some players are not set-and-forget assets and will not maintain consistent form throughout the season as we saw with Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) during his first Liverpool campaign.

If that is the case, and you see a big hitter showcasing that kind of form throughout the season, you don’t need to move him.

Loosely put, this was the largely the thinking implemented last season but there are a lot more moving parts to it.

You don’t look at this as a hard and fast rule and should remain reactive to all the curve balls that FPL throws at you.

In fact, I might not even implement Upside Chasing this season as I strongly believe in having no rules or pre-conceived notions… although it is in my DNA, more often than not, to pick the high-ceiling option.

I realised while talking to Walsh on an FML FPL podcast appearance that it subconsciously stems from years of playing monthly FPL competitions where I used to take multiple hits at the end of the month and I got very used to having an ideal team on paper.

Anyway, enough subjective jabber for now. Let’s dive into the juicy numbers which may or may not validate the thinking behind big-hitter switching for the Upside Chasing theory. This section is for FFS Premium Members only.

Here for the thoughts as usual. I really found those numbers very interesting when delving into the data. Especially for Sergio, KdB & Trent.

      Great article mate!

Looks like if I'm going to cap an United attacker it has to be Bruno.

That would be a very interesting subset of data - especially for (c) pick. I assume it'd be 75% / 25% home and away - but who knows. Didn't expect to see some of those numbers so something might jump out.

Is there a way to do a table like that on the members area, or is it just a result of a good ol' manual labour on excel? Nevertheless, I found the article very interesting and I'll take a look on this during the season, thanks!

Yeah - fair point on Trent - was thinking attackers. While it was last season i don't see any reason there wil be a huge regression in KDB's numbers - if anything, if he keeps pens its more positive.

      Great post.

I've never called it upside chasing but it's method I guess I've used as I constantly tweak my team (and captains) for about a 4 week outlook - and work toward good fixture swings - breaking the season up into 2 x 2ft sets (4 in, 4 out over 4 weeks). I used this nicely start/middle of last season before lockdown then missed restart.

EO/Coverage/% picked etc never really interested me - but see a LOT of focus here - apart from spotting a trend if I've missed some footy.

Team value I do put some emphasis on though. If you have a 5-6m gain by the end of the season that's a lot of potential.

So with Team value, could be potential on focusing on that for the glue guys.

Seems like the idea for using transfers for big hitters and keeping cheaper players for the most parts of the season is well grounded statistically as it coincides with conclusions from matematically safe FPL. https://mathematicallysafe.wordpress.com/

What are everyone's thoughts on including Neco Williams as a 4.0 backup (in case TAA sits).

With my current squad set up, I can't afford more than 2 Liverpool assets anyways, so the 3rd slot isn't necessary for me.

I would rather have Ferguson as a 4.0 that might play more often because I have Kenan Davis as 3rd forward just for the price and want 2 sub that I don't mind playing at times.

I asked this a few days ago. The best answer that put me off was that Trent normally makes a cameo when he starts on the bench so you still get 1 point from him even if Williams gets a cleanie. Not to mention he blocks a pool slot as others have said.

So was thinking about tripling up on Liverpool defence and Captaining Aubamayang wk 1 and 2.

This allows me to bench Bruno or Rashford in GW1. While having Son and Werner.

I think this is a good idea, but could backfire. I am between this and just using my Wildcard after gw1 to load up on Manc players

Can only captain one of Salah or Aubamayang.
Auba has 2 good fixtures to start off with.
He will then be moved to KDB.

Son is good value and a decent (vc) in gw 1.

Triple defence is a plan purely to focus my premium picks around United,City and Aubamayang.

Yeh it’s not that I don’t like Salah or Mane, their great picks but so are a lot of others.
Trent have the armband if Liverpool have the best fixture.
Do you have Doherty as well?

It's risky - but the if it's not paying off one or two could be easily be switched in GW3 with a pivot to bigger MF.

I'm not one to start without potential and think Salah could destroy Leeds late on (in the spirit of upside chasing) - so just TAA + Mo for me.

Hi lateriser. Thanks for the article. FPL strategies are still something anew to me.

You talk about not picking players based on percentage of ownership. Could you explain more please?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a low or highly owned players?

You talk about the fun aspect of the game, does focusing on player owned percentages distract from that? I assume it does.

Hi Soyo. It all depends on your own style and comfort level but sometimes people own 'highly owned' players just as a safety mechanism or a shield pick. The gains or falls are much more drastic with low owned players but the point i'm trying to make is select your team based on merit, stats and eye-test. Ownership is not something we should ideally look at first (and that is just my point of view).

I just wrote a massive long reply to this but lost internet 🙁

CBA to write it all out again but essentially was saying I agree on the whole with the principle of not factoring ownership too highly in decision-making, but I think early on in the season it can be helpful.

For instance, with Werner, there isn't really any data to suggest whether he will start on fire or not, but as the highest owned striker, I'm very happy to step on board - if he fails it isn't a big loss and if he fires then that's great.

I think it could be helpful to start the season in a largely template-heavy way as a stable base from which to make the upside chasing moves.

When you speak of ownership - do you think there's a difference between overall FPL ownership or the top 10k/1k?

I know upside chasing doesn't play into this, but would the top tier influence your thinking at all?

Highly owned players tend to drop in price faster. Therefore in the beginning of the season it is important to make bigger value of your squad so you can afford high caliber players in the end of the season.

    One of my favourite articles.

You had a hypothesis, you made an experiment to test its validity, and then proved the hypothesis true with the data. Great science.

"Upside-chasing" is fast evolving from a hypothesis into a full-blown Theory.

It's a volatile environment, with a constantly changing landscape. Upside-chasing may not be as useful this season. I get you.

Every season I take too many hits. Sometimes unnecessary in hindsight.
So focusing in on high upside with better planning is a good plan.

Yeah I think planning can help avoid hits. There is fervent stigma attached to planning transfers in advance
on here, but I believe there's a lot of merit to it. Just be adaptable.

I don't intend to take as many hits as LR does, it's just not my game.

I think a lot of people's issue isn't with planning hits per se, but doing so from the start of the season.

In the early game weeks, there is the most uncertainty, and therefore we want to be as flexible as possible.

Planning your first three FTs could pay off but personally I'd rather be as flexible as possible to move onto emerging trends that might not be clear preseason

Auba back in for week 8 is an obvious one.
Actually week 8, quite a fixture shift, maybe a good time for a wildcard, in favour of Arsenal, Brighton, Burnley, Palace, West Ham.
Free hit week 11 maybe: Man City and Chelsea based team.

Long term who is more likely to start games?

    Ferguson or Mitchell?

Anguissa is an option at 4.5. This guy started all games at Villarreal, he can definitely be one of the best in Fulham.

Yeah saw that on Reddit. If Fulham manage to keep him he looks like a solid 4.5m.

Which position does he play, same as Reed? Heard they're trying to sign Reed.

He was a CDM but lately he is a box to box mid

I haven't seen a lot of him but seeing he's a cdm and scored twice in 36 games last season you wouldn't think he'd light the prem on fire. But definitely another 4.5 option that could play regularly that I hadn't really considered so cheers.

After restart he was playing as a box to box mid this is why he got 1g 1a after restart

'Upside Chasing' isn't really in vogue beyond this forum.

It's just a term over-used on here recently to explain breaking %, because 'My gut tells me a different story' doesn't sound quite as snazzy.

Many of us used to refer to it as premium hokey-cokey or similar, as I wrote about two seasons ago: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2019/01/16/being-on-time-to-the-points-part-can-save-your-fpl-season/

It's a great strategy if you're aiming high (like top 1k) and don't mind too much if it crashes and burns. Lots of potential upside, with some potential downside. My take is that it's not so much about "gut feel" as it is about being prepared to move quickly and often for heavy hitters who could explode that gameweek. It's the opposite of being what's considered a patient manager.

Looks like you employed a bit of “downside chasing” while reading this article.

Are you saying 'upside chasing' is really just gut feel?

There's a lot to be said for these 'cognitive shortcuts'
or buzzwords that help us make more rational decisions in the heat of the moment when being influenced by emotion. 'Never captain a defender' is another useful one.

I wonder how well a team did last year targeting the highest ownership players for gw 1 and tweaking without hits to get the top 10k ownership team? Might be a simple successful strategy.

Hey Pranil. Love how you played FPL last season. Instead of upside chasing I'm more interested in the glue guys. Who all do you consider the glue guys this season?

Agree on first 5. Hard to squeeze Pope in though.

Martial depends if he can keep up his form all season

Bookmarked. I'll need this captaincy table more than a few times during the season. Thanks for including TAA. Seems I'll move forward with the Bruno + KDB/Sterling + TAA captaincy rotation. I keep swinging between KDB and Sterling, but this pushes me back to KDB for now, as he can be the default captain while Bruno gets Man U's easiest games instead (would be the other way if I get Sterling) and TAA (C) when glaringly obvious

    Thanks, LR

Morning chaps. I’m seeing a lot of managers select McCarthy in goal. Unless I have missed some news, is Forster set to return and after a decent season push for the No1 spot?

        Cheers all, appreciate any replies.

I’ve not heard anything about Forster.
Ideally I’d like Martinez if he’s starting.

McCarthy is just there at the moment as a 4.5m holder.
