What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

It turns out ‘Upside Chasing’ is in vogue these days – but how does it work and how can it help you to Fantasy Premier League success in 2020/21?

As a proponent of this strategy, I thought it would be a good idea to address this buzz-word and, at the same time, look at some of the numbers behind how it works.

It is a style of play that underpinned a successful 2019/20 campaign for me and there’s no reason why you can’t use a similar approach this time around.

So… how does it work? Let’s find out.

What is Upside Chasing?

How De Bruyne and Sterling compare as FPL assets for 2020/21?

When you’re faced with tough Fantasy decisions, Upside Chasing is when you pick the option that has the highest ceiling, the best chance of scoring you a massive points haul.

Crucially, Upside Chasing also means recalibrating your mind in terms of what you perceive to be a “high risk” move.

If there is merit in choosing a less popular player, that has a higher ceiling, backed up by eye-test and data, the only reason that choice could be a risk is if you were to pay attention to ownership and, to a certain extent, value (which we’ll talk about later).

Now, there is nothing wrong with paying attention to these factors. I certainly don’t ignore them completely but I would rather play FPL based on what I see on the football pitch and in the Members Area. If I started allowing myself to be mostly led by ownership percentages, I would take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror, I can tell you now.

I’m not saying that playing the percentage game is wrong; I do a fair bit of it. But you should not be scared of the ownership to the extent that it makes you act against your instinct when they are watching a game, catching some highlights on Match of the Day or executing a deep dive into the FFS Members Area

Simply put, Upside Chasing is about making sure I’m doing the fun (and right) thing rather than letting others dictate my game.

How did I implement Upside Chasing in 2019/20?

Knowing how Upside Chasing works is one thing. Understanding how to put it into practice on specific decisions is something else entirely.

Those of you who read this article last year will know how the performance of top players often varies depending on who the opponent is. Tracking this across a season is the key to understanding the part fixtures play in Upside Chasing.

I noticed early last season that there were a lot of big hitters and I couldn’t own all of them at the same time. This would lead to a high variance in points between Gameweeks.

I also noted that there were a lot of glue guys (set-and-forget options) in my team, primarily in the low to mid-price bracket and I held them for long parts of the season without spending transfers there. This was most of my defence and players like Raúl Jiménez (£8.5m) who just kept on delivering.

I loosely assumed that spending transfers in defence would lead to a net 15 to 20 point profit or loss over five to six Gameweeks.

I could attempt to make the same gain in a single Gameweek with high-impact big-hitter switching for captaincies primarily based on fixtures. This impact was even greater when the person I was captaining had low ownership.

This constant big-hitter switching based on fixtures is a risky strategy and you need to compromise on value for these players as well as not being afraid of ownership while doing the same.

It also a fair assumption to make that some players are not set-and-forget assets and will not maintain consistent form throughout the season as we saw with Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) during his first Liverpool campaign.

If that is the case, and you see a big hitter showcasing that kind of form throughout the season, you don’t need to move him.

Loosely put, this was the largely the thinking implemented last season but there are a lot more moving parts to it.

You don’t look at this as a hard and fast rule and should remain reactive to all the curve balls that FPL throws at you.

In fact, I might not even implement Upside Chasing this season as I strongly believe in having no rules or pre-conceived notions… although it is in my DNA, more often than not, to pick the high-ceiling option.

I realised while talking to Walsh on an FML FPL podcast appearance that it subconsciously stems from years of playing monthly FPL competitions where I used to take multiple hits at the end of the month and I got very used to having an ideal team on paper.

Anyway, enough subjective jabber for now. Let’s dive into the juicy numbers which may or may not validate the thinking behind big-hitter switching for the Upside Chasing theory. This section is for FFS Premium Members only.

Great article that. Also I think a dive into NPG/A along with this would've helped further more as that would remove the penalty inflation that you mentioned for Bruno for e.g.

If you mean the point around Rashford, if I could have used an eyebrow raise emoji after it I would have. That anomaly for me points out a pretty big flaw in the data.

They way I see this is that Dier + Davies are more expensive than the base-price solid defenders - I would be asking whether they were worth the price and potentially having Armstrong instead of Greenwood...

I've put KDB on my bench from the off because he stays from GW2 no matter what.
After Kev, I'll have one premium midfielder and one premium forward. By starting with Auba and Kane, I can move to any in the game, making 1FT when a new bottom-6 victim presents itself.

The idea of having your team glued/solidified and then using transfers on not just swapping big hitters in terms of team coverage, but also the accessibility to Sterling and Mane if it transpires they are hot at that point... all very appealing

In retrospect there are some dismal bandwagons across the season... players like Haller last season. Spending transfers to get him in... and then the inevitable transfer(s) to get him out

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

Some bandwagons work: Ings, Pukki, Cantwell. Selling a cheap player who's lost form can be delayed by one GW while you prioritize the upside chasing captain for that GW only, then keep the new premium for some GWs and address the underperforming cheapie next

      1. Ser Davos
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, I'm still open minded to bandwagons, but buying Pukki post hat-trick was classic points chasing and I'm not sure how useful Cantwell was mid season onwards (I'm sure to some he was a useful auto sub to some)

But let's not pretend they sustained much.

Ings, yes, a classic sustainable, fantastic bandwagon.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years

Oh, definitely, sell them when they go bad. I'm just saying it can be merged with the upside chasing strategy without needing hits, just by delaying the cheap guy's sale by one GW or two, as they won't have as much of an impact as a premium captain switch

No sure if it was mentioned/discussed here but Sheffield Utd and Southampton defenders rotate quite nicely...even poor run of fixtures from Sheffield (GW 6/7/8) can be covered by Southampton.
Only downside is that you can't have two 4.5 defenders...Sheffield cheapest defender is 5 mil.
I'm having McCarthy as set and forget option - I'm quite keen to include this rotation as an option...

Yes, we definitely need to find good rotation of 3 players to cover 2 spots if possible. Would be helpful. This is only way to get more premium assets.

Currently only going with Salah as the premium mid. Got Ings, Werner and Vardy. If you can use the money effectively elsewhere why would it be? Vardy especially is being well underappreciated considering his fixtures now and form after the restart, even if Leicester's wasn't great.

Well, I'm starting with Salah but he is giving way to Bruno in GW2. Since I'm planing to WC early - I will get him back.
You can cover Bruno (Rashford for example) but KDB and Salah - nah...We will just have to try and rotate rest.

  12. @persecuted_by_mods

Great article, upside chasing in terms of shifting premiums is exactly how I haven't played fpl, ever!

I always play the fixtures with mid priced players and try to jump on them. Again for me the psychology of it if I remove a big hitter for another and the one I had explodes is too much for me and would be too annoying. So while I see the merits and wish you luck I don't think this is a playstyle for me

      1. Ser Davos
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

This is all very true, but what I love about this strategy is that you're not then stuck ruminating in those lost points. Quite possibly the guy you've just let go is the guy coming back in a week or two's transfer for a juicy fixture

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
            3 years, 8 months ago

True but then the worry for me is you flip flop and miss the points again! Especially likely when moving big hitters who can explode at any time. Granted if a player has a sea of tough reds and another has a sea of easy blue fixtures then I will jump ship but good luck to anyone attempting this method, it certainly isn't for me. Though I will definitely try to be a bit less focused on the negatives and focus more on the positives this time around

              • 8 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, I could imagine a scenario where say the KDB slot is permanent and then the second slot is rotated with Salah - Bruno and beyond. Some points will be lost and the rest of the team needs to be stick and pick.

I am not that comfortable with the style either, so I will try to get a settled team at the start (as per my community article on last year's winner). Then if I have the luxury of that, then I can start targetting opponents with some switches but would rather do that with the next 3,4,5 fixtures in mind than just one.

I guess if you are following this strategy, you will have to stick with throughout the season because their is bound to be some fail "punts" every now and then.

If you are going to stop following this strategy after just couple of failed punts then this is probably not for you. Have to ride bad weeks in order to get those super GWs! 😀

Where you may end up stumbling with this tactic is the price changes. Yeah, Kane and Kun are the same price at the start but that may/will change. You will need to keep at least a couple of £0.2 itb at all times

The price changes are factored in. First transfer in GW3 is Auba to Bruno. Subsequent transfers between forwards = 0-0.5m. None should drop in price anyway.
My unchanging 5-man strong defence makes concentrating transfers on a few positions more viable.

Where the whole thing breaks down is that according to Lateriser, Kane is poor against the weakest defences. I've got a second table with more Vardy than Kane that works okay.

I wouldn't expect to follow the whole thing though; 3 or 4 games should be enough to give info on unknown factors such as how Werner shapes up and what the weakest defences actually are.

"... Where the whole thing breaks down is that according to Lateriser, Kane is poor against the weakest defences ...". Agree. The other concern with this approach might be MCI rotation ...

Interested to see if you go with this and how you get on - I can't see you having the luxury of those transfers between GW3-7 unless you get very lucky, regardless of how 'set and forget' the rest of your team is...

Why waste 4 FTs here? Surely there can be a better strategy

          GW4 aguero kane aguero
          GW5 kane aguero kane
          GW6 aguero kane aguero

Such as? Own both? That would wreck my stable team and one can't be captained.

My defence is stable with 3 Pool and Doherty. My mid will be pinned by KDB and Bruno.

Again, I'm not saying I'll follow it slavishly - other premiums might step into the limelight, injuries might occur. But I like the system here.

            Since you're asking:

            McCarthy (Steer)
            TAA, VVD, Robbo, Doherty, Taylor
Aube (>Bruno in GW3), KDB, Armstrong, Soucek, Ritchie
            Kane (rotating premium), Mitrovic (Davis)

Apart from Davis who's a dud, the bench and formation rotates. Doherty and Taylor can rotate although a back 5 will not be uncommon. Mitrovic and Armstrong rotate although both can play unless the fixture is awful. Soucek, Ritchie, Armstrong, Mitro and Davis are all expendable when cheap bandwagons emerge. There will be 1.5m minus price rises itb from GW3 to catch unexpected bargains. There are GWs when a player stays and is captained in successive weeks, allowing 2FTs for any restructuring such as losing a premium defender to catch a midfielder.

Cheers. I don't like the strategy of faffing around with 4.5 defenders, chasing form & fixtures at that level - too random. Chasing after a handful of premiums seems less arbitrary to me.

I really don't like Mitro as a pick, actually. I'd love to move him on - it's simply a question of price. In GW3 when I trade in Auba for Bruno and have cash to spare, and paying 0.5 extra for Wood will be viable, but I'll wait a GW or 2, making sure there are no other fires to put out of better options around.

I paid membership fees by Paypal last night and at the moment I can only see members information in the articles (like in LR's Upside Chasing).
When I click on "Members Area Homepage", there is no access to the sidebar and the various pages such as "Player Stats" or "Rate My Team Tool".

        Morning all,

Exploring different 5.0 mid options other than Soucek. He was everyone's go-to enabler until the fixtures got released. Just wondering if people have considered any of the below and what your thoughts were:

        A. Matt Ritchie - Newcastle have 2 good opening fixtures but then a bit of a tougher run against the likes of Utd, Spurs, Wolves;
        B. Sander Berge - Not the best opening 5 fixtures, but not the worst either. Could be an option, but I am not sold on him;
        C. Hojbjerg - Spurs have good fixtures and according to the article I read, he played well in the friendly. Granted it was Ipswich;
        D. Any of the 5.0 Fulham mids - Not sure who stands out, has anyone seen much of Fulham last season to give some insight?

I've currently got Soucek and Ritchie, which is not ideal. Rumours Ritchie is for sale, so I need to monitor his status. Below 5.5 there's a dearth of even benchable options in midfield.

You can end up with 8 players on the pitch.
          Greenwood is the issue there.
If you stick with that plan - you must sacrifice elsewhere.
Probably downgrade forward and boost defense...1 - 1.5 mil can fix it.

What does the impending move of Ainsley Maitland-Niles mean for Doherty (waiting for the team to pronounce his name correctly still)? Will AMN be on the right of a back three, or a right sided midfielder with Doherty flanking? Based on wingback stats there is no way that Doherty loses that spot... but teams like Wolves can't spend big for the bench, surely.

You think? AMN plays on the right, Vinagre on the left. Of course fullbacks can switch, Irwin did this all the time and remains one of United's most successful players in that position... But, that being said, is AMN then to be considered a misclassified player? Settled at the right of a midfield duo? He did play 1300 minutes last season, which is a decent amount considering.

I suppose, as said below, we'll know more when the player is signed and presented to the masses... I wonder are we looking at some sea-change in formation as a result. I do keep hearing that Jimi won't start the season due to an expected move to Italy, but this is such a great transfer window. Season just ended, mad rush to buy or sell because of financial reasons as much as team balance... pure bamboozlement.

Maitland-Niles isn’t a threat to Doherty, Maitland-Niles is a makeshift full back at best, Doherty is a quality wing back. Imagine Maitland-Niles is for midfield.

I couple of seasons ago I remember someone digging into the stats regarding always selecting the backup keeper instead of the first choice keeper.
(When they are in the same team of course - Like Ryan/ Button)

Basic thinking was along the lines of that the back up never gets transferred in except if the original keeper gets injured/sent off. So if sent off you would avoid the minus points. Possibly even get a penalty save.

Does anyone remember what the his conclusion was? As this is the first time I am planning to go down the 2 keepers from one club route.

Ryan could come off after 60 mins with a CS injured or could get sent off at 29 minutes and concede a penalty that Button saves. Don't think you can really account for that with any expected probability. Both as unlikely as each other.

True. So as far as I can tell it would therefore make sense to always play the back up. No down side. Of course if he came on after a red card he would be a player down. But any goals let in would still affect the original keepers points anyway.

Can goalkeepers still be sent off for bringing down the last man? Think they adjusted the rule so it is only a yellow card now. If so I guess this makes a keeper red card more unlikely. In terms of an injury, I don't know, and am speculating here, if an injury is more likely in the first half due to not being fully warmed up then yes I guess there is a case for starting the second choice.

I'm struggling to see how to improve this squad, I've 2m ITB to upgrade Son to Bruno and then the inevitable upgrade of Soucek or Mitro if one of them doesn't work out but for me their value is too good not to start with. I think Soucek will outscore most if not all of the 5.5 mids and same with Mitro and the 6.5 forwards.
