What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

It turns out ‘Upside Chasing’ is in vogue these days – but how does it work and how can it help you to Fantasy Premier League success in 2020/21?

As a proponent of this strategy, I thought it would be a good idea to address this buzz-word and, at the same time, look at some of the numbers behind how it works.

It is a style of play that underpinned a successful 2019/20 campaign for me and there’s no reason why you can’t use a similar approach this time around.

So… how does it work? Let’s find out.

What is Upside Chasing?

How De Bruyne and Sterling compare as FPL assets for 2020/21?

When you’re faced with tough Fantasy decisions, Upside Chasing is when you pick the option that has the highest ceiling, the best chance of scoring you a massive points haul.

Crucially, Upside Chasing also means recalibrating your mind in terms of what you perceive to be a “high risk” move.

If there is merit in choosing a less popular player, that has a higher ceiling, backed up by eye-test and data, the only reason that choice could be a risk is if you were to pay attention to ownership and, to a certain extent, value (which we’ll talk about later).

Now, there is nothing wrong with paying attention to these factors. I certainly don’t ignore them completely but I would rather play FPL based on what I see on the football pitch and in the Members Area. If I started allowing myself to be mostly led by ownership percentages, I would take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror, I can tell you now.

I’m not saying that playing the percentage game is wrong; I do a fair bit of it. But you should not be scared of the ownership to the extent that it makes you act against your instinct when they are watching a game, catching some highlights on Match of the Day or executing a deep dive into the FFS Members Area

Simply put, Upside Chasing is about making sure I’m doing the fun (and right) thing rather than letting others dictate my game.

How did I implement Upside Chasing in 2019/20?

Knowing how Upside Chasing works is one thing. Understanding how to put it into practice on specific decisions is something else entirely.

Those of you who read this article last year will know how the performance of top players often varies depending on who the opponent is. Tracking this across a season is the key to understanding the part fixtures play in Upside Chasing.

I noticed early last season that there were a lot of big hitters and I couldn’t own all of them at the same time. This would lead to a high variance in points between Gameweeks.

I also noted that there were a lot of glue guys (set-and-forget options) in my team, primarily in the low to mid-price bracket and I held them for long parts of the season without spending transfers there. This was most of my defence and players like Raúl Jiménez (£8.5m) who just kept on delivering.

I loosely assumed that spending transfers in defence would lead to a net 15 to 20 point profit or loss over five to six Gameweeks.

I could attempt to make the same gain in a single Gameweek with high-impact big-hitter switching for captaincies primarily based on fixtures. This impact was even greater when the person I was captaining had low ownership.

This constant big-hitter switching based on fixtures is a risky strategy and you need to compromise on value for these players as well as not being afraid of ownership while doing the same.

It also a fair assumption to make that some players are not set-and-forget assets and will not maintain consistent form throughout the season as we saw with Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) during his first Liverpool campaign.

If that is the case, and you see a big hitter showcasing that kind of form throughout the season, you don’t need to move him.

Loosely put, this was the largely the thinking implemented last season but there are a lot more moving parts to it.

You don’t look at this as a hard and fast rule and should remain reactive to all the curve balls that FPL throws at you.

In fact, I might not even implement Upside Chasing this season as I strongly believe in having no rules or pre-conceived notions… although it is in my DNA, more often than not, to pick the high-ceiling option.

I realised while talking to Walsh on an FML FPL podcast appearance that it subconsciously stems from years of playing monthly FPL competitions where I used to take multiple hits at the end of the month and I got very used to having an ideal team on paper.

Anyway, enough subjective jabber for now. Let’s dive into the juicy numbers which may or may not validate the thinking behind big-hitter switching for the Upside Chasing theory. This section is for FFS Premium Members only.

    Another excellent article Lateriser!

I've been minimising the tinkering the last week or so as it tends to do your head in when there is nothing actually changing! That said, I am starting to see some clear (and varied!) options emerging outside my GW1 core - would appreciate the wisdom of the crowd!

    A) (Taylor), Son, JWP, (Davis) - enough cash itb to bring in KDB/ Sterling + Bruno over next couple
    B) (Taylor), (Bruno), Armstrong, (Davis) - bench Bruno GW1, forced to play Ferguson or Davis in GW1
    C) VVD, Armstrong/ JWP, (Greenwood), (Davis) - bench Greenwood GW1 - no Bruno
    D) Davies, ASM, JWP, Jimi - Cash spread around value picks more. Less of a clear plan to get in Utd without a hit or losing Werner for Martial

    McCarthy, Nyland
    TAA, Doherty, XXXX, Justin, Ferguson
    Salah, Auba, XXXX, XXXX, Soucek
    Werner, Mitro, XXXX

Cheers all and sorry I've been contributing a bit less than normal - work has annoyingly started picking up!

Hi mate! Hope you are well.

A of those. I’m still unsure on that strike force of Mitro and Werner. Could be great, could be a huge flop. And Son is very hit and miss.

B you might not get 11 out in GW1.

C I don’t really like Greenwood (much prefer Bruno or Martial)

      D looks a headache

        Nice to "see" you matey!

Mitro, Werner could definitely flop of course but I think both are worth trying out as I think they could be a great source of points if jumped on early or, at worst, good price points to switch out to alternatives.

I'm not a massive Son FPL fan tbh myself which is why he's only in 1 option! It's more about the fixtures and seeing if he starts on a high!

I do like the idea of having Bruno sorted already in B though but it would definitely mean starting on a handicap!

D is a very typical of me headache team! I do like the look of it on paper but it would be the opposite of Lateriser's approach of big hitter upside chasing

Transfer plan (which may not be followed) is Salah to Bruno week 2, Auba to KDB week 3 and then use the spare £2m to upgrade a £4.5m defender to Van Dijk if still possible or Laporte

Which forward do you prefer around 6-6,5?
    Antonio not with good fixtures,
Wood not playing the first game. Iheanacho maybe as a punt before moving to Wood?
    Adams maybe?

I actually had Alli in but considering Lo Celso is playing in attack and Alli injury ridden, decided to change it up.

If only Alli can rediscover his form and stay fit. At 8 would be one of the best players to own.

Idk if you watched the last few games that Everton played but they were so poor conceded a lot of chances, and Southampton play attacking football which leaves space in behind which Son can thrive on

Everton were on the beach. With a couple of new midfielders, I think they’ll improve and get back to that pre-lockdown form.

            Southampton’s last six home games…

            Southampton 3-1 Sheffield United
            Southampton 1-1 Brighton
            Southampton 1-0 Manchester City
            Southampton 0-2 Arsenal
            Southampton 0-1 Newcastle United
            Southampton 2-0 Aston Villa

… and Spurs' last six away games.

            Crystal Palace 1-1 Spurs
            Newcastle United 1-3 Spurs
            Bournemouth 0-0 Spurs
            Sheffield United 3-1 Spurs
            Burnley 1-1 Spurs
            Chelsea 2-1 Spurs

It doesn’t scream goals, does it?

Also, how many shots in the box did Son have over those four, away post restart matches? Pretty sure it was two.

Morning Chaps, my first draft and trying to differ (slightly) for GW1.

      Schmeichel (Johnstone)

      TAA - KWP - Tierney (Justin/Ferguson)

      Saint-Maxim - Aubameyang - Mane - Alli - Traore

      Jiménez - Mitrovic (Brewster)

      1mil ITB

(Brewster has been picked purely on the loan idea)

I’m keen to monitor preseason games and signings however I honestly believe, albeit a hard/scary tactic when trying to implement, that this season the focus has to be midfield. I would love to look at Werner for example however am scared he will be rotated. I fear rotation with the teams in Europe and that’s why I’ve doubled up on Wolves attack. I think they will be the team to watch again this season.

Hard for me to leave Utd players out but GW1 has put me in that position and need to think with my head and not my heart. Tierney - AWB could be my first transfer.

I’ve always picked Salah over Mane but believe Mané could flourish this season.

I’m also keen to see if Fraser Forster returns and his value.

      Any advice/tips/chat/constructive criticism welcome.

      Cheers all, enjoy your day.

Alli over Son and Mane over Salah are just unneccesary risks imo. Both have been outscored by the other option. Price point of view i'd only pick one of your mid priced mids and get one more premium def (Doherty).

Cheers PP. I appreciate your feedback. I do feel however that Alli can perform well this season and is a cheaper option to Son. I’ve seen many comments stating Son performs better when Kane is not playing.

Mane vs Salah was my toughest call. I did have Salah in befitting submitting the team here but will he always outperform Mané?

And defence to me does feel slightly weak but I feel the midfield counterbalances this if I aim to play the 3-5-2.

I was close to picking Patricio in goal also.

I’m finding this year very tough to pick.

I usually swich to 5 mids when i have say 101-101.5m team value. Feeli like 4 at the back is good for start of the season with only 100m to work with. Mane and Salah will score similar, but i prefer to captain a player playing at home and Salah performs better at Anfield.

Maybe we should look back on our GW1 teams from last year to see what we screwed up on and what we wish we had done.

So here's what I had GW1 last year.

      Pope Button
      TAA VvD Digne Rico Lundstram
      Salah Sterling KdB Barkley Perez
      King Wesley Greenwood

Getting Salah, Sterling, KdB was great. Heavy defense worked decently in GW1 but then sort of fell off because Pool couldn't keep clean sheets. I got rid of VvD in GW3 for Soyuncu to free up funds. This is leading me to put less money in defense to start the season.

Barkley, Perez, King and Wesley were all duds basically. Thinking was... Barkley had a good preseason. I tipped him to start and score. He got hauled off on 57 mins in the first game then was an unused sub in the 2nd while Mount (also started at 6.0m) played both and basically was the better pick. Could that mistake repeat itself? Could we all be buying Ziyech when in actuality, Mount at 7.0 is actually the better pick?

Perez was a dud. He blanked 4 games in a row and lost 0.2m in value before I could move him on. He didn't have great fixtures though. No idea why I wanted him to start the season. I guess the appeal was that he'd play as second striker to Vardy at 6.5m but he took time to gel.

King had two great first fixtures. He blanked in the first and scored a pen in the 2nd. But compared to Pukki who scored 4 in the first 2 games, he wasn't great. Moved him on fairly early for Pukki. There are actually quite a lot of decent forwards that could come hot at the 6.5m and 6.0m mark. Yet all I see is Mitrovic. McBurnie, Maupay, Wood, Adams, Kean could all suddenly light up. Which leads to...

Wesley. I wanted a promoted team's forward and figured Villa with all their heavy spending would be best. He cost 6.0m and scored in the 3rd week. Wasn't a disaster for me, but clearly there were better options. Mitro is the same sort of spot except he's a bit more proven, has pens and good fixtures.

I admit that last year's GW1 team was one of the best I've put together. I didn't miss KdB and started with TAA and Pope. I was 8K OR after GW3 and it was the highest I ever got lol. But still, interesting learnings. Perhaps we are not as prepared for the budget forward onslaught as we might be. Last year, Barnes, Pukki and Abraham became the template pretty quickly and then it sort of fell apart just as fast.

Great article - my lessons from my GW1 team last year are don't take too many punts. Go with the tired and tested, proven players, with price points to move easily to emerging players.

I am going to start with Kane, who I can easily move to Werner.

I just don't feel confident at the moment that I will make the right choice on Chelsea assets - with Liv in GW2 too I am happy to wait to bring them in.

Other example would be punting on a Leeds defender vs just picking Taylor from Burnley. Happy to go with Taylor for now knowing the way Burnley play - if Dallas becomes the next Doherty/Stevens and posts good attacking stats and Leeds look tight at the back again this is an easy move.

Comparing the Barkley situation is quite the stretch... Ziyech is an outstanding creator who has proved himself on an European stage. He will also be playing as part of the front three and on set pieces. Whereas Mount may not even play, and when he does he'll be further away from the attack at CM. I'm confident Ziyech will be well worth the 8M, and even tip him to be this years 9.5 KDB.

It is a bit of a stretch. But Barkley was very hot in pre-season and looked favored over Mount.

I think Mount may still be a great option. He's a Lampard favorite, still takes the odd set piece and will most likely start until Pulisic is back at least. Even then, he might just play in CM a bit deeper. 7.0m is not a huge price to pay especially when he is playing in a more creative side.

        Interesting

Mid price punts aren't worth it. One, two max are okay, but ASM, Armstrong AND Soucek. That could be a lot of clearing up to do

and here's just some of the bandwagons that subsequently failed:

              Pukki, Yarmolenko, Mount, Abraham, Haller

Often, less is more in FPL

Great post Camzy, it’s something I only looked at last week.

        FWIW, I started with…

        Henderson (Button)
        Alexander-Arnold, Laporte, Montoya, Robertson (Lundstram)
Perez, Salah, David Silva, Sterling (Dendoncker)
        Jota, Wilson (Greenwood)

Failing to get De Bruyne from the off probably wasn’t the best decision, though I should point out David Silva pretty much matched him over the opening weeks, but it’s why I’m pretty set on Werner. I can only see his price going in one direction once the season starts.

This season, I’ll go a little lighter at the back too, but it certainly hasn’t put me off investing in promoted players, Henderson and Lundstram were great picks.

Yeah, possibly, he started well, but I was pretty happy with my City assets at the time, and if I remember rightly, Aguero didn't do much at all for ages following GW6.

            GW1 – Laporte 6, Sterling 20, Silva 3
            GW2 – Laporte 1, Sterling 6, Silva 1
            GW3 – Laporte 2, Sterling 16 (c), Silva 10
            GW4 – Laporte 0i, Sterling 6 (c), Silva 10
            GW5 – Otamendi 1, Sterling 2, Silva 1
            GW6 – Otamendi 15, Sterling missed out, Silva 11

Seems a pretty reasonable draft. Heavy at the back was popular last season to start and I'm seeing quite a few drafts with TAA VvD Doherty this year as well.

Didn't you find that it was really hard to move funds to get KdB? That's my concern right now is making sure I can get players that could begin huge bandwagons

Here are the guys I think might explode:
          Son
          Ziyech
          Werner
          Greenwood
          Martial
          Foden
          Pulisic
          Antonio
          Adams

The really expensive premos like KdB or Sterling are a bit tough to reach and unlikely to shoot up by like 0.3m in 2 weeks like some of the above guys can.

Realistically, how many of these high-end guys can you own at the same time? If you stick with Kev and Bruno, you're looking at one of the strikers, and maybe a sub-8m midfielder or striker.
That's why I like Lateriser's strategy of hopping on and off the week's flat-track bully captaincy option.

pretty good, though I prefer aurier (if he stays) to Davies to an extent that I'd be prepared to make sacrifices elsewhere... is he affordable? I'd say it might be worth downgrading one of your keepers to a 4.0 if not?

      McCarthy Button
      TAA KWP Justin Dallas Ferguson
      Aubameyang Salah Son Ziyech ASM

Obviously keeping an eye on bringing in KDB/Bruno/Rashford after GW1. Ziyech is a bit of a punt but I think at 8.0 there is a lot of value in an attacking team.

It's a very good team overall.

Not much I can recommend to improve it. Wait and see on the 4.5ms based on who's looking likely to start. Based on raw potential:

        Vinagre
        Saliba
        Justin
        Ayling
        Dallas
        KWP
        Taylor

Would be the order I would want them provided they start.

Little to critique upfront or in midfield. It's preference there. I prefer Fernandes over Auba so will have him on the bench GW1 ready to go for GW2. But I totally understand going Auba.
