Can we trust Spurs’ FPL defenders with appealing fixtures this season?

Fantasy Premier League managers are considering Spurs defenders ahead of the new season… but can they be trusted? That’s what I am here to find out.

When the 2020/21 fixtures were released there was a sudden spike in managers interested in the Spurs backline. These sorts of options have not been particularly popular in recent seasons, but some of them may well have come into the new campaign at just the right prices.

With a similar group of players to Jose Mourinho’s squad, Spurs kept 13 clean sheets in 2018/19, conceding 38 goals, the fifth-best in the league.

Before that, they finished fourth overall for clean sheets and letting in just 36 goals in 2017/18.

And few managers will forget the 2016/17 campaign when Spurs ended up joint-top for clean sheets with Manchester United (17) as they let in only 26 goals across the season.

If they can rediscover this sort of form with their appealing fixtures at the start of 2020/21, we could find some exciting value options in defence.

But the question is… can they deliver on that kind schedule? To find out, I looked at some of the underlying numbers from last season.

Has there been any Leicester preseason action yet?

I have an unfashionable interest in their attack. Contemplating a mid or Vardy.

        Ty

Sort of half-contemplating Tielemans just to get money into midfield and not attack. Probably won't work this way of course but done optimally he could reach Pulisic when premiums are switched,

It depends rather how many transfers you are already booking in for weeks 2-3 imo

I'm holding off Werner until he's had Liverpool fixture - that one couldn't be worse really. It's now not just an all new attack but an all new side pretty much at Chelsea. Big ask to make that gel immediately. Also noting that both Brighton and WBA are away.

Vardy (and Kane for that matter) have a great start and allow an easy downgrade if Werner looks hot after week 3.

Would need 2-3 transfers to get in united and city attack. By gw3 would get a better idea of the chelsea assets. In case werner looks essential then wc could be an option as well. Cheers.

Word is that Mourinho is learning Korean so he can communicate with Son better. That's some crazy dedication. Can't wait to watch the All or Nothing doc and invest in Spurs accordingly.

Sounds like some self agrandising crap that Jose would make up. Son's English is fine.
      Doco could be great though.

Son's -- or Jose's -- English, no matter how accomplished, cannot account for the subtle shades of difference that come from conversing with someone in their mother tongue.

Can see huge advantages for Jose to be learning conversational Korean. Being the polyglot he is, it would actually be quite painless.

Son speaks English and German well and although Jose speaks half a dozen languages well, none of them are at all related to Korean so can't see Jose being able to get much further than "I like kimchi" or "Where is the station" before he is sacked though

The point is that Korean is markedly easier to learn than Romance or Germanic languages...

Really? How come? I'd say Korean is exceptionally difficult for speakers of romance or Germanic languages to learn from scratch although Hangul is easy to learn. Maybe if Jose already has a good level of Japanese he won't find it too hard.

There hasn't been a Messi thread for ... oooh... minutes, so let me make a DIFFERENT point!

Messi at City - opponents will gang up in 3s and 4s to crowd him out. That will leave your KDBs, Fodens, Sterlings insane amounts of time and space. I'd be loading up on them to kill their personal FPL bests, not Leo.

    1. Camzy

If Messi is 14m or higher I will avoid him at the start.

I don't think he's worth 2.5m more than KdB or Sterling. Both of those guys increase in value if you put Messi in because he's also an elite assister.

KdB becomes essential imo with Messi in the team and then depending how crazy Messi scores, you think about doubling.

Teams in La Liga or Europe have been doing the same for more than a decade now, still manages to find space and has insane stats (if they matter).. His price will be the key imo and it is actually really tricky to price him "correctly" if he joins City that is

Also, on the topic of "can we trust Spurs FPL defenders" - absolutely, yes. Mourinho is the defensive master and his second season is absolutely legendary with his teams always starting strong, it happened in 14/15 and 17/18. There was a lot of progress during the restart, Sheffield United game aside which seems like it was a real outlier. 4 CS in 8 matches, the goals they conceded were: penalty to United, 3 to Sheff U, wondergoal from Lacazette due to poor marking from Winks and a mistake from Aurier, Matt Ritchie wondergoal from Aurier mistake, set piece to Palace. The signing of a strong ball-winner in Hojbjerg will be a big boon for their defense as will the removal of Aurier. Davies/Dier at 5.0 are better than any of the 4.5 options besides Vinagre and Doherty at 6.0 could work out. I know I'll be going with at least 1 Spurs defender, I expect at least 6 CS in the first 10.

I really dislike Mourinho, but I know of his second-season syndrome, and he is getting the purchases he wants so there'll be no sulking. It does look like defensive solidity won't kill creativity too.

    3. pingissimus

The wrinkle with Spurs is the Europa programme - they'll be doubling up early on consistently.

Wolves drew 1-1 just about every time after EL last season - can see that happening again.

      1. Flair
        • 3 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Wolves were playing in European competition for the first time in like 40 years. It's a common trend for teams not used to Europe to struggle early when they're in it - Leicester 15/16, Everton 14/15, Wolves 19/20 like you said. Whereas Spurs are accustomed to European football week in, week out, they'll be fine.

Keep in mind ive already booked two transfers for gw2 and gw3 (getting in Martial and KDB)

Dont want another transfer waiting to happen which Justin could be when Pereira returns in October

With no Evans Pereira and Chilwell for Leicester i dont even see the appeal of Justin. Both are similar in terms of clean sheet potential

            Kane scored didnt he ?

then again fatigue would be an issue for spurs and kane last gw last season after playing a lot in small time period.with little changes

After a break this time round Ings will be more fresh than Kane come september 12 😉

Big haul is what you said mate 🙂

Why would tiredness affect Spurs more than Palace? No sense there Im afraid. Palace weren't able to field a full bench for the last few weeks.

Teasing here of course but Selhurst is a traditional goal graveyard and the Palace injury crisis perhaps overstated for those that know. Ings a fair call but a tight scoreline most likely imo

I want both Bruno and Martial for GW 2 but only want one on the bench in GW1.
So option 1. = Martial Bench
Salah placeholder for Bruno then move GW2

    Option 2. = Bruno bench
    Ings placeholder for one week
This option gives me 1.5m to strengthen my squad.
So I could even do Davis > Mitrovic and go 3-4-3
or move Justin > 6.0 or Dier to VVD.

In summary it’s Salah v Ings for 1 week but Ings would get a stronger teammate.

That’s not an issue with option 1. Salah > Fernandes is a downgrade.
          Option 2.
It might be wise to go for a 5.5 defender and leave 0.5m itb to allow for this.

I don't like to make swaps in defense. I'm hoping for going with a set N forget Defense. 4/3 atb is something to look. But it'd be 4 most probably.

        Hopefully Doherty stays at Wolves.

            I hear you mate.
I have two spots if 5.5m & 6m attackers in my team. Want to limit that quota of midpriced attackers to 2.

If you want to avoid picking them, avoid the slot altogether...

If you pick a defense that heavy you inevitably have to try and get a few from that tier in order to avoid the Salah, Auba, Fernandes tier player.

      Really

Jonny was a poorish selection both these last two seasons. The returns were all Doherty. Had Jonny over Doherty in 18/19 🙁 ;-( Then got Boly over him last season - much better play even if a losing one

        Not fantasy, real life

Wolves lived through advancing the ball in the wide areas without risking losing possession; something tells me it’s going to drop a level or two; their midfielders aren’t athletic enough to compensate imo; Jimi to be starved for service

Alastair Gold on Doherty, main Spurs journalist and ITK: "He fits the advanced right-back role Mourinho is looking for perfectly, with the LB and CBs a three in possession. The plan for Spurs this summer has been to do the smart deals Mourinho believes will seal gaps in his squad and get the best out of an otherwise talented bunch."

Sounds like Mou likes him and the 3ATB in possession system will get the best out of him. We would prefer him at Wolves as an FPL asset but I wouldn't count him out here! Also means Davies attacking returns went from 1% to 0%, still prefer him to (or with?) Dier as I think he's the tiniest bit more nailed.

This is exactly what we were discussing an hour ago before my internet went down.
Doherty will score well at Spuds; I don't think his points total will be less that if he stays at Wolves. But both Dier and Davies come into play if Aurier's lapses at the back are history. They won't haul, but they should be good for plenty clean sheets in the opening set of fixtures, unless EL intrudes.

      1. Flair
        • 3 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Yep, one of Dier/Davies is nailed for me. It's whether I want Doherty alongside of them that I'm contemplating, I can have him or/and get other Wolves defenders like Vinagre, AMN, right wingback replacement etc. Situation is rather confusing at the moment for Wolves.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years

If someone comes in ahead of Vinny, i will avoid Wolves defence altogether. Right now, Vinny's still in. But the idea of doubling up on Doh+5m Spud - with those fixtures it's a real temptation.

We may not know before GW1 (I'm currently punting on ASM and Armstrong). Point is, as soon as his bandwagon emerges it's an easy 1FT. Soucek would be harder to shift, requiring 2FT.

Quite possibly if it afforded other options elsewhere I wanted. Being a set piece threat for his goals makes him a bit more fixture proof so has to played most weeks to get the value from him. But I do think he could get 130 points across the season which would prove good value in the long run.

Half of the set pieces for Newcastle? Not for me. I guess not many options at 5.0 but without the CS points, he’s a 80-100 pt player

Rumours of the Toon making a £12m bid for Tom Davies as well.

    McCarthy | [Button]
    Vinagre | Justin | Saliba | Mitchell | [BenJohnson]
    Salah | Auba | ASM | [*Greenwood*] | [Bissouma]
    Werner | Ings | Kane

    * For GW1, bench Greenwood and start with 4.0 CRY defender Mitchell (Ferguson if fit) .
    * Planning to bring in TAA only after GW3, due to GW1 fitness concerns and GW2, 3 fixtures.

Way too light on def and bench; just wait 2 weeks and use 2ft to sort Greenwood and whoever else you want

I have no taste for any of them. Gun to head, Mitrovic. Better at 6.5 is Wood.

Thing about Antonio is, if his 4 goals v Norwich are taken out of the equation, would he even be in the discussion?

If you’re prepared to sacrifice a Liverpool premium slot until GW9 - WC territory given fixture swing - which of these look best?

    A Brewster
    B Henderson
    C Keita

I’m getting close to pencilling Hendo in when I do look at team again if he’s fit. He’s best value 5.5 out there and he’s essentially nailed bar rests. Obvs not explosive by any means but I don’t see any reason why steady trickle shouldn’t continue. ASM for example got pretty much all his returns in a 4 match run a la DCL and feels 100% punty

Whoever I put there is a possible swap to bandwagon once week 2/3 Manchester moves happen. But intention is to minimise moves in that slot and go value - treating any transfer there as a minus 4

If he’s on loan then there’s another spot available

I’m looking at a situation where I have only 2 Liverpool week 1 and possibly only 1 at week or so later. Seems reasonable then to see where else they have value

        Koucek 5.0
        Hendo 5.5

        Know which I prefer really

He’s the more attacking one but this is a team where Hendo hasn’t featured yet. Nailedness yet to be seen as his his position when Hendo is fit

Trying to work out Spurs' first team if Doherty signs:

      Lloris
      Doherty Sanchez Alderweireld Davies
      Hojbjerg Lo-Celso
      Bergwijn Alli Son
      Kane

      Hart
      Dier Foyth Tanganga Sessegnon
      Sissoko Ndombele
      Fernandes Winks Lamela
      Moura

Then they sell Rose and Aurier and loan out Carter-Vickers

      A) play Saliba & buy Foden to bench, 4-4-2
      B) play Nketiah & bench Saliba, 3-4-3

Brewster if he goes on loan to a PL club. If he ended up at Newcastle or West Brom, then he’s a complete bargain. We can only hope.

I, like many, have a slot for a 4.5 striker. He'd shoot up to 50% ownership overnight.

Along with Leeds, Villa and Baggies, they don't have a single Premier-level striker, so I'd assume he'd get plenty opportunity.

Hasn’t stopped them from playing mcgildrick and burnie, can’t see him throwing the kid in the deep end, should take him slow unless injury

All pre-season I've had it in mind that my midfield powerhouse and captaincy rotation will be Kev and Bruno. I'm gravitating towards he-who-is-not-mentioned: Raz. KDB & Sterling. Captain Raz for games v bottom half; Kev for games v top-half. A premium striker (start with Kane, so can switch to anyone) and even TAA as alternative captaincy options. Even with the contrasting opening fixtures, I'm inclined to think Raz is more likely to haul over Bruno.

I am not sure about that ANDY. Raz's work rate means he misses the easier games and plays ALL the tough games. Been the trend with Pep last couple of seasons.
