How I’ll try to keep pace with the new smart thinkers in FPL this season

When I returned to Fantasy Football in 2006, a statistics fetish and the quest for one-upmanship over my rival Granville inspired this website and underpinned some high ranks in Fantasy Premier League. I got myself a flying start, an early advantage.

Almost fifteen years later, the pitch has been levelled.

I have to admit, when Fantasy Football Scout became my universe, I buried my head and shut out the social media powered community that grew up around me. I built walls and obsessed about protecting what I had, forgoing likes and subscribers to keep my roof intact.

Now free of those concerns, I was shocked when I reared my head to look around. Both the depth and breadth of the FPL community is extraordinary, the amount of information and data being shared openly overwhelming.

Eight million managers make a high rank that more difficult to achieve, but the explosion of new voices spraying knowledge and opinion far and wide raises the bar with each passing season.

Metrics

Back in the day, I was among a few hundred who wandered trance-like down supermarket isles deliberating a four-point hit. Now there are thousands extending loo breaks to unfeasible lengths of time while they compare Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) for touches in the box. Like myself all those years ago, they have spreadsheets, irritated partners and an insatiable drive to succeed: a triple threat.

I need to raise and change my game if I’m to remain in their company.

Too long in the tooth and arrogant to be told the latest do’s and don’ts or ten tips for success, I know the mechanics of the game and how to bend them to my advantage. To really improve, I need to look hard at myself, analyse my methods and learn from mistakes.

I’ve always hurried away from FPL failure. I’m almost ashamed that dismal Gameweeks spark family tension in garden centres, so why would I ever dwell on every error? I bury mistakes to maintain an equilibrium. Forget that bad transfer, move on, greet the next deadline as a liquor to quickly drown my sorrows.

That changes now. I should see my mistakes as an opportunity to learn more about how I play, to identify my favourite error traps and the bias at play when I run my eye over Match of the Day highlights or Goals Imminent tables.

Thanks to an almost catastrophic campaign in 2019/20, I have plenty to pick apart. I’ve learned to enjoy looking back and attempting to fathom my thought process behind each bad decision. But that’s just a post mortem; I need to attack this new season with this same analytical mindset.

I have to be more inquisitive as each Gameweek rolls by, question and challenge each decision I make and develop methods that reveal a clear choice that I’m happy to take, not just one I’ve convinced myself is correct by brute-forcing fuzzy numbers and rose-tinted eye tests.

You might have noticed that psychology is a popular buzzword right now, an emerging theme in the community that can be conveniently tucked away in a bulging box file labelled “overthinking”.

But I’m convinced that something is afoot. When Magnus Carlsen, the world’s finest Chess player, hits the FPL top 100, we need to stop in our tracks and consider that there could be a new breed among us.

I reckon your average Grandmaster spends more time pondering King to G7, rather than King to centre forward. So I might have the edge on Magnus when it comes to thinking time, I may even have more knowledge and data at my disposal.

But does Magnus employ a logical method to his decisions and keep bias and emotion in check? Does he indulge in bouts of introspection and analysis of his judgement calls? Does he read all those psychology threads on Twitter with a knowing smile?

He’s the best chess player in the world. He does all the above and has a team of advisors doing it for him while he sleeps.

These days everyone can get a glut of knowledge, information and data in their timeline with relative ease. But to work out how best to process it, how you learn to separate luck from skill and focus on improving the input, not dwell on the output, that might just be the new marginal gain. A fresh route to success.

After last season, I’ll give anything a go.

Magnus must be petrified.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Good read Mark! Welcome back 🙂

Could you have a word with the powers that be & see can we (finally) get FPL points added to the comparison tool by any chance please? (How we don’t have this in the comparison tool I’ll never know - why is it so difficult?)

And it would also be fairly neat to be able to see counts of single returns, double returns, treble returns etc - for example if you load up Salah’s last 50 games & see he has 23 blanks & 17 single returns (I.e. 40 of his last 50 games are 8 points or less, with 17 of those being 3 points or less) it puts a very different shine on things to the noise of shots in boxes, XG’s, Touches in boxes & all that wonderful stuff

Plus being able to select non sequential series of gameweeks for comparison is also getting close to essential - for one small example - we need to clearly see Salah’s stats in the gameweeks when Mané starts versus when he doesn’t - we already know his output goes down to about 3 points per game in away matches when Mané starts alongside over a full season of away games - but even I haven’t had the heart to go in & do the manual stitching of 38 gameweeks worth of underlying stats into two groups to see how they look - it feels like we shouldn’t have to brave risking developing carpal tunnel do this stuff manually when paying good coin for yearly memberships)

The abilities to get visibility to these types of analytical insights is how everyone will take their game to the next level imo

I’ve been banging on about this for quite some time & it’s nearly kickoff again! 🙂

I’m Currently thinking William, Barnes or ziyech

      Willian could be interesting.

I suspect you will have Auba for those first 2 weeks, though, so Barnes might be a good differential to have.

I've heard much worse ideas but it's not very flexible - say, if you wanted Werner or Kane

It depends slightly what you do in midfield. There’s a maximum of 2 mill in Mo Auba to KdB Bruno. Just 1 mill from midfield deals gives you a fair amount of latitude

True. Could work very well in a safe & balanced approach (such as 4-4-2) to give a solid platform for the first few weeks.

You can keep money ITB to allow for this.

In reality, though, if they both score pretty much what they did last season I can't see Kane and Werner scoring enough points more than them to make it a mistake not to upgrade to those two instead.

Jimi ticks along nicely and Ings was Saints main route to goal, so they rack up enough points to let you let your premium Mids get on with the main points scoring.

One or the other if I go 343, both, maybe Armstrong if 352

5.0m for Soucek isn’t bad as it allows your budget to be concentrated on premiums, just unsure about WHU fixtures

With that price bracket, you know what you’re getting so getting the right premiums is important ... that’s the difficult part ha

I feel he could to well, Europa league may be a big factor though. Aurier had licence to get forward a lot so why not Doherty, he has a knack for getting into good positions and there opening fixtures are plumb. If they tighten up at the back, and I think they did a bit at the end of the season he could do very well.

    Mark,

2006/7 was also my first season paying official FPL, although had played fantasy football for years previously.

I do miss the old days and ways of FFS and I remember your 'Mark created the beast, now he's trying to tame it' strapline which was spot on....

....but you can't. FFS is a runaway juggernaut that keeps gaining momentum and will grow and grow. Even as the creator you can do no more than hang on tight and enjoy the ride.

It's certainly a more enjoyable ride with you on board fella, and the preamble has made my day. I feel 'understood' again and its good to know there are others out there sharing the ups and downs.

    Welcome back pal!

Nice comment. It has become a juggernaut now. I still think there's room for players who don't want to get too far into statistical analysis, comparative tools, etc.

Mitchell or Johnson as 4.0m bench fodder ?

Currently on Mitchell but the more I think about it, Johnson has better value in the long term. Palace fixtures get better GW5 , but Idk how nailed on Mitchell will still be by then , whereas Johnson I think will likely be nailed despite bad fixtures till GW7 ...

    Anyone with better insight ?

Depends on price. May have to be Auba to Messi instead of KDB, if he is a mid. If he is a striker then a wildcard. If he joins before the season starts then complete rebuild!

Great to have a little structure back to the week with Marks musings. Fpl is possibly a great release for the chess champion compared to the stress of defending his crown. I'm sure like us all, he spends an unfeasible amount of time thinking of his fpl team and the gws ahead. I just imagine he's got the balance right and doesn't overthink it, and I like how he has favourite players like Mo who he depends on and bring him joy. My own approach will be to pick the scraps from the top table (marginal gains like Lundy last season) and slip under the radar. I'm sure Mark will have a cracking season again as the groundswell of good feeling on this site drive him towards the top 1k.
