Can Doherty continue to offer FPL points potential at Spurs?

Fantasy Premier League managers have already begun debating whether Matt Doherty‘s (£6.0m) move to Spurs makes him a better or worse asset.

We have compared the former Wolves man with the options already on offer in north London, with some further assessment of his clean sheet potential too.

Fantasy Football Scout user Sully29 neatly outlined the dilemma facing FPL managers:

The issue isn’t whether he will be attacking, it’s whether he’ll be able to attack in the same way he does at Wolves. Because if he doesn’t then his price becomes a problem.

– Community Member, Sully29

This article will examine not only the differences between Doherty and Serge Aurier (£5.5m) but also how Jose Mourinho has used full-backs previously in his career.

It will touch on the defensive progress Spurs have made under their new coach – as highlighted recently by Pro Pundit Sam Bonfield – and help FPL managers decide if the new signing should be included in their 15-man squads.

Advanced Right-Back

A key feature of how Tottenham Hotspur set-up under Mourinho is the use of an advanced right-back.

So quite a common strategy to have Bruno/Greenwood on the bench reward for GW2, anyone doing the same tactic but with Grealish?

No each to their own, the right time to WC is different for every team. I guess the negative connotation to wildcarding that early is that you have spent much time building that GW1 team, so there will be some inevitable return on your investment in due course (assuming you picked a decent side), which you’re then ripping up via a WC.
Having said, the blank in GW1 I guess creates a reasoning for it.

My head has been turned by Grealish. I feel like he has a better change of putting 20+ points on his last year total than mitro does at Fulham. He is at the least a compatible option. But at his price point I think I'd be looking at getting in and benching.

      It's a call. For sure

For all this spurs chat. I really don’t think their early season is that great.

Everton will be much better this season. On the beach post lockdown and look to be doing some good business.

Saints look really dangerous as well.

Then a favourable game v Newcastle. Hard to know what they’ll be like though.

    Could easily be:
    1-1
    2-1 (either way)
    2-0

Seem lots of better options elsewhere until we see how spurs settle

I’d say Leicester, Chelsea and Arsenal much better for first couple games or to have united / city assets benched then playing.

I’m sure I’ll get spurs at some point and strongly leaning international break WC. But not to start

Fair enough back at you. Fully expect mourinho to come out swinging. For all his reputation, it's not homogeneous across a season. Mourinho teams DO hit big. They just don't stay that way. Can easily see a continuation of form and 5-10 goals in 3 games. Decision for me is 2, or 3 players

Everton? Time to get them is gw 4ish they seem seem like a team that needs to settle. Young players like Braithwaithe and Gordon plus Sigurdsson a fading force?

Spurs side in contrast could not be more settled same players in squad for years. Plus team is being slowly Jose'ed Hojberg and Doherty clearly show his plan - power - football intelligence - pace.

He will be heavily rotated on the left wing, unfortunately due to recent injuries and age creeping up he makes the most impact coming on for the last 30 minutes of games, on the flip side IF he starts he rarely sees is past 60 mins. He can be absolutely explosive when playing though and by far one of our best attackers, just not viable FPL wise really

Dier rarely takes free kicks, and is not really that dangerous with them. As a spurs fan I'm not sure who are starting CBs are going to be, but I'm fairly certain that Davies will be our starting LB. I would go for Davies.

Yeh I prefer the balance of B really. But it would make getting Martial very tricky....and I think he's the best of the United bunch?

      Doherty, Davies or Dier?

Dier (Davies will rotate some games, and Doherty will not bring same amount pts, as he could in Wolves)

Davies won't rotate, Mourinho doesn't move around his trusted players. Sess won't take his position because he can't play the third CB role Jose has his LB play.

The obvious fact that he clearly rates him highly and he's played every single game, offering consistent defending and few mistakes. I recommend actually paying attention to Spurs instead of coming here with dreadful takes.

A bit of a different draft:

      McCarthy
      TAA - VvD - Lascelles - Justin
      Auba - Alli - Son - Soucek
      Werner - Adams

      Steer, Brewster, Mitchell, Bruno

        Better 4.5s than Lascelles

GLC played in Dele's position at end of last season...

If he plays there Dele doesnt get in does he....

If Jose plays 4231 which I think he will, GLC & Hojbjerg are certain starters. The final spot is Ndombele vs Winks vs Dele. If we keep Ndombele, he will start imo

Reconsidering Kane now... first four fixtures aren't great.

Everton - Managed by Ancelotti, very low scoring game.

Southampton - Decent but they seem like the 'Dark Horse'

Newcastle - Great unless Brucey brings back the 5-4-1

      United - Tough

Next 4 are great, West Ham-Burnley-West Brom-Brighton. I wonder if it's feasible to bring him in then and not before, but I reckon I'm overcomplicating it.

My opinion is that you are. He's in good short term form, had a brief break. He's fit, he's scoring. He's got fairly favourable fixtures. The team is fairly settled. Doherty should improve them. Kane seems a solid pick

"Until Doherty went to spurs nobody wanted spurs defence"
Complete rubbish. There has been plenty talk of Davies v Dier on here for weeks.

"You didn’t seeing Aurier or dier in anyone’s team"
Wrong with Dier , nobody wanted Aurier because most knew that he was on his bike.

"I don’t think Doherty strengthens them defensively"
          Tend to agree.

"I don’t understand the sudden essential status of spurs defence"
Wrong. Don't remember seeing a post stating that Spurs defence is essential. Maybe beneficial.

1 out of 4 . Please try harder.

Yes noticed that - it was early in his reign though. Think he didn't trust his defence to sit back and hold a lead for 45 mins. We did sit back after taking lead in games after lockdown probably after having a slight 'preseason' under Jose

There are going to be so many transfers for utd and city mids after the first deadline, that whoever out of the 12mil mids doesn't perform is bound to immediately drop in value.

I hope all you team-value-hunters are aware of this. Would be safer to start with a team of 3x utd, 3x city and nick pope

I think this might get tempered by wildcards

I see double Liverpool defence has become popular in RMTs 😉

That’s what I came up with for now.

          McCarthy - 4.0
          TAA - Vinagre - Justin - Pieters - Mitchell
          Salah - Auba - Alli - JWP - 4.5
          Werner - Richarlison - Adams

          Thoughts..?

Weak at the back and not keen on Richarlison. There's my thoughts.

Alli could be good but not nailed

            Like the front 3

Not sure on double Saints attack - JWP to maybe Pereira?

            Get Spurs defence in there

            I prefer Dallas to Pieters

          McCarthy Steer
          Trent Lamptey KWP Vinagre Dallas
          Salah Auba ASM Son Soúcek
          Ings Werner Brewster.

            Don't like double Saints defence.

Lamptey not good fixtures - prefer Justin

            Strong midfield and nice attack
