Can Thiago Silva improve Chelsea’s defence and become a viable FPL asset?

Thiago Silva (£5.5m) looks set to transform Chelsea’s defensive capabilities after completing a move from Paris Saint Germain.

Frank Lampard’s new-look squad is already shaping up to be much-improved from the side that showed so much promise last season – and now they have a sorely needed defensive leader in the ranks.

We have assessed the centre-back’s ability and compared him against his new colleagues to see what impact he will have on Fantasy Premier League in 2020/21…

The History and Statistics

Thiago Silva arrives at Chelsea regarded as one of the greatest central defenders of the last decade.

Between 2012 and 2020, the Brazilian won seven Ligue 1 titles with PSG, as well as five French Cups and six French League Cups, having also won Serie A and the Italian Super Cup with AC Milan before that.

The serial-winning nature of the PSG squad over that time has been heavily influenced by Silva’s stabling presence at the back.

The centre-back is internationally renowned for his ability to read the game well, possessing the pace to patrol his defensive area effortlessly. Very much in the mould of Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), Silva is the calming influence on those around him, retaining his composure in even the most high-pressure situations.

Because he anticipates danger so well, he rarely ends up in situations that require desperate measures, which is why in nine Champions League games last season, he committed just four fouls.

Perhaps the best way to highlight his importance to any team is his role in Brazil’s infamous World Cup 2014 campaign. The host nation marched all the way to the semi-finals of the competition – but had to play that crucial match without Silva, due to a yellow-card suspension.

In the absence of their defensive rock, Brazil were completely blown away, thrashed 7-1 by a ruthless Germany side in one of the most humiliating results in World Cup history.

In short, Silva theoretically has the ability to transform any team from a defensive shambles to a tight and organised unit.

A key man for PSG over the last eight years, he has operated at a high level in the Champions League too. Although he has never won the tournament, Silva has made a minimum of seven appearances on the continent, in six of the last eight campaigns, taking his team to the final last season.

“With Thiago Silva, we are looking at a player I know very well, pretty much as we all do. He brings great experience for us, he is still playing at a massively high level, as we saw in the Champions League final and games towards the final, so I expect him to come and bring that, bring his experience, leadership and his qualities. It is going to be very important for us.” – Frank Lampard

Such experience in the Champions League means Silva also has plenty of experience playing against English clubs, which could prove key ahead of a move to the Premier League.

He has faced Chelsea six times in his career, losing just one of those meetings. Even when his PSG side were famously beaten at the death by Manchester United in 2018/19, Silva had spent much of the game as one of the best players on the pitch. He dominated that outing with his exceptional passing abilities, another feature of his stabling influence on any team. Incredibly, over the last seasons, the centre-back has ranked second-best among all PSG players for completed passes.

With these skills, Silva helps his teams command the lion’s share of possession and his composure on the ball is another reason why patrolling his defensive areas are often so comfortable for him. Anyone who watched the recent Champions League final will have noticed how well the Brazilian coped with Bayern Munich’s high press.

Silva also does offer some aerial threat at set-pieces but he does not necessarily come to this country as a prolific scorer of goals. In eight years at PSG, he found the net in nine league games.

The Prospects

It is clear that Silva will have a massive impact on Chelsea’s clean sheet potential for the new season.

As you can see from the table above, his percentage of tackles won in 2019/20 was significantly higher than anyone else who played centre-back for Chelsea last season.

Meanwhile, only Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) bested the Brazilian for the ratio of aerial duels won and minutes per clearance.

The former Everton loanee was also further ahead for minutes per interception, while Fikayo Tomori (£5.0m) and Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) were marginally better than Silva for this statistic.

However, the former PSG man comes to Chelsea having registered a better figure for minutes per block than any of his new colleagues managed last season.

Considering that PSG dominated Ligue 1 once again in 2019/20, finishing 12 points ahead of Marseille and conceding just 24 goals in 27, the fact that Silva offered such a favourable comparison with Chelsea defenders says a lot about how much of a contribution he can make in the Premier League.

While PSG let in an average of 0.9 goals per game in Ligue 1 last year, the Blues average goals conceded per game was 1.42. Plenty of work for Silva to get stuck into, then.

However, we should point out that until Lampard solves his goalkeeper problem, Silva’s presence may only go so far. After all, Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.0m) had the Premier League’s worst expected Goals Prevented score of any shot-stopper last season.

It also looks as if he can help Chelsea’s defensive prospects from a possession perspective as well. Not only will he likely increase the team’s ability to produce Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBIs), but Silva will likely improve their command of the ball.

In an admittedly easier league, he registered a pass completion rate of 95.5% in 2019/20, higher than anyone else in Chelsea’s squad who played more than once last season. That mantle fell to Christensen, who completed 91% of his passes.

This ability, while also residually increasing the chances of a Chelsea clean sheet, could also be important for Silva when it comes to accruing bonus points.

Perhaps the only question hanging over Silva in terms of his own FPL appeal, is how often he will start games. At 35 years of age, he is certainly in the closing stages of his career, nor is he expected to stay at Chelsea for a long-term period.

Could that see Lampard use the veteran defender sparingly, especially considering the number of fronts Chelsea will be competing on this season?

Well, the 2019/20 campaign certainly demonstrated that Silva still has the legs and longevity to persistently perform at the highest level, considering he made nine Champions League appearances for PSG.

Among his colleagues, only Presnel Kimpembe and Juan Bernat (10 each) played more times in the competition.

Silva did play slightly fewer Ligue 1 matches, appearing in 21 and starting 20, but this was not due to rotation. He only missed some league action due to a groin injury in January and hamstring problem in February.

One other element not considered thus far is the impact Sila will have on those around him. Bringing a vastly experienced central defender, who leads by example and has won plenty of silverware, is exactly what Chelsea need in their young defence right now.

As a result, the other centre-backs in Lampard’s rapidly developing squad should, in theory, improve after spending time with Silva.

“We have a relatively young squad, we saw that last year, there were games afterwards when I was probably asking for more voice and some more leadership in different ways and he brings that naturally straight away, and also on the pitch he can help talk and be the player that he is which means affecting others. On those levels, I hope he brings that. I am pretty sure he will with the qualities we know he has, so I am excited for when he joins up.” – Frank Lampard

Following on from that, Silva’s arrival should also improve the FPL points potential of Chelsea defenders, as well as offering some clean sheets of his own.

With the Brazilian rooted at the heart of the back-four, Fantasy managers are now more likely to look to Ben Chilwell (£5.5m) and Reece James (£5.0m) in the hope they can nail down starting berths at full-back, although Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) and Marcos Alonso (£6.0m) are likely to cause complications there with so many competitions to compete in. So if Silva is able to retain a level of sharpness that allows him to play every game, he could also end up as the most nailed-on starter in Chelsea’s defence, especially helpful given his price.

A for me. Dier solid choice in defence and would not want to double up in Southampton defence. Alli been playing well in friendlies and price point to move down to Greenwood or Foden or to Ziyech /Pulisic. Actually option B with fit Ziyech would be my top choice

Gabriel has signed for Arsenal, but I assume that his 14 day quarantine precludes him from being in the Arsenal squad when they play Fulham in gameweek 1.

That increases the chances of Saliba starting methinks.

Even if (and before) he goes, you could have Holding, Saliba and Luiz as three CBs.

Will Arteta play at the back four against weaker opposition though?

I keep scouring the members area for any data that would demonstrate to me that Werner is worth paying an extra 1m for, rather than just getting Pulisic once fit -- the 1m saved would really help my team.

Is there any stat that I should look at that would persuade me I'm wrong?

So far the £5.5 mid slot in my team has been occupied by Armstrong. Having seen the comparison tool with him alongside ASM, and the projected point returns according to the RMT tool, it would appear that ASM comes out on top. What do you guys reckon? What do you guys think? Worth swapping him for ASM or keep Armstrong?

I'd take Saka. He has the third most assists in the PL aside from TAA and KdB. He's in great form and he's versatile so he can play anywhere in midfield/wing not to mention the best first two fixtures of any player.

ASM is far more of an attacking threat for his team than Armstrong. At the minute I have both to compensate for 3 premiumish strikers but I have a feeling that Armstrong over-performed last year and that he will have a smaller goal/assist contribution this year.

Reports coming from Sky and the fact that Greenwood, Rashford and Martial are difficult to drop right now. Add Sancho to the mix and it'll be amusing watching this United team get countered over and over again. I’ve shared my thoughts on why why I think your opinion that Ole is stuck in the 90’s is at best tenuous - namely that (in the scenario you’ve constructed where he’s is 100% guaranteed to start Pogba & VDB together along with Bruno) he would be playing 3 midfielders with two wide forwards & a centre forward which was unheard of in the 90’s - and that in the team Ole played in in the 90’s, they didn’t use this “two box to box without an anchor”... they always had a defensive minded midfielder in a midfield two... which would be quite far away from the midfield you’re certain he’s planning to operate this season

I’m sorry if you feel that’s condescending - but you’re going to get people sharing their opinions with you on topics like this so probably best to thicken the skin & sharpen the pencil 😉

Depends how you're getting him in, for example, Auba is +0.5 so price rise doesn't matter.

The more highly owned he is, the slower the price rise. I'm waiting until GW3 and I don't see him rising more than 0.3. Trading Auba will be fine.

Like most people, I've been tinkering endlessly and the formation I keep coming back to is a 5-4-1 with 7 premiums (3 defs, 3 mids, 1 forward).

Value-wise, it looks preferable to a more attack-orientated set up (with mid-priced 6-7m mids and forwards), very few of which offer much appeal compared to the similarly priced defenders.

    Anyone else considering this approach?

I think the chance of that happening is much lreduced by picking a premium forward who is rarely ever benched (Jimmy, Vardy, Ings etc) and which enables an easy switch to another premium as required.

Of course there's an element of risk, but then again there is a big upside too.

That's true - avoid Aguero or Jesus! You'd need to keep a transfer free for late news so you can switch to another striker. That means you'd need an extremely settled and inflexible squad behind, that doesn't eat up the transfer.

5 at the back strategies are all bad because of cost efficiency.

4.5m defenders are worth a lot more than the same at midfield or forward. It's easy to look at the prices and go... my 6.0 defender will outscore my 6.0 mid so therefore I should get defenders instead. What ends up happening is you end up with these sorts of comparisons:

      A) Doherty + Bissouma
      B) KWP + Pereira

And over the season, by swapping that mid spot around, you will score way more with B than with A.

The way I see it is in order to maximise TV you need to be flexible across defence, mids and attack in order to jump on the rises - if you adopt a premium defence set and forget formation you’re tied in.
Later in the season when the defence is really kicking those who built TV will be able to have the best of both worlds

          1. pingissimus
            • 5 Years

That way you spend how much in transfers?

See your point of view. It was how I played it last season. Did pretty well and could and should have done better. One way to have done better was to limit my transfers to certain positions and forget TV. Actually did better in restart when I threw away 2 million in GW30 and just went with what I wanted despite that loss 🙂

Don't believe in the multiple 4.5 set ups though - I'm thinking there are going to be plenty of unplanned transfers there.

The "risk" I'm taking is to believe that Trent and Robbo are going to get sufficient cs to make them way better than all those 5.5s. Attacking returns from them are a given.

      I've gone back to TAA/VVD/Robbo! The 2 4.5s rotate, avoiding Top 6. Either Taylor/Vinagre or KWP/Webster. I staying off a 4m def.

The 2 at 8.5 are fine. GW3 I'll get Kev for Auba and drop one of my strikers to Martial. Should have enough cash to upgrade a midf following week to something emerging in the mid-range.

                  Decent strategy.

Pretty sure I have enough left up top to work my way onto whoever I want pretty much. The one scenario that looks hardest is a big 3 in midfield but I'm prepared to forego that.

Still need to convince myself of my midfield set up. Not template through and through

A if you must. The only justification for premium defense is if you get Robbo, TAA or Doherty and basically treat them as additional midfielders in potential.

I don't like it this season. Limits bandwagon potential.

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

That’s the reasoning with the defence

Actually have positions up front to hit most likely bandwagons after 3 matches or so - pretty balanced set up. Not interested in ones that happen before that.

The one formation I’d struggle to hit is 3 premium mids. It’d be possible but initially would give me a fairly bare frontline. Happy to make that compromise.

Not a life sentence formation. Would review after 4/5 and would shift funds forward if it looked sensible

I don't know how you're coming up with that. Bruno's strength is in penetrating the opposition's defensive lines.
He's actually quite poor at maintaining possession.
The most likely use for VDB at United is as cover for Pogba and Bruno. He's not at the same level De Jong was when leaving Ajax. He will be introduced gradually and used on a rotation basis.

You're quite wrong about how Bruno plays.

He's scored over 0.5 goals/game. And his passing heat chart is very advanced i.e. he always looks to play forward passes. At a much higher rate than Alonso did who was more about retaining possession. He's an attacking midfielder with emphasis on 'attacking'.

Don't touch Chelsea defensive assets. Simple as. Lampards approach to defence is a Bayern style aggressive defensive line, without the players to perform Bayern's reknowned recovery runs. Adding a veteran to that situation will bring more chaos than calm.

Looks fairly decently balanced. Could look to save 0.5 - 1.5 by Egan > 4.5 and (or) Doherty > Dier/Davies
(Waiting to see whether Doherty poses the same attacking potential at Spurs before biting the bullet. My worry is that he'll be asked to stay wider than at Wolves where he had licence to roam.)

Who’s transferring Wood in and when? He’s my go to 6.5 striker (also Haller potentially from gw8/9)

On the radar as a possible down the line - depends on how Adams goes and where Bats ends up - can't see him staying at Chelsea as 4th striker

No value in 6.5 strikers compared with defensive assets like Doherty and Van Djik.

There’s value in Wood with the fixtures he has. He’s had two very steady seasons under his belt now. Strong bench needed this season more than ever and Wood + 4.5 (Taylor) May just be better than VVD + Davis

Wood is very capable of going half a season without scoring.

He's someone I'd choose when his form coincides with the form of another player that forces me to own a clogger like wood.

I need to check his stats in flat track bully etc and just play the fixtures. Is his service from Westwood, McNeal, Taylor/Pieters not decent?

He's a good pick if he plays a full season.133 pts in 29 starts last year.

On paper? Never, prefer the likes of Antonio, Rodrigo, DCL over the course of the season

Wood probably, Haller never lol. Moyes doesn't rate him, the fans don't rate him and the players probably don't rate him either. I'd be very surprised if West Ham finish above 15th this year. Better candidates out there, especially when all mids are fit.
