Pre-Season

The best strategies to navigate FPL Blank Gameweek 1 with or without chips

As neither one of Manchester United or Manchester City play in a Blank Gameweek 1 this season, planning for the new campaign is arguably harder than ever for Fantasy Premier league managers.

The awkward nature of the opening round of fixtures is, of course, not the only problem we face.

A short than usual pre-season means we have slightly less data and information regarding starting line-ups, some players are still missing due to coronavirus-related tests, either testing positive or receiving track and trace alerts.

And that’s before we even consider how long the Premier League campaign might last in light of the ongoing pandemic, as well as a new Gameweek deadline and sudden loss of early team news.

Amid all of that uncertainty, Fantasy managers face the challenge of navigating Blank Gameweek 1 without leaving themselves short-handed beyond it.

There are at least four teams that will not feature in Gameweek 1: Manchester United, Manchester City, Burnley and Aston Villa. Their absence from the opening round of fixtures just makes things more complicated for us, considering the two Manchester clubs have plenty of exciting options and Jack Grealish (£7.0m) could, in theory, replicate some of last season’s form.

How should we plan our strategy to navigate the early challenges? In this article, I would like to examine several possible options to solve the problem, added with the analysis of each strategy’s strengths and weaknesses.

Early Wildcard

Activating the Wildcard early has actually been a quite common strategy in the FPL world.

Such tactic has been one of the crowd’s favourite as it gives the flexibility to follow any early season bandwagon that you might have missed out on. Think of the furore surrounding Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) in 2018/19 or the John Lundstram (£5.5m) last year.

Going for the Wildcard sooner rather than later also helps you identify the early-season premium template, which in consequence influences the squad value in a very positive way.

The negative side of using the Wildcard so quickly is on the knock-on effect it has one any long-term plans, as the second one feels so far away.

It pushes the managers to the situation where there is no contingency plan outside taking hits should unprecedented events occur between the first and the second Wildcard activation.

For the 2020/21 season, in particular, there are so many factors to consider.

After the Blank Gameweek, the four fixtureless teams have quite promising runs in the near future, at least according to the Fixture Difficulty Rating (FDR) metric from the official FPL site.

Aston Villa will face a Sheffield United outfit without Dean Henderson (£5.5m) and a newly-promoted Fulham side. Burnley host Leicester and Southampton, while Manchester City face Wolves and the Foxes themselves. Admittedly, those fixtures are not the easiest but they improve beyond that.

Fernandes haul raises the bar for top 10k's most popular captain Salah

However, Manchester United go into Gameweek 2 facing Crystal Palace and then Brighton, so making a move to get on Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m), Marcus Rashford (£9.5m), Anthony Martial (£9.0m) or Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) is tempting indeed.

Deploying that early Wildcard in Gameweek 2 or 3 could certainly help steal a march on those around you, with Fernandes and Martial against Palace or Brighton acting as big differentials.

Furthermore, in this strangest of seasons, it might take longer than usual to find out who the budget enablers are too. In a usual campaign, each team would have played maybe four to five friendlies at least, for us to know the starting £4.0m defenders and £4.5m forwards before Gameweek 1.

This time around, much less is certain with Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) injured at Palace, Ben Johnson (£4.0m) still competing for minutes with Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) and Rhian Brewster‘s (£4.5m) Liverpool future still hanging in some sort of balance.

There are significant caveats to this strategy, of course. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the transfer window remains open into the first week of October, after the Gameweek 2 or 3 deadline.

Activating the Wildcard before this shuts could be very risky indeed, especially with Lionel Messi rumoured to be on his way to English shores.

Trying to balance emerging bandwagons, injuries, COVID-19 regulations, or even another lockdown, could prove tricky for those who have already used their Wildcard early on.

EARLY MINI-WILDCARD

Aubameyang outperforms Salah in early audition for Gameweek 1 FPL captaincy

The early Mini-Wildcard strategy is pretty similar to the early Wildcard concept. Instead of activating that precious chip, we could save the free transfer on Gameweek 1 to do three transfers for Gameweek 3 with a four-point hit. It might sound uninspiring to take early points hits, but saving that Wildcard could prove crucial.

Obviously, a number set of transfers should be well-planned. Luckily, the fixtures make doing so quite easy at this stage.

For example, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (ful/WHU), Michail Antonio (NEW/ars), and Jamie Vardy (wba/BUR) each have relatively favourable initial fixtures before things get tougher from Gameweek 3 onwards.

This is where the early Mini-Wildcard strategy could take advantage, by replacing the trio with say, for example, Martial (BHA), Timo Werner (wba), and Raúl Jiménez (whu).

The Mini-Wildcard does retain some advantages of the early Wildcard strategy, and leaves the chip intact, but there are still plenty of potential disadvantages.

The pre-planned transfers make our strategy inflexible; should any unprecedented events occur such as injury or transfer / loan out of the players in our starting XI, we are left with no options to navigate the situation, except to (1) change the strategy to the early Wildcard, (2) take hits to transfer out the injured/transferred players, or (3) do nothing and accept the decreased team value.

The early Mini-Wildcard strategy also prevents us from overhauling the majority of our squad at the same time – three players is probably the limit with an acceptable amount of point hits taken.

TRANSFER PLAN TEMPLATE

The template transfer plan might be one of the most popular strategies discussed online. Executed very similarly with the early Mini-Wildcard strategy, this does not involve point hit and uses the free transfer in each Gameweek accordingly.

One of the most fashionable transfer plans mentioned is the switch around the premium players, having Aubameyang and Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) the start, then move the Egyptian for Fernandes in Gameweek 3, and the switch the Arsenal man to Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) in Gameweek 3.

The other options are to transfer in Greenwood / Rashford / Martial for Gameweek 2, and Sterling / Werner / Ziyech in for Gameweek 3.

The upside point of the transfer plan template strategy is that the captain selection thinking is going well and inline with the transfer.

By having the aforementioned transfer plan, we could have the captain / vice-captain options of:

  • Gameweek 1: Salah against Leeds or Aubameyang at Fulham
  • Gameweek 2: Aubameyang against West Ham or Bruno Fernandes vs Crystal Palace
  • Gameweek 3: Bruno Fernandes vs Brighton or De Bruyne against Leicester
  • Gameweek 4: De Bruyne against Leeds
  • Gameweek 5: Bruno Fernandes vs Newcastle
  • Gameweek 6: De Bruyne against West Ham

What a set of promising fixture-based captaincy selection that is. However, there is still a certain degree of inflexibility involved in this strategy if other issues arise in that time.

Benching Manchester assets in BGW1

Another popular strategy in the FPL community is to own a Manchester asset in Blank Gameweek 1 and simply bench them.

However, this is likely only effective if you go for one of the cheaper assets, ruling out De Bruyne, Sterling Fernandes.

Rashford, Martial, Greenwood, Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), or Phil Foden (£6.5m) seem much more appropriate options for this strategy, although you will have to make sure you are confident in your budget enablers elsewhere too.

That’s because you will almost certainly have to start them in Blank Gameweek 1. Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) has already put himself forward for this, while Jarrad Branthwaite (£4.0m), Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) and perhaps Tyrick Mitchell (£4.0m) are others to consider.

By applying this strategy, the weakness of transfer inflexibility from the previous strategies can be avoided. The managers who go down this route might also end up getting some price rises out of the Manchester asset they hold from the beginning.

However, it goes without saying that this strategy does damage your points ceiling for Blank Gameweek 1 considering you’ll be leaving a heftier than usual chunk on the bench.

CONCLUSION

As tough as the challenge might be, we somehow always have options of escape routes as FPL managers. Obviously, there is no “correct way” to navigate Blank Gameweek 1 as we cannot see the future, but with several medium-term plans and educated estimation, we might optimise our damage control.

Every manager will eventually decide the strategy that suits each of them the most; whether you take the risk of benching expensive assets or activating a Wildcard early.

I, personally, would prefer to bench someone like Greenwood in Gameweek 1 (the cheapest route to the Manchester assets with relatively safe game time).

The uncertainties at this time, such as COVID-19 implications, late transfer window deadline, and even the future of Messi, does not help me to see that taking the risk having no Wildcard could be worth it for higher point ceilings (only) in the first two Gameweeks.

Hopefully you found this article useful but remember to go with the strategy that suits you best.

Honestly TAA to Robbo isn't a terrible idea if that's the upgrade you're getting. Robbo has been in insane from since the restart and continued it in the Community Shield, he can easily perform better than TAA opening weeks. Otherwise ASM -> Soucek but with those fixtures and ASM at striker I wouldn't advise it.

I expect dvb to play as one of the midfield 3 (Bruno, Pogba, Matic positions). Potentially as backup.

Only issue is none of the two strikers come in from the right. They both are very similar and it would be one of them with greenwood ideally. I still think united will get a right winger.

I’d do B but with Adams of those

Not keen on Chelsea double up this early. Ziyech might be gold of course but I suspect it’s worth waiting on Havertz or Puli. GW2 fixture says no rush to me.

Slightly depends how much they play in your side. See Koucek as a solid gold first bench option at 5.0 and playable. ASM is a pricey bench option and really needs to play

If Newcastle get someone like Wilson then ASM gets way more attractive. Right now Newcastle options up top are poor to horrid

It gives quite a bit of flexibility if especially if Brewster gets a move. Best effort I’ve seen at getting to get Auba/Salah/Kane (and 3 x 7.5M+ players!!!!) you obviously lose out in defence to make that happen but gotta trade somewhere.

3 of your back 5 need keeping an eye on for transfers/fitness/starts, so you’re basically relying a lot on Vinagre holding a spot and another 4.5 option emerging to replace Justin but that sounds reasonable enough.

Those transfers aren’t essential if you end up with other fires to put out.

It’s good enough to make me question the team I thought I’d settled on.

I would rather take a -4 hit in Gw2 than bench a player who might get injured or fall down the pecking order with a transfer in like Sancho. If you are not planning on three Man U attackers then two out of Bruno / Rashford / Martial is probably better value anyway than Greenwood despite his kinder price. Just my thinking going into Gw1.

But if you are set on this, then ditch Taylor and get a 4.5 that plays gw1. Vinagre is a great option anyway.

Anyone else going with Doherty? I just can't get the attacking version of Ivanovic under Mourinho out of my mind. And he didn't start out that way. Doherty has actually been doing that for two years already. Maybe he can score even more at Spurs than Wolves? The starting fixtures help as well of course.

Yep, he's nailed in my team. People underestimating Jose here, he knows what he's doing and will play to Doherty's strengths. Play the "wait and see" game and you miss out on the solid fixtures and everyone else is getting him too, so what's the point? Plays as a RW in attack, gets clean sheets for a second season Jose defense with great fixtures, excellent option.

Don't think Jose rotates that much even if fixtures come thick and fast. Plus its early season so players should be quite fit and rested. But yes, it could affect performance for sure.

Overrated factor, he'll rotate and the squad is fit and has solid depth anyways. Doesn't give enough concern to put me off perfectly fine assets.

I’m pondering a Dier to Doherty, Son to Alli move atm.

I really contemplated owning TAA, Robertson and Doherty. But I think early doors I want the flexibility of jumping on attackers that emerge as the best options and then maybe later or with Wildcard look to getting all three. Liverpool fixtures 2 and 3 aren't the best anyway. So I have gone with TAA and Doherty as of now.

I’ve gone for the Trent/Robbo double up, simply because I see them more as midfielders with a high chance of an extra 4 points for a CS.

I also think that a Pool defence double up is very advantageous as just owning Trent is a bit of pointless because pretty much everyone will own him imo...

Just switched from Doh to Robbo 🙂

There's just enough doubt over Doh for me and the fixture glut bothers me early on. Not really expecting rotation more slightly weary performances. One legged ties with long travel

Other factor is the move from Robbo to Doh is easy whereas the opposite would be tough.

Expecting a mini WC rejig anyway around 5 and Doh in then if Liverpool are looking iffy. Think the second half of the fixture run looks better anyway

Thinking Werner + Vardy + Ings up front for GW1 could be gold.

    Thoughts on these options?:
    a) Alli, Werner, Vardy, Ings in a 3-4-3
    b) Mane, Son, Werner, Ings in a 3-5-2

Basically Alli + Vardy or Mane + Son

Mane + Son. Primarily because no Alli. Although Mane + Son is much more expensive as well. There is a lot of competition in Spurs Midfield. We don't know where Alli will play even if he does. I am not going to gamble on him early doors especially when we need transfers badly due to the Gw1 blank.

I have Son. Some Spurs fans think Mourinho could go with a 352 (532 a better description maybe). And Doherty makes that wing back positions his own and Son gets closer to goal along with Kane. But even if that doesn't happen, still think Son is a good proven Fpl option and if he clicks then Spurs have a lot of good fixtures.

I would like to have Vardy, but just think Ings, Martial, Werner could be better. Leicester last third of the season looked quite poor. I am starting with Ings and Werner and looking to shift one of them to Martial as soon as possible. But would never bet against Vardy, of course.

3-5-2 as a defensive formation isn't going to happen, Jose love his 4-2-3-1 and that's all he's used with Spurs even in friendlies. It does become a 3-4-3 in attack thought but that doesn't mean Son will go to ST, if anything he'll be keeping the width on the left which sucks for him as an option.

Everton signing Rodriguez gives me a slight doubt but the team hasn't played a match together and Mou defense is elite so Spurs.

If Arsenal sign Partey the situation may change but Spurs are extremely likely to keep a clean sheet in my mind.

Spurs. Even though Arteta is trying hard to improve defence, he still doesn't have a settled back four. But they are sure, one to watch as the season progresses.

Newly promoted teams are usually up for it first game of the season.
So Spurs although I think there will be no clean sheets in either game.

    2 combo”s I’m considering.

    1.
    A) VVD + JWP
    B) Robertson + Armstrong
    (I have TAA)

    2.
    A) Salah + Martial(benched wk1.) Would be Salah >> Bruno in wk2
    B) Bruno(benched)+ Kane. I’d probably keep Kane and roll the FT.

If you believe he'll score more points, get him in. Doesn't matter that he's a differential. Penalties and home consistency mean I prefer Salah but Mane's a great option too - though I have neither!

Saint Maximin might miss playing Bournemouth this year (1G 3A in 2 games vs them last season)

21 blanks in his other 25 appearances last season

Bit like Deulofeu & his insane record vs Cardiff & Huddersfield the season before

I often wonder if the old adage "X has great record (47 G 15A) in the last 4 matches against Y" actually stacks up in reality? It might do retrospectively but it would be nice to see some research that it's predictive another haul in the coming season. Trouble is that you'd have to begin the research now and report back after a season or two.

I said I'd never go down the GK rotation past but this is what a Ryan and McCarthy rotation could look like across 38 GWs.

cpa, new, bur, WBA, cpa, WBA, avl, NEW, avl, MAN, bha, SHU, ful, SHU, ful, WHU, WOL, lee, lee, FUL, AVL, man, new, AVL, CPA, wba, shu, BHA, NEW, BUR, wba, CPA, shu, LEE, wol, FUL, LEE, whu

Inevitably a lot of benched points in the mix but looks mighty tempting to me written like that.

I'm committed to the keeper roster. If it gets 50% CS, that would be a helluva record for 9m.
And what else would you get for 9m? When you look at 5m/4m there's Dubravka - injured, Guaita - okay for some but for me Palace have problems at the back. Of the other options the only acceptable one is whichever keeper Arsenal settle on. Now while that might result in 2 or 3 more clean sheets, you'd be down on save points and baps. A keeper won't win baps if his team scores - like Arsenal will but Brighton not so much.

My worry is Brighton will perform counter to fixtures with Potter playing more open progressive systems in prime fixtures. The Brighton cs fell fairly randomly last time - not with form book so much.

IIRC, Brighton kept 9 CS, 7 to the sort of lowly teams in this rota, and only 2 to big teams. I think that's in line with my expectations.

I would be looking for a slight improvement on that and more from Saints. I still think between them they can manage 18-19 CS.

According to my chart, I've got Ryan down for 16 games out of 38. 50% CS against the weakest 8 defences is doable, I think.

Wondering if Digne and Doherty are the two best defenders (Liverpool aside) for the first 10 fixtures, after which one can go for Laporte to catch City's fixture swing. Fixtures are excellent, both teams highly rated in the season ticker.

Defenses for both teams should surely improve, Everton have signed a very good defensive midfielder and are soon adding midfield energy in Doucoure. Carlo's pretty decent at organizing a defense too so I expect the performances to be different to the holiday known as Project Restart. Second season Jose always does well, no reason to not expect that again after the improved performances after restart.

Both players offensive and will get attacking returns though people understandably have doubts, however attacking the first 5 fixtures seems an acceptable risk considering their quality instead of the usual "wait and see".

Didn't touched my midfield and attack the last days but still struggling setting up the defense this year.

Was all set on McCarthy but start to lean towards Ryan again, think the Brighton defensive set up with 3 center backs will help Ryan help racking up those save points.
Got Vinagre but rumors are Wolves are near signing Ghoulam and I don't want to waste a transfer early on my defense.
Like Dier but what puts me off are the European games at the start and we have seen what this did to Wolves last year at the start of the season.

    Backline atm is:
McCarthy/4.0, TAA, Vinagre, Dier, Taylor and Johnson

But thinking of changing this to:
Ryan/4.0, TAA, Saiss, KWP, Taylor and Johnson

Good reasoning's or am I overthinking here ?

    1. Flair
      • 3 Years

First defense is miles better than the second, stick with it. Ghoulam rumors seem to have gone away, I'd reassess before the deadline but don't remove him prematurely.

Agree about Vinager - he stays in mine until something is confirmed. If a new LB came in after GW1 deadline, Vinny would still play a good few games.
I'm not in favour of Johnson - either he doesn't play, or after GW1 he does play and gets a string of 0s and 1s.

Dont think Dier would be playing early Europa games tbh (not 100% on that)
Its an ok defence really, TAA and Saiss and rotate Taylor and KWP each week (if 3 at the back anyway)
Im not having Vinagre, but if they dont sign a lwft sided defender hes in my team. I think the priority is a right wingback

    B) Mitro + Greenwood (in a 343)

No TAA team, can hear the cries already, nevertheless.

    McCarthy (Steer)
    Justin, Vinagre, KWP, (Mitchell, Johnson)
    Salah, Auba, Mane, Son, Soucek
    Werner, Adams, (Davis)

GW1 Mane to Rashford, GW2 Son to KDB/Sterling

    Bring on the hate XD

I hate that defence. Just looking at it makes me cry. Cant you downgrade Soucek to a 4.5 mid and upgrade a 4.5 def to a 5mill?

landing 1.8 mil in 18/19 and 370k in 19/20 would hurt more

Too big in midfield - unbalnces your whole team. You can only captain one of them.

Weak bench may hurt you especially if KWP is rotated or Wolves sign a wingback. Same goes with Adams being rotated.

No TAA isn't the issue, that insanely unbalanced team is the issue.

Though I do like parts of it, it's certainly interesting
