Scout Reports

How will Donny van de Beek fit into the United midfield and what is his FPL appeal?

One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

Everything tells me to switch from Salah to Mane. Mane was so much more dangerous today and got a goal while Salah looked like he'd lead in his boots.

I simply can't push myself to do it. Guaranteed Salah would score a hatrick if I ditch. Put your life savings on it.

They’ve scored very similarly last two seasons

Additionally, this is dependant on strategy, but if we’re going to use our FTs on targeting the premium mids and their fixtures we may as well opt for what appears better in the short term, which atm is Mane.

      So eg

      GW1 Mane Auba
GW2 Mane hauls GW2 but you switch to Bruno
GW3 Salah suddenly lights up and you can have the option of Auba to Salah dependant on the lie of the land at that moment

Instead of having to pick and stick with one, perhaps there’s a way of capturing each of their hauls

    Mccarthy (Martinez)
Trent - Vinagre - Davies (Egan & Mitchell)
Auba - Soucek - Bissouma - Mané (Greenwood)
    Ings - Werner - Mitro

Team now looking like this. Would it be a good move to swap Mitro for Davis and make way for a stronger midfielder than Soucek/Bissouma?

    McCarthy - 4

    TAA - Doherty (Laporte) - ***** - Vinagre - KWP

    Mane (Salah) - Auba - ***** - Reed - Bissouma

Werner - Ings - Brewster (Davis)

Pretty set on this blueprint. The variations come in the form of those ***** slots in the middle:

    A) Robertson Soucek and 1.5 itb
    B) Robertson Lemina/Anguissa and Mitro
    C) Saiss Pulisic and above
    D) Saiss Salah with both Brewster AND Davis

Yes but one who takes it very seriously and gambles for profit only. The vast majority don't . This site has a significant number of younger visitors and promoting gambling for financial click through gain in this arena is irresponsible and wrong. If people wish to start gambling it should not be in this manner.

Not sure I can agree with this. Sports betting is all over football, and young families go to football matches. You have to be 16 to have an FF team so no one under that age should be on here. At least this site should only be targeting adults.

Not that I agree with football’s inextricable links with betting...

Eventually a betting company is going to buy FFS, and then you won't be able to play without a betting account. But it all starts with a 'partnership'. Site heading in an unfortunate direction.

    CHANGE MY MIND

There is only 1 true option in the 5-6m striker bracket - Mitrovic.

Mitrovic is his side's talisman, the absolute focal point (never underestimate this) and crucially the only striker in the 5-6m bracket who actually scores 10+ goals a season consistently.

I'm seeing a lot of people singing the praises of a certain new 29 yr old Leeds forward who has only breached 10 goals once in his entire career (averaging 7 for his past 5 seasons).

Others have landed on Adams, who is not even guarantied nailed on and if he is will be far and away second fiddle to ings as a focal point in attack.

Personally if they were nailed, I MIGHT be swayed by the underestimated creativity of Iheanacho or the efficiency of Mousset, but they're not, so I'm not.

Unless you're picking 2/3 strikers valued at 6.5 or above, Mitrovic is an absolute must have for me.

That is my biggest piece of advice this season - 2 x 4.5 strikers is not an option, go Mitrovic or go higher.

I agree - unless he gets injured or something I don't see how he doesn't score double figures this season - and for a 6.0 that will do nicely.

In reality, he’s not just the pick of the cheap forwards, but the attackers in general atm.

If I’m picking one sub 7.5 attacker it is either Soucek and save a million or Mitrovic and grab another Reed/Bissouma

Some will advocate both, but one is enough imho

Brewster’s value may change the landscape too.

I’d rather take him and 1.5 for elsewhere

I'm guessing there were a few PL clubs who had premium strikers who failed to get to 10 last time out. The every season record is scarcely longstanding. He only got 9 in fact for Newcastle and 11 for Fulham so let's average it as 10. Ayew territory. Barnes territory.

If you want all 10 he might get you need to hold all season of course. No one will do that.

This Fulham side is not nearly as attacking in intent as the last one remember - lowest scorers buy a distance int he top 4 of the championship.

That is unless Championship goals count. And for me, they absolutely do. It's a much tougher league than most allow for and he's gone 10 + in his past 2 seasons there as well.

Try checking how many goals Adams scored in his season there - in a non promoted side 🙂

Yes Talismen count. But I’m a Palace supporter. Zaha had a very tidy FPL record between 2017-19 but flunked last time. He’s the ultimate talisman so it’s scarcely an immutable law

He flunked having been shifted wider, and with his mind having been shifted from Palace too. Adams has potential but also has Ings in his way.

Are you getting close to arguing that Mitro is good because he plays for a poor side 🙂 Might be it’s a benefit to play alongside Ings

Not quite that. More in the way that a 9.5 Werner will likely be of much more value than the 9.5 Gabriel Jesus will require of a buyer. The extent to which the teams attacking approach is based around a player or lends itself to that player being involved in returns is a massive factor for me especially when it comes to low-mid price options. Again, Adams has great potential, and could even become of greater importance to Saints as things develop, especially if Ings gets an injury (in which case I will look hard at him myself).

Not writing Mitro off. Just think there are other options which you appear to discount.

Barnes is another I’d look at if I was in the 6.0 market. Until last year when he was consistently injured he produced regularly and was value despite sharing returns.

Truthfully it isn’t a price point that tempts me much. To get value from anyone there you likely need to hold for a depressingly long time or spend wasteful transfers. Got lucky with more of less perfect Pukki last time and Jim before that but that was more luck than anything else.

And yes Fulham were low scorers, but Mitrovic was top. The talisman/focal point issue coming in to play. This transcends style or attacking intent for me. It is more inevitable than any other factor.

Talisman unlike the others you mention and he couldn't have asked for 3 better fixtures to start with. We can agree to disagree, but he is nailed in my initial team. At the moment 😛

            Disagree on fixtures actually

People forget that Villa were very obstinate in defence post restart - very mid table and likely to liock up shop away. Arsenal too are much improved. Leeds led the way in defence in the Championship

Quite - he’s a punt - the thread is putting him close to essential and definitely in his price bracket

His best season in the PL exactly equates to Ayew last season 😀

Too many from 1 team is a MYTH.

Choose players you believe are going to do well for a period of time (Ideally 5 weeks+)

Don't look for negativity, if you like JWP for his points potential and fixtures, go with JWP.
