Lundstram back on the scoresheet as Wilder offers O’Connell fitness update

There is a cluster of pre-season friendlies taking place on the final weekend before the 2020/21 Premier League campaign gets underway and we’ll be bringing you all the key Fantasy Premier League headlines from those fixtures over the coming days.

The action kicked off on Friday in South Yorkshire, with Sheffield United sharing four goals with Preston North End in their final warm-up match before the competitive action commences.

Sheffield United 2-2 Preston North End

  • Goals: John Lundstram (£5.5m), Billy Sharp (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Oliver McBurnie (£6.0m), Lys Mousset (£6.0m)

John Lundstram (£5.5m) made his first appearance of pre-season on Friday, scoring in a 45-minute run-out for Sheffield United in their two-all draw with Preston North End.

The recently reclassified FPL midfielder, whose future is still to be resolved, slotted home a 36th-minute opener for the Blades after being teed up by Oliver McBurnie (£6.0m).

McBurnie had pulled out of the Scotland squad earlier in the week, citing injury, but was again fit enough for another pre-season appearance at Bramall Lane, before being replaced by Lys Mousset (£6.0m) at the break.

Mousset limped off with just under 20 minutes of the contest to go but boss Chris Wilder wasn’t too concerned about the knock that forced the Frenchman’s substitution, saying:

It’s looking alright. He’s took a whack to the top of his toe. It’s not a pull, it’s not a serious injury. A bit of TLC from the physios to Lys’s toe and the six inches between his ears, will get him back out on the grass hopefully on Monday and Tuesday. He’ll be fine.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Jack O’Connell (£5.0m) again wasn’t involved and hasn’t kicked a ball in pre-season.

The centre-back is set to be available in Gameweek 1, however, with his manager saying after full-time:

Jack will be fit for Wolves, 100%. He’s working away with the conditioners. No risk today.

Not an ideal situation, we would have liked him to have got minutes, but we’ll most likely have a bounce game amongst ourselves during the week. Jack will be available for that, I’m told.

We’re expecting everyone to be fit and healthy.

Wilder also confirmed that Jack Rodwell (unpriced) will be available after a period of self-isolation.

On the field, Billy Sharp (£6.0m) scored his third goal of pre-season and again stepped up to take a penalty when Oliver Norwood (£5.0m) was on the pitch.

Sharp made no mistake from 12 yards after Mousset had forced a handball out of Preston’s Ben Pearson.

The veteran striker has played more pre-season minutes than any Sheffield United player, although the unavailability of McBurnie and David McGoldrick (£5.5m) has partly accounted for that.

Wilder’s starting XI was about as strong as it could be, given O’Connell’s absence and the non-involvement of seven Bladesmen who are away on international duty.

Centre-half Kean Bryan deputised for Enda Stevens (£5.5m) down the left flank, with Wilder confirming that the Blades were in the market for two wing-backs – amongst others – to put pressure on the Ireland international and George Baldock (£5.5m).

A patched-up defence including back-up goalkeeper Wes Foderingham (£4.5m) and deputy centre-halves Jack Robinson (£4.5m) and Phil Jagielka (unpriced) was far from watertight, with Preston arguably having the better of the chances and hitting the woodwork twice in quick succession when the game was goalless.

The visitors levelled from the spot after Robinson had committed a foul in his own area and then grabbed a late equaliser from a corner with the last attack of the game.

Sheffield United XI: Foderingham, Basham, Jagielka, J. Robinson, Baldock, Lundstram (Slater 45), Norwood, Osborn, Bryan, McBurnie (Mousset 45, Hackford 72), Sharp.

Belated question - Why on earth are internationals being played right now? Is this not the most irresponsible bit of planning in footballing history? Why not just bin the Vacations league?

I think it's off the scale and worse than either. But then I'm biased, I'm a whinger. International football, besides UEROs and WC is dead as a dodo.

There's zero need for friendlies and more "tournament" fixtures. It just detracts from club football far too much and puts extra stress and complications in the schedules that inevitably lead to more injuries.

I'm not even approaching it from a Cerveza sickness angle. More so just from a moral footballing one, given how compacted the games and schedule has been and will be. Just screams pure greed from FIFA and UEFA.

It’s the plane that is the risk with the recycled air. If one person on a plane has it basically everyone will .

Not really. Aeroplanes clean the air well, same as at gyms.

If the plane was able to do that they’d be incorporating that technology everywhere. Literally every long haul flight I’ve been on has resulted in some sort of lurgy.

Agreed with most of your points. Not sure I agree with this, but don't have solid scientific facts to argue. It costs airlines fuel to clean air (not sure I understand the full concept as you're up in a clear blue sky). Gyms can just open windows - no?

The tournament itself, and even more importantly, it’s qualifying process - needs to be dramatically slimmed down

Some of the teams that get to play in it wouldn’t last in the third division of most top european club leagues - in terms of actual quality of football, the vast majority of the 64 games in the World Cup are shocking

International football is so far behind club football it’s scary

I've seen too many great players join PL or even move between teams in PL, who flounder.

I'll wait. If it costs me +0.2 to buy into any clear potential, that's fine. A good team for gw1 with transfers & cash itb to ease into the emerging equations is my strategy 🙂

    Rate this effort

    McCarthy 4
    Taa Davies saliba vinegar 4
    Auba Salah alli soucek 4.5
    Werner Ings Mitro
0,5 banked so I can do Ings to martial

Pretty template so I'll ward off some question marks over Saliba - Arteta is rebuilding this team and he is core to that. I can see him starting the 2nd game at Home. The other options all have some question marks ... Jack Robinson (not nailed), Ayling (rubbish fixtures), Justin (dont expect an injury ravaged defence to do that much), KWP (already have mccarthy and he doesnt cover wk2 very well) so if im going to punt anywhere it seems reasonable to me.

Pickford being in goal is a joke. Intentional football, just pick the stand out English players. Anything else just tells the main players they don’t need to play well, so they don’t need to really try.

Ok this idea that in internatianal football the squad gel is rubbish. It’s been shown time and time again. You need great defence For tournaments (that matters) and flair players with pace who can make a goal happen because there is no really style or identity. So if you play average players you are not encouraging the other players not picked to try and are telling the playing squad mediocracy is totally fine. Kane included, Ings should start. Kane is off the back of a bang average season and is an injury risk it seems

Did well enough to get us to the semi finals, and we haven't seen Henderson or Pope play for a team that doesn't have 15 defenders in the line up

And that's Pickford's fault? Pope and Henderson have shown they are better at making saves and claiming crosses, nothing else. They might be better, they deserve chances sure but why ignore what Pickford does offer in terms of comfort on the ball and passing out from the back, that's just biased

So good at passing out from the back that England are tracking for a 0-0 with Iceland. I do t dispute he’s a better passer but I’m saying being a better saver of the ball is more important in international football. Tournaments is what matters. When did City win the champs league last?

That's as stupid as me sarcastically saying pope and Henderson are so good at saves that they've conceded whenever they concede

That your opinion and that's fine, I'm just explaining why Pickford is there and likely to remain. I'm not sold on Pope on the ball but Henderson could be a saver that is also good on the ball

Ah it’s fine to have other views. Not meaning to be too brash. I guess I just really don’t rate Pickford. But until we actually get to the next cup meh. It isn’t all on Pickford. Others are dross as well

Pickford seems to have a lifetime pass from Southgate. Pope and Henderson are miles better.

Love the ‘hasn’t done anything wrong’ argument

You can put S me in goal against most of these teams and I ‘won’t do much wrong’

Then we get to a major tournament and they’ve been out of form for months and let us down

‘Good with his feet’ - translation - passes it square to the fall back or centre half under absolutely no pressure

Think you're overrating your own ability there

We got to a major tournament and Pickford let us down? There was me thinking he played very well and our playing out from the back was in part down to his skills on the ball

If that's what you saw then that's fine, but it's not what happens especially against the teams that know how to hold the ball and pressure England

IMO, the three most interesting players are Vinagre, Foden and Greenwood.

If they all nail a place in their teams (and by that I mean manage to play 60 mins+ in at least 70% of PL games) then they are going to represent excellent value for the season.

My take on Liverpool after watching the 90mins:

TAA hasn't played 1 minute of pre season and must be a real danger that he doesn't start next week.

Salah was lacklustre yet again. Looked completely devoid of confidence and was hooked at HT.

Mane starting to look really good again, also Firmino. They both got a goal.

Taki Minamino looks a really interesting option. Scored and got an assist and could have had more. Good chance he starts next week if Henderson isn't ready.

TAA was always going to struggle to play any friendly minutes today when he’s with England.

Minamino isn’t an option, he’s not combative enough for Liverpool’s midfield and he’s not going to start ahead of any of the front 3.
