How does Kai Havertz compare with Chelsea’s other FPL attacking assets?

Chelsea have continued their spending spree this summer with the acquisition of one of the most coveted young talents in Europe, Kai Havertz.

The attacking midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Blues, following in the footsteps of Timo Werner (£9.5m) in moving to west London from the Bundesliga.

Arguably the club’s biggest statement since the signing of Eden Hazard from Lille, the German has been priced up at £8.5m – in a similar bracket to Christian Pulisic (£8.5m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) – by Fantasy Premier League and has the potential to be a real bargain.

Anyone who dabbled in Fantasy Bundesliga this summer would have been excited by what they saw – including some ‘out of position’ run-outs up front – so we’ll assess his FPL credentials in the article below.

Born in Aachen, Germany in June 1999, Havertz started out in amateur football at just four years of age for Alemannia Mariadorf where his grandfather, Richard, was club chairman. His father was a policeman and mother a lawyer so discipline was something that was impressed upon him at a young age.

It was his grandfather who encouraged him in his younger days, spending time with the youngster knocking down gnomes in the garden with his left foot. Richard’s passing when Havertz was just 10 led the German to join his first professional club, Alemannia Aachen.

He only spent a year with his hometown club, with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in an 8-3 loss impressing them enough to make them sign the youngster. He was highly sought after by clubs across the country, including Borussia Monchengladbach and Koln, but Leverkusen pulled out all the stops to sign the exciting prospect.

He notched seven goals and two assists over 23 appearances in his first season in the U17-Bundesliga West but the next season was where he really shone.

After scoring 18 goals, he was awarded the silver Fritz Walter Medal in the 2015/16 season after being named the second-best German under-17s player; two years later he won the gold in the under-19s category.

In October 2016, at 17 years and 126 days of age, he became the youngest debutant in Bayer Leverkusen’s history and later became their youngest scorer with a strike against Wolfsburg in April.

He went on to become the youngest ever player in the Bundesliga to register 50 appearances. Coincidentally, the previous holder of that record was his new Chelsea teammate, Timo Werner. Havertz was also the youngest ever captain of Leverkusen.

After seven goals and 13 assists in his first two seasons, 2018/19 saw him become a household name in Germany with 17 goals from midfield, becoming the first teenager to hit that total in a Bundesliga season.

Nine of Havertz’s 17 goals gave Leverkusen a 1-0 lead and no player in the Bundesliga opened the scoring more frequently that season. Manager Peter Bosz’s attacking philosophy gave him a platform to flourish and he featured in every single game that campaign.

He took three penalties that season, posting an xG of 13.1 and a non-penalty xG of 10.9; this would indicate that he is a good finisher.

“I guess reading the game has always been one of my strengths. A certain composure on the ball and the ability to make the right choices quickly.” – Kai Havertz

Havertz started off the 2019/20 season by becoming the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 25 goals with a strike against Paderborn on the opening day. He went on to register 12 goals and six assists that campaign with an xG of 9.1. Only one of these was a penalty, which meant his non-penalty xG was 8.3. Again, he outperformed his xG significantly and even upped his xA to 6.2.

Over his last three seasons, his non-penalty xG+xA per 90 numbers have been on the rise every year and he averages an expected goal involvement every other game over that period.

“If you can always be one or two steps ahead of your opponent, you can already win the game, and I think that’s just the player he is.” – Leon Bailey, Havertz’s teammate.

Comparison v other Chelsea assets

Ziyech18.252.220.834.80.070.21
Havertz42.4584143.10.190.44

Unlike Ziyech, Havertz is not a volume shooter who takes a lot of speculative shots from outside the box: his minutes/shot is the lowest in the comparison.

However, a large percentage of the youngster’s efforts are on target (43%), compared to the Moroccan (34.8%). In fact, his goals per shot (0.19) is almost triple that of Ziyech’s (0.07).

What’s even more impressive is that Havertz scores with nearly half of his shots on target (44%) whereas Ziyech is closer to 20%. He even bests Werner, who has goals/shot of 0.18 and goals/shot on target of 0.38.

In terms of creativity, only Ziyech (20.8) created chances more frequently than Havertz (41) last season.

The Prospects

Havertz spent most of the 2019/20 season deployed as a no. 10, also featuring on the right flank and at centre-forward at times. Given that Ziyech’s preferred position is on the right wing and Pulisic has been effective on the left, Lampard is expected to use the German behind his compatriot Werner.

Werner is a very different striker compared to Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.5m). As we saw briefly in the Brighton friendly, he works a lot more off the ball, similar to Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.0m), who was playing as a no. 10, found himself in the box very often as a result of the German’s link-up play and the 4-3-3 that Lampard prefers shaped up into a 4-2-2-2 in transition. Given Havertz’ goal-scoring instincts, the prospects are mouth-watering, to say the least.

Chelsea were second only to Manchester City for expected goals last season, so creating chances was not a problem and by adding an ice-cold finisher like Havertz to their ranks, the Blues’ goal output should go up significantly this season.

With Havertz having had zero minutes with Chelsea in pre-season due to international involvement with Germany, it is perhaps unlikely that Lampard throws him into the fray straight away against Brighton, with a cameo appearance most likely. His minutes should improve as the weeks go on and he settles in, however.

In terms of injury, he has a good overall fitness record with only the muscle tear he suffered in November 2019 causing him to miss more than 15 days out with injury. He has been unavailable for just six games over the past three seasons due to injury or illness.

    Tinkering with no Salah:

    A) Salah & Taylor (4.5 DEF)
    B) Son & Robbo.

Starting with Ziyech, and eyeing off bringing in Foden and/or Havertz in the first few weeks, so I'm leaning to B

I have been tinkering with my team and have been trying to squeeze in 2 x MU players. My question is do we need 2 x MU or we have one and go for a new Chelsea signing or other?

    Have had Bruno/Greenwood, Bruno/Martial and Greewood/Martial. Thinking Bruno/Werner or Martial/Havertz.

Obs depends on who is starting.

I like one utd Attacker and 2 from Che with 1 being Werner, leaves more mid options - where the points should be at. There has to be a hatful of goals in that Chelsea attack.

For me, a player is only essential if you intend to captain him. I've made a table of likely captains through the season. They are Bruno, Werner, KDB/Sterling and TAA. So for me a 2nd United is not essential, no.

              hi Andy,

if you don't mind, would you share your planned captaincy rotation ? I assume, it's based on fixtures and home ?

              Thanks in advance

Not homes, fixtures against most defensively weakest sides, heavily featuring Fulham, WBA, West Ham, Villa.
It started with trying to implement Upside Chasing and Ultra-Aggressive Transfer strategies, but I soon realised they involved too many transfers that would be scuppered by price rises. So I've focused on just using 4 season-keepers in my GW2 squad: TAA, Bruno, KDB or Sterling and Werner.
In the light of Albright's response, I've had another look and reduced Werner to 4 shots, which means he doesn't need to be nailed into my team every week, but highly controversially, I'm planning to give the armband to TAA 11 times! I'm still modifying it so not point posting an early draft at this stage.

Not sure I'd necessarily have Vila as one the defensive weaklings this time around. They were sturdy in restart and high mid table for defence. I wouldn't be surprised to see that continue. Promoted sides tend to improve defensively in their second season.

That's very true. I have a fixture table that I will conti8nually revise as the season pans out.
The irony is that I've read so many analytical articles and posts, and constructed so many strategies, yet the one I seem to be settling on is the one I had before the fixtures were out: rotate Bruno and KDB with the armband! TAA adds nuance, but it's basically Plan A all along!

I've had a look. currently Villa are the opposition 4 times, and in 2 TAA is the captain. The idea being that there's a very high chance of a Liverpool clean sheet even if TAA gets no offensive returns.

That's decent reasoning in my book

TAA is the captain option for me against the likes of Palace Burnley Newcastle Villa who are liable to try and shut up shop and create few chances. Suspect WBA and Fulham can be added in.

Yes, and here's why I'm forgoing Salah and Mane. They are unlikely to score more than one goal against such opposition, so I think Trent is likely to come away with more FPL points in those games.

It's an interesting idea and TAA captain is sensible too since lad can haul some 20+ points. Are you going to start directly with double LIV defense ?

Although I doubt Bruno will replicate last year's sensational result and I put my faith in Martial but that remains to be seen. I suppose Aubameyang is a better pick than Bruno and should also be included in this equation, no ? With a new position and strong at home, I reckon he can produce shocking points too

I've had TAA/Robbo all along, with VVD in and out. Having 3 premium mids and a premium striker rules VVD out big time though. I've reduced Werner's captaincies to 4, all of which can be covered by Bruno or TAA, so in fact if he fluffs the first 4 weeks, I can bring Martial instead.

So I've got space for 3 midfield premiums. Auba? Could be but I'm off that idea at this time. I'm not even thinking Salah or Mane although all could come in for a Citizen. No, my current thought is to have Bruno, KDB AND Sterling, with the latter 2 c/vc to protect against Peptation. My current sense is that City will way outscore others teams (Chelsea and United could be big hitters too). Salah and Mane don't haul, and I can't tell when Auba might, but Sterling in particular has it in him and City do frequently hit the poorest sides for 4 and more.

TAA for captain: by restricting my primary captaincy options to LIV/CITY/UNITED, there are a good few matches where there aren't the prospects for a massacre. However, those GWs do involve Liverpool up against defensive sides who don't score much, so there is a high chance of a clean sheet at the minimum for Trent. There are only 2 GWs that are particularly tricky for a captain choice, and that’s when Liverpool and City play each other.

I'm on something similar. A couple of points I'm interested in your opinion on:

                      1. I've got Martial in too so am thinking about maybe dropping Bruno for the city double-up in midfield. My reasoning is similar to you that City will score the most again this season. Coupled with the -albeit contentious- argument that Raheem underperformed and so is undervalued & Bruno can't maintain the level last season so is slightly overvalued, maybe Martial -as the focal point- is the best utd pick?

                      2. A bit simpler -despite Robbo's decent preseason, all the stats point to VVD being better value, so why stick with the Scot?

                      Any input appreciated.

My strategy prioritises getting the captain choices right. I've narrowed down my captains to 3 players so they have to be season-keepers in my squad. Doubling up on City makes it 4. After that, any player that you don't plan on captaining isn't essential. For me, tweaking the system to take Werner off captaincy duties frees me up to play f&f with premium strikers - I can flit between Werner, Martial, Vardy etc if I have the cash.
In your case, a key question is whether you intend to captain Martial. In those games where United have the tastiest fixtures, will you be happy to captain Martial and not have Bruno? For me, I'd rather keep Bruno in my squad all season and bring Martial in when he's on a hot streak.

I wouldn't captain Robbo, so the difference between him and VVD is not so important to me. People have noted Robbo's form pre-season, yet I've seen no one mention how VVD goes up for EVERY set piece. There are plenty goals in the lad for sure.

That team looks great why set yourself on course for WC. You don’t need to use it. Has to be used by GW16 and possible doubles around 18 or 19 it’s a definite hold for me this year.
Branthwaite looks like he is gone as an option and Origi is just pissing cash down the drain.

Is Bowen the best WHU pick for GW1 based on friendly result ? Since Soucek is likely missed the game

Haven't seen him playing but wonder if he passed the eye test ? Some cited him as a budget Robben, not bad for a 6.5 if he can contribute occasional goals

I know fixtures aren't easy but planning to play him GW1, GW3, (GW6 if no better pick) and looks like a smooth sail from GW8 onward

Been on this for two weeks now, though Ziyech injury and Vinagre uncertainty has thrown a curveball! Built around the GW10 WC.

    McCarthy
    TAA - Doherty - Davies - Vinagre
    Aubameyang - Ziyech - Armstrong
    Werner - Kane - Vardy
    Bench: Steer, Reed, Bissouma, 4.0

    GW3: Auba -> KDB, Vardy -> Aguero
If Ziyech injured: Davies -> Keane, Ziyech -> Alli

Vinagre is worth the risk after putting in the research on Marcal, those fixtures are excellent. If it doesn't work out I'll switch to Taylor, no problem.

Charlie Taylor is my choice but read somewhere Pieters/ Bardsley is ahead of him in the friendlies.
Great forward line. I wouldn't start with Ziyech yet.

They have been playing 2 friendlies at a time with some first team player in one game and remaining players in other games, so it's tough to know their nailed fullbacks.

I'm expecting both to start with Pieters as OOP for now.

He will start the season without Maddison right? If he starts the first two games, it will be fine.
        Will become Maddison or Greenwood.

United facing a Palace side GW2 with little match fitness and even less training... then Brighton and after that Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, and Spurs in the next 5. Wouldn't be surprised if they disappointed people.

      1. Flair

So half the starters will have zero match practice, the team will have played less friendlies - if any - than their competitors, and will also have had much less time to train. They should win against Palace and Brighton but a thrashing is unlikely, and then it's a difficult run for the next 5.

True, not easy...although CHE, ARS, TOT at home...bit later MCI home and WOL at home...all that in the first half of the season.
Only Liverpool away in GW19. Very generous fixtures for the first half of the season I would say.

I am really tempted to start with 3.5 in the bank, allowing me to make a quick move for a united player. At the same time, I won’t have any good data on united til after gw3. Best to wait? Or should I gamble and start with martial on the bench to use my transfers elsewhere??

    Difficult one.
1- Werner, Vardy and Kane and Stephens
    2- Werner, Kane/Vardy and Ings
    And Ward-Prowse

Also trying to figure which of the front 3 is most indispensable with all having great fixtures!

Well, in GW2 Werner plays against Liverpool and TOT vs Southampton.
Only Vardy has easier fixture on the paper in the second GW, but very difficult the following week.
Maybe 2nd option and to upgrade Ings to Martial for GW2?
      It's tricky one - isn't it?

Weighing up which Man U player to bring in GW2

With a bit of tinkering the budget options and price structure, I am able to afford both moves

    A) Ings and Alli + 0.5 ITB
    B) Adams and Son + 1.5 ITB

Might be a bit more choice this year, but depending on how many in your league the choice for decent playing Forwards is very limited. Previously you could always get players later on for defence and midfield, but the leftover strikers were useless.

There was a lengthy t.o.t.p post that I glanced at last night before shutting down. It popped up about 10pm and was basically about price structure - in a slightly bizarre sort of way. I said I'd have a read at it this morning but I can't seem to find it now. I'm assuming it was modded as it was considered somewhat blasphemous. Would this be a first?
