Can new Everton signing Allan improve the Toffees’ FPL clean sheet prospects?

Everton completed the signing of Allan (£5.5m) from Napoli a week before the start of the 2020/21 campaign, with the Brazilian putting pen to paper on a three-year deal.

The central midfielder will be reunited with Carlo Ancelotti, who coached him for 18 months in Serie A.

While the subsequent capture of James Rodriguez (£7.5m) has perhaps overshadowed it, Allan’s move to Merseyside is still worthy of note from a Fantasy perspective.

The 29-year-old Brazil international likely won’t attract much interest in Fantasy Premier League himself, it should be said: a total of 12 league goals in a career spanning more than a decade is a strong indicator on that front.

The ex-Napoli man only once registered more than five assists in a single season in his eight-year stay in Serie A, meanwhile.

But it’s his potential impact on other Fantasy assets from Everton that we’ll be examining here, a topic that is perhaps even more pertinent given that Ancelotti’s troops sit near the top of our Season Ticker until December: the Toffees face all three newly promoted clubs and five teams who finished tenth or below in the Premier League last season in the first 11 Gameweeks of the new campaign.

PLAYING STYLE

A combative, all-action central midfielder, Allan was a much-needed capture for Everton given their woes in the middle of the park in 2019/20.

The sale of Idrissa Gueye and long-term absence of Jean-Philippe Gbamin (£5.0m) left the Toffees desperately short of defensive shields last season and Ancelotti’s persistence with a 4-4-2 only added to the problems, with Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.0m), Andre Gomes (£5.5m) and Tom Davies (£5.5m) all failing to convince when they were used in a two-man central midfield.

The immobile Sigurdsson especially isn’t suited to such a deep role in the middle of the park, while it’s no coincidence that Gomes’ form suffered without a Gueye-type anchor alongside him.

It soon became blindingly obvious that reinforcements would be needed in the engine room, especially if Ancelotti was to continue with his preferred formation.

He may not be exactly the same type of player as Gueye but Allan nevertheless fits the bill, with the player himself describing his playing style upon signing for the Toffees:

A strong part of my game is marking and the desire to go in to win absolutely every ball.

That is definitely a differential in my game and I believe with my desire I can put in really good performances to win over the fans.

I’ve been very competitive since I was a child; always wanted to win.

Everything we do in midfield and defence – winning a 50/50, winning a tackle or a one-on-one, clearing the ball – a lot of the time it’s like scoring a goal.

In the game, sometimes these things are very important.

At times it all seems so natural but a tackle, winning a one-on-one, clearing a ball; if it’s quite a tight game, we celebrate as if it’s a goal.

That’s about dedication and giving everything on the pitch.

Ancelotti said of his new recruit, meanwhile:

I think Allan is a fantastic player, he has fantastic energy and quality in midfield. I know him very well and he knows me.

Our supporters will love him because he plays with a lot of passion. He is a fantastic signing for us.

Tactically he is really good. Really strong defensively, he wins a lot of balls. He is aggressive and he is Brazilian, so he is able to do both – [contribute] with the ball and without the ball.

For sure, with Allan we are going to improve.

THE HISTORY

Born in Rio de Janeiro in January 1991, Allan’s senior career began in earnest with Vasco de Gama in his homeland.

After making 51 league appearances (without scoring) for the Brazilian outfit, Allan made the move to Udinese in July 2012.

Swiftly becoming a regular in Francisco Guidolin’s overachieving side, Allan spent three seasons with Il Bianconeri – helping them to a fifth-place finish in the first of them – before Napoli won the hotly contested race for his signature in July 2015.

His first three years in Naples were spent under Maurizio Sarri, with Allan very rarely used at the base of the midfield.

Rather, he was more commonly operating in the sort of role we saw N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) in during Sarri’s season-long stay at Stamford Bridge, playing to the side of a ball-playing ‘regista’ – namely Jorginho (£5.0m) – in a 4-3-3.

His attacking returns rose modestly as a result but, following Ancelotti’s appointment as Sarri’s successor in July 2018, the Brazilian was tasked with a more disciplined role in the central midfield two of a 4-4-2 – a system he may again be operating in on Merseyside.

Allan arrives in England off the back of his worst season in years.

A stop-start campaign that was littered with fitness issues ended badly, with Ancelotti sacked in December 2019, Allan falling out with new coach Gennaro Gattuso and losing his place, and Napoli slumping to their worst finish (seventh) in over a decade.

Just looking at Wilson's good season. He had an insane amount of big chances - and was really wasteful - proportionately he had almost as many big chances as Vardy last time around

        3 fantasy assists

Where he stands out though is the number of assists he made. The Fraser Wilson double act worked both ways. He looks pretty duff as a goal scorer the more I look at it. Question is whether he'd create for anyone at Newcastle

Is going without Liverpool defence worth risking? Their fixtures seem too difficult for a clean sheet

They can get a cleanshhet against anyone, and attacking returns.
That said, I'm only having TAA until week 10 and then I have Van Dijk flagged as a potential transfer to double up.

It's not a huge risk but i wouldn't. You don't own them for clean sheets. You do it for attacking returns so you could miss out on some huge scores from Trent and Robbo.

Worth noting that I didn't think Pool looked great last season and so I went without for a period and it was a rank killer

However the emergence of Chelsea and Utd, possibly Spurs means it is a different landscape.

The main thing I'm saying is don't get sucked into thinking you can automatically safely get away with no Pool just because they're looking poor both ends of the pitch. Could well be a trap

I keep debating it and just sharing the money and getting the points in another way. But then I keep ending up with TAA

Auba, Salah/Mané & Werner seem the most essential out of the 4 players.
Trent frees up so many options in attack. I think Ziyech (with 0.5m extra) will outscore Trent

Let’s say the back four + the GK have an overall Ownership of 105%.

Each clean sheet they get will murder your overall rank.

Each time they wipeout you’re laughing sure, but I’m not convinced early season it’s worth it. I may be wrong.

When Trent gets a cleanie and attacking return, you’ll have 55% of players, 3m or so, score 12 more points than you.

If you find a viable alternative early, then that’s sound.

It's a difficult one. I do think James Rodriguez and Ziyech (priced at 8m) will outscore Trent in the short term

I don't think 4 points will be murdering anyone's rank, especially when you have an alternative set up which could match or beat their score.
I can't understand why people worry about ownership, just get the players within budget who you think will score the most points.
In my case this includes TAA.

        1. Marmalade Forest

Ownership is a funny and complex one that’s hard to communicate clearly.

Let’s say, just for now, to simplify our model, all defenders are priced equally.

Now let’s say Liverpool have a 50% chance of a clean sheet and Newcastle have a 20% chance

In theory, if you want to win FPL, if the Newcastle players are low enough owned, you should gamble and get the Newcastle defence. This means you have a higher chance of finishing first or last. But if you’re not top (100 or so), then it’s not worth writing home about.

If you want to “just do well” you get the players with a higher chance of clean sheet.

Now there is a valid argument that over 38 weeks, 38 “safe bets” will probably do better - but get 38 “risky bets” right and you’ll smash the game.

Robbo and Trent here. The 2 best fullbacks in the league from a team that’s clocked 90+ points 2 seasons in a row. Can’t see any mid at there price points out scoring them personally.

Why are people so fixated on United/City-players? I have no rush changing either Salah or Auba. Then you also have great Chelsea and Spurs assets. Dont understand everyone talking about early WC and Bench Boost. There is plenty of chances to slowly change the team.

My current plan is to hold off on City until week 10 and by week 11 to have KDB, Laporte and Aguero for FUL.
Fixtures don't look great up until then but I always put too much emphasis on fixtures. City are capsble of scoring 5 against anyone.

Auba to KdB stands out in gw 3. But when I look at the Chelsea-team now, there will be plenty of goals and they have good fixtures. Havertz will be last years DeBruyne. Last season everyone complained about Salah. He still picked up the points.

DCL is in limbo at little bit at that price. Think it's either Wilson or a 6 for the cheap striker slots. Fixtures and signings could result in that changing obviously

Above is Richarlison... meh and then you may as well go Ings/Jim by the time you're there

Bloody love my 352 if they’re there and playing. Two of the best picks in the game if they get 30+ games each.

I’m just in trouble when they both get rested in the same week or for a prolonged period. I know they will, but I’m just seeing those names and shirts and potential and saying “you can’t bin them”.

Probaly w/c early if things dont go my way + plus to get city/united in.

Yeah Newcastle need to start off well to get some motivation and they basically have crap choices otherwise

watch the pressers. my guess is 50/50, maybe a sub appearance on for AndyC after he has a run around.

Someone made a good point earlier that if you think a player will do well, but don't be too concerned if it doesn't work out in GW, whether it's a poor fixture or they're not guaranteed to start. In Wilson's case a) I think he'll start and b) think he's a super option at that price

That lot is incoherent. Basically, don't worry about GW1 if you think he's by far and away the best option at that price

    Hows this look?

    McCarthy (4)
    TAA - Dier - Davies (4,4)
    Salah - Auba - Zaha - Alli (4.5)
    Werner - Mitro - Wilson

    0.5itb

Auba/Zaha/Alli can become KdB/Greenwood/Havertz or some combination depending how things go.

Yeah, he's a punt, likely first out if it doesn't go well, for Greenwood with 0.5itb maybe.

I think some people don’t want to pay 8.5m for Ings so they think Che can help ‘cover’ some of this.
Or it’s pure hope for that price point.
Personally I haven’t considered him at all

Haven’t got him but get the appeal. Scored loads of goals in the Championship but not so in the Premiership. Looked like he had found his form again post lockdown. A punt if you like a gamble.

WHU fixtures are dreadful, which isn't such a big deal with Soucek (who could score against anyone from a corner) as it is with Noble.

Right now I'm considering just benching Soucek for GW1.

I don't really need Soucek to play for the first 8 weeks or so, he's a long term investment and a good sub as he could always nick a goal from a corner.
If you get Noble he's a transfer waiting to happen.

Thanks for the info. That's bad news indeed, Soucek has been nailed in my team since the first draft and I'm really struggling to see good alternatives at that price range. Might have to go with it at this point, not looking to rebuild my entire team at this point either.

Check after that. Robbo is going to outscore Greenwood long-term. If your decision is based on a short-term basis, Robbo still wins considering he has the extra game.

probably yeah, both Egan's goals where from corners - almost zero open play threat

Is there something obviously wrong with the following?

                    McCarthy
                    Taa-Bavies-Bellerin-Vinagre-Mitchell
                    Son-Salah-Auba
                    Mitro-Jimi

                    Greenwood - Stephens - Brewster

                    Switch to 442 in GW2 and 352 in GW3 with Son/Auba to Bruno/KDB.

Vinagre and Bellerin are linked with potential transfers. Other than that, looks solid.

I know, but I don't see any alternatives.

I really like the rotation of ARS / WOL.

Gabriel is still isolated apparently and there's no WOL 4.5 left back....

I just don't like the idea of having to spend FTs or take hits to replace players who have moved on, specially considering there's still over a month left in this transfer window, so I'm trying to avoid those players for now. I get your point though.

                                I think I'll chance it in GW1.

                                Vinagre on my bench GW2.

Auba to KDB frees up 0.5, which allows Vinagre to Coady/Boly and by then Gabriel will be free to play too...

only change might be Mitro CallumW, depending on likelihood that CW starts for NEW. but other than that G2G.

Does anyone know if it's Nyland or Steer that comes in for Heaton whilst he's absent please? Thanks.

I believe it's Nyland, but I just can't pick him after watching that Sheffield United howler...

I've heard some say conclusively it's Steer and others Nyland so just thought i'd see what the consensus is on here...perhaps i'll just try find 0.5 somewhere maybe?!!

Thinking of this 433. Thoughts appreciated:

                        McCarthy (Nyland)

                        TAA Davies KWP Robbo (Mitchell)
                        Salah Aubameyang Son (Soucek Bissouma)
                        Mitro Ings C.Wilson

As a 4.5 he's probably your best bet.
