Pro Pundits - Darren

The Southampton players I’m considering for my ‘big-at-the-back’ FPL team

A Fantasy Premier League veteran of 11 years, Darren Wiles has an incredible track record with three top 1k finishes in the last four seasons.

Unusually for me, I was a little late to the Fantasy Football party this season. All while most managers were busy planning their drafts since the launch, I was busy packing up boxes in the process of moving house.

I have been desperate to get started and now that mission has been completed, I have finally been able to start planning for Gameweek 1.

It’s easy to see why moving house is widely regarded as a stressful time in our lives but let me tell you…it’s a walk in the park compared to working out how we’re going to get in the Manchester United and Manchester City assets into our teams for Gameweek 2.

So, after registering my team, assessing the fixtures and diving into some data in the Premium Members Area, I now feel ready and equipped to share my current draft along with a few ideas I have.

Soucek really is key for me as a 5th mid. Ideal to play GW1 and allow say a 352 with Martial on the bench. Then Soucek easy benching till his fixtures turn. Not one 4.5 mid I want to start a game with.

At the moment I've got Bissouma in but it means I start Firmino as a placeholder and likely do the Martial transfer for GW2. But if I get the Soucek green light I will find the 0.5 from somewhere.

Yeah there is just nothing else at 5.0 and under. Ritchie maybe but too much uncertainty on his future plus injury doubt I think.

Yep. There is nothing. I'd get Bissouma as fodder instead if Soucek is out.

Soucek won’t play. He doesn’t have the virus he came in direct contact with someone who now has the virus. Even if he tests negative he will have to isolate due to incubation period

According to Wayne Veysey at The Football Insider, Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli is undergoing a medical at Middlesbrough.

According to Sky Sports, Fulham are in talks with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain about bringing goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to Craven Cottage this summer on a season-long loan.

    McCarthy, (Steer)
    TAA, KWP, Burr, Justin, (Ferguson)
Salah, Auba (C), Havertz, Son, (Bissouma)
    Werner, Mitro, (Brewster)

£1.0m ITB, planning Auba, Son OUT, KDB & Fernandes IN for a hit.

Is Burr Wolves RWB? Saints double up not ideal, better £4.5 option to complement that DF?

Ferguson I know is injured but holding as I've read he's bought to replace AWB, so when fit a playing £4m DF. First two fixtures I wouldn't play him (SOU, man u)

Brewster I expect loan, or I'll change him to free up Liverpool 3rd place.

I'm heavy in MF & light at the back financially, but I think the premium MFs are big hitters & there's value to be found in DF.

DFs fixtures don't exactly dovetail, but from GW2 I'll have 5 penalty takers.

Had Ziyech & Soucek which meant I could play 3,5,2 but concerned they won't play GW1, so now on 4,4,2.

    Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Burr playing was my question! 🙂 Any Wolves fans know please?

Ferguson explained as long term. Saves me a transfer to get him in when fixtures turn & playing £4m DF.

Mitchell short term PvA who's back in training apparently. SOU, man u doesn't scream CS to me.

Read Steer is 2nd GK, Nyland 3rd choice.

Rumors of Vinagre going to Porto & Alex Telles coming to Wolves.

      Justin good short term option.

Personally I'm against picking players with no fixture (Greenwood) with DVB & behaviour he may not start GW 2 but I'm not a Man U fan, so they will know better.

Jeez it’s tough, first draft ... watcha think?

    A - 4.0/Bernardo?, Son, Stephens
    or
    B - 4.5/Webster?, Alli, Soucek

    McCathy Ryan (Rotated)
    Lascalles Walker-Peters, Taylor, TAA, Webster/4.5
    Salah, Auba, Alli, S-M, Soucek
    Mitro Ings Jiménez

    Salah to Fernandes GW2,

I will probably go with that back 7:

    McCarthy/Nyland
    TAA/Davies/Egan/KWP/Mitchell

Wanted to go with Wolves def at first however, their fixtures ain't looking as good as I thought and Egan seems to be a more reasonable pick. Davies looks good value too and KWP as clearly the best 4.5 pick at start of the season.

In mid, I'm sure about Salah/Auba/4.5, that goes with Werner up front - it leaves me 2 mid and 2 forwards spots with 27.5 to spend, what do you think??

I dont know if Fulham attack is going to be good, they won their games with high % football and not sure they will have it all there way translating to the prem which for me, puts a question mark over Mitro.

Its then Adams vs DCL and I share your opinion on DCL, he could be an excellent glue guy you can just hold all season (like Jim)

Think i'm settled, ish... :-/ Comments appreciated. It was Antonio in Adams place until I read about all the unrest in the Hammers camp. Will also be interested to see how much Wilson is priced at for the Toon.

    McCarthy
    TAA / Doherty / Vinagre
    Salah / Aubameyang / Son / Saint-Max
    Werner / Mitro / Adams

    Nyland - Stephens, Justin, Mitchell

    0.5 ITB

for GW 2 - Werner > Martial (Not bothered losing Chelsea asset for Liverpool game, also not bothered about not having City for GW 2 as Wolves away is tough game)
for GW 3 - Aubameyang > KDB or Sterling, time to ponder... (Not bothered losing Arsenal asset for Liverpool game)
for GW 4 - Probably Son > whichever Chelsea mid firing. Hoping Pulisic is back, really like him and think he will shine this year.

looks good, i'm personally starting with Martial (over Werner) and doing the 4.5m guy to Soucek to play GW1 to cover that spot in a 3-5-2. While its inevitable we need to book transfers in I do want to limit it given there will be other fires likely to arise

I have toyed with this idea, just saw quite a bit on here about uncertainty on Soucek being ready for GW1 and also read quite a bit about unrest in West Ham camp, my other half is a west ham fan and is seriously worried about the state of things there, apparently massive fallout after Diangana being sold. I do definitely want Marital tho. Team likely to change 9384 times before Saturday.

Werner > Martial after just one game? Have you seen Chelsea's fixtures after that Liverpool game? Also, Pool might not even be that bad for Werner with his speed in behind.

Team is good overall. Not too much to dislike except Vinagre who will not play with an impending move.

      The prices are certainly favourable.

I mean for e.g if you went without the 11.5+ players and utilised those as your premiums you can build a hell of a squad

How would you rather spend 6.0 and 4.5?

I’m a little bit unstuck in terms investing the difference in defense or midfield, I think strikers is a no go since 4.5 strikers rarely play.

    E.g Doherty & 4.5 mid in a 4-4-2 or a 4.5 def and JWP/Pereira in a 3-5-2.

I think I’m slightly favouring the latter mainly because of Doherty unknown quantity at Spurs plus I prefer 3-5-2 as an fpl formation.

Having said that, Doherty is Doherty so could be worth it, I’m trying to go by if I’m doubt, invest in midfield.

    Thoughts?

assuming Doherty won't get so many shooting chances and will also not get bonus points as much, Pereira is really interesting but he could also be an average pick, who knows. The 4.5 def will undoubtedly be better than the 4.5 mid but won't he be benched most of the time?

Not much in it I don't think, would have definitely said Doh if it was Wolves Doherty, as that was more of a known quantity - Pereira is one of the best punts though imo

Yes but the extra 4.5 def would be benched most of the time but offers that rotation flexibility.
        It’s tough for sure.

I would not pick mid/low priced midfielders till one great option emerges.
      They are all rubbish tbf

Are you referring to a 4.5 mid or 6.0 mid? Or both?

    Nailed it.

    McCarthy / Button
    TAA/VvD/Robbo/Vinagre/Struijk
    Havertz/KdB/Bruno/Soucek/Bissouma
    Werner/Adams/Mitro

A couple to watch upto kick off.

The extra .5 you can get from TAA > Robbo if so handy. I just don't know if I can do it given TAA's ownership.
