Willian dominates in Aubameyang’s first game as FPL midfielder

FULHAM 0-3 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m), Gabriel (£5.0m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)
  • Assists: Willian x3 (£8.0m)
  • Bonus: Gabriel x3, Willian x2, Lacazette x1

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) delivered for his legion of FPL owners with a second-half strike in Arsenal’s Gameweek 1 3-0 win at Fulham.

Despite a quiet first half, the premium midfielder curled home a goal very reminiscent of the strike he netted against Liverpool in the Community Shield last month.

Crucially, it was Aubameyang’s switch in position that made his Gameweek 1 outing satisfactory for his 1.5 million captainers. A combination of a goal and yellow card would have made for just five points last season, but reclassified, it afforded him a total of seven, considering Arsenal kept a clean sheet.

There was some concern over Aubameyang’s positioning in the opening period, which saw him operating rather wide and tracking back a lot. Aubameyang’s defensive duties were a far from ideal development, not just because it initially limited his attacking threat but also because it meant he had to make several “forward’s challenges” on the opposition, earning him a first-half yellow card.

Furthermore, Aubameyang’s opening day goal was severely overshadowed by a surprise monster haul from new signing Willian (£8.0m), who is surely set to become the bandwagon midfielder for Gameweek 2.

The former Chelsea man was not even expected to start at Fulham, having missed most of Arsenal’s pre-season campaign. But he came straight into the side, displacing the in-form Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) and registering a hat-trick of assists. It could have been an even bigger haul for Willian, who hit the post with a free-kick in the 27th minute.

Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) was another unexpected starter, at the expense of Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m), and he opened the season’s scoring in scruffy style. The Frenchman tapped home after Marek Rodak (£4.5m) saved an effort from Willian.

“[Lacazette] is in my plans. He is a player that I like a lot. But he has Eddie [Nketiah] on his back, or next to him I would say, he’s gonna push him and whoever is in better shape is going to play. The same for the rest of the team.” – Mikel Arteta

“It was the best way to start the season. We wanted to win and have a clean sheet and respect what the coach wanted. Everyone is happy. He wants us to be perfect. We worked in the week for this kind of game. We have a lot of big ambitions. I want to help the team to be on top, I know it is my job. I am really happy [at Arsenal]. It is only the press and other people that say I am not. I want to play and win titles. We want to be aggressive with and without the ball and improve every aspect of our game.” – Alexandre Lacazette

Willian was again the provider at the beginning of the second half, with centre-half debutant Gabriel (£5.0m) heading home his corner.

And he bagged a hat-trick of assists when Aubameyang converted his cross-field pass in the second half, the premium midfielder cutting inside Denis Odoi and curling home.

“With Willian I knew the performance would come straight away.” – Mikel Arteta

As a result, Fantasy managers are targeting Fulham’s defence for attacking returns moving forward. They face Leeds next, who exploited Liverpool’s well-documented ongoing defensive issues at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Despite impressing with the ball in spells, the Cottagers were suspect in defence at Saturday lunch-time. There was too much space afforded to an unmarked Lacazette for the first goal, Gabriel rose unchallenged in the box for the second and Aubameyang found it too easy to cut inside the right-back for the third.

Michael Hector (£4.5m) denied the FPL midfielder a brace by clearing an Aubameyang shot off the line in the 79th minute, as the Cottagers struggled to keep the scoreline respectable.

Reflecting on a tough opening day for his side, Scott Parker told the BBC:

The big lesson today is to understand the fine margins in this division mean you can get punished. At this level you have to be clinical and make teams pay and on the flip side the first time they get in our box and they score. I didn’t like the second half as much. The second goal was a poor goal. At that moment we have to understand how crucial it is and I felt we were a little bit weak and accepted it. When you are a team like us that has come from the Championship you can’t let defeat after defeat really cripple you. We are going to lose more than we win but as a team you have to keep learning and developing. It has been a quick turnaround for us. We have brought players in that will improve us and hopefully there will be more. We need to get them up to speed quickly. Set plays are vitally important. We looked a little accepting. There is a realism here. Teams that struggle in this league are teams that let things get to them. We may lose two or three on the bounce, the important thing is to not let defeats get to you.” – Scott Parker

Arsenal admittedly almost conceded instantly after an early error from Gabriel, who had not played a competitive match since March. The defender allowed an Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.0m) back-pass to go by him, which nearly saw Aboubakar Kamara (£5.0m) get on the scoresheet but the FPL midfielder was denied by quick reactions from Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

However, beyond that, it was a relatively routine clean sheet for the Gunners as Arteta continues to transform them at both ends of the field.

While Gabriel will take plenty of headlines for his goal, Arsenal’s shut-out was, in part, earned in no small part by Rob Holding (£4.5m), who operated on the right-hand side of Arteta’s back three and is looking increasingly comfortable there. On the defender and defensive midfield team-mate Mohamed Elneny (unpriced), the Arsenal manager told BT Sport:

“Elneny is a player who has been excellent in training from day one. He’s a player I know well, having played with him. Rob (Holding) is another one is exactly the sort of player we want at the football club. He had a difficult time but he worked really hard in training. He’s playing really well.” – Mikel Arteta

There remains one slight caveat with Arsenal’s defence moving into Gameweek 2. While they were assured at Craven Cottage, Fulham did not offer very much going forward. It was Kamara who started up front for the hosts as popular FPL asset Aleksansdar Mitrovic (£6.0m) found himself on the bench following a slight injury from international duty.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Rodak; Bryan, Ream, Hector, Odoi; Reed, Cairney; Cavaleiro, Onomah (De Cordova-Reid 75′), Kebano (Anguissa 63′); Kamara (Mitrovic 63′).

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno; Tierney, Gabriel, Holding; Maitland-Niles, Xhaka (Ceballos 79′), Elneny, Bellerin; Aubameyang, Lacazette (Nketiah 87′), Willian (Pepe 75′).

Saw the game, West Ham were not terrible IMO, it was an even game, West Ham struck the cross bar couple of times in the first half, they could have easily scored. NU scored with an deflected cross, it was their first shot on target.

Newcastle had like 9 shots in the first half though, that can't be solid defending at all from West Ham. Even if they're dropping deep and allowing long rangers, 9 is insane.

I watched the whole game. For me, the two most important takeaways were Carroll looked to be decent and leading the team, and west ham put their heads down with a few minutes to go. They simply stopped moving and looked as though they’d given up, even before Hendrick scored. They look unmotivated

Newcastle were by far the better team. Don’t count me as biased. That was a 100% improvement over any match last season. Finally Maxi and even Almiron have a CF they can trust up front and play off, while Hendrix was very solid.

Why was the xG for Bandied and Klich shots so low?
Both were shots around the penalty box and from the eye test seemed like players would score that half the time.

Keeper normally stops Klich shot. Keeper normally stops Bamford shot if he isn't chipped.

But in reality Salah's chance seemed much more difficult than Bamford.

Also, such low xG for Leeds seems like either their finishing was world class to get the 3 goals, or Allison was very bad. I don't think either is true.
Allison could have barely saved any of the 3.

              Thanks!
              Have seen this before.
I just can't convince myself that an average striker would score only 6 times out of 100 from the situation Bamford was in.
Probably some factor like goalkeeper being too close might have had a huge impact.

      Big Chances
A situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score, usually in a one on one scenario or from very close range when the ball has a clear path to goal and there is low to moderate pressure on the shooter. Penalties are always considered big chances.

But in the end it's a manual process.

When Liverpool fix up defensively and have easier fixtures, for sure.

        Just looks worrying.

Perhaps downgrading him to a 4.5M defender that you rotate, and spending 3.0M on an attacker might be best.

A lot of great options. Pulisic, Havertz, Rashford, Greenwood, Fernandes, Willian, De Bruyne, Mahrez, Rodriguez, Alli etc.

Trent and Robbo always good options as they both take set pieces but a bit sideways to do TAA>Robertson

I just think Trent performed terribly on both ends of the pitch. Hopefully it was just a one off. Hard to be patient when he's so expensive though.

Do Leeds always play like that? Certainly not the defensive unit they were made up to be, and they scored 3 goals from an xG of 0.27 thanks to some dreadful defending by Liverpool.

Same boat 🙂 worried Ayling owner here

Had rated them at approximately Sheffield’s level defensively, but their first match was more towards Villa, Palace, West Ham and Norwich statistically. An xGc of >3 is horrendous, for context Leicester only managed an xG of approx. 4 in their 9-0 win over Southampton last season.

Thoughts on Willian's performance. I know he's not going to be playing Fulham every week, and he could be a little inconsistent at Chelsea, but I'm tempted when Arsenal get a good run of fixtures.

Yeah, cover is nonsense if it means you are picking 2nd best option over first. This only makes sense if their is budget constraint, otherwise it won't work.

Cover isn’t all nonsense. If you are loading up on a single team and the team as a whole plays like rubbish then all players from that team will blank for you. Hedging your risk by having players from different teams is a smart option imo

GW Rank is same for all guys who score the same points for the GW. I think Overall rank differs from that and players are ordered by other attributes like goals scored, etc...

Was planning on Salah to Bruno Fernandes GW2, but two factors discouraging it now
1- Salah faces kepa now & he put in another all action performance
2- Crystal Palace were much more solid at the back, guaita did very well, it was expected that saints would smash them
Might save & go into GW3 & do a mini WC

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

He faced Kepa in GW37 (at home too rather than away) & got 5 points

His non-penalty XG (0.4) yesterday was lower than last season’s home average (0.5)

He just got his third treble return in his last 50 games thanks to two penalties

He averaged 3.1 points per game last year in away games where Mané started

      Should be interesting!

Did you watch the game? Best I have seen him in 2 years. He earned the first pen with a sot so I dont get why he should lose any credit for that and his all round play was first year level. He was unplayable. But please ignore what I say cause you have your precious stats which you can support whatever preference you already hold in your mind. Enjoy your own personal echo chamber

Ah come on now - let’s not get carried away - “unplayable” - Really?

Talk about getting swept up in the emotion of two pens...

He was far from unplayable imvho - rather he did exactly what he’s been doing for the last 24 months - performed well at home, the lower the opposition the better

As I said here, and many times over the last few weeks - he was a great GW1 captaincy choice because of that fact combined with Bruno & KDB blanking - and as I also said here - these hauls have become few & far between for him

          https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2020/08/26/hunt-for-4-0m-fpl-defender-takes-a-turn-as-ferguson-ruled-out-through-injury/?hc_page=2&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_22295335

He could of course do very well going forwards, he’s a great player - but let’s not get carried away with two pens or lose sight of the fact that this score was pretty much telegraphed

Yep will be selling for Bruno as per the plan

Bruno‘s 38 games in the next 37 gameweeks at 10.5 look good to land somewhere close to Salah’s 37 games in the next 38 gameweeks at 12.0

That’s not the same as saying Salah is a bad pick, Salah is terrible, I’m never going to ever own Salah again and neither should anyone else though

I do have Martial though & he gas an even better home record compared to Bruno, so it's gonna be touch & go regarding Salah to Bruno Fernandes

So no then. Ok first before this gets embarrassing for you, watch the game.

I have watched this guy, every game since he arrived. I know his top level and I know his normal level. Yesterday was far above anything from last season and it has nothing to do with pens, though they cannot be discounted as many expect the average pen count to go up this season.

There are probably twenty different moments from yesterday's game where I thought WOW! He is doing what he used to do. Dropping the shoulder, turning the defender, dribbling messiesque in close spaces, magnificent goal, near post corner flicks and more.

Lower the opposition the better is completely discrediting leads who may well prove to be mid table. How could you know otherwise? You didn't watch the game so you have even less to go off than me. I backed them to surprise this season before the game and I saw nothing to change my mind, thoughts open nature of the game did play into salahs hands which would be a fair counter to my praise.

Chelsea next week though. 5 -3 last time and salah out of form. I think salah could get a haul next week too. Please watch the whole game. You will change your mind

I admire your passionate defence of him and congratulate you on your certainty

I just don’t share it unfortunately - I personally didn’t see a gargantuan difference while watching him compared to the last 50-ish times I’ve watched him, he’s always had that drop of the shoulder for example - it hasn’t gone anywhere, Leeds just let him use it

Yes Leeds played a high line which was always going to give him more space (Nothing new there), and yes he did well at home (Nothing new there) to a lower team (nothing new there)

Again, I’m not saying he was bad (he obviously wasn’t) I’m not saying he’s a bad player (He obviously isn’t), I’m not saying sell him (but I will as that was my plan) - I’m just not getting swept up in the emotion of two penalties

Ok. You keep making it sound like you watched the game without outright confirming it which makes me think you havent watched it. If i am right that you havent watched the game, how could you possibly know how he compared to his last 50 games (how many of those have you watched?)

If I hadn't watched a game and was making a big decision on gw2, I would appreciate help if I may have missed something. That's all I am doing here. If you watched the game and have a good handle on the eye test from last season and come to the same conclusion then fine. We just see things differently. But I think what's happened here is, you have formulated criteria based on 2 seasons evidence, that last nights success fits into perfectly. Next week does not fit in too your pre set criteria so you are predicting a different outcome. All this is a perfectly intelligent way of playing this game by the way. So nothing wrong there. Except. Last seadons salah might have scored 2 pens and hauled 20 points and not shown up at all otherwise. That did not happen last night and I am hopeful of improved away returns particularly against open opposition like chelsea.

All that said, I had the exact same plan as you have and it is still a good plan. Your reasoning is sound.

There are new factors I am considering now:

                1. Is salah back to 2017 form? Too early to say of course but that salah should not be sold at any point. Holding is not a bad idea to find out.

                2. Place looked solid against an attacking team with a makeshift defence. I also watched that game btw. I was not expecting this.

3 united are in bad shape. No pre season. Bruno not yet back from Portugal apparently.

Saving a transfer is not a bad move either.

Of course I watched the game - I had three Liverpool players, one of them captain!

I’m also well aware Salah has the ability to make anyone regret selling, that’s why I have (repeatedly) kept saying it
