Scoutcast Episode 344 – Manchester City and United players on the radar

Joe and Az are joined by 2014/15 Fantasy Premier League winner Simon March as they look ahead to Gameweek 2.

With Manchester City and United’s blank Gameweek 1 over, they are back in action this weekend. But which assets do we bring in and who makes way?

The Scoutcast team reveal how they plan to navigate an upcoming fixture run, with even more explosive heavy hitters vying for their attention.

Everton’s new-look midfield gets the once over from our Scoutcast trio, who are particularly impressed with the addition of 2014 World Cup hero James Rodriguez to orchestrate the Toffees’ attacking play.

He certainly passes the eye test and this latest episode also reveals the underlying statistics behind Everton’s renaissance.

Elsewhere, Chelsea options are considered, ahead of their kind fixture run from Gameweek 3. As a fan of the London side, Simon is particularly insightful about the options to bring in and how their defence may line up.

The crew look back at the lessons learned from their Gameweek 1 performance. Even though Simon shunned a certain expensive Liverpool penalty taker, he looks to have made good use of the spare cash he has available. Will Joe follow Simon’s risky strategy in Gameweek 2? He’s certainly tempted.

Next four fixtures come under scrutiny and the community’s roughest and smoothest scores get an airing.

Meanwhile, Az and Simon reveal a pair of intriguing differentials and the show finishes with the team’s transfer and captaincy plans for the second round of fixtures of 2020/21.

Cengiz Ünder to Leicester looks done, will play RW with Barnes on the left IMO, probably rules out Ricardo moving further up the pitch, and makes Justin a shakier long term FPL prospect.

    Stick or twist?...

    Current team:

    Ryan (Walton)
    TAA - O’Connell - Taylor (KWP, Johnson)
    Salah - Auba (c) - ASM - J Rod (McCarthy)
    Werner - Mitro - Ings

    Possible WC team:
    Martinez (Steer)
TAA - Digne - Taylor (Saiss, Ferguson)
    Salah - Auba - J Rod - Greenwood - ASM
    Jimi - DCL (Brewster)

Both teams will have Auba to KDB next week

It was only a dead leg which he incurred winning the penalty then completed the full 90mins.

He said in his interview afterwards so it's straight from the horses mouth.

With Liverpool playing a high line, Werner pace, Lamps will play him.

He's blatantly first choice striker. I'd be shocked if he doesn't start.

Fair, I'm wondering if Rodrigo takes pens over him once he starts but not worth pondering too much about that now

        1. Boly Would
          • 7 Years

Klich is probably on them until he misses, then it's back to Bamford (or like you say possibly Rodrigo).

That was the case last season. They were both 2/3 on pens.

Harrison for me will create more - he created more chances last season and plenty of those would have been assists were it not Bamford on the end.

I'm punting on DCL, but it's not even a contest if you compare the stats. Richarlison bosses it - albeit from a single game.

You can do a lot with that 1m.

      1. ★Kuntheman★
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Richarlison was everywhere in that game. He almost went out of his way not to score. No way that continues.

Question is whether or not theres a massive difference between a 4.5 mid and a 5.5 mid, a 4.5 defender and a 5.5 defender, etc.

        1. Twisted Saltergater
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 7 months ago

there's a big difference between 4.5m and 5m defenders, never mind 5.5m defenders. With midfielders, maybe not so much.

Not sure if there's any other 5.5 defenders worth evaluating. Already going with a back four of TAA-Digne-Saiss-??? on WC and that's the last slot I'm figuring out.

              I'd add 2 x 4.5m defenders to that back 3.

Hmm that's an interesting call. I can add a 4.5 and a 5.0, actually! Mitchell looked great value at 4.0 for now but I see what you mean.

yeah, no contest. Plays up front for Brazil too so he must show it in training.

Maybe on pens when Siggy isn't on the pitch?

Yeah..that was a typical dcl performance from last season(post restart) that burned me so many times except he got a gaol that any centre back could as well.

Seen nothing from open play from him

FPL tip 101: When buying a 7-8m player, think to yourself, would you be happy owning said player instead of TAA / Robertson.

TAA the only player I’m 100% will not leave my team unless injured

I'm on mixed feelings with him. Yes, sample size n=1 but he was so far back, especially relative to Robertson. Could be Bielsa masterclass, but we also saw signs of Robertson bombing far further ahead in preseason than the RB position

Yeah I watched all our preseason games and that was definitely the case, however he played Hoever/Williams preseason and also experimented with 4231 which meant our fullbacks both sides were a little less involved. Trent wasn’t playing preseason and is just getting back up to speed, he will naturally get forward and be involved in many of our goals and set pieces as always. I know Robbo got the assist this week but generally I don’t like his corners, Trent will take all on the right, they will share corners from the left

Or would be happy to have a forward say DCL and 4.5m defender or Robbo and a 4.5m forward?

At the moment, a 4.5m forward gets you no points where as we all know what Justin did this gameweek.

That said, I'd still take DCL over Robbo in the short term.

So I have both TAA and Robertson but this kind of thinking has been round forever and yet it's never just as simple as that because cheaper defenders also offer way more value than cheaper priced midfielders or forwards. I had to sacrifice Salah in my GW1 team to have such an expensive defence - maybe it pays off long term but I had a pretty bad start because of it.

Right. You probably need two captain choices first and foremost, but once they're picked, you're looking for value picks. It probably doesn't get better than TAA and Robertson for value over the course of a season.

I've just been weighing up DCL + Bruno or Werner + JRod. I probably prefer the latter, but know I'm unlikely to captain Werner until Chelsea are seen to be clicking, where as many people will be captaining Bruno. DCL looks a great option at 7m for the next 3 games at least.

Seen this a comment a few times, but I don't quite agree it's right to compare the two.

Not sure how to put my thoughts into words on this one, but in short, I think the difference between a 4.5mid and 4.5def needs to be also taken into account. You can't just compare a 7m v 7m in any position. Like you need to compare how many more points a 7m player gets to a 4.5m player in that role.

Whilst there's no denying Trent is crazy value (maybe argue under priced), hopefully the above makes some sense? Maybe some math wizards and work something out lol

I do understand what you mean. If you have to play a 4.5m midfielder just so you can have Trent at the back, then that's probably sub-optimal. But you'd want 1 in 2 / 1 in 3 returns over a good run of fixtures from your 7m attacker. It's what's stopping me from choosing JRod until I see some returns from him (probably a bit harsh).

Glad it makes some sense lol.

          It's like, a Trent + a 4.5Forward gets you maybe 250 points. 4.5Def + 7.5Forward is likely getting you 250+

If you're being consistent with your first comments, your team would likely be Trent/Robbo/VVD as you're not getting much better than that in other positions.

But everyone has their plans, before you know it, a supercomputer will be winning the £200k fanteam!

Spot on. Agree with you and F_Ivanovic.

I wrote a program to test this and it holds up. It's all about VORP. The value of all defenders is better than midfield/attack, so whilst you could have a great value player in TAA, you could also have a great value Digne, or a great value Saiss, or a great value Lamptey etc... The replacement players are all great value. Whereas the replacement players in the attacking positions are relatively poor value, so the money goes further in midfield/attack.

Not to say TAA isn't a great option, I personally think he is and will own him for the foreseeable future. It just depends on what you do with the spare cash, there may be a situation where you desperately need some cash to get a key attacker for a whipping boy fixture, so Trent may be the best one to go given the strong defensive alternatives...

I am tempted to captain Marty instead of Auba this week but after getting 80 points in GW1 I guess it's better to consolidate my position and just captain Auba since most people will be doing so this week, right?
