Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 4?

Jan Sienkiewicz was the king of the Fantasy Premier League captaincy in 2019/20, scoring a whopping 657 points from the armband, the second-highest in the whole world. He’s here to help once again, this time assessing the Gameweek 4 options.

For a second consecutive Gameweek, there is no standout favourite for the captaincy – which presents an opportunity for Fantasy Premier League managers to make real strides ahead of the international break.

The pool of armband candidates seems to be growing after an unpredictable start to the season, epitomised by Gameweek 3 which featured several unexpected outcomes.

They included Manchester City’s heavy loss to Leicester City, Chelsea’s struggles at The Hawthorns and Wolves’ capitulation at West Ham United. Such results have created enough caution among Fantasy managers to eradicate the possibility of a runaway favourite captain for Gameweek 4.

It is time to take advantage of that development and use it to get some big green arrows. In this latest Captain Sensible article, we will look into some of the top contenders, examine the defences they are about to face and try to identify which players might be worth avoiding.

As the uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

CAPTAIN POLL

The Fantasy Football Scout Captain Poll for Gameweek 4 sheds some light on the early trends, as Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.1m) are sitting quite comfortably in the top two spots with 22.6% and 19.0% of votes, respectively.

However, those household names account only for 41.6% of the so-called electorate. The majority of our users have decided to choose their captains from a large group of other options.

Perhaps surprisingly, Raúl Jiménez (£8.6m) is currently the third most-popular choice with 10.2%. Despite an underwhelming performance at the London Stadium last week, which featured an own goal, many Fantasy managers are hoping the Mexican can make amends against a struggling Fulham side.

In-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.4m) sits in fourth position, as the midweek hat-trick hero nods just ahead of Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) and Danny Ings (£8.4m). Each of this English strike-force trio gaining over 5.0% of the votes.

The top eight most-popular is closed by Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) and Chelsea’s Timo Werner (£9.4m), with both of those players receiving over 4.0% of votes.

Further down the list, despite delivering in two of the opening three Gameweeks, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.9m) and Sadio Mané (£12.0m) have been considered for the captaincy by only 3% and 2.8% respectively.

With these figures in mind, let’s have a look at some of this week’s most important encounters…

Cant hit Salah vs KDB (C)...2 blanks and again keep switching.

Villa looks solid but SHU and FUL were terrible in attack and Salah should get in positions with high press,KDB should get something too cant see Leeds defending deep.

    Salah or KDB (C)?

Wouldn't it be so nice if the game let you save up 3 or 4 transfers, got 2 spare this week and literally don't want to use any

This, and cap the total number of transfers for the season at say 40 or 45. More strategy, less knee-jerking. if the game loses 1 or 2 million 'ghost' teams then all the better!

Capping transfers is no fun. What if a person finishes his transfers after 20 gameweeks? He would simply lose interest!

Don't get the rush to sell Werner, sure he hasn't look particularly threatening but has a good home game and then people should wait and see what happens in the International break no?

Yes. He had Wba. There is a point when giving time enough is simply enough. We cannot be patient forever. Or perhaps Ville Rönkä could do that some seasons ago.

Agree, the patience was not shipping him out for WBA, luckily is was the right choice as it would have been for Jimi, I did that transfer on Sunday to avoid the price flip and I haven't looked back.

Even if he halls, I'm not going to lose sleep as I think long term, Jimi is going to outscore (I have Ings and Kane as well)

Correct, People lose FPL or left so much behind with the leaders just becuase they wait so much on some particular players in hope that player(s) could bring double digits but once he gets any return by that time its too late.

FPL is a game for aggressors and broad thinkers or out of box thinkers or those who can gamble. It's not a game to play on any fixed template.

If u wana good numbers at the end u should think beyond what these pundits predicts each week..

pretty crap looking team unfortunately mate.
Mitro a waste of time at Wolves.
      Soucek another 2 pointer.
davies at united won't keep a clean sheet and taylor's an outside shot.
All on a week where loads of teams have favourable home games.
I'd probably consider a wildcard soon after the international break but for now best bet is upgrading a 4.5 million defender and getting a Wolves defender in given their fixtures and benching 1 of mitro/soucek

Made my transfer Salah to Sterling this week. Didn’t like Salah as a captain choice for next 3 gameweeks, whereas I’ll captain Sterling this week Leeds away and gw6 West Ham away.

Leaves me 2.3 ITB to move Dier to Robertsonor Ings to Kane (potential captain option).

Would be tempted to do Dier to Robbo for a hit.. It's a gamble but you might have other fires after IB

Ace team, but try to at least get 0.1 off Mitchell rather than burn transfer

Quick poll please: A) Phil Foden & Harry Kane or B) Bruno Fernandez & Neal Maupay?

    Leaning towards A for now..
    Thanks!

B is just so tempting because both Fernandez and Maupay takes penalties..

Howdy DZ, I sure hope the team and the FPL fam can bounce back after that rough week/wild card for me...So I took a hit straight away (signs of a great WC 🙂 )to get the squad below and banked 1.1M for future transfers.. I’m looking at Chelsea mids when they get back to full strength but I’m worried about Foden already and may need to make another double perhaps.... Anyway, what do you all think, go ahead, do t hold back and blast it apart!

Interesting fact of the day: There are 11 forwards who have played all 3 GW's and are averaging more than 5 pts per game so far...
    Vardy (10.7), DCL (10.3), Bamford (9.7), Kane (9.3), Maupay (8.7), Ings (7.3), Richarlison (7.3). Lacazette (7.0), Wilson (6.0), Callum Robinson (5.3), and Mitrovic (5.0). Jiminez isn't far behind at 4.7.
Much more scoring from the forward line than in previous years, over a short sample size so far. Which ones are going to keep it up?

Can’t see any of them keeping it up, pretty inflated with all the pens so far and I think we’ll see less of that

I would say jimi, Richarlison, DCL, Kane and Vardy all shoukd be over 5.0 average over the course of the season. Others may have a tough time keeping it up.

I really like Maupay and think he isn't quite getting the recognition he deserves. Graham Potter is an excellent manager and Brighton deserve more plaudits. They play like they have the first 3 weeks of the season and they will finish well above relegation and be valued where-abouts Southampton are considered (FPL Wise).

A main striker (taking pens) in a side that should be decent all year seems very good to me at 6.5m, even when he does inevitably drop off from 8.7ppg.....
