The Fantasy Flutter: Leeds and City to pay the penalty?

Sponsored by bet365

Every Saturday morning, we combine Fantasy football with a flutter as we put a small wager or two on the weekend fixtures.

Focusing exclusively on the Gameweek 4 matches, we’ll be turning to the vast array of data available in our Premium Members Area to inspire a few sensibly staked bets this weekend.

The odds featured in this piece are all provided by our official sportsbook partner, bet365.

Please gamble responsibly and always remember: when the fun stops, stop.

MISFIRING MAGPIES

Unsurprisingly bottom of the shots on target table this season are Newcastle United, who have mustered only three such efforts – and scored from all of them.

The Magpies were indebted to a controversial penalty award in Gameweek 4 in order for them to salvage a point from their clash with Spurs, while they were comprehensively outplayed by Brighton on home soil a week before that.

Only West Bromwich Albion (0.66) are averaging fewer big chances per match than Newcastle (1.00) among Premier League clubs this season.

Burnley are next up for Steve Bruce’s side, with the Clarets recording clean sheets in both meetings with the Tyneside club in 2019/20.

The return of James Tarkowski should help solidify a backline that hasn’t yet recorded a shut-out this season but who kept 15 of them in the campaign just gone.

The Clarets are 15/4 with bet365 to win to nil, with a 1-0 Burnley victory priced at 8/1.

For some reason, bet365’s Bore Draw Money Back offer sprung to mind when we saw this fixture…

Bore Draw Money Back

Refund for any Soccer game that finishes 0-0 at bet365.

Applies to losing pre-match bets on any Correct Score, Half-Time/Full-Time or Scorecast markets. Bet restrictions and T&Cs apply. New and eligible customers only.

FLOUNDERING FULHAM

Backing against the Premier League whipping boys isn’t big or clever – but who knows, it might be profitable.

Fulham have conceded at least three goals in all three of their Premier League fixtures to date and even did so again in the EFL Cup in midweek, going down 3-0 to Championship side Brentford.

A wounded Wolves outfit are up next for Scott Parker’s beleaguered troops, who will also be without arguably their stand-out performer at the back (an injured Kenny Tete) when they make the trip to Molineux.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side seldom seem to put teams to the sword and have scored four or more goals only once in their 79 Premier League fixtures since promotion was sealed in May 2018.

Three goals is within their grasp, however: they have managed this on a further nine occasions since they came back up from the second tier of English football.

With uncertainty raging over who will start for Santo’s troops this week, there is at least the knowledge that Raul Jimenez is a ‘nailed’ presence in attack.

The Mexican started 37 of Wolves’ 38 league games in 2019/20 and played a part in 50% of the goals that his club scored when he was on the pitch.

A Jimenez goal at any time in a 3-0 win for Wolves over Fulham this weekend is 13/1 with bet365, with the Jimenez anytime/Wolves 3-1 combo available for 18/1.

SPOT-KICK SURRENDERERS

There has been much talk of penalty awards since the 2020/21 campaign got underway, with a whopping 20 of them arriving in the first 28 fixtures of this season – as many as we had in the first nine Gameweeks of 2019/20.

A softening of the handball rule could come into place this weekend but it won’t stop all of the contentious awards; the one that Spurs conceded last weekend, for instance, would still have been given.

A remarkable eight of the 20 penalties that have been awarded have come in matches involving Leeds United and Manchester City – who just happen to meet each other this weekend.

Bet365 are offering 6/4 for any penalty to be awarded in this game, with the Whites 6/1 to score from the spot and City at 5/2.

Backing the sides to miss from 12 yards returns 20/1 and 10/1 respectively.

SUPER SIX?

This seems like one of those Gameweeks that is too good to be true: your FPL team looks great on paper, there is an abundance of captaincy choices and the fixtures are favourable.

It’s at this point where the universe usually intervenes – but that won’t stop us from going for broke with our sixfold of home wins.

All of the above are matches in which the home side is odds-on to win in Gameweek 4 – and an accumulator not only returns 15/1 with bet365, it also comes with a 15% bonus on top of that.

Soccer Accumulator Bonus

Up to 70% bonus for accumulators on a wide range of selected leagues and competitions. Applies to pre-match accumulators of 3+ selections on standard Full Time Result, Both Teams To Score or Result/Both Teams To Score markets only.

Bonus percentage is dependent on number of selections. Bonus capped at £100k and applied to returns. Bet restrictions and T&Cs apply. New and eligible customers only.

Most going with KDB so if you want to play it safe go with him.

Otherwise Salah or Ings could work out...

Jimi will prob score but not usually so explosive.

Well the headache is KDB is not much of a differential as almost everyone has him.

Depends whether you want/need a differential or whether you want to play safe

Well i am behind by 20 pts in my league, would prefer a differential. I know Leeds game would be goals galore due to the way they play. But Mane out with covid makes Salah option attractive and a headache.

Salah does well without Mane historically is what I remember. Maybe because he takes the centre stage

I would argue the opposition has less to think about and can this somed more tile focussing on Salah, could be wrong. Salah has done well without Mane historically, but often against poor teams. I think Villa are half decent this season.

    captain Salah or KDB?

    1. King Kun Ta
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Tricky and having the same doubt....

KDB is playing a offensive and leaky defence but has a lot of competitors for points around him and City not in great form.

Mo is playing a solid defence (not really tested though) and with Mane out he loses a great threat for points.

      Both on pens!

I think looking at the captain poll can be useful. I don't see much point in the endless 'captain A or B' posts that flood here on Saturday morning though.

I find about 95% of what's posted here is pointless. There's a whole army of people who make it their life's goal to hand out player advice. In most cases they don't have any information about the team, the strategy, the intentions. All the stuff you have to consider when making any calls. It's just superficial nonsense projecting their own biases, fears and insecuties onto other managers.

It'll never be encouraged to stop because it's what generates traffic

It's fantastic when you see people pop up with considered, general posts about teams, players, strategies etc that transcend all that tabloid rubbish

I kind of love to talk about footy 🙂
So i enjoy this. Not unlimited RMT yeah but in general discussion about players, teams, FPL teams is what i find best to invest time which is spared after work & family daily.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love the chat. I just value the general discussion about players, teams, matches, strategies, chips etc. Just got no interest in reading managers thinking it's their job to step outside that and actually apply it to others teams

This place reads like the most desperate agony aunt column ever made and there's always 100 agony aunts on tap to dispense banal advice

In the 6 PL games last season when Mané didn’t start or didn’t feature at all and Salah did, the latter got 7 goals 4 assists.

In the 3 games when Salah played and Mané didn’t feature at all, Salah got 4 goals and 2 assists.

Well, looking at average goals/assists per game against non top 6 opposition, it’s 35% above his baseline.

I agree but not sure that he will play all the time, also I think that Antonio has what it takes for the Lei and Spurs, expect him to score against them. If he doesn't then he goes for Brewster and I get Salah, that is the plan.

After Jimmy's good fixtures turn, I am going with him to Antonio again.

        Basically is 2 GW's.

With Antonio if things go south with other players in my team I can keep him and with Che I will be always looking at him as the weak link in the team.

Not really sure in the end it is a difficult call.

I was pretty confident on KDB, then after watching Sterling's performance against Burnley I realized that he could destroy Leeds' high line and they've been very suspect defensively. I was set on Salah->Sterling for the next 3 but then Mane got injured and Mo's stats without him are insane... then I decided this morning to stick with the plan and back my boy Sterling because he's elite, I see hat-trick potential in this game.

I don’t have sterling but for what it’s worth I’d captain him if I did. So I’m on KDB. Leeds can’t defend set pieces either which will help KDB

Yeah, I tend to ignore KDB in my (C) thoughts - 2/37 times last season! - because Kevin Deep Bruyne haunts my dreams and I prefer the goalscorer but he's always a great option. I remember the "captaincy expert" highlighting how Leeds get exposed through the center and Lundstram taking advantage so he can haul for sure. Lots of great options this week, will be exciting/painful to see how each one does.

    Morning all,

Good luck to everyone this GW.

    I currently have:

    Ryan Walton
    Mitchell KWP Taylor TAA Coady
    Salah KDB Soucek Foden Bissouma
    Ings Jimenez Davis

    As well as 4.7 itb

I’ve done a -4 this GW so this is more for next GW, but the plan was to bring in Robbo for Taylor. With the way Liverpool have started playing, as well as their fixtures, makes it seem a no brainer. also leaves me 2.2 itb to upgrade foden to pulisic if need be.

That said I keep on thinking about DCL, having resisted the knee jerk up to now.

Do you think he will keep on scoring at this rate and am would I just be delaying the inevitable by bit getting him now (and be kicking myself that I didn’t bring him in now when he was still only 7.5)?

    Cheers!

DCL is a must, just get him mate. When I ignored Yaya, `Fellaini, Ramsey in similar cases in the past I had the worse seasons ever. See people that ignored Lundstram last year

Ah Yaya, Fellaini...brings back painful memories! I think the DCL voices are getting louder in my head. Not just louder, tbh I’m sold on the necessity of having him. Now just need to plan how to get him and the TAA/robbo double up. Cheers!

What ever the strategy is for getting TAA/robbing double up and DCL ends up being, I think DCL will have to be first one in to avoid any more price increases. Decided against bringing him in when he was 7.3 as felt I was just knee jerking

Lads, finalizing my squad so some final questions

Zaha or Foden? I was no Foden since that allowed Sterling to Salah but now with Salah rise that is not possible so I might as well get Zaha longterm

I'd take a punt on Zaha if you already have Sterling. Up against a leaky Chelsea defence.

    TAA, Vinagre, Justin
    KDB, Bruno, Podence, Soucek
    Werner, DCL, Jimi

Worth a -4pt hit to get Vinagre out? Can afford anyone upto Robertson

Depends who you have on your bench. If not, Digne could be an option going foward.

    .5m itb

    Mccarthy

    Nyland Mitchell Saliba Davies

Bruno to Foden and Martial to Ings or Jimenez this GW.

You should then have enough itb to upgrade one of your 4.5 defenders to Robbo next GW.

I did a similarish move by swapping Werner and Bruno for foden and Jimi, have 4.7 itb now and will get Robbo in next week (already have TAA). Liverpool picking up where they left last season and their fixtures, just seem to good to ignore this.

Tough choice between in a and Jiminez debating holding Bruno and just doing martial to Ings or jimi this week go so much dead weight in the team Ceballos, Saliba, Mitrovic!

If it was just the one transfer I had, I’d get rid of martial and bring in Ings. Although Wolves are playing Fulham, jimi has never struck me as a hat trick player. Next GW Bruno for DCL would be a good move. I’m currently planning how to get DCL and Liverpool defender double up over two weeks

Bruno and DCL are different positions and I'm thinking more Jiminez now as just seen Fulham have 3 injury doubts 1 to a defender in an already terrible defence ha

Yes, Bruno to DCL would require a hit. Hmmm that’s interesting about the Fulham injury news and now adds jimi as potential for captaincy. Not sure an extra option I needed ha has been wracking my brain between KDB and Salah and finally settled on Salah, buuuut...

Lots of debate on salah without mane

Largely i feel this is because salah became the main outlet for pool

With jota as the replacement this won’t necessarily be the case
