Potentially late return for Rodríguez as Salah and Son get international break off

Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) and Son Heung-min (£9.0m) are two key Fantasy Premier League assets who will get some much-needed rest during the international break.

Neither Egypt nor South Korea have any competitive fixtures between now and Gameweek 5, very useful for their owners, or potential new buyers hoping to beat the price rise.

Salah’s compatriots are not involved in any action, South Korea’s ongoing response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is to restrict their international programme only intra-federation friendlies involving home-based players.

Salah’s Liverpool colleagues Sadio Mané (£11.9m) and Xherdan Shaqiri (£6.4m) are also missing the international break, although that is because they are currently self-isolating after positive COVID-19 tests.

Heavy backing for Salah in emerging top 10k FPL managers

An important task for Fantasy managers in the build-up to Gameweek 5 will be to monitor the travelling schedules players on international duty in other continents.

For the first time since the global pandemic began, South American players are flying to their home continent for all-important World Cup qualifiers.

Perhaps the most important of these is James Rodríguez (£7.8m), who will be in Chile playing for Colombia at 01:30 in the early hours of Wednesday, October 14.

After that big match, Everton’s in-form midfielder has to travel back to England in time to turn out for the Toffees in Saturday’s early Gameweek 5 kick-off.

Naturally, this same pressure will apply to Yerry Mina (£5.5m) while Liverpool and Brazil forwards Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) and Richarlison (£8.0m) will face the same around-the-world trip prior to the Merseyside derby.

Meanwhile, ahead of a 15:00 trip to Leicester on Saturday, two key defensive assets at Aston Villa in Emiliano Martínez (£4.6m) and Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) also face late-midweek South American World Cup qualifiers with Argentina and Brazil respectively.

While Mexico and Raúl Jiménez (£8.6m) are back in international action, their travelling schedule is much less gruelling. Both of their matches to be played before Gameweek 5 are taking place in the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, Australia’s fixtures have been postponed, which is good news for Mat Ryan (£4.5m) owners and a lack of matches for the USA allows Christian Pulisic (£8.3m) time to rest up for hosting Southampton in Gameweek 5.

Elsewhere, Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) recently pulled out of the England squad with a minor hamstring injury and two more Premier League players could end up dropping out of Gareth Southgate’s group.

Ben Chilwell (£5.6m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.3m) have had their arrivals at the England training ground delayed in connection with a social gathering that the two players reportedly attended over the weekend. The FA are waiting for the pair to complete last-minute COVID-19 tests.

Dates below are displayed based on UK kick-off times. For example, Brazil and Colombia’s final matches of the international break are to be played on Tuesday, 13th October locally, but these both take place in the early hours of Wednesday, October 14 in the United Kingdom.

From an FPL perspective really good. But our midfield in real life plays with 0 chemistry.

United are not in form. Too expensive for a new player who’s not going to play every game

I can see him staking a claim for taking pens, so @ 8 mill he could be an option. Just have to watch him play a bit and see how he'll be utilized.
He's been involved in 14 league games last season. That's the second lowest number of league games he's played in one season since his time at Palermo back in 06/07.

          @ Pep Roulette
I believe Cavani has showcased his desire to take pens at PSG. I believe he's previosuly had an issue with Neymar concerning who takes pens. Therefore, something similar could come up at United.

Bruno will keep the pens. When Ibrahimovic and Cavani played together at PSG, Ibra was the designated penalty taker, only after he left Cavani was taking them. The issue with Neymar came at the very beginning of Neymar spell at PSG, when penalty duties were somewhat still blurry (first pen of the season). Neymar was (and still is) the penalty taker after that game.

Feel Zaha wins over the next 10 games for me. Forward. On pens. Villa have started well but I don’t believe they’ll keep this up.

I think they will. They have won 3 games in a row and have looked good. Grealish also outscored Zaha last season. I think Grealish will win and it won't be close.

Disagree. Villa will come unstuck soon enough. I think Zaha and Grealish points will be close. Zaha scores more over next 10 for me.

Don’t think Watkins will score consistently & Barkley is not consistent either hence why he’s ended up at Villa & he’s wasted his career so far.

You're a premium member. Go in and do a comparison of Zaha vs Grealish from GW2-4. It's beyond conclusive imo.

You can never say beyond conclusive in football/FPL. Zaha has burnt me before and I might be a little bit tunnelled vision into his possible returns but he could easily outperform Grealish over the next two & suddenly everyone is rushing to get him.

    1) Replace RJames with Regulion/Dallas/Coleman; roll the other trade, play Brewster (FUL)
    2) Podence & Brewster to Bissouma & Watkins, switching to 3-4-3 (have exact money for this); since I'm concerned about over-exposure to Wolves despite their mint fixtures.

Thanks Miguel, I did consider moving immediately for him before his price rise, but since he's in the England squad I didn't want to take the risk. Now I'm 0.1 short of a direct swap. Could still get him if I make 2 trades, of course. One to ponder.

Surprised one of Emerson or Alonso didn't leave but they don't really present much threat to him. James is gonna be an issue as long as Azpi is fit. I made a bit of an error going with him and am thinking of the James to Chilwell move for a -4

I agree; I went with James based on Azpi not starting against Pool - I was absolutely convinced he would, which made me think James was first choice. Sadly another poor decision to add to the long list of poor decisions this season.

Came across a superb article before the season started and I thought I would share it here. If I had not read this article I would have replaced Vardy with Kane for GW3 and missed out on Vardy's Hatrick. Thus far I have been making good decisions this year after reading this. This article is also useful for those who love to chase last weeks points... Hope this helps you guys.

HOW TO WIN AT FANTASY FOOTBALL - A SPORT PSYCHOLOGIST'S GUIDE

    The Halo Effect

This describes how we are unduly influenced by our first experience of a person, which then clouds our future perception of them.

For example, if a player gets a big points haul in the first week of owning, it seems to make sense to think that player is one to keep for a while. And even if he blanks for several weeks after, that early first impression will still be imprinted into our mind. This means that people are more likely to hold on to him for longer than they probably should, instead of transferring him out.

    The Recency Effect

Ever noticed how musicians and bands always play their biggest hits at the end of their concert? That is because they want people leaving the gig on a high.

This is caused by the Recency Effect – while the Halo Effect states that we tend to be heavily influenced by our first experience of someone, the Recency Effect states that we tend to focus disproportionately on the last thing we experienced. So, if a fantasy football player that you don’t own does well in the last game week, your brain will place more evidence on that performance than the one they did two game weeks ago. This often results in people rushing to transfer in “the next big thing” against their better judgment and chasing last week’s points (a classic no-no for fantasy football).

    The Ikea Effect

Named after the famous Swedish self-assembled flat-pack furniture store, this thinking bias states that people tend to place higher value on the things that they create. Essentially, this means that if someone has worked hard on something (i.e. picking their fantasy team) they will cling to the belief that it is good. This is why some people stick with a failing player for too long: the hope that the player will suddenly become good and prove them right outweighs the objective data that says this isn’t likely to happen.

    The Bandwagon Effect

It has been long known in psychology that people are more likely to do something if they think everyone else is also doing it. The faulty thinking here is along the lines of “this many people can’t be wrong”, and “who am I to disagree with what everyone else is saying?”. By abdicating and delegating our thinking to the masses, we don’t involve in any critical thinking of our own. This is where fads, hype and bandwagons thrive. So, instead of transferring in the most popular player that week, it is better to focus on what you think your team needs, and back your gut.

    The Negativity Bias

People tend to remember the negative more than the positive. This is why insults hurt us more than receiving compliments pleases us.

In fantasy football terms, people tend to remember and agonise over the players that they didn’t transfer in, rather than congratulate themselves on the good decisions they made along the way. Doing this can lead to people chasing points and doing too many transfers as a way to rectify previous mistakes rather than focus on the team they already have.

    In Group Favouritism

People tend to like members of their ‘own group’ and dislike members of the ‘out group’. This happens a lot in fantasy football, where fans are more likely to pick (and stick with) players of the team they support, whilst refusing to pick any players from their club’s rivals. This limits the available talent pool you can draw from, and as such, hinders your chances of success.

    Self-serving Bias

This describes the tendency we have to attribute our successes to ourselves and our failures to outside factors. Ever seen someone take the credit for doing well in an exam but blame the poor level of teaching when they do poorly? To be successful in fantasy football, take responsibility for bad selections instead of blaming it on other factors. Holding yourself accountable will help you to change your selections and be more successful the next time.

Yes I did 🙁 However, I am not sure where that fits in. Perhaps remembering the players last performance. No chance of predicting United being so bad and the red card also. I am definitely looking to get Kane in perhaps for the Burnley game they look on fire away from home.. I wont be upset if he hauls vs west ham you cant have everyone. hehe

I think it might fit in from an underlying stats perspective whereby Kane's have been exceptional whereas Vardy's have been pish apart from the penalties. But yeah, I wouldn't have sold Vardy when he had WHM at home for Kane (mun away), regardless of stats.

Thanks for the share Mo. In retrospect, think my choices have been overall positive so far.

      Positives:
      - Got salah over mane, mane had covid
      - pondered over downgrading robbo to get thiago in midfield. Didn’t do it. (Thiago had covid)
      - considered getting soucek out for a hit to podence to prevent price drop. Didn’t do it, soucek didn’t drop, podence injured
-considered taking a hit to get rid of son early but kept as I had him early on and wouldn’t lose value. Hauled against United

      Negatives:
      - took out James for foden 2 weeks back. Foden blanked, James braced 🙁
      - capt trent over salah last week 🙁

Overall still not too shabby putting it into perspective 🙂

"So, instead of transferring in the most popular player that week, it is better to focus on what you think your team needs, and back your gut"

this is exactly what i'm trying to do more of this year, for example i have the exact cash to swap Havertz to Son, but i already used my transfers so it would be for a hit, also i already have Kane, and Chelsea probably have the better fixture anyway, so what's the rush ? Son will still be there in the following weeks if he truly does become essential, he'll just be a bit more expensive

Yes spot on. Also once Pulisic and Ziyech are back Havertz and Werner will be great picks as defenders would not know who to mark! Havertz needs space to make those runs..

    B) Son + Brewster

      B) - but only because I'm taking a leap of faith and saying that Brewster is gunna be a great pick (for his price).

Kane v Son is much of a muchness, but Son is much better value

Hey camzy, do you think bale will be fit? If you think he’s fit, I’d say go for kane. He’d be chief supplier to son and bale, and I don’t think Jose rests him

Not going to touch Bale until he starts a game and plays the full 90. That's going to be a few weeks from now I reckon.

Son in FPL is essential when fit imo. He's playing as a second striker this season and is 9.0m.

Mahrez to Son for a hit (-4) ? or give mahrez another chance?or someone else?

West ham seems solid.. not sure Son can give big points

I doubt that Son will score well against WHam as well. A goal, or maybe an assist will be a good return.

But, I still got Son in this week. And, barring injury he's in my team for the medium term at least now

Very doubtful I'd say. It's Everton's biggest game of the season and he's a key player already.

Maybe come off at 60mins or so though, depending how the game is going.

He plays in Santiago, Chile on 14 Oct and then has a game vs Liverpool on 17 Oct at midday. No doubt they will charter a direct flight (15 hours) for him on the 15 Oct but can' see him being at his absolute best during the match. Carlo even suggested he could have to bench him.

Ancelotti on James Rodriguez, who will play for Colombia in the early hours of the Wednesday before #GW5: "He doesn't have a lot of time to recover, I hope he can recover well for the game against Liverpool. If he doesn't - he's going on the bench!"

Yeah - no point booking in a transfer if you want him long term

Nothing that a line of Colombian marching powder won't sort out.

    Thoughts on Zaha?

    Good fixture run coming.

    Tossing between Zaha or Grealish

One of those players who has never paid off for me when I've owned him. Too unpredictable I think.
Grealish could be a good one to jump on early.

    TAA & Podence > Lamptey & Son

Starting to feel like a no-brainer...
I have Robbo & Kane. What do we think?
