Brewster not immediately drafted into Sheffield United starting line-up

Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) is on the Sheffield United bench for the Blades’ home clash with Fulham this afternoon.

The budget forward was brought in by over 175,000 managers ahead of Gameweek 5 but has to settle for a place in Chris Wilder’s matchday squad.

On the decision to leave Brewster out of the starting line-up, the manager explained:

He was close, it was a tough decision. He trained well but it was a tight decision. He’ll play a part and it’s great to get him in the building. We’re not only here for results now, we’re building as well for the club’s future.

Sheffield United have managed just one goal so far this season, a David McGoldrick (£5.4m) strike against Arsenal during a 2-1 defeat in Gameweek 4.

The Ireland striker and his international colleague John Egan (£4.9m) both start at Bramall Lane. McGoldrick was an injury doubt, while centre-half Egan has been cleared to play after being noted as a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case in the Ireland squad.

Another Irishman in Enda Stevens (£5.4m) sees a positional change to left centre-back, meaning budget defender Jack Robinson (£4.4m) only makes the bench.

That sees a start for summer signing Max Lowe (£4.4m) at left wing-back, while Oliver Norwood (£4.8m) returns to the starting line-up in midfield.

McGoldrick is joined up front by Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) in Wilder’s familiar 3-5-2 system, with £4.5m midfielder Oliver Burke – who had been carrying a knock – dropping to the bench

Fulham have scored three times so far this season, all during a 4-3 defeat to Leeds in GW2, with both sides desperate for a win at Bramall Lane today following four consecutive defeats apiece.

New signings Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) and Chelsea loanee Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.9m) both come straight into Scott Parker’s XI.

Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) also earns a starting spot after impressing on his off-the-bench debut in GW4 as the Cottagers lost 1-0 to Wolves.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.9m) again leads the Fulham line, while Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) is favoured at left-back over Joe Bryan (£4.9m). Michael Hector (£4.4m) is not part of the matchday 18.

Joachim Andersen (£4.5m), another new centre-back addition at Craven Cottage, is set for a spell on the treatment table with damaged ankle ligaments.

On the defender and other injury issues, Scott Parker explained:

We’ve had some pretty bad news with Andersen, who’s obviously only just come into the football club. He’s damaged his ankle in training so he’ll be out for the foreseeable future.

I wouldn’t want to put an actual timescale on it but it’s going to be some weeks. It’s disappointing of course, because we had him for two days, we saw his quality, but we’re going to be without him now for a little time.

Hopefully we’ll get him right, get him rehabbed, and get him back as part of the team.

Kenny Tete‘s still struggling and will be out for a few weeks. Mario Lemina‘s back, he’s been training now for 10 days. Harrison Reed is getting there, but the weekend will come too early for him.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; Stevens, Egan, Basham; Lowe, Lundstram, Norwood, Berge, Baldock; McGoldrick, McBurnie.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Robinson, Ream, Adarabioyo, Aina; Cairney, Anguissa; Cavaleiro, Loftus-Cheek, Lookman; Mitrovic.

Asked who the most overrated player in the PL was on the previous page....

Firmino was the answer I was looking to see. A player who has managed to convince people it isn't his job to score goals despite having had more big chances last year than the likes of Aguero, Kane, Ings, Jimenez, Martial and Son.

The only striker who underperformed their xG by more than Firmino last year was the inestimable David McGoldrick. A staggering underperformance from a supposedly top class player. It boggles my mind that he escapes criticism so easily on that front, despite having been capable of a 27 goal season at his peak for Liverpool.

This. You can't look at a player in isolation as some naive abusers of stats do. He's an integral cog in a well-oiled machine.

And his role in that machine is one that sees him get more chances to score than most of the league's top strikers, which he repeatedly spurns.

You are joking, surely. Cleverley wasn't expected to be the foil 90 minutes a match for two other world class strikers

Next you'll be claiming Martial is a better player

If you don't understand his place, his various qualities and the quality of job he does then I suspect either you don't watch football or your brain has been corroded by fantasy football

Pep would take your hand off to have Firmino doing Kuns job the last few years

My point was that winning the league doesn't mean there aren't things in the team that could be improved. And a striker whose finishing wasn't comparable to that of David McGoldrick would be a *definite* improvement.

The bottom line is that it should be in no way acceptable for him to be *that* poor a goalscorer, regardless of what else he does.

I'm sorry but your stats are a rubbish description of what is a far more complex picture and your solution to just 'get someone who will score more goals' because that crappy statistical measure is just very funny indeed.

I didn't actually say that though.

He should be scoring more goals than he is. Nothing else that complicates the picture changes that. The team provide him with great chances, he wastes them, that's a bad thing that should be pointed out far more often than it is.

So your case for Firmino being the 'most overrated player' is essentially that based on xg he should have scored several more goals.

Doesn't that just amount to Firmino going through a slightly dry season in front of goal, losing a bit of confidence, being unlucky, or suffering a bit of a decline

And yet he remains one of the most astute players in league and one of 3 or 4 stars in that team around which the planets circulate

It's a very very weak argument for someone being overrated at all, let alone the MOST

This is a bit harsh, he's been off form for a while running around and pressing doesn't make up for that. And he does spurn many chances that are created for him

I see his value to the team and what he brings and on form he's a delight and genuinely class, he has dipped in form for me though

So when other players get chances it's down to Firmino but when Firmino gets chances it's also down to Firmino?

I've seen more than enough of Liverpool to know that there are actually quite a few players who contribute to the team's attack. He isn't making the many chances he wastes on his own.

I think it's one of those where he facilitates the goals of others, or at least appears to.
As the team is "usually" winning comfortably, his lack of goals isn't missed.
Maybe it's a position that needs an upgrade, but would a better finisher cause the team dynamic to suffer?
Very much a non starter from a ffball perspective, but, maybe like Henderson, enables other players to outperform

But you are seeing a problem where there isn't one. They have two class goalscorers. It is more productive to have a player who understands how to bring them into the game with their own play on and off the ball. In that respect he is more important than mane or salah

I didn't say he was terrible. I said he was overrated.

The standard assessment of Firmino from Liverpool fans is that his role is to help others, which implies creating chances for others.

Yet the stats show that he actually gets better chances himself than most of the league's top strikers. He's just *extremely* wasteful. So it has nothing to do with the role he plays, je's just a poor finisher.

I don't think there is anyone (or at least many) claiming that he is a good finisher. His main role in the team is to create chances and open up space for Salah and Mane and he is very good at performing his main role and thus useful to the team.

Firmino regularly gets described as "world class". Here's his manager doing so earlier in the year:

          https://www.goal.com/en-om/news/firmino-world-class-stats-dont-matter-klopp-liverpool/ba8dxcqiawub1d3ugj3cfavvz

And you don't have to be described as world class to be overrated.

How did I dismiss the comments about Pogba? He's been awful for United and is overrated.

But he's regularly described as being overrated. United fans are currently calling for him to be dropped such is his poor form.

Whereas in Firmino's case a narrative has been constructed to only focus on his positives, as if his style of play means he shouldn't be expected to score goals. When in reality his style of play sees him get great chances to score goals which he repeatedly wastes, without his reputations seemingly being impacted at all.

Ole calls Pogba worldclass, which is no different to Klopp calling Firmino worldclass. You arent comparing like for like. Currently you are making the argument fit rather than being objective.

You would have more luck working out which player has the most incorrect rating on fifa.

I didn't claim that nobody describes Pogba as world class though, whereas you did claim that about Firmino. That was the only reason I brought up the Klopp quote. You were actively underplaying how "rated" he is.

Whereas at no point did I say Pogba *wasn't* massively overrated. It's a comparison someone else made, not me.

The key point with Firmino is that there is a prevalent counter-argument which dismissed his goalscoring as irrelevant, as if his style play is what's causing the lack of goals. When, clearly, it isn't. That weird counter-argument doesn't exist for other players, which is why (imo) he notably overrated.

You seem to be getting mostly replies that disagree with you and I think it is because this needs to be looked at from two sides.

He obviously is very very good at what he does for the TEAM during Liverpool games and Mane and Salah definitely benefit and score more goals because of what Firmino does.

Where you could argue that Firmino isn't actually good is how many of his own chances, separate from the role of supporting Mane and Salah, does he actually score and how many of the misses should he be expected to score.

You could have a player who does the first description who also does the second. So if Firmino is poor at the second, you could argue he is overrated. He definitely isn't overrated as part of the whole functioning Liverpool team though

If his lack of goals were down to his style of play then he wouldn't be getting such fantastic chances. He is getting those fantastic chances though, which tells us that his poor goalscoring isn't down to his style of play. It's down to him fluffing his chances over and over again. No matter how good he is at other aspects of the game, it doesn't change the fact that he should be criticized for such shocking underformance elsewhere.

And, again, I can't help but notice how touchy you are. Hopefully it's something you grow out of once you reach puberty.

This match has got 0-0 snoozefest written all over it. Anyone in the UK coughed up 15 quid for it??

3rd game in a row this weekend I have zero playing players. Having watched every game yesterday so far I think I'll give this one a miss!

Key thing with Brewster to my mind is less how well he does (though that would certainly be a bonus) and more the fact that him and Soucek make 3-5-2 with quite a few big hitters an extremely viable formation as West Ham's fixtures clear.

agreed, but there is such value up top in the 6+ mill price that I would maybe prefer one of them starting in a 343

Takes up a valuable forward slot and that’s where the value is so far this season. I see him more as a blocker rather than a viable asset. I could be wrong if he earns a starting spot and actually looks good, however, playing for an impotent attack in a relegation quality squad, I can’t see him being an option for my team

There are certainly a lot of options up front but I'm not convinced so many of the best options are in that position that two slots wouldn't do.

wait til aguero starts firing then you want 3 strikers. Aguero,DCL and Watkins/Antonio/etc for value

Debatable whether Aguero sans penalties will be a better pick than KDB/Sterling when both are fit.

When you've got Watkins at 5.9 who could do some serious damage, it seems a false economy in my book.

You still have two striker spots to fill with whoever you like.

I see a *lot* of options in midfield too though. Two Liv mids, at least two City mids, United mids when they hit form, Son & Bale, Grealish, James, Chelsea mids, etc.

No, but ive seen Podence play (who I benched to play Brewster). Fulham at home worth a go, but he'll be nothing other than a benchwarmer for me. Imagine a lot of people did and are thinking the same.

I have seen him scoring, so yes 😉 It is impossible to start 8 attackers, so when there is a possibility to have 4.5 who is likely going to be regular starter, it is ok for me.

prefer Watkins & 4.5 mid on my bench than a 6 mill mid and Brewster on my bench ... but if Brewster starts maybe he is worth it in a 343 to free up cash

not trained much with the team, not match fit, hasn’t played a competitive match since July, doesn’t know their systems, young, inexperienced, never played in a 2 man striker partnership, poor all round game
