Why Wilder didn’t start Brewster as Mitrovic suffers nightmare outing

SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-1 FULHAM

  • Goals: Billy Sharp (£5.8m) | Ademola Lookman (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Jack Robinson (£4.4m)
  • Bonus: Lookman x3, Sharp x2, Chris Basham (£4.9m) x2

Sunday afternoon was one to forget for Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.9m) and his FPL owners.

The Serbia striker missed a penalty after 57 minutes, skimming the crossbar with Aaron Ramsdale (£4.9m) well beaten.

The forward then managed to foul Jack Robinson (£4.4m) – who had earlier conceded a penalty – during a melee in the Fulham area.

That passage of play led to a Tom Cairney (£4.9m) chance on goal but after the VAR reviewed Mitrovic’s challenge on the Blades substitute, a spot-kick was awarded.

Billy Sharp (£5.8m) made no mistake with his penalty, firing home to earn the home side a point.

It went from bad to worse for Mitrovic in added time as the Fulham hitman headed wide twice from close range following deliveries by the impressive Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) and Cairney.

On the striker, Fulham boss Scott Parker commented:

It was painful for him but he has earned the right [to take the penalty]. Today wasn’t his day but he has scored and assisted a lot of goals. This is someone we owe a lot to. He will dust himself down and go again.

LOOKMAN PASSES EYE TEST

Having impressed from the bench in Gameweek 4, Lookman put in another eye-catching performance against Sheffield United.

It was his goal after 77 minutes that gave Fulham the lead. The winger, having received the ball from Cairney, lost it again but persevered to beat a couple of Sheffield United defenders before hammering an effort past Ramsdale from inside the box.

At just £5.0m, Lookman might be a player worthy of addition to FPL watchlists with Fulham’s fixture list looking decent until Gameweek 11.

BREWSTER LEFT TO SIMMER

Chris Wilder decided not to make immediate use of Rhian Brewster (£4.5m), with the former Liverpool striker named on the bench for Sunday’s bottom-of-the-table clash.

The budget forward entered the fray after 63 minutes and immediately made an impact by setting up a shooting opportunity for Enda Stevens (£5.4m).

The Irishman, who moved back to his regular wing-back berth after Robinson replaced the injured Max Lowe (£4.4m), attempted to return the ball to Brewster when he might have been better off having an effort on goal.

Apart from that moment, Brewster was unable to impact on proceedings from a Fantasy perspective but the profligacy of Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) could mean that the budget FPL option will make Chris Wilder’s XI in Gameweek 6.

On the new signing, the Blades boss said:

It was a big decision before whether to start him. I believed he only had 50 minutes in him so I thought the best way to introduce him would be off the bench, as we did, and get his first minutes as a Sheffield United player.

It’s difficult because younger players get caught up in between the under 23s and the first team and sometimes maybe don’t get up to speed as quickly as they would if they were part of the first team.

John Fleck (£5.8m) was due to be part of the starting team against Fulham but a back injury picked up on Scotland duty will sideline the midfielder for a period.

Wilder explained:

John was due to start today but unfortunately he has picked up an injury and is out for four to six weeks.

SPURNING CHANCES

McBurnie was the chief protagonist in a dominant first-half display from Sheffield United but not in the manner the Scotland international might have hoped.

Having already headed wide from a Chris Basham (£4.9m) cross after 10 minutes, the forward spurned a glorious opportunity as he nodded a Basham delivery at Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) from six yards out.

McBurnie then failed to get a decisive touch on a low Stevens cross, putting it across the Fulham goalkeeper rather than towards the net.

On his team’s display, Wilder commented:

Delighted to get a result, disappointed we didn’t come in at half time upping the game. We were a little bit more like our old selves in the first half and had control of the game.

But we were not like our old selves in the second half. First half us, they dominated the second half.

It is a bit of a battle at the moment, a bit of a grind but delighted to get something out of the game.

Along with McBurnie’s missed chances, the Blades also had a goal ruled out in the first half for offside after Fulham debutant Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) turned a Sander Berge (£5.0m) cross into his own net.

Wilder’s opposite number Parker also recognised that it was the cliched ‘game of two halves’ at Bramall Lane and believes that Fulham are turning a corner in terms of performance, saying:

I thought in the second-half performance we were exceptional. In the first half, we came with a bit of plan, we needed to tinker things at half time and the players responded very well.

Second half I saw a dynamic team, a team that could create chances and I was pleased overall in that sense. Still plenty of learning and plenty of improvement to do. A young team with young players coming in and making their debuts. Overall pleased.

Playing against a very well-drilled side here and their formation can cause you problems. We tried to nullify their threat. On the counter-attacking side, I thought we looked deadly. Pleased with that but probably need to be a bit more clinical in these moments.

The team is going in the right direction, not just today. The last performance as well was very pleasing. From where we were in the first three games where we had our struggles we appear to be coming out of that and pushing in the right direction.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; Stevens, Egan, Basham (Sharp 81′); Lowe (J Robinson 19′), Lundstram, Norwood, Berge, Baldock; McGoldrick (Brewster 63′), McBurnie.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Robinson, Ream, Adarabioyo, Aina; Cairney, Anguissa; Lookman, Loftus-Cheek (Lemina 81′), Cavaleiro; Mitrovic.

    This seem a good option?

TAA, Pondence + Jiminez to Konsa, Zaha and Kane for -4pts

Im still not sure about Zaha as an FPL prospect over Grealish. Just do TAA/Jiminez to Konsa/Kane. Do the other transfer next week

TAA is sacred in this forum, so many will be against this. But I'd do it. Kane is in incredible form right now and is much more important to own than TAA.

Majority won't say yes, coz TAA is held as high as Messi Ronaldo here
But pool defence without alisson & VVD is shite, so dependant on TAA attacking returns only

People holding on waiting for a Trent explosion when so many other attacking players are exploding every week...

No question our defence is more shaky now.

Played Brewster knowing the risk, but it’s nice to have him there as a half decent backup whenever required.

Wouldn’t put it past him to score against his old club next weekend!

He’s an unproven premier league striker in a team that doesn’t score a lot of goals. He’s glamorous fodder for now.

Have Son too. But yeah, thought about exact the same moves before I pressed the button. If you don’t really feel the urgency to bring Kane in these moves should work imo. I think Kane’s form is too good to ignore though, he’s on fire and not owning him over the next 3 could hurt you.

But I don't pay attention to it really. I may make an early transfer if I know someone is about to rise/drop but only if there are no more fixtures to be played for the players I'm bringing in.

How does this WC look? Players* are undecided and not sure about.

Foden could be downgraded to Bissouma and Brewster to Wilson as a placeholder for Antonio when the WHU fixtures turn.

Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking a WHU defender either Masuaka or Balbuena. Another option is Ayling and rotate with Dallas when he plays in Midfield. I think Ayling is the better option when both play full back

I like the Foden shout and a (potentially) playing £4.5m forward is real nice back up to have.

However its a real tight shout between that and Wilson or Maupay instead so I think you need to go with your gut.

I wc'ed last week and went Pulisic over Foden with Brewster and Regulion over Robbo as another option. Pretty happy despite Pulisic blank.

As a Salah non owner, i got away with it this week as my alternative was Raheem but i need Salah over the next two for captaincy.
Would have to do Sterling -> Salah this week which could potentially going wrong but seems like a sound move as you cant have them all i guess, thoughts?

You could go aggressive and differential by keeping Sterling and captain Spurs. Obviously that is risky when majority will captain Salah

I think so. The upside of having Kane is way higher than owning TAA. Especially when you consider than he will be captain for some weeks.

Chilwell looks like he will get plenty attacking points as well.

Those who have double Liverpool defense must surely be thinking of ditching that idea now that VVD is out long term?

There still will be plenty attacking points for TAA/Robbo but I would imagine there won't be nowhere near as many clean sheets.

Barnes is a truly garbage option. The greatest proof that stats are worthless without the eye test. I personally don't even rate him but found his stats hard to ignore. If it weren't for stats he wouldn't be anywhere near my team.

Lesson learned; use stats as a helpful tool but don't let them override gut feeling and eye test completely.

I never seemed to own him last season when he was doing well and looks like that's continued on to this season.

I find it interesting that the FFS captain poll had Salah top.

And yet in my competitive mini leagues cumulatively:

                      Salah - 17
                      Son - 31
                      Kane - 16

Seems that Son was really the poll leader after all.

Think there's a website out there where you can write a few simple keywords and it finds you the answer...

Reece James out for Konsa to double on Villa defence?
6 home games in next 10 matches. (LEE,SOU, BHA, NEW, BUR, CRY) and the away trips (ars, whu, wol, wba) are against teams who have struggled offensively too.

Not keen on double Villa DF personally.

But, it's definitely a viable move that could pay off handsomely if Villa can keep their early season form

V similar to me but I prefer maupay over Watkins and Wolves defence over Chilwell. I’m not convinced chelsea will ever keep a clean sheet

I’m weighing up Maupay vs Watkins. Why do you prefer Maupay?

I’ll be watching Semedo carefully tonight and may switch to him. All of Chelsea’s attack has gone through a Chilwell since he came into the team. I think once Mendy returns Chelsea will keep clean sheets.

Looks good, can use the money itb to upgrade Watkins to Antonio GW8 for maybe even get Maupay now.

Getting Antonio is the plan, unless Watkins looks really good. I’m 50/50 on Maupay vs Watkins.

I also like having the extra cash as insurance in the sense that it allows me to go Robbo to TAA. I think Robbo looks better now but want the option of backing out.

really like it basically the same as my WC from last week (I went pulisic/Reguillon instead of Lamptey/Rodriguez)

Villa fan so slightly biased, Watkins should offer decent returns as plenty of creativity around him and is a finisher, 3 home games in next 4 all look great and confience in squad must be sky high

This season has been beyond bizarre. And, I'm not just saying that because I'm doing cr@p. I did poorly last season too 🙂

I only WCed a few weeks ago and I've already took a hit last week and I'm looking at a -8 to sort out my team going into next GW.

                      ................Martinez
                      ......TAA - Lamptey - Saiss
                      Salah - Son - Pulisic - Barnes - Podence
                      ..............Jimi - DCL
Bench: Brewster - Justin - Mitchell
                      1FT & 3.7 ITB

Do you think these are decent transfers?

                      Jimi, Barnes & Podence > Kane, Barkley & J-Rod (-8)

I know many won't like the -8, which is a fair point. But, what do you think of the transfers themselves (kind of disregarding the -8 a little bit)?

I prefer to being in Grealish. Instead of J-Rod I would rather have a forward like Watkins with good fixtures.

youll probably captain salah,so kane not a great upside, barkley is a career nightmare so just avoid leaving podence to hames for free ,your still in good shape
