What Fulham defeat tells us about West Brom defence ahead of Spurs clash

Fulham 2-0 West Brom

  • Goals: Bobby De Cordova-Reid (£5.3m), Ola Aina (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Aleksandar Mitrovic x2 (£5.8m)
  • Bonus points: Aina x3, De Cordova-Reid x2, Antonee Robinson x1 (£4.4m)

BAG ‘EM AND TAG ‘EM

Any concerns that West Bromwich Albion’s defence had improved enough to cause Spurs problems in Gameweek 8 were dissipated in a 2-0 defeat to Fulham on Monday night.

After conceding 13 goals in the first four matches of the season, Slaven Bilic tweaked the Baggies’ backline from a back-five to a back-four, adding Branislav Ivanović (£4.5m) into the mix.

There were initial signs of recovery as they kept their first clean sheet and conceded just once in the Serbian’s first two matches for the club.

However, that progress was dashed in Gameweek 7 as a poor Fulham side made light work of emerging 2-0 winners at Craven Cottage on Monday night.

That was only the second time this season that Scott Parker’s men had found the net more than once in a match and they also bested a number of their underlying statistics against West Brom.

As you can see from the comparison above, on Monday night, Fulham registered superior figures for shots, big chances, shots on target, accuracy rate and goal conversion in comparison to their averages between Gameweeks 1 and 6. That certainly suggests the Baggies are not quite as capable of restricting sides as they indicated in Gameweeks 5 and 6.

FALSE DAWN

While West Brom have certainly conceded fewer goals since Ivanović’s debut, and improved some defensive underlying statistics, they have by no means become watertight.

We must remember that the last three matches have pitted them against weaker opposition in Burnley, Brighton and Fulham while Southampton (two goals), Chelsea (three), Everton (five) and Leicester (three) had no problems dismantling the Baggies.

What is also of interest, is one area of West Brom’s team that has been a persistent problem, regardless of opposition: their right-hand flank.

The maps of key passes conceded by West Brom this season, split across the two different defence systems they have used, show a concentration on their right-hand side.

Between Gameweeks 1 and 6, every assist they gave up came from that direction and while that has not continued to be the case from Gameweek 5 onwards, you can see that they are still giving up more chances created there than anywhere else.

Crucially, a quick look back to the defence comparison table shows you that, despite conceding fewer goals since a switch to a back-four, their chances conceded from the right per game has risen from 10.8 to 14.0.

That is rather encouraging for those taking Spurs’ left-sided assets Son Heung-min (£9.6m) and Sergio Reguilón (£5.6m) into Gameweek 8.

Indeed, one of Fulham’s goals scored on Monday night looked as if it had been lifted straight from Jose Mourinho’s playbook this season.

Left-back Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) pressed into advanced space, crossing for Aleksandar Mitrović (£5.8m) who nodded back across goal for Bobby De Cordova-Reid (£5.3m) to nip in at the back post and head home.

ADEMOLA BOOKMAN

Despite picking up just one point thanks to a blank and a yellow card, Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) continues to impress for Fulham.

Utilising his pace in wide areas, the former Everton man produced an all-round performance, shooting and setting up his team-mates alike; of course, helped by West Brom’s brittle right-hand side.

The fixtures remain unfavourable for Fulham, with West Ham (away), Everton (home), Leicester (away) and Manchester City (away) their next four opponents.

However, it is worth keeping the player on our radars considering his price.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; A Robinson, Adarabioyo, Andersen, Aina; Lemina (Reed 46′), Zambo Anguissa; Lookman (Bryan 90′), Cairney, De Cordova-Reid (Cavaleiro 85′); Mitrović.

West Bromwich Albion XI (4-1-4-1): Johnstone; C Townsend, Ajayi, Ivanović, Furlong; Krovinović (M Phillips 70′); Diangana, Gallagher, Livermore (Sawyers 56′), M Pereira (C Robinson 56′); Grant.

After much thought and procrastination, I think I've decided what transfers I'm making this week. Are the following moves a thumbs up or a thumbs down?

    ...................Martinez
    ......TAA* - Saiss* - Lamptey*
    Salah - Son - Pulisic* - Grealish - Pody*
    ..........(K)ane - DCL
Bench: Justin* - Brewster - Mitchell*
    1FT & 0.7 ITB

I originally wanted to do TAA & Pulisic > Chilwell/Zouma & Rash/Bruno. But a DF crisis and Man Utd looking awful, how does this look instead?

    A) Saiss & Pulisic > Zouma/Chilly & Ziyech
    or just keep with
    B) TAA & Pulisic > Zouma/Chilly & Bruno/Rash

Kane or son for the armband will be tough to decide

Kane will be around 180% ownership in the top 10k, enough said

What do you mean by this?

Son (c) would mean you make up ground on top 10k in the case that Son gets more points than Kane.

Yeah if Kane gets more points you would lose ground on top 10k.

But I think it comes down to who you think will score more points, rather than who the top 10k is going to captain.

I feel Kane is still more likely to be involved in any Spurs attacking return. Son is sometimes pushed very wide to the left. I own both and the armband is firmly on Kane. Granted Kane drops deep to collect balls but when they attack he is front and centre.

Kilman is heading into a bad run of fixtures Id rather spend my transfers on players with good fixtures. If in Jan he's still in the team at 4.3 - 4.5m he's still good value for the better fixtures.

At least we'll know he's a guaranteed starter by then as well. Much rather spend the extra on Coufal

I'd keep Barnes as Lei have some good fixtures coming up and they're playing well. Foden I'd lose as those 1 point cameos are too annoying. When Aguero and Jesus are back he'll play even less.

I'm in a strange position where I want to play Charlie Taylor over TAA, but benching a 7.4m defender is ridiculous. So ideally I sell him, but I want 2 FT's over the int'l break. Might just bench TAA.

Clean sheet odds suggest C. Taylor has a 20% chance of a clean sheet, TAA has 16.7% chance of a clean sheet (both not adjusted for bookies margin).

Hence I would be playing TAA due to much higher attacking potential

I have 2FT and no idea what to do... a nice problem to have!

                      Martinez, Forster

                      Salah, Son, Hamez, Grealish, Soucek
                      Kane, DCL, Maupay

Original plan was Maupay -> Antonio but not sure whether he will be back. Hamez out is a possibility I guess...

Genuinely changes every week. Overall if Ings is fit I'd say Ings and Kane and then a budget striker

Robbo and Pulisic to Coufal and KDB for free? Would leave me with super cheap defence (Lamptey*, Ayling, KWP, Coufal, Kilman)

The moves in isolation looks OK. I wouldn't be comfortable having that defence but they are most likely nailed.

                            Ryan
                            Chilwell, KWP, Justin

What moves are best? Help and advice greatly received!
                            A) Ryan -> Leno or Mendy? (Has Ryan lost his place permanently?)
                            B) Jimenez+Mitrovic -> DCL+Wilson
                            C) Bissouma+Mitrovic -> Zaha/Grealish+Bamford/Watkins/Adams and then play 3-5-2 rather than 3-4-3

I have 2 FTs...So Ryan -> Mendy and then probably one of:
                                  1) Rodriguez -> Zaha
                                  2) Rodrigues -> Grealish

Depends on your TV and how rest of the team looks.

I'm considering a KDB/Sterling double up from GW10 but it does restrict choice elsewhere in your team.

After owning Sterling for the last four GW's, watching likes of Grealish, Ward-Prowse and Zaha racking in the pointsI'd say a definite yes. Choose two of the three, and spend elsewhere.

Grealish is a lock in my team for sure, looks dangerous in every thing he does. No other mid priced mids are that appealing to me though keeping fixture swings in mind for the likes of Zaha etc. JWP double free kick goal doesn't make me want to get him in either...

City's fixtures are too hard to ignore so that's why I'm so tempted for the triple big hitters in midfield

I'm tempted to but, I think I'll be going Dias/Laporte + Cancelo + KDB/Sterling. Then there's of course Agüero , can he get back to his best?

Aguero could be a steal at 10m but I think it will take him a while to get settled again... don't know if he can hit peak form again that's the thing. We may see more of Jesus this season

Interesting how Liverpool will be on top of the fixture ticker for defence in 2 GWs from now, up until GW18...

Not really sure about that tbh, especially with those fixtures and current form.

Doubling on Man city defense and Liverpool attack can work.

Cancelo is worth a shot even if he is playing 2 out of 3 games

Just can't trust that Liverpool defense with so much randomness and their price.

He triple captained Son in GW5 (who had been promoted from vice-captain in the absence of Jamie Vardy) for a score of 91 but has not yet used his Wildcard or Free Hit.

Olavi Oja, Aleksander Vage Nilsen and Ville Tuominen (Santigold) all won again in League 1 of the FFS Head-to-Head leagues (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/head-to-head-leagues/) and now have 18 points each out of a possible 21, but Tim Hill and Cam Black both lost. Olavi is the new leader by virtual of having the best rank of the three (615k).
Peter Tind in League 2, Division 2 and David Stanton in League 3, Division 2 both won again in GW7. These are the only managers in the top four Leagues to have won all seven of their matches so far.
The Head-to-Head GW7 results and GW8 fixtures will be included in TopMarx’s next ‘Best of the FFScout Community’ and ‘Complete Guide’ articles.

The safety score for GW7 in TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/33020/standings/c) (code: 48n69x) was 41 and another 221 managers were eliminated. New joiners must have passed all previous safety scores (https://torresmagic.webs.com/lmsupdate.htm). See also https://www.livefpl.net/LMS for live updates.

Emmanuel Oloche was the top scorer for October in the FFS Community Members mini-league, scoring 329 points in Gameweeks 4 to 7 without using any chips during that period.
He began the month with an outstanding Gameweek 4, when he scored 136 points for a Gameweek rank of 33. Eight of his players that Gameweek (Son, Rodriguez, Wilson, Jorginho, Salah, Zouma, Bellerin and captain Kane) rewarded him with double-digit returns, but his other three all scored zero!

Would you sacrifice your defence (Lamptey*, KWP, Ayling, Coufal, Kilman) to get this midfield / attack (Salah, KDB, Son, Grealish, Zaha; Kane, DCL, Brewster)?

I just can't seem to get anything going this season, my rank is c**p and I'm getting my a$$ handed to me in my mini leagues.

Please can I politely request some opinions on my squad? I've got 1FT and don't fancy taking a hit. Thanks.

I'm not surprised with that line-up, There comes a time when you have to take hits to get out of a desperate situation.

I would get rid of TAA and improve your defence. Get Chillwell/Zouma, Creswell etc
ASM and Barnes are not going to get you out of the mess.
Maupay has to go as well for Wilson or Bamford.

                                Good luck.
