Which Chelsea assets deserve our investment for FPL Gameweek 8?

Chelsea have become the talk of the town in the Fantasy Premier League community as they found their groove in a 3-0 win at Burnley in Gameweek 7.

Timo Werner (£9.3m), Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) and Kurt Zouma (£5.2m) scored, Mason Mount (£6.8m), Ziyech and Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) registered the assists and the defence kept the much-anticipated clean sheet to create whispers of double-ups and triple-ups for Gameweek 8.

We checked in with the Scout Network to get their take on which Chelsea assets we as FPL managers should be investing in.

The Scout Network: Which Chelsea assets deserve our investment? 1

Ted Talks FPL graphic showing the Chelsea defence with and without their new defencive assets

I’m going to focus on the Blues’ defence. I think it’s fair to say that the combined impact of Chelsea’s new defensive signings has been huge. On the three occasions when Mendy, Thiago Silva and Chilwell have played together they have earned a clean sheet. This can’t even be classed as a coincidence as the defensive statistics describe a clear drop off in chances conceded, big and small. This is a really positive sign for clean sheet potential going forward as long as these three players can stay fit and Frank Lampard doesn’t rotate them too heavily.

Zouma and Chilwell celebrate the Chelsea win in Gameweek 7 over Burnley

I’ve been a bit reluctant to consider another Chelsea asset since selling Werner ahead of Gameweek 4 for Danny Ings. However, with Frank’s team bang in form, and facing a Sheffield United team up next, who are yet to win a game this season, now feels like the right time for me to reconsider.

With Saiss missing out in Gameweek 7 and Wolves’ fixtures on the turn, I am considering a switch to a player I’ve had on my watchlist radar for a few weeks now, Kurt Zouma. At a cheaper price (£5.2) to his more popular counterpart Ben Chilwell (£5.9), Zouma has scored three goals to Chilwell’s one since the start of the season, and has had three more shots on target and four more shots in the box than his team mate too.

Chilwell does offer better assist potential than Zouma though, with his two assists compared to Zouma’s zero, and of course Chilwell can often be seen amongst the set pieces too. Which leads me to conclude that neither Zouma or Chilwell feel like a bad option in terms of defenders with attacking threat, in fact there could be an argument for both based on their attacking form right now. But, considering budget, and goal threat, Zouma edges it for me.

In terms of midfield and forward options for Chelsea, rotation still bothers me a little at the moment, although with Pulisic’s injury probably eases that fear slightly. With a goal and an assist against Burnley, Ziyech has been added to my watchlist.

Mendy and Thiago boosting Chelsea defence's FPL appeal ahead of decent fixture run

Chelsea’s new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

Chelsea were a team many earmarked at the beginning of the season due to their signings and relatively attractive prices. I for one had Werner in for Gameweek 1. However, it has taken a bit of time for them to gel, unsurprisingly due to the number of new signings, but they are beginning to show signs of doing so, especially in defence.

The arrival of Mendy in goal has had an instant impact and for me makes the defence more appealing currently. I brought in Chilwell this Gameweek and he seems the safest option albeit the most expensive as he offers good attacking options from his corners and free-kick. Zouma is the one in the spotlight due to his goal return, but it’s unlikely to continue at the rate it is, so feel he might be a bandwagon pick, but if you want just a defender who’s cheaper than Chilwell and are happy with clean sheets and maybe one or two more goals this season then go for Zouma.

Mendy at £5.0m is a safe keeper pick but I personally prefer to spend only £4.5m in this position. If you are after more than shut outs go for Chillwell. The defence seems to be more settled now as well with only James and/or Azpilicueta being the rotation options at right back/right wing-back.

Their attacking options still seem a bit disjointed and I’m not sure Frank has worked out the best way to play them all yet. I really like the look of Ziyech and is the one I’m closely monitoring. I currently have Pulisic but after his injury in the warm-up at the weekend I’ll be waiting news on that before deciding to stick or move him out.

Chelsea’s fixtures are great for an attacking option in your side, but I think it might just take a few more weeks for them to click and we see their options returning regularly.

Transfer Algorithm

The Scout Network: Which Chelsea assets deserve our investment? 3

Transfer Algorithm Chelsea FPL options

After some great displays from Chelsea lately, there is every reason to check up on their assets. The table above is extracted from the Transfer Algorithm and represent the current rating of the attacking Chelsea assets by BCV.

BCV is a value metric considering both expected points and the limited amount of money at hand in FPL. Despite being fortunate to start in Gameweek 7 due to a Pulisic hamstring, Werner seem to be the clear number-one go-to alternative from Chelsea going forward.

Given his status as a world class striker and flexibility for filling in both as a striker and on the left wing, Werner is quite likely to start almost every game. That’s easily worth another million.

The big worry for all the relevant attacking Chelsea assets are minutes on the pitch – they are a bit too many serious contenders, and need to fend off too much competition from each other to get enough out there. And despite all sexy metrics to evaluate players, minutes is the single most important one denting their appeal.

Due to this, actually staying away from them all is the Tranfer Algorithm’s preferred choice at the moment. There are safer options elsewhere, so staying on the fence is perfectly sensible.

Anyone who reads my weekly blog will know that my spreadsheets have consistently tipped up Chelsea at both ends of the pitch, so the three clean sheets and ten goals scored in the last four Gameweeks have not come as a surprise. Chelsea assets were already firmly on my radar, hence why I trebled up on them in Gameweek 5.

Ziyech celebrates scoring Chelsea’s opening goal against Burnley

It is really difficult to ignore Chelsea at the moment.

At the start of the season it was hard to predict which of the attacking players at Chelsea would be regular starters and how quickly the likes of Werner, Ziyech and Havertz would hit the ground running in the Premier League.

With Pulisic picking up another injury in the warm-up there appears to now be less risk of rotation across the midfield positions which bodes well for us as FPL Managers.

For me, Ziyech would be my midfielder of choice from Chelsea right now. The stats look great and he is regularly scoring FPL points including a goal and an assist in Gameweek 7.

Chilwell and Zouma are the go to defenders in FPL right now and rightly so with three clean sheets in the last four weeks. However don’t overlook Mendy – at 5.0m he is a great option in that Chelsea defence.

That Liverpool defensive double up needs to go. I'd get Chilwell for one of them & save the other FT.

Could use the extra cash to upgrade Podence to Ziyech though

Also an option but TAA/Robbo is better for 2 FT because it allows for a big upgrade elsewhere imo

Which would you opt for? 2FTs, 0.3 itb:

    A) Ings, Mitrovic > DCL, Wilson
    B) Ings, Podence > Wilson, Zaha (Mitro > Adams/Bamford next GW)
    C) Ings, Podence > DCL, Bowen (Mitro > Adams/Bamford next GW)

Or for options B & C could do all 3 for a hit this week.
    Thanks!

So many options now, with 2ft 0 itb what would you do here?

    Ings Jimenez DCL

My team very similar, only difference is Lamptey/Mendy instead of KWP/Poveda. I’m thinking either:

      1. TAA/Ings to Chilwell/Vardy (but big issue leaving Foden)
      2. TAA/Ings/Foden to Coufal/KDB/Wilson for a -4

      You got any ideas?

I just can’t ignore Kane this GW with the amount of teams captaining him.

currently I’m doing ings & TAA to Kane & coufal/lampty/james.

but I really want the eliminate Foden from my team... maybe to bowen... I don’t know...

we can also bring werner, zaich and zouma for ings, foden and taa...

Know what you mean about Kane but don’t want to disrupt the team for someone so expensive for 1 week only!

Bowen could be good.... also like the idea of TAA/Foden/Ings to Chilwell/Ziyech/Wilson then upgrade Jimi for Vardy next week.

You set on TAA out rather than Robbo?

both of them are huge disappointment for me. TAA is out purely because it frees me more money. I get what you say about Kane but WBA looks bad and I dont like Vardi against wolves

    Martinez (Forster)
    Robbo Chillwell Lamptey (Saiss, Mitchell)
    Salah Son Grealish Zaha (Bissouma)
    Kane DCL Bamford

Have 1 FT and 1.1Mil ITB

    Was thinking
    A) zaha to ziyech
    B) Saiss to bellerin
    C) Saiss to Coufal/cresswell
    D) Robbo to bellerin/Whu defender

Transferred Ings to DCL. Currently have Saiss at the back with Kilman and Zouma and 1.2 itb. I feel like Saiss ain't gonna start and having him with Barkley in midfield is gonna be another 2 point or 4 point total.

    Been debating:
    A) whether to take a -4 to get James, Chillwell or even Bellerin at the back for Saiss. (James could allow me to transfer barkley out nxt gw for zaha or grealish)
    B) leave KWP to take place of Saiss.
    C) Barkley for someone? -4

Vardy's a great option. If you keep 3.5 ITB to upgrade Brewster (after you get Wilson) you can go up to 8.0 so unless you get Richarlison you're stuck with 6m options cos there's no one else worth getting in that bracket. You also end up having bench headaches because you've upgraded your bench fodder, so you'll have wasted money in midfield whilst also having 2m or so in the bank.

I’ve a good feeling about Jesus this season. I appreciate that’s not measurable but he looks different gravy from what I’ve seen.

Scored last night on his return too.

Werner could well be on pens now, so it’s a tricky one.

Maybe your gut feeling turns out to bee right about Jesus, but i'd like to wait till he shows actual returns in the PL before considering him.

Agree on Werner being a tricky one.

Vardy has a low xG, but keeps on scoring.

For me it's Werner vs Vardy now.

Anything worth a hit chaps? 2.5 ITB.

    Martinez
    Chillwell, Zouma, Justin
    Salah, Son, Fernandes, Barkley
    Kane, DCL, Bamford

    (Steer, Kilman, Bissouma, Mitchell)

Considering one of these next week:

    Barkley -> Grealish/Rodriguez/Zaha
    Fernandes -> KDB
    Mitchell/Justin -> Vestergaard/Coufal

    Cheers

I like the Mitchell to Coufal move but probably not worth a hit.

Ward-Prowse has Newcastle next. Maybe him over Barkley? Will be back on pens with Ings out.

Been patient with my FT this week. Any news on James Rodriguez or do I get to make a luxury transfer?

    On a wildcard

    Son +1.5 or kane

    1.5 prob means
    Robertson over cancelo/dias

    Cancelo dias/kane or son/robbo

I’m more likely to keep Son than I am Kane, if that helps.

I agree son more popular but had such a bad start to season tempted 2 keep kane.

If go kane can still have son this week before kdb swap.

Been really stewing over my Saiss replacement all week.

    Martinez Forster
    Semedo Saiss James Lamptey Mitchell
    Salah Son Grealish Rashford Foden
    Kane DCL Davis

    1.1m ITB.

    A) Saiss > Chilwell
    B) Saiss > Zouma
    C) Saiss + Foden > Coufal + Ziyech -4

I'm leaning B. Purely because of the flexibility it offers me in terms of getting City assets.

If I do B and keep the money in the bank, I can do in GW10:
    A) Rashford + Kane > KdB + Jesus
    B) Semedo + Rashford > KdB + Coufal
    C) Foden + Kane > KdB + Wilson

All for no hits if I can roll my FT in GW9 as planned.

If I get Chilwell a lot of these moves are off. Especially B which would preserve Kane.

Coufal option now is tempting as well, but if I get Ziyech in for Foden I'm actively trying to gain points in the short-term rather than plan for City coverage in GW10. This method places a lot of faith in Ziyech who has no direct replacements and will have to ride out a few weeks. I'm not sure I'm convinced yet. Keeping Foden for this week is nice too because in the event that Jota becomes a must-have, he's an easy like-for-like swap to Jota.

Am I on the right track here or is there something glaringly obvious that I'm missing?

I understand where you’re coming from but there are so many possibilities. My Saiss spot was a placeholder for Trent or Robertson so I thought Jimenez had to become Antonio or Che Adam’s, but then VVD and Fabinho happened and now Jimenez could be Werner or Jesus.

I would concentrate on getting the player you really want, and there’s no doubt Chilwell is an upgrade on Zouma longer term.

I understand the 'don't plan too far ahead' mentality. However, there is literally a 0% chance that I don't get one of KdB or Sterling in GW10. Literally 0. Those fixtures are just way too good. BUR FUL mun WBA.

Literally the 3 teams most expected to get relegated all at home in the span of 4 gameweeks. There is no way I won't get at least one.

The plans I've put in are not super set on WHO makes way, but someone will make way. And through my various permutations, and I must have done at least 20-30 combinations of how to get Sterling/Kdb into the team, I'm forced into hits if I get Chilwell for the bulk of them because I have to stump up around 0.5m more than I'd be able to free up.

It frustrated me a lot and as a result, even though I think Chilwell is the better asset than Zouma, that difference in price is proving too difficult to solve without forcing me into taking hits in order to get City players. It's particularly bad if it will force me to ditch players who I don't consider bad picks.

I think a straight swap for Creswell is a no brainer. At the same price as Saiss he greatly out performes Coufal in every stat.

B but then bettet get Vardy instead of Jesus as better form and on penalties
