Salah tests positive for coronavirus – Egyptian FA

Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

The Egyptian Football Association announced on Friday that the Liverpool midfielder returned a positive test ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo but is asymptomatic.

The (translated) statement read:

The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, was infected with the coronavirus after his test came out positive – although he does not suffer from any symptoms.

[He] was subject to the medical protocol after the coordination of the national team doctor, Dr Muhammad Abu Al-Ola, with his English club, Liverpool, in addition to isolating him in his room and also isolating all contacts.

In a later announcement, Egypt confirmed that a second test backed up the findings of the first:

At the time of writing, Liverpool have yet to confirm the news.

Barring any further developments, Salah will now have to undergo a period of self-isolation and will very likely be unavailable for the Gameweek 9 visit of Leicester City.

The Reds are already injury-ravaged heading into that fixture, with Joe Gomez (£5.4m) joining Virgil van Dijk (£6.3m) on the sidelines and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) also a major doubt with a calf problem.

Sadio Mane (£12.0m) of course tested positive for coronavirus last month, returning to training at Melwood after a 10-day period of self-isolation and featuring for the Reds in the Merseyside derby, 15 days after his initial diagnosis.

Salah could feasibly return in Gameweek 10, then, if a similar timeframe of recovery, isolation and return to training pans out – although there is also the small matter of a flight back to England in between.

We have already seen West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Robinson (£5.5m) withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad after returning a positive test of his own.

Wolves’ Conor Coady (£5.0m) is also self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier on Friday, Ireland revealed that Alan Browne had returned a positive coronavirus test after playing against England – although the Football Association of Ireland added that “no close contacts of the player” had been identified.

So for the purposes of footie, I'd say it's worth keeping track of those who've had it. Never an exact science, but something to risk manage - there's tons to risk manage in footie anyway.

The way we treat it will change...but like most Corona like viruses...it will not end. We cannot extinguish it, it will become seasonal like many of the viruses we've had for hundreds of years.

According to Egypt National Team. There will be retests on covid cases before the upcoming game and before the game coming in the next week so if Mo gets healthy fast then he is gonna play for his country so will do for Liverpool. I mean this is not that likely to happen but dont rush to sell...

Unless the retest he gets in the next few hours is negative (thus meaning it was a false positive), he will still have to self-isolate for 10 days from today under UK guidance / law.

NHS website says: "It's a legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive or are told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace. You could be fined if you do not self-isolate."

Oh yeah but I presume whenever he goes back to the UK the same thing would apply? Haven't a clue though honestly about travelling right now, still find it a farce so many are still allowed to fly right now.

and if you subsequently test negative, then that no longer applies does it Einstein. I've seen people recover within less than a week and test negative.

That's cool, yet you can still spread the virus for a certain amount of time with a negative test if you had the virus. Hence the regulations.

I'm toying with the idea. It is 2 transfers though. Challenge I have with my team is lack of bench cover and uncertainty over Foden's minutes so benching even for a week isn't very appealing.

If you think using the 2 transfers you'll have to for it (meaning you can't change anyone else for 2 weeks without a hit) makes it worthwhile while also taking into account price variations then go for it

Do it. I'm going to play justin (Salah) and Brewster (Wilson). It's just not worth the transfers when there is a big fixture swing for a couple of great teams, when Spurs and City look uncertain and when teams like Liverpool are in pieces. Looks to me like all the power will be in the hands of those who can do two transfers or a mini WC after this week instead of having to deal with getting Salah back in or whatever.

Chill and unleash the Brewster embracing the two points. Expect failure, hope for success

Anyone cynical enough like me to maybe think was "planned"? Liverpool knew he would be going to his brothers wedding and that there would be a good chance he catches the virus but were happy for him to go anyway because if he catches it now he misses 1 game at most where-as if he were to catch it over the busy Christmas period it could mean missing 3 or 4 games at least.

If not Liverpool and Salah then surely this must be on the minds of some other clubs/managers.

Are you actually suggesting that there would be some spoken or unspoken arrangement for a player to be exposed to a virus that could be very harmful to them or in a worst case scenario, kill them, in a way as that it creates minimal impact for the team they represent.

I'm sorry but that is basically... mental.

He's been allowed to go because he is legally allowed to do so and they really have no grounds to stop him

              • 8 Years

very harmful? He's an athlete in the peak of his career. There is not a single footballer as far as I know in a first world country that has died from coronavirus. A young coach who was 21 died but he had leukaemia. The chance of him becoming seriously ill from it is minimal and death even lower.

And ofc Liverpool can't physically stop him but he's in a contract and as such they can tell him they don't think he should go and that he'll be fined if he does.

            2. Deulofail
              • 8 Years
              3 years, 5 months ago

It's just not mental. Sorry, but you're being over the top. I doubt the question of whether they are legally allowed to stop him ever came up. I would expect that Salah talked to the club about it though. Both parties knew the risks of him contracting Covid, and it's not incoceivable that somebody, whether a high-status individual, or a collective which includes or excludes Salah, whether formal or informal, spoken or unspoken, conceived, themselves, of the line of argument that it would be better to miss one game now than more games in December, and that this affected the manner in which they communicated with Salah about the topic. It's just not mental.

The idea that Liverpool encouraged him to go and try to contract covid has nothing to do with me, though.

Not sure if I can stretch far enough to think it was planned, but certainly theres big questions about who at LIverpool thought allowing Salah to his brothers wedding in Egypt was going to be a socially distanced affair. These are supposed to be some very smart people in charge.. are they really so naive to think it was going to be fine? Hmm..

How many footballers have caught it twice so far? Sure, there's a chance of it but it's probably less likely than if they haven't got it before.

And yeah as the above 2 have said - the planned was in quotation marks because I'm not saying it was purposefully planned but rather they knew this could happen and thought it was better for it to happen now. Like why did they allow him to go otherwise?

Hmm maybe. Don't think it was premeditated though.

Salah may well have attended the wedding without seeking prior explicit permission.

I can sell for 12.3m and he will drop at least 0.1 if not 0.2.
If you got him for 12m then you are right probably. I expect him to be 12.2 by GW10

They don't usually fall as much as people think when they're flagged, unless out for many weeks.

There was a similar situation around this time last year with KDB who was out for one week after an IB. I think he only fell 0.1 or maybe not at all.

Yeah I'm not sure he will fall more than 0.1. But I suppose then losing 0.1 isn't too damaging.

If Salah develops symptoms (which he can easily) he could be out for longer.
Fatigue is a big factor with Covid as well (I've just recovered myself). He won't be back at his best likely (unless he is fully asymptomatic)

With Salah out, is Jota more nailed?

Maybe. Question is how appealing is he in a team with no VvD, TAA, Gomez, Salah... so far. Against a fairly solid Leicester team.

He appears to be a bargain but could be a disaster.

well VvD and Gomez out won't have too much of an input to goals scored. If they concede more they will attack more I'd expect.
Still have Mane, Thiago, Robbo, Firmino - and still better than Leicester.

I also have him, and would remove him if I had an extra few FTs. No guarantee he'll get back in the team, as I understand it. I think all we know s that it's not a long-term injury. Shifting him for Coufal wuld be nice, but I guess you should keep an eye on everyone's availabilityand make the call at the end of the break. You might want back up for Justin anyway, as Pereira and Castagne could be back soon.
