Fernandes breaks key passes record in just 45 minutes at West Ham

West Ham 1-3 Man United

  • Goals: Tomas Souček (£4.9m) | Paul Pogba (£7.7m), Mason Greenwood (£7.1m), Marcus Rashford (£9.5m)
  • Assists: Declan Rice (£4.8m) | Bruno Fernandes (£10.9m), Alex Telles (£5.5m), Juan Mata (£5.9m)
  • Bonus points: Pogba x3, Fernandes x2, Souček x1

SMASH AND GRAB

Bruno Fernandes (£10.9m) left his burgeoning ownership wondering what might have been as he transformed Manchester United in a 3-1 win at West Ham.

In a match which the phrase “game of two halves” was invented for, the Portuguese international was comfortably the man of the match despite only featuring for 45 minutes.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer rested Fernandes and Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) in Gameweek 11, citing recent bruises and knocks.

“With Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, they’ve been kicked between here and there lately. Bruno’s foot’s been sore since the Southampton game. Hopefully, I don’t have to use him tonight.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking pre-match

The Manchester United boss was hoping he could get through the London Stadium encounter without drawing on them but his hand was forced when West Ham played his team off the park in the opening period.

“We struggled to keep up with the counter-attack and set plays. We gave the ball away too often.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Solskjaer introduced Fernandes and Rashford in the place of Donny van Beek (£6.7m) and Edinson Cavani (£8.1m), the two players slotting into their preferred positions of number 10 and left-wing respectively – and they turned Manchester United into a completely different team.

Crucial to that transformation Fernandes playing a whopping eight key passes. That’s right, EIGHT in just 45 minutes – the most of any player in a Premier League game this season and enough to help him also achieve two bonus points.

If those around him had shown better finishing in the second half, or if Solskjaer had started the player, he could have realistically come away from the London Stadium with three or four assists and might have matched Gameweek 11 captaincy rival Kevin De Bruyne (£11.7m).

The surprise benching may have ended Fernandes’ run of four consecutive away-day double-digit hauls but he remains an exceptional asset on the road and is, of course, still yet to blank outside of Old Trafford in 2020/21.

That said, Fantasy managers may want to keep an eye on his fixtures, considering Manchester United are at home in four of the next six. Fernandes may have averaged 11.4 points per away game this season but he has scored just 4.8 points per game at Old Trafford.

STRICKEN DEVILS

It is clear that the demanding schedule is starting to take its toll on Manchester United’s squad before the Christmas rush is even at its height.

We recently highlighted the hectic nature of their December fixtures, this month containing nine matches and no fewer than six two-day turnarounds.

So the fact that Cavani and Anthony Martial (£8.7m) both picked up knocks against West Ham is far from ideal for Solskjaer.

“Edinson had to come off with an injury. Hopefully, it’s not too bad. Anthony had to come off as well.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“We lost (Anthony) Martial and Edinson (Cavani). Hopefully not too bad, but they couldn’t carry on. It’s going to be a season where we have to do without players. I’m just glad that we’ve got the subs that we have. We’ll do some scans and hopefully, they’ll be available soon.”

Meanwhile, David de Gea (£5.4m) sat this one out as the injury sustained at Southampton in Gameweek 10 continues to plague the goalkeeper.

He was able to face PSG midweek but, Solskjaer was not willing to take any risks, handing a much-anticipated first Premier League start to Dean Henderson (£5.3m), who did an excellent job of keeping Manchester United only 1-0 down in the woeful first half.

“The injury against Southampton is something we don’t want to take a risk with. Obviously, he played against PSG, so hopefully, we can have him ready for Leipzig as well.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

HAMMERS COMING DOWN

West Ham’s defensive credentials continue to fall as they conceded for the fifth time in seven matches.

In many ways, the first half proved to be somewhat misleading concerning their recent problems in defence, the Hammers allowed complete control of the game by Manchester United’s woeful passing and approach play.

However, the game turned on its head once the Red Devils got going and West Ham were second-best from that point.

It continues a downward trend at the back for David Moyes’ men who were certainly fortunate not to concede more often in recent wins over Fulham and Aston Villa.

That was borne out in recent underlying statistics too. For example, they came into Gameweek 11 with a worse score for expected goals conceded (xGC) over the previous four matches than the Cottagers and, accordingly, let in more goals than the Cottagers on Saturday.

Crucially, popular Fantasy asset Patrick Bamford (£6.1m) and his Leeds colleagues face West Ham in Gameweek 12 before Chelsea’s in-form attackers host the Hammers in Gameweek 14.

West Ham United XI (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Balbuena; Masuaku, Souček, Rice, Coufal (Johnson 85′); Fornals (Benrahma 75′), Bowen (Lanzini 76′); Haller.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): D Henderson; Telles, Maguire, Lindelöf, Wan-Bissaka; Pogba, McTominay; Martial (Mata 62′), van de Beek (B Fernandes 46′), Greenwood; Cavani (Rashford 46′).

    Hi all,

So with seemingly all premiums starting to hit form, how do we decide who to go with and do we stick with our choices or aim for the hokey-pokey nature of bringing in for one gameweek at a time?

Son & Kane seem fixture proof at this moment in time,
KDB is helping City return to the City that we have come to expect,
    Salah keeps ticking over,
Bruno is talismanic as shown in United's win against West Ham,

Obviously we can't fit all 5 in our teams and also have the likes of Vardy, Mane, Sterling to consider.

What are peoples views on these 'heavy hitters'? Stick with the three or four you've got or juggle around depending on fixtures?

Juggling every week is too much, think I’m going to change 1 every 4 or so weeks based on fixtures

going with 4, currently without Kane right now. Getting Kane in for easier fixtures and Spurs will have more possession and touches in the box, which will mean more pens for Spurs.

Fixtures for KDB and Salah are just too not to have either of them, and Bruno makes the entire United team tick like KDB so is a hold until he stops ticking over

Think I agree regarding the midfield trio of KDB, Salah and Bruno, who is your fourth?

Kane just seems an enigma at the moment and everything goes through him - any Spurs goal has Kane or Son involvement at the moment so even a 1-0 or 2-0 win and you'd be looking like getting upwards of 7-8 points from them.

I am personally targeting the big hitters in runs of at least 3-4 fixtures, as above.

I brought in Kane/Son in GW5, Fernandes GW9 and KDB GW10, which seems to have paid off for their good fixtures. In most cases I've immediately captained the players which has mostly provided instant returns. I've sacrificed KDB, Fernandes and Salah when their fixtures weren't as good or when they were injured to fund these moves, so have done some rotation.

The tough part is selling when you have significant price rises, and when you might want to bring them back again in the future.

Captaincy is certainly a big part of it, it will soon be at the stage of choosing the wrong one of the 3 or 4 has a big impact when their EO's head up towards 100, Bruno especially.

Price rises have an impact and where the hokey-cokey element is a tricky one to pursue, especially when money is tight already to afford 4 of them

    4. PastaFasul

I think you need to pick 4 and stick, go for mid-priced value and not all cheapies, a playing bench needed we have already seen. The chance of getting the hokey-pokey right every GW is pretty slim and in the end I think the points difference will be tight if you take a bunch of hits switching for fixtures between the heavy hitters. That's my opinion, others might enjoy the risk.

I'm struggling to have 4 and mid priced value but think having Robbo, Chilwell and Dias is causing me that problem.

Sticking for a few fixtures would be the safer way of playing it for sure, the risk of bringing in and out is clear - it's also the feeling attached to it of selling one who hauls or buying in one who hauls at the correct time!

I have Robbo, Chilwell and Cancelo, I think having a defender from Liverpool / City etc can provide more points than cheap defenders and a 4th big hitter. My mid is Salah, KDB, Bruno, Jota & Soucek, with DCL & Bamford up front.

It will probably stay that way until around GW 16 when the Spurs double up becomes too tempting to resist. I just need to decide who gets sacrificed from the midfield or do I go cheaper at the back.

Agreed, most on hear bragging about having all the heavy hitters have light defense or forwards, and 0 bench. Working now but long term I think will be a problem.

Having all 4 certainly makes it slim elsewhere, losing Grealish and DCL isn't ideal. Hopefully having a few of those two, Robbo or Jota etc will bring in similar points to a premium/Brewster type combo...

This is my take on it posted last night -

So Salah, Kdb, Raz, Kane, Son all got a goal and assist this gw.

Big hitters are matching each other regardless of opposition for the most part. So the points gains are all on the mid priced assets, just buy the three u are most comfortable with 4 if u can fit them in and then hope the likes of Jota, grealish, ziyech, dcl, Rich, James, Bamford, Wilson, watkins, zaha etc etc can get u enough points to move up in ranks.

This is going to be the toughest season to do well, no easy picks and you are always going to want who you don't own.

Of course there will be blanks but son scored vs city and arsenal, Salah scored vs Wolves. Kdb blanked vs spurs and the spurs boys blanked vs Chelsea so there will be blanks for sure but they are all scoring heavily its not like there is a stand out trio to own is my point, a case can be made for any combination of 3 or 4 and you will always want to own the couple you don't game to game.

I think you’re right with picking ones you’re comfortable with and then letting it roll for a few weeks...trying not to get twitchy fingers when one blanks for a week or two.

I've been rotating based on best captain choice. Its working out okay so far.

Won't be capping spurs lads in next 4 so kane and son have gone for me. Will get back when they play Fulham.

Salah, KDB and Bruno my 3 prem mids at the moment gives me
Salah v Fulham, KDB v WBA, Fernandes v Leeds and Salah v WBA in next 4.

I'm on Salah KDB Bruno Son at the moment, plus Podence (who I will probably switch to Raphina this week).

Very happy with those, but I have no Kane. Got to cut your cloth accordingly... hoping for fairly limited returns with cpl, liv, LEI in the next three then by GW16 with FUL and a run of green, I'll need to find a way to get him in.

That’s expected goal stats are misleading. Having gone 2-0 up they didn’t try to score more.

If they weren’t 2-0 up they’d have attacked more and got better stats.

Avoid Kane and Son for now, they won't be captained and the stats were horrific against Arsenal, entire team had an xG below 0.4. they won't haul many times off those sort of poor numbers. time to reconsider them is GW16 onwards. When the season is like this I find it best to let captaincy be your guide.

Yeah, I have been using the RMT tool starting from my current team with Salah, KDB, and Bruno, no Spurs. Then I pretend I had unlimited funds and could remove a cheap striker for Kane while leaving my current heavy hitters in, and I see what that change does to the recommended captain selection over a fairly long period of time (8 weeks). I find that it hardly enhances my captaincy options at all. If the tool is correct, I'd be much better off spending the transfers switching around cheaper assets to capitalise on their fixtures.

It seems I can get all five trending heavy hitters in my lineup (Salah, KDB, Bruno, Son, Kane) but it requires my backline to be a bit on the weaker side with no defender more than 3.9. Lots of options in the sub-4.0 defender bracket these days after recent drops!

However, this might be violating Joe's traditional "price point" advice, not to mention taking a -16 to get there in time for this weekend's fixtures.

Think I'll hold for now with three big hitters in the midfield plus Grealish and a good mid-price front line (DCL, Bamford, Watkins) before eventually finding the money to get Kane in a few weeks' time.

We are spoiled for choice with all the good options this season.

too much of a headache to constantly swap

until someone doesn't perform for 3 GWs& also poor fixtures coming i keep

I have Vardy as my 4th Currently.
Son and Kane will feature at some point, Vardy falls by the wayside so

I'd want to have 4 from
      Salah, Bruno, KDB, Son, Kane

Salah and KDB are pretty close to essential as they’re prime (c) choices for next few weeks.

After that it’s more personal preference. Fernades has tough fixtures, injury and due a rest so I’m happy without until the new year.

One of Son or Kane seems sensible (I’ve gone Son) but I wouldn’t captain either.

How do these options look? Keen to bring in Salah (c) for GW 12 and 15. Will use my wildcard in GW16.
    A) Son, DCL, Keane >>> Salah, Wilson, Lewis (-4, 0.0 ITB)
    B) Son, DCL, Keane >>> Salah, Adams, Dallas (-4, 0.3 ITB)

Preference is A, but still uncertainty about Newcastle and COVID. Salah will probably go up tomorrow, so would probably have to go for a sub 4.2 non-playing defender instead of Lewis if I waited until later in the week.

Rest of the team looks like
    Mccarthy
    Chilwell Robertson Creswell (Keane*, Ferguson)
    KDB, Fernandes, Grealish, Son* (Soucek)
    Bamford, Watkins, DCL*

Think your defence is quite safe from rotation, considering you have a WC in the pocket I think it’s not the worst idea to just wait and see what happens with Newcastle. Having another non playing defender shouldn’t hurt you

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking this too, as my three defenders are all important starters for their teams. The only concern I'd have if one is rested for the busy Christmas schedule.

I suppose it ultimately comes down to Wilson over Adams vs having the security with Dallas as backup, assuming I hold the transfers and Salah rises.

Just amazes me how Son and Kane have a almost a 100% goal involvement for Spurs it seems. Tough fixtures have kept Spurs ceiling at 1 to 2 goals but the fact that Son and Kane are at the end of all goals (and assists) is a real killer...

Spurs assets definitely seem to be overperforming, but who knows when this overperforming will end

-8 with Vardy, DCL & Burke or -4 losing Grealish or Son and getting Brewster(up to 6.4)/Salah

DCL may go soon either way.

-8 is too much for my liking. Give Vardy one more week. I would lose Grealish over Son. feels like one can only move up if the one big hitter you dont one fails each week.

Salah, Son & Kane turne quite a decent green arrow to a red one.

Can't complain though Bruno, Vardy & KDB have also got the points over the past 2-3 gameweeks.

It would be exactly the same if you owned other way around though ie you would have turned a massive red arrow into a little green if you didn't have Bruno, KDB and Vardy but relied on spurs and Salah for points.

That's the issue atm: the premiums cancel each other out, rank wise.

Seems to me key issue for coming week is the new phenomenon of Klopp rotation of the front 4. Fulham away on Sunday, followed by Spurs at home on Wednesday. Jota looks certain to start on Sunday, and unlikely to start on Wednesday, when Klopp will want his trusted 3 for such a big game. But what of Salah? Will he start or even play against Fulham? Having neither in team atm, thinking of Just Jota in for this week, and then ensuring Salah in for Spurs.

So are you thinking Jota will always be on the bench? Not sure the assumption that he will only swap with Firmino has been borne out so far. Klopp seems to be making it very clear that he thinks the schedule overall is too much for there to be guaranteed starters for the twice a week games here on in. I recognise Squad players in CL this week, but think he might like to give star player a good rest before rest of Dec schedule.

So far he has started, but his minutes might be managed. I expect Salah to start vs Fulham, but whether it's 90 or 60+ mins is another question.

So my orginal plan was to do Son > Bruno but I might save this week and then have 2 FTs for GW12?

            Salah, Son, Mahrez, Jota, Grealish

            Fortser, Bamford, Coufal, Mitchell.

            1FT, 2.0ITB

That is 2 to 1. But if you need C Salah, then perhaps.

Well, that 8 point hit to sell Son, Cancelo and Regulión went rather well 😀

I was sure he wouldn’t play, didn’t consider he might be used on the right to give Walker a rest. Think it was the right long term decision.

I got James in, someone cheaper would have made Salah back easier.

I did, too. Selling Regulión was to finance someone other than a 4.0 defender for the festive season (I bought Dallas rather than someone like Nkounkou, which I think should pay dividends)

                  Seems like Klopp prefers 433.
Might not be the long term bargain we were hoping for.

Expect it vs Spurs, would be in most sides on here if nailed like that.

Rested I think. Firmino, Mané, Salah and Jota seem to be taking it in turns in recent weeks.

Although I’m going to play my wildcard ahead of gameweek 16, I don’t know how I’m going to use it.

The double gameweek is likely to be around GW18 so I guess the strategy is to just load up double GW players?

You’ve probably got a blank to navigate in GW18, which would be an ideal time to use your FH

Followed by a double in GW19

Wow!! So the wildcard chip is still going to be very useful. That’s great to know

According to Ben Crellin, around half the scheduled games in GW18 will be pushed into GW19, giving those that blank in 18 a double in 19. Something to do with giving teams some kind of winter break.

So wildcard to bring in double GW players and play the FH to navigate the blank GW?

I think that makes sense, but it all depends on which teams blank/double. And whether the PL decide to try and squeeze the two other doubles (from GW1) into the same period. You should know before you play your WC.

You might also set up your initial WC to set up a benchboost for GW19; but you could also be left with a team you don’t like coming out of it and have to play your second WC. Team value will obviously be an issue. Lots of season-defining decisions to be made around that time.
