Giroud outshines Werner again as Chelsea regress at both ends of the pitch

Wolves 2-1 Chelsea

  • Goals: Daniel Podence (£5.4m), Pedro Neto (£5.7m) | Olivier Giroud (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Owen Otasowie (£4.5m), Vitinha (£4.8m) | Ben Chilwell (£6.2m)
  • Bonus points: Podence x3, Neto x2, Chilwell x1

GIROUD NOT TO

Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) is fast becoming the key Fantasy Premier League forward at Chelsea as Timo Werner (£9.4m) continues to struggle in wide areas.

The former Arsenal striker scored the Blues’ only goal of the game as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Wolves, the second in his last three Premier League starts.

And if you go back to the beginning of Project Restart, no Chelsea player has found the net more often than Giroud (eight goals), who is working his way back to the top of the pecking order.

The Frenchman has started each of the last three Premier League matches for Frank Lampard’s side, lasting 90 minutes once and having his minutes managed around the 70-minute mark in two of them.

Any last remaining Werner owners who like the look of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures West Ham (home), Arsenal (away), Aston Villa (home) might do well to consider his signature – especially considering the German international is without a goal since Gameweek 8 and has blanked three times in the last four matches.

TRANSFER TIMO?

Werner’s biggest problem in recent outings has been how isolated Chelsea have left him on the flanks of the front-three, whether or not Lampard stations him on the left or right-hand side.

Against Wolves, Christian Pulisic‘s (£8.2m) first start since Gameweek 11 pushed Werner onto the right, where even his most insightful of runs were regularly ignored by his team-mates.

So much of Chelsea’s play went down the left-hand side through Pulisic who did provide some cut and thrust but, very soon, it became predictable and one-dimensional.

But the nail in Werner’s FPL coffin came after Lampard switched his wingers, allowing the former RB Leipzig man some time on the left of the front-three, only for Chelsea to send everything down the right-hand side through Pulisic again.

“Pulisic provides us with some width and he’s very good at winning his one-on-ones. He’s had a few issues with the hamstring but he’s trained so he’s straight back in.” – Frank Lampard

It is certainly worth adding that Chelsea sorely miss Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m), Lampard’s side resembling the laboured outfit from the early weeks of the season during the Moroccan’s last injury.

“No (there wasn’t enough) after the goal. We didn’t hang on either. Performance (has changed). It’s what gives you results. Maybe the lads think they’re playing well and the second you think you’re playing well, anything can happen.” – Frank Lampard

CATCHING A CHILL

Despite a recent speight of clean sheets, Chelsea’s defensive credentials have taken a knock in their last two matches.

Between Gameweeks 6 and 10, the Blues conceded just one goal, letting in three since the start of Gameweek 12.

Giving up a lead at Molineux given Wolves’ current state of affairs is also rather alarming.

Before Tuesday night, they were yet to find the net in a game which Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) had not started this season.

Not including Fantasy assists, the Mexican was involved in a significant 31% of Wolves’ 109 Premier League goals since promotion before Gameweek 13 – so he has been a huge miss.

Accordingly, when Daniel Podence (£5.4m) cut inside Reece James (£5.3m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.2m) and fired past Edouard Mendy (£5.2m) it ended Wolves’ longest run without a Premier League goal since their promotion in 2018 (296 minutes).

Wolves chose James’ flank as one to target as they wound through the gears in the final third of the match, the right-back escaping a penalty thanks to the VAR, but leaving Kurt Zouma (£5.7m) exposed to a Pedro Neto (£5.7m) run in the closing stages.

The Portuguese winger came into Gameweek 13 inside the top five best-value midfielders of the season (offering 9.6 points per million spent) and, by netting at Molineux took his attacking returns tally there to four in his last five.

Whether Chelsea’s defence can be trusted against West Ham is, of course, now under scrutiny in the Fantasy community while upcoming meetings with Aston Villa (home) and Manchester City (home) are also somewhat ominous.

Chilwell might have done enough to earn a stay of execution though, topping this game for key passes thanks to his involvement in corners and Chelsea’s persistence on playing the ball down their left-flank, producing his first attacking return since Gameweek 8.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Saïss, Coady, Boly; Marçal, Neves, Dendoncker (Otasowie 46′), Semedo; Podence (Vitinha 90′), F Silva (A Traoré 61′), Neto.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): E Mendy; Chilwell, T Silva, Zouma, R James; Havertz (Havertz 71′), Kanté, Mount; Pulisic, Giroud (Abraham 71′), Werner.

There's a myth that Free Hit is only a week's play. It's not.

Different FH strategies deploy a whole different plan and pool of players for a handful of weeks before the GW in which you use the Free Hit.

I don't like GW18 too much and the teams in there, that's exactly why I want to use FH there and not plan to get those players for Free Transfers. 3-4 free transfers are more valuable than an FH for me.

Morning, only just now did I learn that there is a BGW18 and DGW19. Sorry, are you saying that you will be using the FH in 18? When else would have been a different time to play the FH?

Yup, FH18 for me as things stand.

You could also play FH in DGW19 and get 11 DGWers on FH.

Either strategy for GW18/19 have their pros and cons. Not commonly thought but I have seen many sides manipulate their team for BGW and DGW weeks. AND IT ALL GOES HORRIBLY WRONG

I agree. Gotta weigh in the pros and cons of the weeks before and after the FH chip as well.

      Agreed!

Ill have a very different looking team in GW20 and leading upto the BGW18 depending on whether I plan to FH in 18 or 19.

I have to see which team I'm happier with leading upto the blanks and also from GW20 onwards.

    Morning guys,

Hope your week is going well. Would like to hear your thoughts on the below please. Have been absolutely swamped with work with the run-in to Christmas and have had no time to properly think about FPL so I would be very grateful to hear your opinions.

    Martinez
Chilwell - James* - Lamptey (Mitchell* - Ferguson)
    Salah - KDB - Bruno - Son - Grealish
    DCL - Bamford (Brewster)
    2FTs, £0.0itb

    A. Upgrade bench - James + Mitchell > C.Taylor + £4.8 (Coufal?)
    B. James > Dier and bank FT but no bench still

Hey man, understand your issues, I am stuck with a lot of work too!

Your transfers should probably now depend on your blank and DGW strategy.

Do you have your first WC in pocket?

Hi, thought so now to be honest. I have used my first WC. Seen someone suggesting using the second WC in 17, then FH 18, then BB in 19. Problem is, I think using the second WC so early will come back to bite me down the line

Yeah I don't think these blanks and DGWs require the use of a second WC. It depends on what you want to do and have.

Looking at your team, you already have 6 players that play in blank 18. Fielding out 9-10 in 18 and FH in DGW19 might be the way to go for you, Have a look at diff strategies though

Is it worth getting a GK just for bench boost if I don't want rotating GK's later?
It's 1 transfer to bring him in and 1 to bring him out... I don't see the point, I think we can usually say an FT is worth 4 points so would need 8 points from the GK which won't be easy

I wouldn't based on the fact that I don't personally like switching premiums in such short spans of time. I guess you picked KDB for a reason, so maybe just see it through? City have good fixtures (yeah, WBA was meant to be one of them). Salah has been good over Christmas though in the past, so who knows.

who would be your FH front 7 in DGW19? Spurs play Sheffield so i'll be keeping Son and Kane,
i already have Bruno and City have Palace at home so i'm keeping KDB.
Already have Bamford and got DCL at 7m and at the moment hes a season keeper for me.
Which basically just leaves me with one free spot.

Sterling or Aguero/Jesus will definitely be in against Brighton at home.
DCL and one Wolves mid are good options. So is Zaha against Arsenal.
Newcastle could keep a CS against Sheffield so a defender for sure.

        I have
PVA Wilson Richarlison Mahrez Lamptey KDB for GW 18.
Will probably Add Sterling City defender and Spurs triple for free.
All this with Bruno on the bench and FH for GW19.

The wealth of options for GW19 has a higher upside for my team... So leaning towards a FH for 19.

    Martinez
    Chilwell Dias Lamptey
    Salah KDB Bruno Grealish Zaha
    DCL Bamford

    (Steer Brewster Kilman Mitchell)
    0.6m

Save FT for GW14 if no injuries or anything?

Will sell Lamptey in GW15 for either Dier or Dallas/Coufal depending on my BGW18 & DGW19 strategy.

Almost exactly the same as my team (except your Zaha is my Soucek & your Kilman is my Justin).

I'm going to watch the Spurs game and if they do well I might just bring Kane in before GW16 and maybe even captain him v's Leic.

My transfers would be Chilly > James & DCL > Kane (-4)

Good moves. I had the option of going Soucek last week but I opted for Zaha as he just seems to have better points potential.

I just can't bring myself to get Zaha - due to previous seasons letting me down. But I just can't justify it anymore as he is doing so well. I'm just cutting off my my nose to spite my face I think

Is there a simple list available of who has this DGW coming up and who blanks? Or just tell me who I need...

There'll be plenty of articles coming once the news has been digested and the scout team have done their research and writing.

      Be patient my friend 🙂

    Hi Guys

Is there likely to be another large double gameweek like GW19 further down the season? Or do you think this is the main one for the season?

Was hoping for more teams to have 2 easy fixtures likes West Ham, but it seems most teams have one easy, one tricky

    Thanks

Almost definitely will be further DGW's further down the line.

FA Cup always causes some blanks and doubles, it's unavoidable

Thank you. I am for the most part happy with my team so reluctant to do extensive surgery to my team this time if there is the potential for better opportunities down the line. Probably do the free hit in GW18 and get 2 more West Ham players ahead of GW19

What to do with this? (bar no suspensions and injuries of course)

    Martinez (Forster)
    Lamptey Justin Zouma (KWP Mitchell)
    Salah KdB Bruno Son Grealish
    Watkins DCL (Brewster)

0,1m in bank and 2FT. No idea how to use them. All thoughts well apprecieated. Thanks!

Mitchell and Justin too 2 cheap playing 4.4/4.5 defenders?

This is one of those weeks where I'm so happy I didn't do something. I was on the verge of swapping Reguilon for Dias. Now I know that Reguilon may blank, but the fact that I avoided an own goal and I banked another transfer for next week feels so good!

Yep. In a game of luck and probability you get the dark side and the good side.

My pal brought in Dias & R James for a hit this week. Sure he's not feeling great today

My plan was Chilwell and Boly to Dias and James - for a hit, but luckily changed my mind to Boly to James only

Cresswell and kdb > Coufal and salah For free

Thinking here is I really don’t see kdb coming to life anytime soon and Ill want salah for gw 15 anyway and this is the easiest way for me to free up funds and also keep a dgw player

If the immaculate crosses KDB delivered last night had been converted he would have hauled and you wouldnt even consider transferring him out.

Yes but almost 12m for deep crosses isn't great value regardless ? Plus that fixture last night was arguably the easiest on paper that he had all December with the form WBA were in

Yep fair comment. Very odd situation given the pedigree Man City have built up on finishing KDB chances.

I understand that, I’ve watched their last 2 games and I just done think he looks great, doesn’t pass the eye test for me, they don’t have anyone coming back to convert the chances either except a broken aguero

So given Walker played 14 minutes yesterday and Mendy got subbed off for him at 76, while Cancelo played the entire 90

We would assume Cancelo gets benched for the next game and then returns for Newcastle right?

Right now, Pep can't afford to worry about rest nearly as much as normal. I think that makes it even more dangerous to use minutes in one game as a predictor for minutes in the next

Was going to save the FT this week unless there were major injuries. Thoughts?

    Martinez
    Bednarek / Justin / Lewis
    Salah / Lookman / Fernandes / Grealish / KDB
    Kane / Bamford

    Subs: Button / Brewster / Balbuena / 3.8

Will WC in GW16. Which is the best combo for the next 2? 2FT, 0.2 ITB

      McCarthy Steer
      Chilwell Cancelo Justin Taylor Douglas
      Salah Bruno Son Mahrez Bissouma
      Vardy Bamford Watkins

      A) Mahrez (sou, NEW), Vardy (tot, MUN) - current option, allows for an upgrade in defence (i.e Justin -> Konsa/Stones/Dier)
      B) Grealish (wba, CPL), Kane (LEI, wol) - talisman long-term options that actually have good fixtures already now
      C) Mane (cpl, WBA), Wilson (FUL, mci) - the punty one, likely moving Wilson -> Adams (ful) for gw15. No possibilities for upgrade in defence though

KDB + Brewster => Souček + Kane makes sense for free?

Also leave me 0.3 for Mitchell => Lewis

      Mendy
      Chilwell | Targett | Reguilon
      Salah | KDB | B.Fernandes | Son | Grealish
      DCL | Bamford

      Forster | Dallas | Brewster | Mitchell

Planning to bring in Charlie Taylor but should his DGW be even considering a DGW?...
West Ham and Liverpool away, things could get ugly...
