Giroud outshines Werner again as Chelsea regress at both ends of the pitch

Wolves 2-1 Chelsea

  • Goals: Daniel Podence (£5.4m), Pedro Neto (£5.7m) | Olivier Giroud (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Owen Otasowie (£4.5m), Vitinha (£4.8m) | Ben Chilwell (£6.2m)
  • Bonus points: Podence x3, Neto x2, Chilwell x1

GIROUD NOT TO

Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) is fast becoming the key Fantasy Premier League forward at Chelsea as Timo Werner (£9.4m) continues to struggle in wide areas.

The former Arsenal striker scored the Blues’ only goal of the game as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Wolves, the second in his last three Premier League starts.

And if you go back to the beginning of Project Restart, no Chelsea player has found the net more often than Giroud (eight goals), who is working his way back to the top of the pecking order.

The Frenchman has started each of the last three Premier League matches for Frank Lampard’s side, lasting 90 minutes once and having his minutes managed around the 70-minute mark in two of them.

Any last remaining Werner owners who like the look of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures West Ham (home), Arsenal (away), Aston Villa (home) might do well to consider his signature – especially considering the German international is without a goal since Gameweek 8 and has blanked three times in the last four matches.

TRANSFER TIMO?

Werner’s biggest problem in recent outings has been how isolated Chelsea have left him on the flanks of the front-three, whether or not Lampard stations him on the left or right-hand side.

Against Wolves, Christian Pulisic‘s (£8.2m) first start since Gameweek 11 pushed Werner onto the right, where even his most insightful of runs were regularly ignored by his team-mates.

So much of Chelsea’s play went down the left-hand side through Pulisic who did provide some cut and thrust but, very soon, it became predictable and one-dimensional.

But the nail in Werner’s FPL coffin came after Lampard switched his wingers, allowing the former RB Leipzig man some time on the left of the front-three, only for Chelsea to send everything down the right-hand side through Pulisic again.

“Pulisic provides us with some width and he’s very good at winning his one-on-ones. He’s had a few issues with the hamstring but he’s trained so he’s straight back in.” – Frank Lampard

It is certainly worth adding that Chelsea sorely miss Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m), Lampard’s side resembling the laboured outfit from the early weeks of the season during the Moroccan’s last injury.

“No (there wasn’t enough) after the goal. We didn’t hang on either. Performance (has changed). It’s what gives you results. Maybe the lads think they’re playing well and the second you think you’re playing well, anything can happen.” – Frank Lampard

CATCHING A CHILL

Despite a recent speight of clean sheets, Chelsea’s defensive credentials have taken a knock in their last two matches.

Between Gameweeks 6 and 10, the Blues conceded just one goal, letting in three since the start of Gameweek 12.

Giving up a lead at Molineux given Wolves’ current state of affairs is also rather alarming.

Before Tuesday night, they were yet to find the net in a game which Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) had not started this season.

Not including Fantasy assists, the Mexican was involved in a significant 31% of Wolves’ 109 Premier League goals since promotion before Gameweek 13 – so he has been a huge miss.

Accordingly, when Daniel Podence (£5.4m) cut inside Reece James (£5.3m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.2m) and fired past Edouard Mendy (£5.2m) it ended Wolves’ longest run without a Premier League goal since their promotion in 2018 (296 minutes).

Wolves chose James’ flank as one to target as they wound through the gears in the final third of the match, the right-back escaping a penalty thanks to the VAR, but leaving Kurt Zouma (£5.7m) exposed to a Pedro Neto (£5.7m) run in the closing stages.

The Portuguese winger came into Gameweek 13 inside the top five best-value midfielders of the season (offering 9.6 points per million spent) and, by netting at Molineux took his attacking returns tally there to four in his last five.

Whether Chelsea’s defence can be trusted against West Ham is, of course, now under scrutiny in the Fantasy community while upcoming meetings with Aston Villa (home) and Manchester City (home) are also somewhat ominous.

Chilwell might have done enough to earn a stay of execution though, topping this game for key passes thanks to his involvement in corners and Chelsea’s persistence on playing the ball down their left-flank, producing his first attacking return since Gameweek 8.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Saïss, Coady, Boly; Marçal, Neves, Dendoncker (Otasowie 46′), Semedo; Podence (Vitinha 90′), F Silva (A Traoré 61′), Neto.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): E Mendy; Chilwell, T Silva, Zouma, R James; Havertz (Havertz 71′), Kanté, Mount; Pulisic, Giroud (Abraham 71′), Werner.

Any advice for those without a freehit?

Fielding 8-9 in 18 and taking a hit or two for 19 and using TC/BB is my initial thought

Other is to simply wildcard in 19. Field a full 11 in 18 but this lacks using a chip

    BB DWG19 hype, worth it?

Most of us can only field 11 dgw players with 5FT from now to gw19, also don't forget possible injuries / bad form / covid etc...

If you have to take -4 to upgrade each bench player to use BB, would you still do it? -4 for a player who plays 2 matches, with xP = 8 points for example, you gain only 4 points per player, which is the same as when you BB single GW. You will need to WC GW20 as well.

    1. Camzy

I'm gonna do it I think. I can field 13 DGW guys with some modest hits. And then I don't mind a WC in GW20 because it would allow me to fix my core structure (bring back my 3.9m fodders and useless 8th attacker).

    2. Pompel
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Not only a -4 to upgrade to playing bench, but also taking around £1m off budget to upgrade likes of Steer and Mitchell

      1. Who are all Lukakus
        • 7 Years

right, by focusing money on XI I can have a little better XI for GW19.
I think I will focus on getting 11 main DGW players from now to GW17. FH GW18 of course. Then prior to GW19 I will decide to play BB (take -8 hits with 3 transfers to upgrade bench fodders) or not (keep it as it is). It is safe.

I won't be. I'll be wildcarding in 15/16, FH18 and then just a standard 11, made up mainly of DGWers in 19 (probably only Kane from the SGW camp). There'll be more doubles, and I'll use my second WC later on to prepare for my BB then, when players are less likely to be rotated too.

They're actually more likely to be rotated in the latter doubles than in 19 because there could well be less to play for a DGW in 37 could be worthless for a team like Crystal Palace who could be 13th with nothing left to play for.

    A) KDB + Lewis (in a 4 4 2/ Lewis rotating)

Plus B gives me more flexibility to use the extra funds. Just worried about KDB's fixtures and Podence as a playing 4th mid. Although he is doing really good for his price.

I did ten years ago when I created this acc! Nowadays sadly he does seem a shadow of his former self. Harboured a bit of home that he could rediscover himself with the move but doesn't even look like making his way into the starting 11.

Maximising points for individual chips and maximising your total points for the season aren’t always the same. There’s a lot to consider for this

You're right. A couple of seasons ago I went all in on trying to avoid using FH in a blank and I think the only player to score well in that week was the one everyone had as a captain.

Usually I prefer to play FH in a DGW myself as you're attacking that week rather than playing defensive in a BGW.

It’s the bench boost especially. Having to either waste your second wildcard so early or carry the extra value on the bench if you don’t just to ‘Maximise’ the bench boost (how many points are your worst 4 DGW players getting you anyway)

So looks like we’re going to have 5 GWs of chip strategy chat now!

Pretty sure I’m going to build with transfers for DGW19 and use FH for GW18 and maybe BB or TC in 19.

    Players I have so far:

BGW18: KDB, DCL, Martinez, Grealish, Wilson

DGW19: Salah, Robbo, Chilwell, Bruno, Cresswell, KWP, Bamford, Stephens + SGW players: KDB, DCL, Martinez, Grealish, Wilson

Main transfer targets: Kane/ Son before GW16, Ings/ Adams, Dallas, Soucek

Potential to be dropped: Wilson, DCL, KDB (maybe!!), Grealish

    Thought process makes sense?

    1. Boom XhakaLacaSaka

Think I'm gunna try to build a team for BB in the first DGW, but the one mistake I'm not making which I seem to do every year is to max out on DGWers at the expense of some prime SGW options.

It must be said that BB has been my (emphasis) most valuable chip BY A MILE - I've had a 137 point mega haul one season, and I got 110points last year and I think I've had one other 100+pter if my memory serves.

However, I've often got red arrows around that GW due to losing prime options just for that short term DGW-BB fix. Need to modify my strategy a bit even if it means getting a slightly lesser haul on DGW.

I reckon the misuse of stats and overthinking are two of the most obvious outcomes of all the FPL-related content that's spewed forth nowadays.

Do people score more points on average now than they did seven or eight years ago, or are they scoring the same but just feeling more FOMO and jealously?

    1. thegaffer82
      • 12 Years

Good question - but a bit of a red herring I think. The amount of points people score is way more dependent on the actual premier league players than us FPL managers.

All I can say is this; when I first started playing FPL, it was WAY EASIER to finish in the top 10k. You just needed to keep at it, make good decisions and get a wee bit of luck. Nowadays, even doing all those doesn't guarantee you a top 100k finish.

So, the skill level of managers and their dedication has risen considerably IMO

With all chips intact, is this is the way to go?

    WC 16
    FH 18
    BB 19

      Yeah pretty solid I think.

      You're in a great position.

Thanks! Didn't put a lot of thought into it so it's pretty straight forward - curious to hear about some alternative strategies as well

That’s the consensus but I’d be at least looking at a gwk16 wildcard draft that allows you to keep all other chips intact. That could be the real advantage of still having your first wildcard imo.

Agreed, I'll deffo be looking at long-term - but hard to look past FH in 18 with those fixtures, don't you think?

On the face of it, but could easily be one just as bad later in the season that we have less time to plan for. Feel like because Spurs and City are playing and have good fixtures gwk 19 we might be able to build a team (especially you with WC) that limits the damage of this blank/double and gives an big advantage in the later ones, where everything tends to be more of an unknown - you don’t know who is going through each round of the cup so hard to plan.

Very good points, thanks - will keep that in mind for sure. I've always saved my chips until the end of the season so it all makes a lot of sense to me

Anybody looking at Podence/Neto as enablers? Cheap. Play in the blank. Good gameweek 19 fixture.

They don't really make sense in the most popular FH18 strategy.

Had Podence for many weeks. I think I got one goal from him.

Whether it's the right decision or not, I won't be going back there.

Neto is an interesting proposition. He's someone I'm monitoring from afar

Cheers. Would be my Mahrez replacement, allowing me to get Salah in vs West Brom. Think it’s wishful thinking on my part that they’ll do well though.

So does the midfield that I should be trying to get look like: Bruno Salah KDB Son?

Depends on how important you think Kane is.

I'd rather Kane than Son personally.

      My MF is:
      Salah - KDB - Bruno - Grealish - Soucek
      (+ Kane - Bamford)
and I gotta say I'm more than happy with that for the time being

One Spurs attacker definitely, I have Salah - Sterling - Bruno - Neto - Lookman with Kane up front, depends how you want to cover your bases

Should I look to be getting in Dier and Son for GW16?

They're definitely good options and unlikely to be rotated.

If you have 2FT but only use one, does it go back to 2 next GW?

      Seriously!?

They had started to show big improvements I thought and were heading in the right direction.

A strange time to sack him after clear improvements and a very good draw at the Etihad.

I'd be lying if I said I understood that decision and it's timing

The decision was clearly made before hand and they anticipated a spanking by Coty. Very odd though, very good result yesterday.
I don’t like teams treating managers like crap, eg Watford for example, hopefully they go back down to where they came from

Ridculous. Gave him next to nothing to add to a team that just scraped promotion.
But ofc Big Sam will come in and sort out the defence. Then they'll give him a few quid in Jan window.
Think the Palace result did for Bilic and that was his team that laid down and died after the red card - not him

I hope the Yoyo club can now find a manager who won't get them promoted.
