My favourite teams to target for upcoming FPL Blank and Double Gameweeks

Fantasy Premier League managers can finally start pinpointing which teams to target for the Blank and Double Gameweeks.

That’s what I have spent the last day or so doing as we head into the busiest period of the football calendar.

The first thought that comes to me while looking at the fixtures is that the teams involved in Double Gameweek 19 will have plenty of motivation to play their best players and not rotate.

In recent years, the biggest Double of the campaign has come when a lot more places in the Premier League table were secure, reducing the importance of each game.

By contrast, very little will be settled come early January and we can surely expect fewer dead rubber games – which is great news for Fantasy managers.

And, handily enough, some of the popular teams with two fixtures in Double Gameweek 19 don’t have a particularly condensed schedule before and afterwards.

Teams with the best Blank and Double Gameweek fixtures

For example, Liverpool play a Premier League game on January 4 before an FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa on January 8, which they will surely use to rest key players or manage their minutes.

That precedes a lengthy for Liverpool, their next Premier League games coming in that Double Gameweek on a Sunday, January 17 and Thursday, January 21.

After that, the Reds have another FA Cup tie (if they go through) before their next league game on January 28.

You have to assume that, because of the cup ties and reasonable rest times between league outings, Liverpool rotation will be at a minimum for the games that matter to Fantasy managers.

Thankfully, Jurgen Klopp’s men have good fixtures in and around the Double Gameweek too. In fact, the Reds are second on the Season Ticker from now until Gameweek 17, so it looks like a good time to invest in key Liverpool assets if you are planning to Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18 and build a team for Double Gameweek 19 without a Wildcard.

Manchester United are in a similar category as Liverpool for me with decent Double Gameweek 19 fixtures on paper as well as an appealing schedule either side.

West Ham and Leeds also have really favourable fixtures in the bumper Gameweek.

Not only do they have a decent schedule before and after, these are two clubs that can offer decent budget options if you are looking to plan for a Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 19.

Both teams are fixture-less in Blank Gameweek 18 so if you do want to get Hammers and Whites in your team, you may be lighter that week and increase the need for a Free Hit chip.

What if I don’t want to use my Wildcard?

Kane and Son deliver again as Spurs prepare for appealing fixture swing

If you are hoping to navigate Double Gameweek 19 team without using a Wildcard, the teams we have already mentioned remain good sources for transfers but we should also consider Chelsea, Leicester and Southampton.

That said, those three clubs have mixed schedules before then, although they improve from Gameweek 20 onwards, so timing could be very important when transferring their players in.

When we are planning for the Blank and Double Gameweeks, we always have to make sure we do check the fixtures before and after so we don’t succumb to tunnel vision and fall into some traps.

It is worth noting Spurs have a good run of fixtures right until Double Gameweek 19 and do not blank in Blank Gameweek 18 either.

If you currently own five or so players from Manchester City, Spurs, Aston Villa and Everton, which is very likely given the template and some popular picks, I think you can get away with saving the Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18 and using it in when the FA Cup quarter-finals cause problems or for a Double Gameweek.

General tips for Blank and Double Gameweeks

Finally, here are some of my golden rules for planning to cope with Blank and Double Gameweeks.

  1. Don’t have a tunnel vision when choosing Double Gameweek players. Don’t just think about those who are playing twice – always look for those with appealing single Gameweek matches too.
  2. If you can field a decent Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 19 (which is possible with good bench fodder from Southampton, West Ham and Leeds United), use the chip. I have found that if you are building a team with your second Wildcard, it is much more effective when you don’t have to focus on the bench and can pump more into a strong set of 12 to 13 starting players.
  3. Don’t forget to get points now. More often than not, while we are focused on getting good players who play two games in the Double Gameweek, we tend to forget teams that have good fixtures right now. There are still five Gameweeks to be played before Double Gameweek 19 and while you make your transfers, make sure they have a good points potential for now as well. A good example of this from last year was when everyone was focusing on Liverpool players with a Double Gameweek. But, at that point, Manchester City were away at Aston Villa, which was a very appealing fixture at the time. I deviated from the Double Gameweek bandwagon and focused my transfer on getting points immediately: signing Sergio Aguero (£10.3m) and captaining his hat-trick.

That’s it from me at the moment. At the moment, this article is merely me loud-thinking while I glance at the fixture schedule first up. I need to delve further before I strengthen my plans for these Gameweeks.

I am expecting some old school ‘pen and paper’ transfer planning as I move ahead. I suggest you do the same. These scribbles always help. Good luck and see you next week.

any obvious moves this week? Have 2FT + 1.3m itb, do I start to fix bench in the leadup to DGW

    Martinez
    Robbo Coufal Taylor
    Salah Kdb Bruno Grealish
    DCL Bamford Wilson
    Steer Soucek Ayling Mitchell

Will give Wilson another week before looking to move to Ings (or Antonio) in gw15. Kdb to Son looks tempting gw15 as well.
    Anything this week??

Leeds creating a lot of chances every game. Their fixtures arguably better than Leicester. Both have a blank 18 and I think Leeds have a better looking DGW. I'd be tempted to go for it and use the cash elsewhere!

Why is "Most Valuable Teams" a thing on the official game's status Sage? Is there a prize for that or something?

So often I see a team in that list that is taking -20 hits (or much more), and often for weeks at a time. Their value is sky high, but they're ranked 5m+.

its pretty crap, but spurs and city have nice fixtures. Add in Neto and Zaha and the attack looks decent, Kun could even be an option. Just gotta be a bit creative with the defence, one Spurs, maybe Ramsdale, Clyne etc

defence sorts itself out no? Reguilon + Dias + Cancelo/Walker

Midfield can go KDB Son maybe Sterling? Dont really trust anyone else. Zaha is quiet now with hard fixtures, Podence and Neto could be a shout but who knows how they continue without a forward.

Everton probably wont score a ton against Wolves and their defence is better but hit or miss. Sheffield Newcastle is blah.

Forwards can go Wilson Kane DCL but dont expect them to be goal fests tbh

I really want to get Kane back to my team. Would you do:
Grealish + DCL to kane + 6.2 mid?
Thinking maybe getting curtis jones as the current injury situation is making him play regularly. But then again that will force me to use a transfer once he is getting benched again as bissouma just isnt appealing. Can also jump on a Leeds player, but im not so sure about that in the long run.

    Also considering doing:
Bissouma + DCL to brewster and Bruno.

That will cover all the Bruno pickers and i can play 3-5-2 with a great midfield packed with lots of potensial points and keep my dearest robbo. But my attack will be really cheap with Watkins - Bamford and Adams

Do you have a decent 4+ defenders as Brewster is really naff?

I've been playing 3-5-2 but my 1st bench slot is generally my 4th def - works OK but tbh I've been thinking about going back to a 3-4-3 then Antonio is back.

If Brewster is 1st sub you are probably better with Bissouma!

I have no extra defenders with the 3-5-2 team, so basically i would be ditching subs for the sake of having all the big mids + grealish. The 3-4-3 team with either a 6.2 mid or Jones would let me have bissouma as the sub, but with kane up top for grealish. So i more or less decide between kane vs Bruno where 1 is currently a diff and the other is on every team (atleast in my ML, they all have him.

My teams would either be like this:

        Martinez
        Robbo - Cresswell - Chilwell
        Kdb - Bruno - Salah - Son
        Watkins - Bamford - Adams

        Or

        Martinez
        Robbo - Cresswell - Chilwell
        Kdb - Bruno - Salah - Son - Grealish
        Bamford - adams

And brewster and bissouma as subs

yeah, I think Curtis rather than bissouma is good. I assume you use bissouma as your 5th midfielder anyway right? so he can just replace bissouma place there, don't need to worry about transfer him right after he gets benched again. as injuries are so unpredictable this season, I think Jones has better potential now. plus he's 0.1m cheaper.

but for 6.2m mid, soucek and neto come to mind. and also cavaleiro might be a good differential, he plays upfront but the downside is, of course, it's Fulham.

I don't mind Watkins-Bamford-Adams as your attacks, they might be cheap but they have potential now. that means you can have a premium midfield anyway right

      1. maditass
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Curtis would play as my 4th mid and bissouma would be the cover and if i do that move, i could possibly keep DCL and get kane for Bamford or adams (most likely adams as fixtures is bad going forward and Bamford is worth to keep). Though, that would leave me with 0.1 itb when i would need to replace Jones and I'll end up having to play bissouma every week untill i get to fix it. Hard to choose.
Im rank 70k and this feels abit punty

I'd probably swap lamptey for someone like coufal, lamptey is a great player but brighton don't tend to get any clean sheets (other than tonight), robbo seems overpriced so far this season, could downgrade to james and give yourself a couple of million itb - but both 'luxury' moves so could just do your taylor transfer and see how things go for now

    Hi DZ.

Do you think if you'd stopped playing FPL for a year then you'll realise you didn't like it that much and were just obsessed, or would you miss it like crazy ?

    1. Mile Plankton
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

I stopped for a few of years since it became to much of an obsession. Didn't really miss it, stoped watching smaller games and generaly stopped carring about football that much. Pretty liberating.

Mates forced me to play this season and the obsession starts again. So I need to beat them all to shut them up, and I won't be playing again.

    Mccarthy
    Dias Chilwell Lamptey (Cresswell Mitchell)
    KDB Mahrez Grealish Bruno (Bissouma)
    Kane DCL Bamford

Still have first WC left and 2 FT, trying to figure out how to get in Salah

    a) Kane Mahrez > Salah Wilson/Watkins for free
    b) Kane Bissouma Chilwell > Salah Dallas/Targett Brewster for 4pt hit (would mean 3-5-2 with mid of KDB Mahrez Salah Bruno Grealish)

I was planning on getting rid of Mahrez with a) but since he got rested he may haul vs. southampton making it a harder choice imo

wouldn't transfer out Kane with his fixtures to come and he plays in gameweek 18 which is an advantage.

agree about mahrez, give him one more game.

you could do something like DCL to Brewster this week, then after next week do Chilwell to a 4.4 defender and Mahrez to Salah?

is there any specific optimal time to play a bench boost?

obviously in the week where half the teams have a double gameweek if you could have subs with double gameweeks that'd be great but i'm not going to be able to do that as i don't have a wildcard.

This week I have Lewis (Ful H) Zaha (Liv H) and Targett (WBA A) as my three subs. And some non playing 4.0 goalkeeper, tempted to just use my bench boost and try and get some extra points.

    Bad idea?

i get that but you can't choose your entire squad in wildcard out of ensuring you only have 3 players from the non double gameweek 19 teams (man city, spurs, arsenal, crystal palace, wolves, villa etc

You get a 2ng wc gw17 and they'll be another fairly large dgw late season - I've never used my BB except on a DGW although not necessarily on DGW players - often there are nice sgw games - e.g. I plan to still play Kane v shu gw19

tbh though other than dgw season I rarely have a full playing bench - e.g. atm I have 3.8m wonderkid Douglas and scrub keeper

    5. lugs
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

its only a bad idea because you don't have another goalkeeper, people say dgw's are the optimal time to use it which makes sense but it doesn't always work out that way

i used BB in gw 1 a couple of years ago and totally nailed it with 30 something points, i know others on here did the same and scored even more, so imo single gw's are fine to use it as long as you have a decent bench with good fixtures

My worry about building for a bench boost is it's going to hurt my first 11 for 5 weeks while I build it and then another 5 while I dismantle it again.

This makes me not want to use it yet as I feel the benchboost won't repay the lost points so will try and build team value to use it later in the season.

Randolph was on the bench against Palace, suggesting Martin is 3rd choice.

Consider Verrips (SHU) -- he has been on the bench for them most of the season. I was going to bring him in on WC until I decided not to go with a 4.0 keeper.
