My favourite teams to target for upcoming FPL Blank and Double Gameweeks

Fantasy Premier League managers can finally start pinpointing which teams to target for the Blank and Double Gameweeks.

That’s what I have spent the last day or so doing as we head into the busiest period of the football calendar.

The first thought that comes to me while looking at the fixtures is that the teams involved in Double Gameweek 19 will have plenty of motivation to play their best players and not rotate.

In recent years, the biggest Double of the campaign has come when a lot more places in the Premier League table were secure, reducing the importance of each game.

By contrast, very little will be settled come early January and we can surely expect fewer dead rubber games – which is great news for Fantasy managers.

And, handily enough, some of the popular teams with two fixtures in Double Gameweek 19 don’t have a particularly condensed schedule before and afterwards.

Teams with the best Blank and Double Gameweek fixtures

For example, Liverpool play a Premier League game on January 4 before an FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa on January 8, which they will surely use to rest key players or manage their minutes.

That precedes a lengthy for Liverpool, their next Premier League games coming in that Double Gameweek on a Sunday, January 17 and Thursday, January 21.

After that, the Reds have another FA Cup tie (if they go through) before their next league game on January 28.

You have to assume that, because of the cup ties and reasonable rest times between league outings, Liverpool rotation will be at a minimum for the games that matter to Fantasy managers.

Thankfully, Jurgen Klopp’s men have good fixtures in and around the Double Gameweek too. In fact, the Reds are second on the Season Ticker from now until Gameweek 17, so it looks like a good time to invest in key Liverpool assets if you are planning to Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18 and build a team for Double Gameweek 19 without a Wildcard.

Manchester United are in a similar category as Liverpool for me with decent Double Gameweek 19 fixtures on paper as well as an appealing schedule either side.

West Ham and Leeds also have really favourable fixtures in the bumper Gameweek.

Not only do they have a decent schedule before and after, these are two clubs that can offer decent budget options if you are looking to plan for a Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 19.

Both teams are fixture-less in Blank Gameweek 18 so if you do want to get Hammers and Whites in your team, you may be lighter that week and increase the need for a Free Hit chip.

What if I don’t want to use my Wildcard?

Kane and Son deliver again as Spurs prepare for appealing fixture swing

If you are hoping to navigate Double Gameweek 19 team without using a Wildcard, the teams we have already mentioned remain good sources for transfers but we should also consider Chelsea, Leicester and Southampton.

That said, those three clubs have mixed schedules before then, although they improve from Gameweek 20 onwards, so timing could be very important when transferring their players in.

When we are planning for the Blank and Double Gameweeks, we always have to make sure we do check the fixtures before and after so we don’t succumb to tunnel vision and fall into some traps.

It is worth noting Spurs have a good run of fixtures right until Double Gameweek 19 and do not blank in Blank Gameweek 18 either.

If you currently own five or so players from Manchester City, Spurs, Aston Villa and Everton, which is very likely given the template and some popular picks, I think you can get away with saving the Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18 and using it in when the FA Cup quarter-finals cause problems or for a Double Gameweek.

General tips for Blank and Double Gameweeks

Finally, here are some of my golden rules for planning to cope with Blank and Double Gameweeks.

  1. Don’t have a tunnel vision when choosing Double Gameweek players. Don’t just think about those who are playing twice – always look for those with appealing single Gameweek matches too.
  2. If you can field a decent Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 19 (which is possible with good bench fodder from Southampton, West Ham and Leeds United), use the chip. I have found that if you are building a team with your second Wildcard, it is much more effective when you don’t have to focus on the bench and can pump more into a strong set of 12 to 13 starting players.
  3. Don’t forget to get points now. More often than not, while we are focused on getting good players who play two games in the Double Gameweek, we tend to forget teams that have good fixtures right now. There are still five Gameweeks to be played before Double Gameweek 19 and while you make your transfers, make sure they have a good points potential for now as well. A good example of this from last year was when everyone was focusing on Liverpool players with a Double Gameweek. But, at that point, Manchester City were away at Aston Villa, which was a very appealing fixture at the time. I deviated from the Double Gameweek bandwagon and focused my transfer on getting points immediately: signing Sergio Aguero (£10.3m) and captaining his hat-trick.

That’s it from me at the moment. At the moment, this article is merely me loud-thinking while I glance at the fixture schedule first up. I need to delve further before I strengthen my plans for these Gameweeks.

I am expecting some old school ‘pen and paper’ transfer planning as I move ahead. I suggest you do the same. These scribbles always help. Good luck and see you next week.

Will you BB this team in 19? I can slowly getting those players. I have 8 of them already.

    McCarthy, Meslier*
    James, Chillwell, Dallas, Fofona*, Coufal*
    Salah, KDB, Bruno, Maddison*, Bowen*
    Bamford, Antonio* (if fit), Adams*

Those with stars are who I would get. Please help.

Aint bad. But you see after Gw20 there is a lot of value tied on the bench

Can do someone like Bowen to Bissouma, Chillwell to 3.9'er.
Or WC? but wouldn't need to when I have core premiums of mid and defense.

I’d have soucek in there which lots of folk have as 8th attacker already and a 4.5 instead of a 4m on bench, don’t think it’s a massive issue

      James Chilwell coufal Vestergaard Dallas
      Salah Bruno son Bowen Lookman
      Vardy Bamford Adams

One question mate, I have 2 FT with nothing to do.
                McCarthy
                Chillwell, James, Targett
                Son, KDB, Salah, Bruno(c), Grealish
                Wilson, Bamford

                Subs: Forster, Dallas, Brewster, Dunne
                0 itb.

Wanna get DGW 19 players but players I have are better on paper this week.
                (1) Wilson to Adams (sure wouldn't wanna lose Wilson before Fulham at home and Adams faces City)
                (2) Grealish to Bowen (Villa face WBA while Bowen is against Chelsea)

Thinking it hard and might do Grealish + Dunne to Bowen + Coufal and bench the latter. What do you think?
WBA with new manager factor (Big Sam). West Ham might nick a goal I suspect as Chelsea has been conceding in the last two.

                Thanks in advance.

That’s really tough. Don’t think I’d do either of those moves, would rather take a -4 down the line to get dgwer instead. Could just burn transfer this week. Think you’re well set up for 19 - we have very similar teams.

Having followed the Hammers game last night, all I can say is that once Antonio is back that attack will be potent... they always look like they can score against the big teams, and that they can roll the weaker ones. Belief is not something Upton Park had too often, but after the move maybe?

I'd have to get rid of grealish or kdb to fit in players on bench and that's just something I'm not willing to do for now considering their fixtures after the double ends. I can wildcard in later doubles and bench boost then.

There's not really a fixture turn. The only difficult fixtures for either are Chelsea who aren't doing so swell right now. KDB has the easiest fixtures ever. Grealish has United who suck in defence and Spurs in the week most of us will FH and not have him in our teams anyways.

The template is still firing. I'd still want DCL, Bamford, Brewster, Salah KDB, Bruno, Son, Grealish, Reece, Dier, Dias, Coufal, Martinez and Johnstone as soon as GW21, and it's near impossible to get my team back if I remove more than one of those

So I'll just get Bellerin and Jagielka in GW16 for Reece and Douglas, have 10 players in GW18, FH for GW19 (Rashford, Cresswell, Robbo, Reece), and then switch Bellerin back to Reece in GW21 with 2 FTs

I know this is the biggest DGW of the season, but I don't like the fixtures enough to BB. The matchups for cheap assets outside West Ham seem quite unpredictable, so I'll try to max out my high team value with a FH instead on the most reliable/explosive assets, then combine TC, WC and BB later in the season, with even more TV. 2nd WC would be useful when this template finally shifts, if ever

Getting Bellerin! Not selling that to me I’m afraid. West Ham Southampton Leeds are very decent options for bench boost

I understand why you don't want Bellerin, and that's fine

West Ham, yes. Leeds and S'oton become problematic except if you're using your WC immediately after to return to the template... Which brings restrictions as there have been many high price rises this season. You'd have to lose someone and go one rung lower

For those planning to do this, DCL to Adams could be the answer

            Just not for me

I’ve already done DCL to Adams recently and fairly well set up with 8dgwers and 2ft currently. Means I can get 14 dgwers and son for 19 with just a -4. Bench boost could be very nice even if it means a -4 in gw20

Agreed, it is team dependant. Just feel it’s a great opportunity to get a decent bench boost in which might not happen later in the season. And still time to plan for it

That's the issue I guess, 3-4-3 with cheap strikers like Adams, Bamford etc got overlooked massively by what Brewster could have allowed... didn't happen, time to move on from brewster imo

I'm not overlooking 3-4-3 because I want Brewster

I'm keeping my 3-5-2 and Brewster allows me to have a regular 1-pointer if I ever need my second/third sub. Could even downgrade him to 4.3 and still have 2 playing subs

My midfield is Salah KDB Bruno Son Grealish, as I listed out in my original post. Which of these would you remove for a long-term cheap striker?

Well I have 6 of those players in my post-WC team, so if that's any help, great 🙂
Only lost .3 in the swaps and expect .2 back later tonight. Funny actually... I had pennies left for two defender slots, hit auto pick and wouldn't you know it, two names that had been on my mind over the last few weeks but whom I had neglected to put on my watch list... fate.

How would you fit in Son (or Kane)?

I had the thought of Chilwell, Grealish, Wilson > Reece, Son, Dec-Reid, but that'd be better suited for a couple gws from now. 2FTs, 0.1itb

        McCarthy, Forster
        Chilwell, Lamptey, Targett, KWP, Kilman
        Salah, KDB, Bruno, Grealish, Soucek
        DCL, Wilson, Bamford

Imo you can make a very solid GW 19 team which is also good for future fixtures whereas this isnt so true for GW 18 fixtures. Also Free hitting in GW 19 prevents the use of a TC or BB which kinda sucks

For us without 1st WC, I am between 2 options:
                  A) Start planning for DGW19 buying players already and Play FH18
                  B) Field around 6-7 players in gw18 and then around 6 players with dgw and 5 with single gw in gw19

I'm between A and C - survive GW18 and FH GW19 to maximize that week. Tough decision but I can afford to bank the FT this GW so that's what I'll do, leave it for later.

Agree with this surprised more are not advocating FH in 19, you can wait until all press conferences to maximise the team and for me easy to have 9 out in blank week which will be fine, none of those fixtures worry me particularly.

Also I'd rather save 2nd wildcard and bench boost for more traditional late season doubles

Are we speding too much time pouring over premiums, and neglecting other parts of the game like transfer use, price points, formation, mid and long term player holding and acquisition. And can ask this give us a bigger overall edge than sinking our time and energy into the big hitters

At any given time, there's always something that the major content creators are mainly focused on (often dictated by the main types of listener questions they get). For several weeks it has been which premiums to own, and now it's turned overnight to the DGWs and chip strategy. Some of the pundits do recognise this and remind us (for example) not to ignore good SGW players or players with good short-term fixtures out of an excessive focus on the DGWs.

In some ways, it's fortunate that there are always aspects of the game that are being largely ignored; otherwise it would be incredibly hard to find good differentials. Those are places where managers who enjoy thinking for themselves can seek an edge. For example, at the beginning of this season I bought into the dogma that transfers spent on defenders are a waste. I no longer believe this, and as a result I've recently sought to find defenders who have good fixture runs that are being ignored.

All about chip strategy? Start preparing now! Much of this is team dependent but thoughts on bb vs tc in 19 and when to use FH?

Are we looking to FH in the BGW and attack the upcoming DGW with another chip? Are there any reasonable TC candidates? Is it a good gamewek to BB?

BB or TC Salah probably in 19?

Maybe not a question but more of a suggestion...could the (members') season ticker be developed further such that you could exclude particular gameweeks? For instance, I plan to Free Hit in Blank GW18. It would therefore be really useful to look at the season ticker excluding this GW...

I have been rolling with a power 4 of KDB, Bruno, Son, and Kane, but I live in fear of every Salah touch. What’s the tipping point to getting him in, especially if it means losing 2 of the 4 above?

One more for good measure: I haven’t heard anyone mention their plans from GW20 onward. How much will those fixtures factor into your BGW/DGW plans? Anyone thinking of doing FH/BB/WC in 18/19/20?

Start preparing for DGW19 now or chill out and use the valuable 2nd wildcard in GW17?

                    FH GW18 feels inevitable.
