Scoutcast Episode 357 – Double and Blank Gameweek planning

Joe is joined by FPL Family’s Sam and Ted Talks FPL’s Ted to look ahead to Gameweek 14 and the impending Blank and Double Gameweek fixtures.

Fantasy Premier League managers already have plenty to consider with fixtures arriving thick and fast at this busy festive period in the season.

And now they have Blank and Double Gameweeks to ponder, after the Premier League announced details of a limited set of fixtures in Gameweek 18 and a bumper crop of extra games in Gameweek 19.

How FPL managers tackle this tricky period in the season largely depends on their current set-up and chip availability.

Joe, Sam and Ted look in detail at the different strategies to consider as well as the best players to target.

Ted is building up a reputation for presenting smart FPL-related graphics across social media. We grabbed the opportunity to find out more about his latest images, which look at the best chance creators and most obliging defences.

In all the excitement over the Double Gameweek, our trio present a timely reminder of the sides with one fixture in Gameweek 19 that cannot be ignored, most notably Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Sam takes her turn to pick a differential, there are festive fixtures to frisk, and captaincy and transfer plans to reveal.

The episode was streamed live on Thursday night during Manchester United’s trip to relegation candidates Sheffield United. With Red Devils star Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) captained by Sam and Joe, viewers get to see their live reaction to the midfielder’s pivotal performance during an already low-scoring Gameweek 13 for many.

Nice advice from Ben Crellin I read this morning.

    - Defer your plans on 18/19 until next week at the earliest.
    - Try to roll FT this week and then decide on a direction later.

There is a chance after the league cup quarters, that some games might be moved into 18 or 19.Basically, BUR - MUN has a decent chance of being put in GW18, and MCI - AVL might even make a double in GW19. That will likely seriously alter plans.

Personally, I'm gonna defer two weeks. Roll FT this week. Do a very passive Lamptey > Coufal in GW15, keeping 2 FTs for 16 when I'll make my decision on what to do and where to go. Hopefully we'll get confirmation of the BUR - MUN game in 18 or the City game. The former is much more likely than the latter. But imagine if City get that double in 19. BHA AVL while still got everything to play for...

i'd been planning to take this approach regardless. feels like rolling a FT fort he next couple of weeks puts you in a good position.

currently thinking free hit gw18 and BB gw19, using FTs and maybe a hit or 2 to preserve second WC.

I have 8 players as it is for GW18, and not sure how high scoring it will be.
May well just go FH in 19, and save the BB for later in season.

Best strategy will depend on your team is currently set up and if you have your first wildcard still.

For instance, as things stands I only have 4 players available for GW18, one of which is KDB who shall be making way for Salah next week, so feel I have no option but to play FH

BB in 19 is super strong though I feel.

Like even if your team isn't full of DGW guys, a bench boost of say: Martinez, Son, KdB, Dallas is going to be better than almost anything you could muster up later in the season.

Sorry Camzy, I don't think many managers will have the budget to have a strong bench like the one you're suggesting. What would be the actual 11?

              I can get this:

              Martinez McCarthy
              Zouma James Dallas Coufal Balbuena
              Salah KdB Fernandes Son Raphinha
              Bamford Adams Giroud/Antonio

It will likely be something like this.

            Totally agree.

Leeds and West Ham fixtures are a gift. I'm planning on upgrading my current bench of Button (4.0), Mitchell (4.0), Kilman (4.1), Jota (6.8) to something like Meslier (4.6), Dallas (4.6), Cresswell (5.2), Klich/Lookman (5.5).

That'll get 8 extra games out of the chip.

Yeah I'm still on that train. But I want to design my BB19 squad to be sustainable without having to use 2nd WC. Because that 2nd WC is gonna be important.

Likely the plan will be to ride out my team until GW29 where I'll dead-end my team for the blank then WC in GW30 and ride through the rest of the season.

Not too great: will have Lewis, Davis and Mitchell on bench that GW. Lewis and Davis will both play but Lewis has Arsenal and Davis has Everton. Do not expect more than 4 points there.

Salah is the best bet I think. United cannot keep a clean sheet; he plays them and Burnley; plays both at home and has the maximum time to rest and recover among all big hitters between those two games.

Yes. It's most people's route I think because if you have Salah, Fernandes, Bamford, Chelsea defense, the core of a strong DGW 19 is there already. I have it tipped a little more because I have 2 Chelsea defense and Dallas as well, but your team seems like it will work fine for that plan too.

Bruno is the first you trade out of him KDB and Kane
I wouldn't touch the last two names personally.

I can't get rid of Bruno because I need him for DGW19. His fixtures are also still good and he might even have a game in 18 as well if the Burnley match is rescheduled for then.

I'm inclined to agree, and reluctantly is definitely the way to describe it. Cheers

Want to ditch KDB for Bruno. But a little bit uncomfortable & worried KDB will punish me..

      Why would you do this?
      I'd rather KDB over Bruno.

Pretty difficult for me to chose captaincy this week. Don't like Salah away to an improved Palace with fans back, Bruno's returns haven't been particularly great with Pogba in the side this season, KDB's teammates are nowhere near his level. Leaning towards the latter, Southampton have been exposed vs better teams this season, Bruno's haul GW10 is what immediately comes to mind. Can see an end to end game with goals on both sides

I have Bruno, Kevin, Son, Salah and Grealish to pick from and finding it tough. Leaning towards Son at the moment with Grealish VC for some reason. Just feel those two are due a big haul but to be honest I think they could all do well this gw so might be one of those where they all cancel each other out anyway.

It is an easy point to make having conceded large against Spurs, Chelsea, Villa & United.
However, as a Southampton fan, I can say that we are trying to be more defensively resolute. I think we have learnt some key lessons, look at the Arsenal game.

Arsenal are terrible mate. If they're conceding large against those teams, IMO that just makes it more likely they do similar vs City - despite City's decline.

I'm not referencing them being a top side like the others.
I'm referencing the manner of how we decided to control the game, it was a slightly different way of playing that we did in those other games.

What to do with these this week? Thinking roll the transfer, what do you reckon?

    Mendy
    Chilwell, Targett, Lamptey
    KDB, Salah, Bruno, Grealish
    DCL, Bamford, Wilson

    Bench: Forster, Cresswell, Vestergaard, Riederwald

What is the best forward sub 6.8 for the xmas run? (I have bamford already)

-Wilson: good next fixture but tough afterwards. Erratic form. On pens

-Haller: form and good fixtures + DGW19. Rotation risk when antonio returns. No pens.

-Adams: best form but very tough fixtures. No pens.

-Watkins: on pens if alghazi benches. Good 2 fixtures and tough afterwards. Erratic form.

-Did i miss an obvious candidate?

Giroud is an option but i think it is a transfer waiting to happen with massive rotation risk over xmas

I would keep Wilson and wait for Antonio to play 2 x 90 mins and if he looks good bring him in......

Watkins form is not erratic - its quite consistent (2, 0, 2, 1)

    What to do with this?

    Martinez (Forster)
    Lamptey Justin Zouma (KWP Mitchell)
    Salah KdB Bruno Son Grealish
    Watkins DCL (Brewster)

    0,1m in bank and 2FT.

    A. Justin to CTaylor (to free up funds to upgrade Mitchell or do Watkins to Bamford later)
    B. Lamptey to Lewis (to free up funds to upgrade Mitchell or do Watkins to Bamford later)
    C. Burn transfer
    D. Something else.

    Thanks!

Best 4.7 defender to bring in? Have lamptey, kwp, balbuena. Planning to FH19, have plenty of weeks to get a defender for 18

Why everyone prefer BB than TC than DGW GW19...?

4 extra players playing twice in the biggest DGW of the season with excellent fixtures vs a TC chip that can be saved for a smaller DGW. TC is fairly overrated anyways, though Salah TC saved my season last year.

Totally depends on your team. I have 7 DGWers, 4 SGWers who are not leaving my team and 3 on bench who are worth just 1 or 2 points each. I am hitting TC.
