How I plan to make the most of Blank Gameweek 18 and Double Gameweek 19 in FPL

FPL Family’s Sam gives us some initial thoughts on which chips she’ll be using and transfers she’ll be making ahead of the upcoming Blank and Double Gameweeks.

When the Blank and Double Gameweek announcements come, I always like to leave it a few days to let the ground settle before I make a decision on my strategy.

Those first few days after the announcement are awash with contrasting views on how the Gameweeks should be played and there is a lot of discussion about how a certain strategy is the right way to manage these weeks.

The reality is that there is no universal right way. Some FPL managers will find themselves with teams of almost 11 players for the Blank Gameweek, whereas others will maybe only have three or four players. Some of us will have our Free Hit chips intact, while others won’t.

I always find that, after a couple of days, I am able to restrict the noise around the Gameweeks and focus on my individual team. This means that I am in a better position to plan for these Gameweeks and of course the free transfers that lead up to that point in the season.

Double and Blank Gameweeks can often be maximised with a long-term plan in mind, in order to avoid the use of hits and, in some cases, the need to use precious chips.

Black Gameweek 18

Maximising the potential of blank Gameweek 18 and double Gameweek 19

For me, the FPL chips are there to be used aggressively.

If used in a Double Gameweek, the most a Free Hit can do is give you 11 players who play twice. Whilst on paper this seems great, the reality is that other chips have more explosive potential.

Using a Bench Boost can give you up to 15 Double Gameweek players, for example, while the Triple Captain chip will supply you with 11 assets and additional captain returns.

This is why I believe that the Free Hit should always be used in a Blank Gameweek to maximise its return potential.

There is a decent chance that Gameweek 18 will be our biggest Blank Gameweek of the season and so using the Free Hit chip makes sense here.

Firstly, it allows you to use free transfers to target Double Gameweek 19 (more on that later). Secondly, it allows you to have a full squad of the best players available for that week only.

Kane and Son deliver again as Spurs prepare for appealing fixture swing

This Blank Gameweek sees the likes of Spurs, Man City and Everton play, meaning that it is easy to choose a team of players that could easily return good FPL points that week. Son Heung-min (£9.7m) and Harry Kane (£11.0m) are currently second and third in the FPL points table this season, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), Jack Grealish (£7.8m), Callum Wilson (£6.6m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.5m) all feature in the top ten and have unaffected fixtures in Blank Gameweek 18.

My team currently contains six players who will play in the Blank Gameweek:

  • Harry Kane
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin
  • Son Heung-min
  • Tariq Lamptey
  • Ruben Dias
  • Yves Bissouma

For the first couple of days after the announcement, I did consider using my transfers to build for a Gameweek 18 team. However, doing this would mean using my Free Hit in Gameweek 19, which I feel limits my potential for points returns. But more importantly, building a team for Gameweek 18 with my free transfers would mean losing players such as Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) and Salah – which I definitely do not want to do.

Ahead of Gameweek 14, I removed a player who does play in Gameweek 18, Ollie Watkins (£6.1m), in favour of a player who doubles in Gameweek 19, Patrick Bamford (£6.4m).

There are of course risks to doing this, especially if the offloaded players return in the weeks ahead of the Double and Blank Gameweeks.

However, the players that I am bringing in for Gameweek 19 are also players that I would prefer to hold long term, and thus that opens the possibility of holding onto the second Wildcard until the next wave of rearrangements – including a potentially significant Double Gameweek 26.

I’m currently aiming for a Free Hit side that looks like this:

Whilst of course this may change with injuries, player form and price changes, I feel that this gives good potential for returns during Blank Gameweek 18. I would play a 3-4-3 formation as follows:

  • Jordan Pickford
  • Gary Cahill
  • Ruben Dias
  • Jamal Lewis
  • Jack Grealish
  • Son Heung-Min
  • Kevin De Bruyne (c)
  • Raheem Sterling
  • Harry Kane (vc)
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin
  • Callum Wilson

Double Gameweek 19

Here is the opportunity that we as FPL managers love the most – the potential to have the majority of our team play twice and further increase returns with the Bench Boost or Triple Captain chip.

Up until late afternoon on Monday, this looked set to be the biggest Double Gameweek of the season. However, the announcement of the moving of the League Cup final from Gameweek 26 to 33 could have ramifications for FPL managers.

As we start to learn more about that Gameweek, my view on whether to use my Bench Boost or Triple Captain may change. But at this point, having as many players as possible playing feels like the way to go – and thus I’m planning to play my Bench Boost in Gameweek 19.

Unlike many other FPL managers, I will not be fielding 15 Double Gameweek players. As is always the case, there are ‘single’ Gameweek players who could return big and punish those who transferred them out.

Spurs play only once but their opponents are lowly Sheffield United, so Son and Kane could easily rack up tidy hauls. The same is also true of the Manchester City boys, who only play Crystal Palace in that Gameweek.

As it stands, I currently own eight Double Gameweek players and have four free transfers left before I play my Free Hit in Gameweek 18. By using those four transfers carefully, I can ensure that I have 12 Double Gameweek players as well as three further single Gameweek players – who will likely include Son and Kane – to enable me to make the best use of the Bench Boost chip.

My FPL squad is presently as follows:

With this as a base point, I plan to do the following to ensure premium coverage of the Double Gameweek:

  • Gameweek 15 – Tariq Lamptey to Stuart Dallas
  • Gameweek 16 – Ruben Dias to Reece James – if fit – or Vladimir Coufal
  • Gameweek 17 – Fraser Forster to Sam Johnstone and Yves Bissouma to a £5.1m-ish midfielder, such as Matt Philips, Ademola Lookman or, if Arsenal have improved, Bukayo Saka.

In doing this, I can have a team which still includes Kane, Son and Calvert-Lewin for their nice single Gameweek fixtures but allows me to bring in Double Gameweek players who have nice fixtures and who I am happy to hold longer-term.

Can Robertson sustain value advantage over Alexander-Arnold after 10-point haul?

The only issue with this strategy is a lack of a Liverpool defender, who I would really like to own.

But, as with the premium attackers this season, it isn’t possible to have all of them and thus I might have to go without Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) or Andy Robertson (£7.3m) for the Double Gameweek. It is possible to budget for Joel Matip (£5.4m) to at least cover for the Liverpool clean sheet potential, however.

Over the next few weeks, as we understand more of the ramifications of Gameweek 26, my thinking may shift away from the Bench Boost and towards the Triple Captain. If this happens, then I can tweak some of my transfers as I won’t, for example, need a playing second goalkeeper.

It will also mean that I won’t need to remove some of the players who have nice fixtures between now and Gameweeks 18 and 19 and could mean that I can budget for that premium Liverpool defender given the lack of need to upgrade others elsewhere.

The Complete Guide to Scout’s tips and advice for FPL Gameweek 14 1

If the Triple Captain becomes my chip of favour then I will put it on someone trustworthy and in form. Liverpool’s games against Manchester United and Burnley look good for handing the armband to Salah and thus he’d probably just get the nod over Fernandes, who has Liverpool and Fulham.

Concluding Thoughts

Planning for the Double and Blank Gameweeks in advance is key. I’ll be carefully watching the markets with regard to the players that I am targeting for Gameweek 19 so as not to be priced out of owning them.

For me, using the chips to aggressively return as many points as possible, rather than to cover up areas of concern, is important – maximise singles with the Free Hit and maximise doubles with the Bench Boost and Triple Captain.

Most importantly though, focus on your own team. It’s so easy to listen to what others are doing because it’s right for their squad and because of the chips they have available. Play the game for your team and to give you the best start over the course of these extraordinary Gameweeks.

Fairly sure I'll be dropping Spurs assets on FH, have a very nice draft planned with 11 DGWers, but it depends on how they look over the next four.

This reminds me of how Spurs played vs Everton, making me dump them vs S'oton

There's already a clear indicator of how that match will go: Spurs sit back, Sheffield attacks with overlapping wing backs, Spurs exploit the spaces they leave behind. Two stubborn managers who have strict scripts dating back 5+ years, regardless of form. Even if Spurs blank against Villa (which wouldn't surprise me, because the game doesn't suit Mou's style), I'm still keeping Son on FH19

But it could just be me seeing this, and that's fine

I also have issues finding any DGW player who has a considerably high chance of outscoring Son based on the two fixtures they have, especially due to how that price point fits into my XI. Rashford is the closest, but he's frustratingly unreliable

    Ah Mitchell my boy, £3.9m.

At start of season he had 783,000 owners and was £4.0m, peaking at 1.7m owners at £4.2m. He has lost just 400k owners (now owned by 1.3m) and has dropped to £3.9m.

Meanwhile Castagne was 1.5m owned when £5.8m and has lost 1.1m owners (now 389k) but has only had one price drop to £5.7m.

One day I look forward to understanding how all this works 🙂

It's propably already been asked, but what to do about Mahrez?

Given he played the full 90 last night, do we expect to see him starting against Newcastle?

Or should I just hope and pray for a return from him, even if it's from the bench?

I think I said this after his hat trick: If you aren't the type to keep Mahrez from GWs 4 to 9, don't buy him after a haul

He's either long-term set-and-forget or completely avoid. Every time you want to sell him, there's the looming chance of a haul

If you do decide to sell him, don't think of his next match. Just do it and be done with him for good

We're in a ranking/standings game. I think the only approach we should have when it comes to BGW/DGW BB/FH debate is edge against the other players. Talking about edge, this is directly related to ceilings.

Is a FH18 likely to create a bigger point gap with the other players who don't FH than a FH19 against players who BB19.

I have the feeling a great FH with a very strong 11 in 19 can outscore big time a bench boost of cheapies but a margin of +- 40 points which could possibly happen in 18 but this would rely A LOT on city spanking brighton as the edge of free hitters in FH18 will mainly come from City players against non free hitters who don't have city players.

That's putting a lot of If in the very If"fy" team City is

A good way to analyse it and something I'll def look at.
A double GW BB should bring in something like 24 points (3 PPG for 4 players playing twice).
A TC in a double would likely be a bit less (my captains tend to average between 8 - 9 PPG).

On the FH it'll obviously depend on how many players are going to play vs not using it.
A captain tends to be about a third of a team score, with the VC bring that up to about 50%. So the remaining 9 players average around 3 - 4 PPGs.

Will be the basis of my maths to work it out!

That's even before we consider the other big DGW: GW26

I think BB19/26 + FH26/19 + minor DGW TC (Bruno, KDB/Aguero, Grealish) has ever chance to outscore FH18 + BB19 + TC26 with no chip for the minor DGWs

I would rather plan for what i know is coming rather than what might be. With only 5 players in 18 and already 9 dgwers + 2 city its most logical for me to FH 18/BB19

You need to do what is right for your own team, not everyone elses.

Yeah. That's what works for your team, and I don't think anybody would disagree with that

Most of the arguments on here are around the template and those who are currently in a position to go with either strategy so they're seeking the better one. It becomes clearer when you focus on your own team

Good points. It seems like loading players for BGW18 and FH in 19 is out of fashion. Mainly due to the good fixture run afterwards for those with doubles. Even though GW18 doesn't scream points, FH there just means creating a gap - like you say - between yourself and those who can only field six or so. Especially since some of those six will be city and might face rotation.

It'll be FH 18 for me, possible TC 19. I used BB already and it got me 18pts.

I think at the moment it's very hard to pan what to do, can only plan options you might want to pursue.
Everton v Man U tonight will impact what games might be rescheduled into GW17, 18 and 19. If Man Utd and Burnley play twice in GW17 and GW19 then clearly stacking up with them is a strong tactic. It could also move into GW18 and so would be 12 teams to chose from so FH would be less tempting.
Villa vs Newcastle or Man City vs Villa could also move into GW19 which would make more doubles!

So many unknowns at the moment, and that's before COVID might throw something into the mix too!
I'll be undecided, but with options until the GW16 deadline!!!

On number of transfers though - if you have 2FT now, does that not mean you can make 5 transfers before FH18 and BB19?

    i.e. now
    14.5 x2
    15.5
    16.5
    17.5
    Then FH
    18.5 BB

I think Sam is 100% right on her strategy for the doubles. Logistically, the more I analyze, the more it makes sense to shoot for a FH in 18 and a BB in 19.

The fact that the blank GW and the DGW are back to back is what makes using both chips extra powerful, because they directly affect each other. You don't have time to build a good GW18 squad and then reverse it to prepare for DGW19. Whereas later in the season, you have time between say GW26 DGW and blank GW29 to start moving players around.

I'm gonna use pure logistics here to make my point. Let's just consider raw fixtures.

The most common counter strategy that I've read is to field a passable squad in 18 and then TC in 19 to save both of the other chips.

Let's say you want to navigate without using FH or BB. You aim to get 8 players out for GW18 leaving 5 DGW19 players on the bench + 2 fodder. So for DGW19, you'd be going in with 5 DGW players. Let's say you plan optimally and keep 2 FTs in 18, you'd then be left with 7 DGW players for GW19 and then because you haven't prepared a strong BB because of your GW18 players, you'd TC instead.

Let's count raw fixtures you'd get from this strat. You get 8 fixtures in GW18 and then you'd get 7 DGW fixtures in 19 + a TC which means in total, over the two weeks, you'd be getting 8 + 18 + 1 TC = 27 total fixtures.

If you FH 19 instead of play TC, you'd get 22 fixtures + 8 from GW18 = 30 total fixtures.

Now compare that with the FH18 and BB19 strat.

FH in 18 gets you 11 players. Let's be conservative and say you get 12 DGW players instead of the full 15 BB complement (which is very possible if you have your first WC in hand play it in 16 and are very aggressive). The total fixtures you'd earn from your chips is 11 from 18 + 12 DGWs = 11 + 27 (12 DGWs + 3 for BB) = 38 fixtures.

Using FH and then BB nets you 11 more fixtures than just using the TC chip in 19. It nets you 8 more fixtures if you decide to FH in 19 instead.

I'm almost certain because of the short turnaround in games, that this will be the largest difference you can make this season.

In future weeks, you'll have time between the blanks and doubles to make transfers and jump from blanks to doubles or vice versa. The fact that they're back to back is what makes wielding double chips here extra effective and especially in doing using it with the strategy of FH 18 and BB19 is what will yield the greatest return.

Exactly. Thankfully for those of us in similar positions we have DGW26 in which we can BB in, after using WC in GW25. It's also useful to have a few viable SGW players with an eye towards BGW29.

I think your analysis is biased by the fact you refer to "players"
You have to take into consideration that the "players" you have in a BBGW19 team includes a big bunch of cheapies/enablers with lower ceilieng whereas you can possibly go full mid)prices/premium on a FH19 with much high ceiling.
I mean, you clearly have ton consider a Bench boosted Taylor can bring you 6 points in DGW19 and a Free Hitted Rashford 25 points in DGW19

The point is that a Free Hit lets you get premiums you wouldn't want long term, over cheap players who'll be on your bench long term and/or necessitate two chips (FH18 with or without WC after)

So it does feel like a trap, especially with the fixtures for those cheap guys in GWs 17 and 20+

Even with my sky-high team value (105.5), I can't create a BB19 team that beats my FH19 team for potential and also sets me up nicely for future GWs. That's the problem

            • 9 Years

I have exactly the same analyzis. I would add that there's another good advantage in Free Hitting in 19 is that you can go differential. You can wait for the last press conference and it enables you to go maverick on certain high ceiling maverick/differential spots like Werner / Rashford / aguero? whereas bench booster already have to decide who to bring in now. And clearly you don't bring werner in now.. But Werner could explode by GW19 imo

I disagree. I think I can beat a FH team with my BB one in GW19.

It's not like I'm loading up with triple Burnley or Fulham to get the numbers. I'm investing in Leeds, West Ham fillers who have great DGW fixtures.

I honestly think that a BB team of:

            Martinez Johnstone
            Zouma James Coufal Balbuena Dallas
            Salah Fernandes Son Bowen Grealish
            Vardy Bamford Adams

Can beat any FH team. Like who am I even really missing from this? Robertson I guess?

I sure think you can indeed on GW19.
However in your analyzis you have also to take into consideration what I call the inertia related to these players from now until GW19 and then until your second WC. They could outscore the other on 19 indeed but will they on the 16-24 run? not sure

I didn't say it was perfect.

This is true what you're saying. However, I still think raw quantity will win out in this case. 11 more fixtures is a huge amount.

Also, you're also assuming that your blank GW18 players are optimal. They almost certainly are not. We're talking Lampteys, Bissoumas and even the likes of Martinez vs TOT aren't exactly great... The FH in 18 will give you more optimal players and more of them.

C Salah this week, does my bench look correct?
Last chance for Watkins or play Defender?

    Martinez
    Zouma, Robbo, Stones
    Bruno, Son, Grealish, Salah
    Kane, Bamford, Watkins

    Forster, Coufal, Dallas, Soucek

    .5

Do people generally put up a decent bench for free hit teams? Perhaps a starting defender and two 4.0/3.9 fodder seem cost-efficient on bench IMO

1 defender sub on a free hit team imo

Probably just one starting bench player in case of catastrophe but if I need the funds I don't mind going with zero.

Held Robbo since the start of the season and finally sold ahead of the Spurs game. Well and truly punished (especially as was to free up funds for Kane (c) last week...)

Plan is to go Chilwell and KDB to Son and Pool defender after the Boxing Day fixtures, but which Pool defender is the current #1?

How many players do you currently have for GW18 and GW19?

Should this be the primary driver of strategy choice or should we all be aiming for an optimal chip strategy (I have 6/9 and think I will FH then TC)

currently have 10 for 18, only 4 playing dgw'rs, so i'm going to trim my 10 for the blank down to 8 (2 Brighton against city can go) also have Lewis if he's dropped the he can go too leaving me with 7 for the blank and 8 dgw'rs

If you have no 1st wc I think your team dictates the strat. I have 9dgw players so am moving in the fh18 bb19 direction

Let's say I've bought a player, say Salah, at 12.1 and his current selling price for me is 12.3 while actual price is 12.5. If I activate FH, sell him and then decide I want him back, will I be able to bring him back for 12.5 or 12.3?

Is this a good plan for this week:

Chilwell >> Coufal (or Taylor) to use an FT with GW19 in mind... then with 2FT next week Grealish DCL >> Fernandes Wood (or Adams)

    Y or N

    Thanks
