Barnes matches Vardy’s output over last four ahead of Double Gameweek

Crystal Palace 1-1 Leicester

  • Goals: Wilfried Zaha (£7.5m) | Harvey Barnes (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Andros Townsend (£5.7m) | Jonny Evans (£5.5m)
  • Penalty misses: Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.6m)
  • Penalty saves: Vicente Guaita (£4.9m)
  • Bonus points: Evans x3, Guaita 2, H Barnes x1

BARNES DOOR

Harvey Barnes (£6.7m) is making a strong case for winter investment as he added his fifth Premier League goal of the season against Crystal Palace.

It was the midfielder’s second in as many outings, made all the more impressive by the gap between his two most recent outings.

Despite Leicester facing matches on Saturday and Monday, Barnes played 90 minutes on each occasion, suggesting he is more nailed-on to start and, therefore, more viable as a Fantasy asset, than many of us had previously thought.

Brendan Rodgers praised his powers of recovery in the aftermath of the Foxes’ 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park, as well as his performance – helpful information for anyone considering a swoop for Barnes.

“I thought he was outstanding, to play a second 90 minutes having done so well against Man United, to play with that level of fitness. His movement was very helpful, getting us the penalty as well. All around he was a good threat.” – Brendan Rodgers

As mentioned by Rodgers, Barnes’ running would have ensured two attacking returns for Gameweek 16 had Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.6m) not missed the first-half penalty he won.

“I just said at half-time, it’s one you’ve got to let go. Kel’s practised five penalties this week in training and they were great. He was confident going in to take it and that’s all I can ask.” – Brendan Rodgers

……….. IT’S JAMIE VARDY

Even without adding that assist to his Gameweek 16 score, Barnes has still matched Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) as a Fantasy asset over the last four matches.

Bringing in eight points at Selhurst Park, one through bonus, the winger has racked up 20 during that time, an average of five per game.

The fact that Vardy suffered an inevitable benching on Monday means he also has 20 points over that period and an average of five per game – despite a £3.4m gap between him and Barnes’ price.

Leicester are certainly on the Fantasy radar right now with a Gameweek 17 trip to Newcastle in mind as well as Double Gameweek 19 meetings with Southampton (home) and Chelsea (home).

Considering that Vardy has suffered a dip from the form shown earlier in the campaign, and typically performs better away from home, Barnes could well be used as a cheaper alternative route into their attack based on recent performances.

The fact that he has started each of the last four, lasting 90 minutes in three of them, might count against him in the short-term, although Leicester do have a six-day gap between Gameweek 16 and 17 fixtures.

GOOD WIL HUNTING

It feels like some time since Wilfried Zaha (£7.5m) has delivered for his 19.4% ownership but there are plenty of encouraging signs moving forward.

His contribution to Crystal Palace’s campaign was, of course, limited by his self-isolation period for Gameweeks 9 and 10 – perhaps why he has been off the radar to some extent recently.

However, Zaha’s Gameweek 16 opener ensured he has now scored or assisted in all but one home start against sides outside the Premier League’s current top two.

With that in mind, the winger is worth considering between now and Gameweek 21, when Palace face three home matches from a possible five.

Even better, those home meetings are with Sheffield United, West Ham and Wolves – exactly the sort of opponent Zaha has enjoyed posting attacking returns against this season.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Mitchell, Kouyaté, Tomkins, Clyne; Schlupp (Ayew 84′), Riedewald (McArthur 74′), Milivojević, A Townsend; Zaha, Benteke.

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; L Thomas, Evans, Amartey, Justin; N Mendy, Choudhury (Tielemans 57′); H Barnes, Praet (Vardy 66′), Pérez; Iheanacho (Gray 72′).

I’ve read the rules and I can’t find out if I can use a transfer to change my permanent squad in the same week that I use FH. Anyone know?

You cannot. If you use a FT then play your FH, the FT will count as part of your FH.

Your team will revert to the team prior to your FT

Your FH is for every transfer in that game week.

      GW2 FH
GW3 you get your GW1 team as it was.

Which one do you reckon will be the most viewed?
      BRI - ARS (Arteta comeback?)
BUR - SHU (no way! 0-0)
SOU - WHU (could be good?)
WBA - LEE (bus vs. all out attack)

like anything gas-like the concentration is going to relate to distance from point source. The drop off will be huge in all but the most stagnant conditions. Which makes teams allowing their players to continue to rub reach other up and basically snog reach other after goals unnecessary, stupid and irresponsible

I thought it was established that City stayed in a London hotel before their last game, a hotel that reported positive cases soon after they checked out. Stick with known causes before launching into conspiracies and wild theories.

Not that - I was referring to catching it on the pitch or touching the ball. It's entirely feasible they were in the hotel with a guest or staff who was symptomatic but tested after contact with the squad.

Surprised to see Salah so ahead in the Top10K captain rank, and even Son and Kane beating Bruno.

For me Bruno was always cleatly the best pick: best player, playing home and having 78h rest comparing to Wolves' 46h. I honestly didn't consider anyone else.

But now the choice looks a lot more maverick than I thought (as I thought it was the template...). And getting nervous 🙂

      We'll see, good luck everyone!

Ronaldinho was interesting in CM01/02: he got flair 20 I think, but wasnt otherwise that great yet. And his FRL (Forward, right/left) just couldnt fit to my tactics... A must buy anyways for any save 🙂

I think that's the best argument to be fair.

Really hated the times this season when there was even a slight change capping Bruno, but decided for other... watching the game isn't as fun then.

And of course highlight of the season was capping Bruno away to Everton for that 17p haul. Quite few others did, but I had a feeling Everton wasn't going for CS and knew I was going to watch it live.

can anyone shed any light on Ben Johnson? Likely to play more?
Secondly with matip injured, is Rhys Williams a good cheap way into L'pool with the double game week approaching?

I think Ben Johnson is going to get a shout in after scoring. I feel Moyes is now back to his preferred 3-4-2-1 (or whatever, with wingbacks I mean). He switched away only because Masuaku injury I think, but now I'm sure he will trust Ben. Of course not 100% but this is my view.

I wouldn't go for Rhys. I think Nathaniel Phillips will get a change too, and by DGW19 there'll likely be someone new already.

I chose Salah because I think Newcastle looks poor at defending.
Even in a 5-4-1 where the 4 midfielders has a defensive mindset they still concede a lot of big chances.
Cancelo could have had 5 assist. Guess Robbo and TAA will be just as dangerous to Newcastle, and Salah, Mane and/or Firmino will bag those.

Rash is interesting differential, good luck with that! He has been so wasteful but megahaul must be coming. 3-0 up and Bruno would definitely give Rash a penalty to him if there is a change for hattrick!

I own Salah, Bruno & Son (sold KDB this week) but captained Kane. I would have captained Salah next.

I thought Wolves has looked quite good recently, better than Fulham & Newcastle, and is the hardest fixture of the three captain choices.

If the Spurs duo haul and you don't own both or captain one of them, then it is a red arrow for many.

A Bruno haul at 92% EO (at my rank) will not hurt me, a Salah haul at 130% EO will, and double haul from Son 95% 'and' Kane 70% will be terminal for many 😉

        1. FPLGOOD
          • 4 Years

          Those are good arguments!

I personally still give some value to home matches, though that reasoningn is running thin 🙂 Also I have seen very little discussion on the Manu advantage of the scheduling for Wolves game (78vs46 hours). But we'll see if that counts for anything.

I also try to avoid thinking what could hurt me. Actually if I count two players both to score "around 9 points" example, then I would go for the less owned to gain ground. But apart from this its just straightforward "who is going to score more" (with a slight bias for manu and especially Bruno of course 🙂 ). But of course now I'm a bit nervous, haha!

For me Son is VC, just remembered.

          Good luck!

If both Salah & Bruno score 9 points (all else being equal) and you captained Bruno your rank will fall, if you captained Salah your rank will rise.

The gamble of course is to pick the player that scores the most points, but if that fails then I like to manage the downside as well.

That said I have captained Bruno, Son & Salah in the last 3 game weeks for their 2 pointers

GL because a Bruno haul is good for both of us 🙂

              • 4 Years

Yeah, I get your point 🙂

How I tend to play though is that in this scenario if Bruno scores 15 and Salah 2 and I captained Bruno, then my rise would be much greater than if Salah scores 15, Bruno 2 and I captained Salah.

I guess it's just how aggressive you play. Most important thing is always to pick the one you think is going to score most (obviously) - no matter if he's capped by 7million players.

              Yep, Good luck!

The Goal article is written by their Man. United correspondent and the headline is clickbait for United fans. The article itself is full of caveats and exceptions. All it really says is that Bruno has made a big difference to United, which is hardly a revelation.

But you clicked on it and now so did I, so I guess it achieved the objective. 😉

Doesn't make your words any the less a bunch of BS though. 😀

Martial is a high risk - and quite the opposite in terms of watching comparing to Bruno, btw 😀 Martial is sooooo frustrating 🙂 I infact had Cavani for short time, but then he got injured... now i dont feel like trusting him again. And other Manu dont feel good value in terms of starts and returns. Lindelöf was in consideration before injury but just because he is cheap!

          Free Hit FAQ

          Q: If I have 2 FTs in GW17, FH in 18, do I get 2 FTs in 19?
A: No. After FH, you are back to 1 FT.

Q: Can I make a transfer(s) in GW18, then FH. Will that transfer before the FH be effective for GW19?
A: No. Assuming FH18, FH freezes your GW17 team until GW19, and you're back with 1 FT in 19.

Q: What happens with price changes during the FH?
A: Your team from before the FH accumulates any price rises or falls. You will get your entire team from GW17 back including any money ITB. Any price changes that occur to your squad during your FH do not carry over.

Can we just pin this and be done with all the same questions?

True, but then people can just link to this post (or an article preferably) instead of typing out full answers every time.

TBF the FAQ on the FPL site is a bit crap. The first two questions are unanswered at least.

Ben Crellin playing a blinder with trying to make sense of the chaos:

@BenCrellin:If you're thinking about making early transfers in GW17, here are some of the things that could possibly be announced this week:

CHE vs MCI becoming a GW17 Blank

BUR vs MUN moving to DGW17

BUR vs MUN moving to GW18 (neither team would Blank)

EVE vs MCI moving to DGW19

Pretty obvious that anyone making an early transfer this week needs their head examining, and pretty worrying it needs someone on Twitter to tell them.

Burnley/Utd one is very strange as they have had literally all season to arrange it.

Might just go with Fernandes (C) next GW.

Any of that could change things massive. Use your transfer wise this GW.
1.If you kept KDB, have Son/Kane and Bruno you can probably save FH chip if ManU play BGW18.
            2. Keeping City (and bench in case blank GW17) also handy if they get DGW19.

Those who kept KDB still can be the real winners here.

If that happens there’ll be more fundamental problems for FPL mgrs to deal with than blank & doubles...

City would have another 4 postponed fixtures to add to the 2 already backlogged (FA Cup 3rd round, League cup Semi + 4 PL games)

Season viability might starts to get questioned in those cases
