Raphinha brings in double digit haul as Bamford blanks again

NEWCASTLE 1-2 LEEDS

  • Goals: Miguel Almiron (£5.6m) | Raphinha (£5.4m), Jack Harrison (£5.4m)
  • Assists: Callum Wilson (£6.6m) | Rodrigo Moreno (£5.7m), Raphinha
  • Bonus Points: Raphinha x3, Almiron x2, Harrison x1

A star turn by Raphinha (£5.4m) earned Leeds a first win since Gameweek 16 as Patrick Bamford (£6.7m) blanked and was subbed off after 59 minutes for an inglorious one-pointer.

In Fantasy terms, it was all about how the 50.1% owned Bamford would get on against a defence with just the one clean sheet since Gameweek 10, with a decent level of interest in Stuart Dallas (£4.8m and 14.1%) and Callum Wilson (£6.6m and 18.8%) to add some spice.

Rapha the Gaffa

There was no suggestion that Bamford was taken off with an injury issue.

In the end, he simply had a poor match and was easily upstaged by midfielder Raphinha, who scored his second goal in four Gameweeks to make it five attacking contributions from his last six starts.

And he wasn’t finished there either, setting up Jack Harrison’s (£5.4m) winner just four minutes after Newcastle had levelled through Miguel Almiron (£5.6m).

Leeds’ schedule doesn’t exactly scream investment. Once a weekend trip to Leicester is out of the way, they’ll host Everton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa and travel to Arsenal, Wolves and West Ham.

What it doesn’t do is scream sales either, although Bamford is surely on borrowed time for many as he’s scored just once since Gameweek 13.

But if any Leeds player is going to break into a few FPL squads, it could be Raphinha, who now has three goals and as many assists from a season in which he only started his first match in Gameweek 10.

MIDDLE MEN

Harrison remains the side’s highest point-scoring midfielder In FPL, with 76, and he made it two goals in four matches with the winner at St James’ Park.

More interest surrounded Dallas, however, as the defender was again handed a place in midfield by coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Dallas, with three goals and two assists, remains the team’s most potent defender, but his attacking threat is not necessarily enhanced by a place in midfield.

And while his points from six clean sheets are always welcome, only two teams have conceded more goals than the 35 let in by Leeds.

Dallas appeared to be limping at times in the second half, not that Bielsa seemed concerned post-match.

“I couldn’t tell you how he is at the moment because I haven’t been informed of anything just yet.”

Marcelo Bielsa

The coach was more worried about centre-half Diego Llorente (£4.4m), who lasted just nine minutes of his first league start for the club before succumbing to a hamstring problem.

“He has a similar problem to the one as before. It’s a problem for him, us, all of us. In this moment, Diego’s state of mind worries me because of the succession of injures.”

Marcelo Bielsa

BRUCEY NO BONUS

Bielsa’s Newcastle counterpart, Steve Bruce, rolled the dice after the break, bringing on Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.1m) and unshackling a side that had been set up to negate Leeds’ attacking threat rather than exploit the visitors’ defensive weaknesses.

It worked, in terms of stats if not the result, as Bruce acknowledged.

“We had 20-odd shots, we hit the bar and we were unfortunate we didn’t score more. That’s the best we’ve played in weeks. It was good to see the forward players on the pitch to make that possible for us, what a difference if we keep Ryan Fraser right – and Miguel Almiron – then we know we are going to be that threat.”

Steve Bruce

It’s going to take more than words to convince Fantasy managers to go near Newcastle assets at present.

And the one Magpies player with significant FPL ownership – Wilson – has now blanked for six straight Gameweeks.

Newcastle (5-4-1): Darlow; Murphy (Saint-Maximin 64), Hayden, Schar, Lascelles, Lewis; Shelvey, Hendrick, Almiron, Fraser (Gayle77); Wilson.

Leeds (4-5-1) : Meslier; Allioski (Klich 56), Cooper, Llorente (Struijk 10), Ayling; Phillips, Dallas, Raphinha, Rodrigo, Harrison; Bamford (Roberts 60).

Sold Kdb for Sterling which worked out ok
Decided on wait n see approach for Gundogan which sucked

My main options are now to do Sterling+Bamford to Kane+Gund -4 (not concerned about the hit)
Or keep Sterling vs SHU and captain him and go Bamford to DCL
Then switch Sterling to Kane for gw22 (West Brom)

In other words, can DCL match Kane for the next couple and is waiting on Gundogan just plain old stubborn?

See how DCL does tonight, Could be a shrewd move.Would feel lot more confident with Kane and Gundo in my team though

I am in the exact same boat as yourself, but by doing Sterling to Gund I can afford Brewster to Kane. Or I keep Sterling then do Brewster to DCL.

I think the City game is once again the game with the potential for the most goals, and I would not feel good about captaining Gundogan in it.

Right now for that reason, I am planning on keeping Sterling and captaining him, then getting DCL in for the good next few and hopefully a double also!

Who is your alternate captain choice next week if not Sterling?
Don’t think Pep can afford to bench him but Gund even more assured to start

Of the current lot it is Sterling with I guess Salah as back up. If Kane comes in, it would be him - but I am not even sure he is a better captain option than Sterling?

Which transfer is looking best chaps? Presumably going for BB in DGW26.

    A) Douglas -> Justin
    B) Douglas -> Shaw
    C) Dias/Stones -> Cancelo
    D) Bamford -> Antonio
    E) Bamford -> DCL

    Martinez
    Dias, Stones, Mitchell
    Salah, Fernandes, Son, Gundogan, Soucek
    Kane, Bamford

    (Steer, Coufal, Brewster, Douglas*)

Penny for your thoughts gentlemen and women

    A) Brewster to Kane and play Bamford over Soucek
    B) Bamford to Kane and play Soucek
    C) Brewster and Bamford to Kane and DCL (-4) bench Soucek
    D) Brewster to Kane and Grealish to Son (-4) bench Soucek
    E) Bamford to Kane and Grealish to Son (-4) play Soucek

Main concerns are how DCL plays tonight, whether Spurs double up is worth losing Grealish, and whether you think benching Soucek is ever a good idea...

I think DCL is defo worth a punt regardless of tonight vs a decent Leicester defence.. He has Newcastle and Leeds up next..

Tricky. B looks the 'sensible' option. I like D/E as consider Son essential. DCL could be a great differential of course.

      So looks like agreement on
      >) Bamford out for Kane

and then have to deicde if i want to take a hit to shfit Brewster for DCL or Grealish for Son.

    Funny old game is FPL...

In GW19 I was keen on doing Bam > Antonio(-4) and asked on here and to a man everyone said no. I chickened out of it and then obviously lost out on loads of points.

So this week, I was keen on getting out Soucek for Rash (-4). Everybody said no, but I went with my gut and pulled the trigger. Lost out on a load of points (most likely).

Not sure what lesson is to be learnt here 🙂

It won't be a popular view on here, but Soucek benching/selling was a bad beat this week. His goal threat over the last few was dreadful, esp from set pieces which ended up being the Palace weakness he exploited for one of the goals.

It actually made sense to bench him, some ppl have decent team. It's just those who start Leeds defender over Soucek, they don't even deserve him.

Can't agree with this (I am biased!). Dallas (in my example) had far superior attacking stats to Soucek over the last 4, and Newcastle are dog. Ironically if it weren't for Bamford they would have kept a CS too

Take everything you hear on these pages with a pinch of salt. If you are doing your own research, trust your findings. I generally only come on here when I am looking for inspiration, and then I'll go and research whatever options people suggest, and make a decision after that.

And sometimes the right decision leads to less points - it's just something we have to accept with these types of games.

Thinking Vardy to Kane and Raph to Gundo for a hit personally.

Cancelo the new Lamptey was my personal fave.

Mount is quietly doing a Ramsey this season. The nature of doing a Ramsey means you never realise someone is doing a Ramsey.

There will never be another Michu.

Yesterday was a pretty polarising day but if you need cheering up just remember there are people who deliberately own and play Johnstone.

Why did Aubameyang miss the last couple of games? It sounds like something sad is happening familywise?

That's a shame. You don't often hear of players missing games for that.

With 4 games in 2 weeks times, which of the popular FPL assets do you see getting a rest?

I think Gundagon, Cancelo, Bruno, Antonio getting one.

Antonio yes. i foolishly sold him on that basis. i think Laporte will get some action - at Stones' expense. There'll be 59 min substitutions for the likes of Bruno, Rashford, Son, Kane and most of City.

I've got both and have Soucek third sub. Looks bad now but it's unfortunate, long term these things even out but I don't think people remember as clearly the times when a 50/50 call has gone in their favour, it's just human nature. I've got Grealish, Salah, Son, Bruno, Bamford, Antonio and Watkins as well as Soucek so one had to miss out. He'll probably outscore all of them but you wouldn't have predicted that before the games started.

Rough: As a result, put Soucek first on bench 🙁

Got a bit of dough (1.8m) and fancy a tweak. Switch to 3-5-2 with Bamford 1st sub and bring in Gundog for Romeu, or at long last get a City def in for Pieters?

    McCarthy
    Coufal Konsa KWP Aloiski Pieters
    Salah Bruno Sterling Soucek Romeu
    Kane Antonio Bamford

There are so many great cheap midfielders... Over the last couple of gameweeks Saka and Gundogan had much better stats than any other premium midfielder

plus Soucek. Pre-season we were all discussing which 4 PREMIUM midfielders to own!

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 7 Years

I know right. The problem is I don't have enough places in the midfield to have them all. And furthermore, I'm not sure if it isn't just temporary. There were times were cheap forwards were must haves with great stats and now they blank and blank (like Bamford and Wilson). After all, premium midfielders are more safe options I guess. It's sometimes hard to distinguish between someone having having a short term great form or having a breakthrough season eh...

What we have also seen are pens drying up...Salah/Bruno//Auba/KDB (when taking them) would have a reliable source of points.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 7 Years

Yup I agree. Especially for salah it is worrying. Without pens his stats are pretty average this season. On the other hand.. it's Salah. I can't be sure he won't suddenly go back to the form from previous seasons

I've learned to keep Salah, like Kun from the past. They have the ability to destroy you with explosions of form sometimes from nowhere.

Your second sentence is not a question, it is a statement. Do not use a question mark, this has become rife now.

Gundongan helps with the rest of the squad.
