My Double Gameweek plans and why the Wildcard/Bench Boost tactic has its downside

FPL BlackBox’s Az talks Double Gameweek 24 players, when the best time to play the Bench Boost is – and spreadsheets.

After a relentless run of games in which I feel like I have lived, breathed and slept football, we now have a few days off until we enter Double Gameweek madness.

Since my last article, things have been pretty unspectacular. Good to know that all the planning and sleepless nights were worth it, then.

In came my Everton and Manchester City players, but in true Az 2020/21 style, I’ve managed to dodge quite a few points by failing to hand llkay Gündogan (£6.0m) the armband at the right time and, of course, leaving Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.7m) on my bench for his huge 12-point haul away at Manchester United.

I’ve been around the million rank before, of course, and it feels bad, but I’m just waiting for that one big Gameweek that can really kick-start my season.

Looking at other managers, many are treading water at the moment, finding it hard to get ahead due to a strong template having emerged. Of course, plateauing for someone nestled snugly in the top 10k isn’t as bad compared to where I’m at.

I’ve tried to play my own game and be a bit more aggressive, captaining the likes of João Cancelo (£6.0m) and Michael Antonio (£6.7m). I even took a failed -8 in Gameweek 21. This has seen my rank barely shift in any direction. Frustrating.

But now things are getting exciting. This is the time in which the spreadsheets are out, the Double Gameweeks are starting and in theory, it’s when the sharpest and most engaged managers can start to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. My time is now. Well, in theory.

Planning for the DGW

I think I’m in pretty decent shape going forward. The -8 I took a few weeks ago, while not generating huge points for my team, has at least allowed me to get ahead of the curve this week.

I’ve got six Double Gameweek players in place and really, I’m not sure I want to triple up on Everton with their game against Manchester City not looking particularly inspiring and some fitness concerns with James Rodriguez (£7.7m).

If I was going to take a punt, I might consider the likes of Richarlison (£7.8m), but he’s without a goal now since Gameweek 13 and it’s difficult to strongly advocate a striker double-up from Everton, or breaking up a decent trio also containing Patrick Bamford (£6.7m) and Antonio.

Manchester City present an interesting selection dilemma for us this week. We never really know who Pep is going to play, but the fact that both Spurs and Everton present real challenges for his team, I would like to think that we will see strong teams in each match.

John Stones (£5.2m) put in another good performance against Liverpool, even scoring a disallowed goal in the process. But there is now the real threat of Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) filling in for him on occasion. It is worth noting however that in his last appearance, Laporte played at left-back, meaning that all three of himself, Stones and Ruben Dias (£6.1m) took to the pitch. I still think Stones is pretty safe in that backline given his performances – but looking at it from a Double Gameweek perspective, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see him miss one of the games. The FA Cup tie with Swansea may provide some clues on who will line up at the back for City.

I would be very reluctant, however boring, to go without Gündogan however. His form is incredible and doesn’t even look unsustainable given the role he is playing in the team and the quality of his finishing at the moment. Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) looks to be hitting form at an interesting time, too, and may even be a viable captain option this week over the likes of Calvert-Lewin and Gündogan.

I think those who have gone for three at the back for City have some decisions to make. Stick with what you’ve got and hope for a couple of clean sheets against quite tough opposition, or make the move for one of Gündogan or Sterling. For free (i.e. with two free transfers), I think I’d make the switch. If you are looking to captain one of them, then a hit probably is the right thing to do, too. I’d still be backing Gündogan over Sterling though, given his form.

Bench boost fears

While I’m pretty happy with how my team is set up, a bit of a monster bench score last week has brought into focus that I need to time my Bench Boost right, and the best opportunity to do so might be while my funds are so evenly spread out across my team, rather than waiting for another moment further down the line.

If I’d played it last week, I’d have got a solid return of 24 points. Looking at my team this week, I’m not sure there’s going to be a better time to play the chip. I could even move Son Heung-min (£9.6m) out for Marcus Rashford (£9.6m) and target the Red Devils against West Brom, in what is arguably the best fixture to have right now.

It would also solve my bench dilemma of who to drop out of Tomas Soucek (£5.4m) and Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m), who both have a home game against Sheffield United. It’s actually a bit of a shame that the potato-salad loving man from the Czech Republic went and got his ban overturned. Zero points and now a dilemma… great.

Alternatively, I could wait until Gameweek 26. I’ve still got the Wildcard to play, and I know a lot of people are thinking of using theirs in Gameweek 25 to attack whatever Double Gameweek we get. But a Wildcard/Bench Boost double-up would see me continue with funds spread right across my team. It would be nice to really focus on my starting XI with the Wildcard and not have the Bench Boost burning a hole in my pocket.

The other thing is that I’m looking at my team and not really seeing that much wrong with it in the longer term. While I am keen to readdress the “balance” (probably by moving for Harry Kane in a few weeks), I’ve got the majority of players who I want to keep in place. I’m not convinced that ripping this all up for one week is the answer – but of course, I will wait to see what doubles we have before making this decision.

Planning ahead

If you’re into spreadsheets, this is the time to fire up Excel and get planning.

It’s important to have a strategy in place of the players/teams you’re targeting and with strong benches, having a roadmap of the ones you think you’re comfortable benching can help not bring in unnecessary players and waste precious free transfers. Mark out your transfers (in a nice shade of yellow like I have) and your captains (try a nice calming blue) to make sure that your squads are in good shape for the weeks to come.

Something like the above took me about 10-15 minutes to fill out and I think I’m going to try and keep this going until the end of the season.

Good luck to you all for the coming Gameweek and get planning. It’s exciting times ahead!

Probably still yes due to Pool’s form and that Sterling usually starts the big games.

If he doesn’t play tonight, it’s more likely he’ll have minutes over the next few weeks

If anyone has the time to review my plan for the next few weeks, I’d really appreciate it.

Current: 2FT, 3.6ITB. BB, FH, TC available.

    Martinez
    Stones Cancelo Coufal
    Raph Gundo(C) Salah Bruno
    Antonio DCL Bamford

    (Fabri, Son, Justin, Mitchell)

This week: Fabri > Pope and play Pope for DGW24

DGW25: Coufal > Dallas so have 3 Leeds for DGW25

DGW26*: Salah > Grealish — Antonio > Kane — Mitchell > Dinge/Keane — Dallas > Targett/Cash (the last 2 players depend on prices but I want Everton and Villa defenders)
    *-8 hit to facilitate

This leave me with x13 DGW26 and Raph and Bam so I’ll bench boost.

The only player I don’t really want directly after this would be Pope so I’m not left with a load of dead wood.

    FH BGW29.

Good analysis on Gundo's upturn in form this season. Cancelo moving to CM when City have the ball is a big factor for Gundo's increase in shots in the box.

      Good analysis - thanks.

I think Cancelo is the must own city defender. Dias is admittedly more nailed but Cancelo’s attacking returns should offset any benchings

Could use some feedback, Good idea?

GW24: Stones, Soucek, Alioski -> Mee, Gundogan, Dallas (-4)
    GW25: Sterling -> Son

    The current team:

    Martinez
    Shaw, Dias, Stones, Coufal, Alioski
    Grealish, Salah, Bruno, sterling, Soucek
    Watkins, Antonio, Bamford

I would go cheaper on Burnely with lowton as doubt you will want after this GW and won't hold up that extra 0.5

Antonio was only out for a rest, nothing more. Yes a cup win would have been nice, but I think Moyes et al see there being a real shot at Europe in the league, and would rather have the Amazing Antonio rested.

I’ve had the same conundrum and don’t think it’s worth it as I want to move away from 2 city defends (keep Cancelo) and the price point puts me off and messes up my future plans.

With tougher games and less chance of CS, not worth it for me, even if Stones is rotated a bit

Normally I'm all about the content but this week it's so tough to follow everything when we know that the cup games might render so much of it obsolete. And of course no one can put out a video with all possible outcomes. Still going to bring in a City asset before deadline. It'll be Sterling almost assuredly. I'm going to have just 4 DGW players because I'm not seeing any of the other teams really going ham. DCL is my sole Toffee, and if he returns I see a loss of City CSs, but not a *huge* loss...

I already have double Leeds, and can readily grab a third. In fact if I were to buy a 3rd Leeds player there's no reason why I can't do this for this first DGW, for their single GW fixture, although it's risky right? Vestergaard is on the radar too, but we'll see. I hate opposing players on my team where avoidance is possible.

DCL to Kane will be a move down the line.

I really want Danny Ings in GW25. I thought he was very unlucky to get nothing vs Newcastle. Southampton are also getting all their best players back now. I think he's a very strong differential going forward.

It's somewhat frustrating right now, because I have decent players in my squad, but all the best ones are just out of reach.

I would really like Sterling for this week, Ings and Raphinha for next week. But it's proving very difficult to do.

It is but they have also the Villa game to reschedule so it's possible that Everton double in GW26 regardless of the FA Cup result. I think they're very likely to double in 26.

I'm thinking also thinking getting rid of Salah could be key - even though he well could score big, not many will captain unless he steps up big in next two, I think

Doesn't releasing Salah open it all up?

I realise letting go of a talisman and hauler like Salah is a tough call for most.

For instance he's had 3 goals in 9 league games.
But it's 5 in 10 which is good. Or 8 in 13 so you can cut the facts to suit a perspective.

Which ever way you go, hope the football gods smile on you.

                I've already TC'd.

WC I don't want to commit to yet. After I BB ideally in GW26.

If he gets three DGWs in a row he's a no brainer and will take him over Kane and TC Son instead in DGW26. If only 25&27 I prefer Kane.

Yeah looking at Ings as provisional captain for GW25 too

He is just soooooo good it’s unreal, admittedly I didn’t see the newcastle match but members area has him down for 4 shots in the box & 2 big chances - not scoring keeps him under the radar for another week

      - Salah > Gundo (c) GW24
      - Wood > Ings (c) GW25
      - Ings or Bamford > Kane (c) GW26
      - Sofa (c) for GW27 Salah vs Fulham

GW27 will probably be a double for City.

But otherwise, that looks a sound plan.

Yep - hoping that ciy double somewhat mitigates the risk of a Salah explosion vs Fulham

But will likely still need to captain my sofa that week with Salah at home to a promoted side

We’ve seen Leeds have a lot of joy counterattacking Leciester last week for Bamford haul though, and Traore did it all game for Wolves - they were very unlucky not to score - so Leicester on Saturday morning could see Mo scoring again, who knows

            "Salah explosion vs Fulham"

Fulham have been very disappointing to captain against so far this season for me. They're a decent side that don't get tonked and only lose by a few goals at most and also have a very good keeper in Areola. The defensive numbers recently reflect that too.

I'm still salty at the penalty Salah got against them to save his blushes just as Klopp was taking him off in the first game

Then Areola actually gets a hand to the pen but cant keep it out - If that had been saved the narrative on Salah would be very different & many more would probably have sold

Ings over bamford though when one of his matches is Chelsea? I'd be inclined to cap bamford and just take the differential points from ings.

Yeah. I'd lean Bamford (c) for 25 but I still would like Ings especially since he has two games in hand as well.

I would just marginally captain Ings - pretty sure Bamford is on penalties after taking the last one - but Ings is definitely on them - I’m ok with Bamford just hauling as he was sold in relatively large quantities after his couple of blanks so don’t think he’ll have >100% EO

          Still TBD though

Fair enough, personally I think he will be about 120% EO given many will sell Antonio to bamford that week and of course the captaincies on bamford will bump up his EO on top of his already 80% ownership.

    Pope
    Cancelo | Coufal | Mee
    Bruno | Salah | Sterling | Gundogan | Raphinha
    Antonio* | DCL

2 ft., 1.3m in the bank

    a) Justin to Digne (play 4-4-2)
    b) Salah, Antonio to Rashford, Vardy
    c) Salah, Raphinha to Rashford, JRod
    d) another option

    What to do?

      bench: Johnstone, Alioski, Justin, Bamford

    Team as it stands :

    Areola**
    Cancelo** Stones** Coufal AWB
    Bruno Salah Gündo Grealish Soucek
    DCL**
    (Martinez Holding Bamford Deco-Reid**)

    2FT £6.7 itb

Got to have Burnley defensive cover to mitigate any Pope hauls , as it doesn't make sense to bring in the Pope himself for me. So has to be Holding to either of Lowton/Mee. But who makes way to bench? AWB, GRealish or Soucek ?
And possibly lose Stones to make room for Sterling (would captain in that case) ?

don't bench DGW player-when else will you play him (Bobby)?

Holding out for Mee and bench Soucek and Coufal

Already played Bobby in BGW18 and DGW19 - not a big success as he got rotated. Had him 3rd on bench for his 7 point "haul", but plan to keep him on bench and play two strikers - he'll get a maxium of 3 points even with DGW.

But Holding to Mee surely good, and then choose between Coufal and Soucek for the bench

I'd focus on fixing weaknesses rather than chasing. Think about the weakest part of your team and what you'd do to fix it.

Always play the attacker over the defender (unless the defender doubles). So Bamford over Coufal.

      1. Pompel
        • 10 Years

DecoReid surely weakest part, bu he's purely bench filler until DGW26. Sadly no 2nd BB in hand, so might even opt for two up front in DGW26. So has to be Holding for Mee/Lowton as first priority - think it will be Lowton to try to squeeze in both of Kane and Son

          I'd streamline the team then.

I don't think Holding > Mee/Lowton is a good move personally. You don't have BB so you're basically using a FT to get 1 extra fixture out of a Burnley defender before he gets relegated to the bench forever seeing as you have such a strong defense.

I'd do BDR > Ings or Kane this week to setup future weeks. You're improving the weakest part of your team to prep for a tough run of games.

Interesting thought, could ofc get Kane this gw, but City away? And Southampton need to show some bounce back first. Burnely still likely to have dgw26 if Leicester bets Brighton in FAC, no?

Just got wildcard and TC left and pretty set on saving wildcard for gw30 to clean up after the blanks.

2fts and will bring in lowton Bamford and raphinha this week and next. Plus a hit to get kane (tc) for dgw26.

Think I'd then have 10 x dgws for 26 plus Bamford. And also 3 Leeds and coufal who play bgw29. Makes sense??? Thanks

    Martinez pope
    Cancelo dias chilwell coufal dallas
    Salah Bruno grealish gundog soucek
    Dcl antonio Watkins

    Thanks

    Anything worth a hit?
    Also worth playing the Benchboost?

    Pope (Mendy)
Concelo - Stones - Dias - Lowton (Coufal)
Salah - Bruno - Grealish - Soucek (Son)
    DCL - Antonio (Bamford)

    Pope
    Dias - Stones - Coufal
    Salah - Son - Bruno - Gundo - Soucek
    DCL - Antonio

    Martinez - Bamford - Dallas - Kilman

    I have 2 FTs.

Generally my plan for DGW25 is to do Soucek & DCL ➡ Raphinha & Kane for 2 FTs (have exact cash)

Just don't know what transfer to do this week, not to burn a FT - any ideas..?
Soucek ➡ 1-week punt for up to 8.7? (Mount? Hamez? Sb else..?)

    2fts and currently 7 DGWers for GW24:

    Pope*
    Pieters* Stones* Cresswell
    Soucek Sterling* Gundo* Salah Bruno
    DCL* D-Reid*

    McCarthy Coufal Bamford Dallas
    Also means 3 x DGW for 25.

    1. Coufal -> Dier/Davies (Spurs doubles coming)
    2. Stones > Cancelo
    3. Other?

Plan after that is probably Sterling/DCL > Son,Kane

    martinez son justin dallas

    Thoughts:

    2. Antonio out this week for Ashley Barnes and next week -4 for 2 DGW players & BB

If Everton have double in 26 is Robertson to Digne using second free transfer this week worthwhile (and play over Coufal) or carry transfer ? Other transfer likely to be Antonio to DCL
