The FPL Round-Up: Moyes talks Antonio fitness and Hammers’ penalty takers

We round up the Fantasy Premier League headlines of Monday evening as we look back at home wins for West Ham United and Chelsea, both of whom leapfrogged Liverpool in the Premier League table.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

RICE AND PENS

With Michail Antonio (£6.6m) injured and Mark Noble (£4.6m) on bench duty for large chunks of the season, the question over who would be next in line for West Ham United from 12 yards remained unanswered for months – until Monday.

It was the unlikely figure of Declan Rice (£4.7m) who grabbed the ball when the Hammers were awarded their first, overturned spot-kick against Sheffield United at the London Stadium and indeed it was the England international who despatched the 40th-minute penalty that put the Hammers in front.

So no luck for owners of Tomas Soucek (£5.4m), taker of 13 spot-kicks at previous club Slavia Prague – although David Moyes’ post-match comments hinted that there might be a different taker stepping up in future:

We want the organisation to be clear. If Mark Noble is on the pitch then he takes the penalty.

Next game we might try somebody different but this game it was certainly Declan [Rice].

TAKING THE MICHAIL

Antonio earns back-to-back start for first time since Gameweek 6

Antonio wasn’t involved in east London on Monday evening, missing out after failing a late fitness test.

“Fatigue” was cited as the reason for the striker’s withdrawal in the goalless draw with Fulham in Gameweek 23 and subsequent absence in the FA Cup fifth round last Tuesday.

But another hamstring problem is widely being attributed to Antonio’s non-involvement against the Blades, with David Moyes admitting after the game that the striker wasn’t even guaranteed to recover for Gameweek 25:

It wasn’t a risk to play him but we knew that he is in a position where something could happen and I don’t want to lose him for a long period. I hope that he’ll be fine for Sunday but I have no guarantee at this moment in time.

It was Jarrod Bowen (£6.0m) who was chosen to lead the line for the Hammers but it was Jesse Lingard (£6.0m) who again posed the greater goal threat, with the on-loan Manchester United midfielder topping the shot count table.

Bruno Fernandes (£11.5m) is the only FPL asset who has had more goal attempts than Lingard since the latter made the move to east London.

CROSS WELL

Aaron Cresswell (£5.8m) consolidated his position as FPL’s highest-scoring defender with a 12-point haul.

Cresswell, deployed as a centre-half in a back three on Monday and denied the chance to venture forward much from open play, supplied his ninth assist of a remarkable campaign when his 57th-minute corner was nodded home by Issa Diop (£4.3m).

The West Ham man is one of just two FPL defenders who has played every single minute of their side’s campaign so far and, continuing on his current rate of goal production, would go close to emulating Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.4m) total of 15 assists in 2020/21.

It was a case of what might have been for opposite full-back Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m), who missed a one-on-one opportunity in the second half.

Cresswell and Coufal might have to be reliant on their attacking returns in the next nine Gameweeks, however, with the Hammers’ clean sheet prospects mixed at best:

THOMAS THE TINK-ERER

Chelsea kept their fourth clean sheet in five league matches under Thomas Tuchel but relatively few Fantasy managers would have enjoyed the spoils, with not one of the back five – including goalkeeper Edouard Mendy (£5.1m) – that Frank Lampard favoured for much of 2020/21 making their new manager’s starting XI.

The decision to start Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.7m) over Mendy in Monday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United underscored just how difficult it is to pin Tuchel down to a settled starting XI, with centre-halves Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.7m) and Antonio Rudiger (£4.6m) and the two ‘number sixes’ now the only players boasting an ever-present record under their recently appointed head coach.

Marcos Alonso (£5.7m), again preferred over Ben Chilwell (£5.9m) at left wing-back, rolled back the years with another performance full of attacking potential: he had more shots than any other player at Stamford Bridge.

Timo Werner‘s (£9.2m) own mini-renaissance continued under his new manager, meanwhile.

Again deployed in his preferred position as a left-sided number 10, Werner made it 21 points in three Gameweeks under Tuchel with his first goal since Gameweek 8 – but not before he had missed two big chances in typically profligate fashion.

Newcastle’s own performance, which was improved after half-time, mirrored that of Sheffield United’s in the earlier kick-off: no lack of effort but, minus the injured Callum Wilson (£6.6m), no cutting edge in attack when it mattered.

Do you reckon I'm good to go for next GW with this squad? Debating Antonio > Kane would however be a -4, have more than enough in the bank.

    Pope
    Dias - Stones - Shaw
    Salah - Gundo - Bruno - Raphina
    Bamford - Antonio - Ings (c)

Bench: Martinez - Coufal - Soucek - Dier

      I'd say so.
I'm thinking I'll see how Kane/Spurs look this week then maybe make the Antonio to Kane move for the DGW.

I'll be honest I hadn't really thought about it, I have both WC and TC left, BB was a success so was my FH, was debating TC Kane in GW26, but i'm not 100% sure.

This would be my GW29 team if all the planned transfer are done.

    Martinez
    White Dallas Targett Cresswell
    Son Raphinha Grealish
    Kane Bamford Antonio/Maupay

    Pope/Fabri Gundo Bruno Dias

Looks ok but having too much Spurs attack and Villa defence tho...

With 11 you will be in a far greater position than most. The question is, what sacrifices do you have to make in 26, 27 and 28 for this?

In 26 I would probably have 9 doubles + White and Bamford
In 28 two FTs (Cancelo to Targett, Salah to KDB/Sterling)
In 29 a -4 hit (KDB/Sterling to Son, Pereira to Cresswell)

What transfer to make on this, I'm thinking Antonio for Watkins?

    Pope / Martinez
    Lowton / Dias / Dallas / Digne / Cresswell
    Raphinha / Bruno / Salah / Gundo / Sterling
    DCL / Bam / Antonio

Wait it out as much as you can. How much ITB? Ings would be the better shout.

Nothing ITB anymore, had loads but made a strong bench. I could take a hit this week to get Ings in and downgrade elsewhere. Or hold FT and have 2 for next GW

If you aren't WC in 26 then probably save the FT and hope Southampton disappoint.

Help greatly appreciated chaps and apologies for the long post! How do the below WC25 and BB26 Teams look?

    25:
    Martinez (4.5)
    Struijk*, Shaw, Dias (Stones, Konsa)
    Raphinha*, Salah, Fernandes, Gundogan (Son)
    Ings*, Bamford*, Kane

    26 (Ings, Bamford & Raphinha -> DCL, Watkins & Barnes (-8)
    Martinez*, 4.5*
    Stones*, Dias*, Konsa*, Shaw*, Struijk
    Salah*, Gundogan*, Fernandes*, Son*, Barnes*
    Kane*, DCL*, Watkins*

Assumes no Southampton DGW in 26. Some cheaper options like Struijk/Konsa over Dallas/Targett that allows me to keep hold of Salah. Gets BB out of the way with all the bench playing in BGW29.

    Cheers

Ings would be free. Bamford would be for a hit, as I have 3 Leeds players.

I hereby retire from this years FPL. Mendy and Antonio not playig were the cherry on the top of an unbelievably terrible 4 weeks where every single decison messed up.

Captaining Sterling over Gundo was just a nice little extra kick in the balls.

Chin up - Sterling over Gundo could yet work this week, or at least match him. Gundo a doubt and Everton rubbish.

it doesn't look like Gundogan will play any part of the Everton game so I would suggest there is still a good chance that Sterling will match or exceed his points.

You weren't the only one to go Sterling cpt over Gundo. At least we had Gundo and Sterling still could do well vs Everton and Gundo not play.

I triple captained Sterling, and have confidence in a return tomorrow... sneaky hattrick first half, who knows, maybe up on Andy's wall of legends. 13 point gap between the midfielders, so that's a clean sheet, goal and assist, and done.

& I think it's gas so many podcasts are talking about the WHU fixtures turning. It was the wingback formation that had them running riot against 'better' teams, and Spurs have a perpetual target on them... 3-3 at WHL & what's the betting we'll see goals again next weekend?

    Weird question.

Coufal or Mitchell out this week?

I'm planning to buy Veltman, so money doesn't matter. I'm still somewhat stubbornly clinging to Mitchell because if he gets his spot back this week, he will most likely have FUL/MUN DGW in 26 which I'd be happy to BB.

Coufal is going one way or the other but ofc, he's nailed on and if things go astray, I guess I could keep him.

Isn't White more nailed long term because of Lamptey?

Sure, Vetlman can play RCB, but the back three can still be White - Dunk - Webster

You are going to be spending transfers after GW26 on Cancelo, Foden who wont be starting every week, two Leeds defenders that return -1s in most weeks, Maddis and Barnes have Brighton and SHU which are kind of teams Leics don't do very well when they have most of the ball.

I will use in either week 30 or 31. I'm well set up for 25 and 26 double weeks and should be able to field 9/10 in blank 29 without hits. I'll be using transfers from 27 to 29 to set up for the blank week but will ultimately want rid soon after week 29.

    How about this draft trade?

    Mine:
    Bruno
    Ziyech
    Watkins

    His:
    Sterling
    Grealish
    Werner

    Who's benefiting from this?

I was tempted to bring Ings if the triple double do occur, but it would be 5 away matches in a row...

The fixtures are not appealing but it's quantity over quality. He's on pens and if he stays fit should get decent returns.

Ings is pretty fixture proof, it's whether he can play all the games

    Play one:

    A. Pope (WBA)
    B. Mccarthy (CHE + lee)

And would you lose any of these for Raphinha, would reverse the transfer next week:

    A. Son
    B. Maddison
    C. Gundo
    D. Save

Play Pope and Save. Raphina has potential to outscored all of those but I don't think it's certain enough to warrant 2 FTs.

would agree here. I like Raph a lot but seems a waste of 2 transfers. saying that, if no other planned move then I would go for it. Not worth it if it results in a hit though

      Thoughts on this?

      Currently have Watkins DCL Antonio

If Ings has a triple double announced before 25 deadline, Antonio to Ings
      Otherwise, Antonio to Bamford

Then Ings/Bamford to Kane in 26
      DCL to Bamford in 29

      £1.4m ITB
      A) Sterling > Raphina
      B) DCL > Ings
      C) Mee > Shaw
      D) WC then BB DGW26

      Likely DGW25 at present:
      Martinez

      DCL Bamford

In the same boat, have both but went Sterling Cpt. Even if Gundog plays there is a small chance Sterling outscores him heavily... it is the reason we picked Sterling as cpt, you never know! Personally I think Gundo is rested though.

Fixture announcement dependant, any thoughts on this WC draft? Planning BB26 and still have FH.

Would prefer Dallas over Struijk obviously, but only 0.3 in the bank and had to make a cut somewhere

      McCarthy, Martinez
      Cancelo, Stones, Targett, Shaw, Struijk
      Salah, Bruno, Gundo, Raphina, Grealish
      Kane, Ings, Bamford

I'm dismayed by my useless 1 point from Reece James. I'm rethinking my intention to use my FT to get Raphina in for next GW in favour of losing James for the guaranteed starter Ola Aina. Is that madness?

          You don't 'need' anyone.

Raphinha is likely the best player to own next week but after that, he wouldn't make it in my midfield.

Thankfully saved me from Dallas -1 but has to go IMO. Probs means not getting Raphina. In terms of replacement, a lot will depend on DGW26 confirmation.

Thing is, if I get Raphina (for Barkley), it leaves my bench with DCL v Liverpool, Antonio (likely out) and James (likely a non-starter). I don't feel comfortable with that.

      Do you consider Raphinha a must-have for GW25 ?

The last question - translating the Crellin spreadsheet, he had McCarthy, Johnstone, Areola as the order of likelihood. McCarthy and Areola was an either/or about 60/40, Johnstone was if there was a 7th additional game.
