Why looking at fixture runs after the expected Double Gameweek 26 is important

Three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser talks us through his Wildcard thoughts.

The Wildcard button is calling me and all I’m waiting for is the confirmed rearranged fixtures before I activate it – although I’m not sure if I’ll go through with it if we don’t get an annoucement before the Gameweek deadline.

This seems like a good time to step back and process information as a lot of us are going to make some key decisions in the next few weeks. With this article, I write about some players and trends that have gained my attention in the last few Gameweeks.

First up, let’s talk about Marcos Alonso (£5.7m). He looked a lot like his old self in the game against Newcastle and mustered five shots, four of which were from inside the box. He is definitely in my Wildcard thinking right now but I very well know that he isn’t exactly nailed. If you do want to roll the dice with Alonso, it is advisable only if you have a deep defensive bench. I get the feeling that he could drop a 15-pointer in any game if he continues in the same attacking vein. It looks like Tuchel is going to persist with the 3-4-3 formation and his comments with regards to Alonso seems particularly encouraging.

There are a couple of other reasons why I like this pick. Outside of a potentially difficult Double Gameweek in 26, Chelsea have a good run of fixtures around it. On top of that, they have posted strong underlying numbers in defence in the last few Gameweeks with only Manchester City conceding fewer shots in the box and big chances in the same period. It is worth mentioning again that if you decide to roll the dice with Alonso, a deep bench in defence is needed. There are safer, more nailed picks like Antonio Rüdiger (£4.6m) in play in case you’re not one to indulge in punts which are not nailed.

One mistake that all of us make is having a Double Gameweek tunnel. More often than not, you will find yourself with a team entirely focused on Gameweek 26 and the players you have picked might not have good fixtures afterwards. Keeping that in mind, I have pasted the Season Ticker below for Gameweek 27 and beyond which might help with some decisions.

There are a few key factors here that should influence your thinking. First up, it is likely that Southampton have a Double Gameweek in this period. Also, it is worth noting that their fixtures after Gameweek 26 are really good as well, which makes me pay closer attention to assets like Danny Ings (£8.4m) and Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m) despite their poor form. I personally expect a better performance from the Saints in the coming weeks because I rate their manager and a lot of their good players are back fit.

A lot of people are not sure about Ings at the moment. For me personally, based on the eye test, he has looked very sharp in the last three Gameweeks and has been fairly unlucky as well. In addition, I still like the Leeds fixture for an attacker, which is why it is worth going there in my opinion.

I have already spoken about the Chelsea fixtures around the potentially difficult Double Gameweek above. In addition to defence, Timo Werner (£9.2m) has been accumulating points at a good rate playing in his preferred left-forward position.

It is also worth noting that Leicester City, Liverpool, Leeds and Aston Villa have decent fixtures post-Gameweek 26, which allows you to carry their assets after the Double Gameweek. The advantage with Leeds players is that they have a good fixture in Blank Gameweek 29. It is possible that Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa could play in Gameweek 29 as well which is something worth considering while making your transfers.

Personally, I am even looking at cheap defensive assets from Brighton and Hove Albion because of two factors. They have good underlying numbers in defence and have decent fixtures in Gameweek 26, as well as Gameweek 29.

For those that are not Wildcarding in Gameweeks 25/26, there is a decent fixture shift in Gameweek 31 and it is potentially a good time to Wildcard then. The notable fixture shifts are as follows:

  • Aston Villa sit bottom of the Season Ticker in the period from Gameweek 31 to Gameweek 38 and a lot of us will be on at least two Aston Villa assets in that period.
  • Arsenal and Wolves have a great run of fixtures from Gameweek 31 onwards and not many of them are in our squads at the moment.
  • It is also worth noting that Spurs, Manchester City, Fulham and Southampton will have a Blank Gameweek 33.

Before ending this article, I want to bring to your notice a few player stats that have caught my eye in the last four Gameweeks:

I hope you find this article useful and it helps you plan better in this very important stage of the season, as every transfer we make needs to be very carefully thought through.

Good luck this Gameweek!

Leeds minimum coverage should be Bamford and Raphinha. I would probably roll FT instead of bringing in a Leeds def

Not for a hit. Would pioritize attackers over defenders in a Leeds team.

Raphinha and Harrison are good shouts

If No FH looking to plan ahead to BGW29, is Bamford + Raphina enough for DGW25??? Along with Ings. Can go Dallas but want to punt on Alonso

Planned moves to navigate both DGW’s:

    DGW25: Sterling/Antonio > Raph/Ings (-4)

    DGW26: Bamford/Kilman > Kane/Shaw (-4)

Would save the WC & give the option to BB in 26 whilst making the most of both DGW’s?

    1. HammersXI

Wouldn't take out Bamford regardless of DGW. You'll want him back soon for 29 and I'm quite sure the PP and SP are very much different.

I've done your exact moves for 25 this week, but intending to potentially ship both out the following week. (And yes saving the WC also)

      1. SharkyT

Wondering this myself. I have Stones, Cancelo and Gündogan at the moment but wildcarding. I will probably WC 2 in and leave a spot for maybe KDB. Although Foden is tempting me for the 3rd spot.

Pep will rotate a lot going forward surely. Which is why Ederson is tempting me a bit.

So Gündogan is surely 1 spot. Then a def Ederson/Dias I guess.

Do you think you will have much to change in GW30? I assume most won’t have or even want 11 for 29 unless FH? I mean most will have 2/3 villa 2/3 spurs and Brighton def and maybe 1/2 Leeds..is there any harm in continuing with these players? Most will keep the big hitters through that blank anyway?

          1. LC1
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 1 month ago

By GW26 I'll have 2 Leeds, 2 Spurs and 1 West Ham, so can bring in a few more for BGW29 and play with 6 or 7.

If you own the big hitters then it's not worth WCing or FHing for the blank IMO

            1. Tonyawesome69
              • 5 Years
              3 years, 1 month ago

Yup I can probably manage BGW29 with 2-3 Leeds, 1-2 WHU, 1-2 Spurs and 1-2 Villa. FH33 is my plan.

My point is though, will you need to WC in 30/31 if you have most of the big hitters in? I’m just wondering if you get your optimal squad this week with say 11 DGW26 and 4 players who play 29 on bench plus villa and spurs your set up for 26 and 29, so will you have much to change in 30/31 to justify a WC?

I’m in two minds at the minute I can still get 10DGW out but obviously not the ideal ones. I just debating whether WC in the correct ones this week will outweigh using it in 30 with maybe not as much upside?

        1. HammersXI
          • 11 Years
          3 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, I'm in the same situation as you. Can get 10 DGW with 2 -4 hits this and next week.

Then again which of the 'correct' ones are you missing? Even if you wildcard them now, does the changes make sense long term? Cause that's what a WC should be used for

          1. Feed tha Sheep
            • 11 Years
            3 years, 1 month ago

But if you wait until 30/31 you are getting less of an advantage from it IMO. It’s def a hard decision..I want Ings Raphina this week Kane Son Martinez for next week and have a few I want rid of Adams Richarlison Justin etc

            1. HammersXI
              • 11 Years
              3 years, 1 month ago

I actually have all the players already that you mentioned. Hence I don't see a point for myself to WC.

It's only less of an advantage if you don't have the players I guess. I just don't find it worth WC when I could just do 2 -4 hits.

I might even wait later on past 30/31. The season is still long and there's still so much uncertainty.

But yes, I agree it's a hard decision and there's no clear cut path rn

I don’t get one thing about playing WC now:

    - you get 3 Lee players and maybe Ings for 25
    - you want to BB but Lee playing AV in 26 ain’t the best fixture
    - if you remove Lee after 25, you will need them anyway for 29

    1. HammersXI
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 1 month ago

Hits in DGW can be easily done and with less impact. Also Leeds won Villa 3-0 in the reverse fixture (fyi).

If I'm on a WC I would only have 2 Leeds and 1 Sou and might only keep bamford till 29 where I'll get Raph again. Leeds fixtures aren't the easiest.

Essentially there will be a lot of sideways movement

I don’t care about previous games but current performance - wouldn’t feel comfortable either playing double Lee attack vs Martinez not taking hits week after WC

That's what everyone said and ppl benched Bamford cause of Martinez and he scored a hat trick. Martinez isn't a god. He still concedes goals. I would trust playing double Leeds against anyone baring City esp when KP is fit and playing.

Its definitely not an ideal situation. Thats why I dont want to play the wildcard this week.

Another reason could be people are regularly taking hits to get to the team they want. This could be a good opportunity to make big changes whilst attack DGW26

This is exactly what I realized and is causing problems. You either have a godo week in 25 and a bad bench boost. Or a weaker 25 and a better bench boost.

There's no way of doing both well unless you take like a -8 or more.

      1. Konstaapeli
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

You can have a good week in 25 even if you own zero Leeds/Southampton. Other players can score points too. You can also take a hit and swap them for dgw players next week.

          You know what I mean...

Have more DGW25 players like Bamford, Raph, Ings, Dallas. Having all of them means my BB in 26 ain't gonna be great.

            • 7 Years
            3 years, 1 month ago

I plan to WC this week (if doubles are confirmed) and have only Bam, Dallas and Ings for 25. One hit means full 15 DGW's for 26 if I want to set it like that.

But you don't want that either because you need to cover 29. I do at least because I don't have FH.

That said, I can get 7-9 for 29 (depending the spurs-avl fixture) with FT's so might opt to FH in 33 instead. I'll cross that bridge when we get there.

    5. HammersXI
      • 11 Years

Also not everyone who is wildcarding has 3 Leeds btw. Most have 2. You could easily ship them out or exchange players with FT without hits from 26 to 29

To sum up, I may just take 2 hits over next 2 GWs and go without WC and BB - just may play TC for Kane 26

You can give yourself the best 11 players for GW26 and enough players that you need for blank 29 and overall improving your team. I personally can’t see a better time to use it. I can get 10 for DGW26 but they arnt the 10/11 that I would want. I want a few spurs and Martinez etc in which I could get with multiple hits but at the end of the day if you have a WC sitting I don’t think taking multiple hits is worth it. When and why are you using it?

I have yellow flags on Gundo, Anontio & DCL.

Probably just going to have less than 4-5 hours to decide on my BB & Wildcard strategy tomorrow.

If all are fit or only one is injured I will play the BB this week and wildcard next week otherwise I have to plan for another strategy.

Why force the BB? BB'ing Antonio vs Spurs and DCL vs Liverpool is not worth it.

I feel ill lose more points planning for BB with my transfers or wildcard than ill gain from it.

Also there are no standout cheap assets for BB DGW26. Its either single gameweek players like Leeds/Brighton or Fulham/Burnley players with bad fixtures.

Also its impossible for me too own Kane, Salah/KDB, Bruno & Son with a good BB team.

I want 4 of them atleast and that's also possible only if one of them is Son. Haven't even mentioned Vardy yet.

The cost of having a bench is not being taken into account here for future gameweeks as it not really quantifiable.

Not sure about that. I wouldn't be surprised to see Antonio & DCL on the scoresheet this week and its not like they are facing teams who are keeping clean sheets in fact both teams are struggling to keep opponents out.

But you're also fielding defenders this week. You're essentially giving up a forward slot for a DGW. That's quite unappealing imo.

Not if Villa do a job on Leeds.

Spurs/Pool have been conceding for fun. Not like they cant concede a goal against West Ham/Everton.

Also the bench in 26 might end up being better but it might cost me more points in my starting 11 every week after that.

This is a draft I've just done for fun in 1 minute, you can make it even better for sure:

          Martinez, McC
          Cancelo, Shaw, Rudiger, Targett, Struijk
          Salah, KDB, Son, Gundo, Raphinha
          Kane, Bamford, Watkins

Bench in 26 is McC and 3xLeeds. Cheap def rotation and Raphinha is the perfect 8th attacker

You can even take Ings instead of Kane for one week

I dont like this team at all tbh.

Id want someone like Grealish or Barnes or DCL or Ings over Raphinha & Bamford for DGW26 and future doubles.
Also that defence is a car crash for future gameweeks. Lots of rotation possible there.

Great article. If other players hadn't figured out this fixture swing, they don't need to now. And that is the downside of all these articles - eventually we'll all have pretty much the same teams in the future, even more so than now, and especially if players follow the captain poll every week. It's hard to climb the ranks with a sneaky differential because they soon become broadcast somewhere.
This maybe sour grapes because City and Burnley didn't keep clean sheets last night, but this article is just another nail in the coffin that my season is residing in!
