Why looking at fixture runs after the expected Double Gameweek 26 is important

Three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser talks us through his Wildcard thoughts.

The Wildcard button is calling me and all I’m waiting for is the confirmed rearranged fixtures before I activate it – although I’m not sure if I’ll go through with it if we don’t get an annoucement before the Gameweek deadline.

This seems like a good time to step back and process information as a lot of us are going to make some key decisions in the next few weeks. With this article, I write about some players and trends that have gained my attention in the last few Gameweeks.

First up, let’s talk about Marcos Alonso (£5.7m). He looked a lot like his old self in the game against Newcastle and mustered five shots, four of which were from inside the box. He is definitely in my Wildcard thinking right now but I very well know that he isn’t exactly nailed. If you do want to roll the dice with Alonso, it is advisable only if you have a deep defensive bench. I get the feeling that he could drop a 15-pointer in any game if he continues in the same attacking vein. It looks like Tuchel is going to persist with the 3-4-3 formation and his comments with regards to Alonso seems particularly encouraging.

There are a couple of other reasons why I like this pick. Outside of a potentially difficult Double Gameweek in 26, Chelsea have a good run of fixtures around it. On top of that, they have posted strong underlying numbers in defence in the last few Gameweeks with only Manchester City conceding fewer shots in the box and big chances in the same period. It is worth mentioning again that if you decide to roll the dice with Alonso, a deep bench in defence is needed. There are safer, more nailed picks like Antonio Rüdiger (£4.6m) in play in case you’re not one to indulge in punts which are not nailed.

One mistake that all of us make is having a Double Gameweek tunnel. More often than not, you will find yourself with a team entirely focused on Gameweek 26 and the players you have picked might not have good fixtures afterwards. Keeping that in mind, I have pasted the Season Ticker below for Gameweek 27 and beyond which might help with some decisions.

There are a few key factors here that should influence your thinking. First up, it is likely that Southampton have a Double Gameweek in this period. Also, it is worth noting that their fixtures after Gameweek 26 are really good as well, which makes me pay closer attention to assets like Danny Ings (£8.4m) and Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m) despite their poor form. I personally expect a better performance from the Saints in the coming weeks because I rate their manager and a lot of their good players are back fit.

A lot of people are not sure about Ings at the moment. For me personally, based on the eye test, he has looked very sharp in the last three Gameweeks and has been fairly unlucky as well. In addition, I still like the Leeds fixture for an attacker, which is why it is worth going there in my opinion.

I have already spoken about the Chelsea fixtures around the potentially difficult Double Gameweek above. In addition to defence, Timo Werner (£9.2m) has been accumulating points at a good rate playing in his preferred left-forward position.

It is also worth noting that Leicester City, Liverpool, Leeds and Aston Villa have decent fixtures post-Gameweek 26, which allows you to carry their assets after the Double Gameweek. The advantage with Leeds players is that they have a good fixture in Blank Gameweek 29. It is possible that Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa could play in Gameweek 29 as well which is something worth considering while making your transfers.

Personally, I am even looking at cheap defensive assets from Brighton and Hove Albion because of two factors. They have good underlying numbers in defence and have decent fixtures in Gameweek 26, as well as Gameweek 29.

For those that are not Wildcarding in Gameweeks 25/26, there is a decent fixture shift in Gameweek 31 and it is potentially a good time to Wildcard then. The notable fixture shifts are as follows:

  • Aston Villa sit bottom of the Season Ticker in the period from Gameweek 31 to Gameweek 38 and a lot of us will be on at least two Aston Villa assets in that period.
  • Arsenal and Wolves have a great run of fixtures from Gameweek 31 onwards and not many of them are in our squads at the moment.
  • It is also worth noting that Spurs, Manchester City, Fulham and Southampton will have a Blank Gameweek 33.

Before ending this article, I want to bring to your notice a few player stats that have caught my eye in the last four Gameweeks:

I hope you find this article useful and it helps you plan better in this very important stage of the season, as every transfer we make needs to be very carefully thought through.

Good luck this Gameweek!

What point is there in relating the price of a top centre forward to what was a stupidly inflated fee for a centre half? You might as well say that if Haaland was only £20m then the much older Kane should be £15m. 🙄

What to do, not really happy with my team. Strong(ish) bench but feel like I'm missing some assets for the DGWs...

    Martinez/Pope

    Lowton/Dias/Dallas/Cresswell/Digne

    Gundo/sterling/bruno/salah/raphinha

    Dcl/antonio/bam

Time to WC? I would like 1 or 2 Leicester players and likely Ings/Werner/Kane at some point, would it be worth taking a hit to get Ings in this week?

Asked this question on the last page and none of the responses actually have any helpful logical answer. Can someone explain why when DGW caps like gundo who make a non appearance don't default to the VC when that VC appears eg foden.

This isn't a gripe. I didn't cap gundo. I'd just like to understand the logistics beyond answers like 'thats dumb' and 'its the same game week's

    Cheers in advance

You captain has played a game already in a GW, if he has played a game the VC will never default somewhere else, that is how FPL has always worked?
Are you wanting it to give Gundo (C) points for 1st fixture and Foden (VC) dbl points for the 2nd fixture in same GW because he was injured??

      1. Pacer.
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

I am not 'wanting' anything. I am interested why the decision that substitutions for non players and switces to vice captains count only in single game weeks and in one fixture within double game weeks

        Why?

        What's the rationale

        1. theplayer
          • 10 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

It's quite simple. There are 180 possible minutes in a DGW and Gundo played 90 so played minutes. Look at it in a minutes way rather than a 2 games way.

          1. Pacer.
            • 9 Years

Why would you look at it that way. These are two entirely separate gamesm if he played 30 minutes in each should he be awarded a clean sheet point?

Nobody has managed to explain this yet beyond 'its the way it is'

            1. VTown

        2. VTown
          • 3 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

The rationale is probably so you can't have two different captain scores in the same gameweek. Makes complete sense.

Person A captains Gundogan and vice-captains Aina.

Person B captains Aina and vice-captains Gundogan.

          If the VC came in for the second fixture, person A scores (Gundogan's 19 + Aina's 9) x 2 = 56 points.

          Person B just gets Aina's 20 x 2 = 40 points.

In the current set-up, person A gets 38 points and person B gets 40 points.

Which seems more fair, that the player who picked the highest scoring player for the week gets the most points, or the player who happened to get lucky with an injury gets *16* more points than the person who picked the highest scoring player.

If your captain plays one minute in the gameweek he stays your captain. Your vice captain only becomes your captain if your original captain doesn't play.

The answer "it's the same gameweek" isn't dumb, it's the right answer. Best to look at it this way, in a double gameweek your player is playing for 180 minutes, not 90. If their feet touches the pitch at any time in these 180 minutes, you don't get vice captain.

      1. Pacer.
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

Gundogan is playing for 2 x 90 minutes, not 180 minutes. No other rules in the game would combine minutes from two matches. Eg a defender being awarded a clean sheet for playing 2 x 30 minutes and not conceding. These are separate games, that happen to be within one gameweek. So why are these games combined as one game? What's the actual logic

        1. GreennRed
          • 12 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

If you pick Gundogan as your first choice captain for the double gameweek. In the same way you pick him as captain for a single gameweek. His two game points are tallied into one total for the gameweek and doubled. If he plays 1 minute or 180 he's still your captain. If he doesn't play it's your VC on double points. Double game in one gameweek.

i already told you mate, its 1 GW and he played in it..

Same reason a striker gets 4 points for goal vs. a midfielder getting 5 points, or a keeper who makes 2 saves then 4 saves in a DGW only getting one save point despite having 6 saves in the gameweek, or only being able to save maximum 2 free transfers instead of more, or only being allowed to play one chip per gameweek, or not knowing for sure when player's prices are going to rise or fall, or getting minus 4 points for a transfer hit, or the 3 players in a game getting bonus points...

      Its da rulz innit

If your captain plays in a gameweek he's your captain for the gameweek, if your captain doesn't play in the gameweek, your vice captain will come in

So basically nobody can actually explain this beyond 'its the rules', 'its one game week' and 'think of it as 180 minutes'

I mean, I'm not saying I'm right that it seems wrong, but I did expect better responses

Query it on the rules page.

Surely this has been answered well enough, though? It's the same binary logic that applies to every gameweek (gameweek, not match) and always has: if your captain plays at all, he's your captain. Only in the event of him not playing at all does the captaincy move on to vice captain.

Seems pretty straightforward and I don't know what kind of extra answer you are after.

And you're being quite rude to people along the way.

Why does it seem wrong though? You think the "right" thing to do would be to allow two different captain scores in the same gameweek?

I think it's been well explained, it's you're lack of understsnding that's the issue.

    A) Maddison, Cancelo, Targett, Struijk
    B) Barnes, Cancelo, Konsa, Dallas
    C) Maddison, Dias, Konsa, Dallas

Currently on A as Struijk looks a decent shout for the $, although after some advice I am now a little concerned he may lose his place before BGW29

    Cheers

Dallas, Raphina and Bamford to play in GW25. Whom to keep for BB in GW26. Will have 1 FT.
Looking DCL in so is it worth taking a hit for a single GW?

Dias and Gundo for sure. Then it depends on your set up. KdB is hard to fit in with Salah Bruno and Kane. If you're happy to lose one for KDB it could have big upsides

I think so, I think he probably thought it wasn’t worth the risk in a game that they likely lose anyway (Although he won’t say that publicly)

Liverpool is a huge game for them though so I think he comes back

Seen so many people wildcarding this week going without the likes of DCL, KDB or Leicester attackers which seems madness given the fixtures they have from DGW26 onwards.

Wildcard teams will look completely different next week imo.

I was always planning on WC this week and then BB GW26. However I can get 10 out with no hits for DGW26 already so I feel its a waste of a wildcard.

Is spending my Wildcard and Bench Boosting to get 14/15 DGW's worth it when I can have 11 anyway with a -4?

Got my Free Hit as well so BGW 29 is not an issue either way.

Cavani to A Ings or B Kane on free transfer and is team gtg? Or take hit on removing Sterling also to Sala or KDB?

    Cancelo Dallas Robertson

    Ings/Kane* Watkins Bamford

KDB is too expensive and Foden can be benched. Any other wildcarders considering double city attack ?

Aguero if he returns. But probably more rotation than usual either side of Monchengladbach games and beyond as the league is won.
