Will Kevin De Bruyne’s return from injury affect Ilkay Gundogan’s FPL form?

Ilkay Gundogan (£6.2m) has been one of the unexpected success stories of 2020/21 in Fantasy Premier League.

Having never previously hit double figures for attacking returns in a single campaign, the German has plundered 11 goals and three assists in his last 15 appearances.

His ownership now sits 37.5% in FPL overall, with that figure rising to 91% in the top 10,000.

Poring over the comments on this site and beyond, it’s evident that some Fantasy managers are pondering about the implications of Kevin De Bruyne‘s (£11.8m) recent return from injury.

We’ll take a brief look at how Gundogan has performed with and without the Belgian of late in this Premium Members piece.

Ffs... I'm stuck between Lingard and Raphinha as Barnes replacement. The MU fixture for Lingard is a non issue for me, I have cover. So for me it's just who is the better pick. They are both in form, but as a MU fan, I just don't trust Lingard :/. Don't know what to do. Who should I get? First to most votes.

Iheanacho a good call - had no idea that he was that cheap. I was contemplating holding Vardy for it.

There's a very good fixture for him in 28 after all and Maja and Fulham have a truly horrible fixture run and are toothless up front anyway.

I'm losing Mo. His personal output has been okayish over the last run but Liverpool - and Klopp for that matter - look lost. Fulham is a meh fixture as is Wolves. Not sure Kane's fixtures are that much better given 0-0 at United more or less locked in but Spurs look to be travelling in the right direction anyway

I like Iheanacho as a punt, would just be worried about gametime, it will depend on what formation Rodgers goes with which will likely decide if he plays or not and I think I read he said Perez might be in contention next week. But Iheanacho certainly didn't do himself any wrong the other night, far more involved in the game than Vardy and a goal so if you have cover in case he doesn't play I think it's worth a pop

Some thoughts and hopefully some discussion about all of this football recently. I feel like players, teams and staff are getting closer to being physically and in some ways more importantly, mentally exhausted. How is this going to reflect upon football for the last 10 or so GWs and more importantly FPL?

Will we see more clean sheets?
I have no data to hand, correct me if I am wrong, but I see there has been more clean sheets the last 4 or 5 GWs. Is this because mentally players are so exhausted that they cannot summon up the creativity to unlock these defences? We are certainly seeing this with Liverpool and to a lesser extent Man U.

On the other side of the coin, will we see more clean sheets because teams are so exhausted that they are falling back and defending their final third? You commonly see this in the last 10 mins of a game where a team is defending a lead. Is this now being extended to greater swathes of time in matches through exhaustion?

Staff exhaustion and lack of time between matches. Are coaches focusing on defensive drills and strength due to their own mental exhaustion? The lack of coaching time between matches may have an impact on an ability to coach and drill attacking rhythms. Focusing on keeping a tight defensive unit is "easier" to coach. We see this in international football with international coaches having less time on the training pitch with their players.

Is it time to put money in our defensive 5? 5 at the back? Chelsea?

Another point with all of this football is how the largest teams with the biggest rosters of international class footballers have managed to balance successfully all of these games. We have seen this with Man City and Chelsea and conversely have seen this with Liverpool with their stretched team. Are we about to see a decline with Leicester with the impacts on their first 11 and a renaissance with Spurs with their large squad?

What do we think on targeting clean sheets & those teams with larger resources against volume of games?

This is very close to my side, only I've just ditched Salah for KDB - which is a strange unneccessary move, but I'll be chaging KDB to Son for the blank.

Yeah, I don't think Lingard or Watkins offers you anything extra here really - though there is a chance Villa will have a double next week.

          Rest 100% okay

The one miss is WH. I'm punting on them big time over the next three. Not just a form team but they have a kind schedule and almost uniquely don't look on their last legs. I'm thinking that the mass blanks will continue for the DGW teams (City apart as they have 2 squads). Banking on relative freshness and no Europe.

Antonio gets into my team in 29. Good fixtures post that. My planned team starting 30 is:

            Martinez (Forster)
            Stones Tierney Rudiger (Lewis Struijk)
            Salah KDB Bruno Gundo (ESR)
            Kane Antonio Richarlison

              Nice

I see the logic of Mo given fixtures on run in. But Liverpool look so broken right now (including Klopp) that even his ticking over currently means I'm happy enough to part with him

The one issue I see is the combo of Lewis and Struijk with ESR. I'm assuming Struijk will be irrelevant soon enough and for different reasons both Tierney and Stones have slight question marks over them.

I'm losing Mo this week to help restructure team over the next 4/5 or so. Your Mo money would go on a fifth mid (Saka, Raph or Neto) and a fairly heavy hitting defender (Digne?) on my scheme of things

You are correct about the Struijk, Lewis, ESR issue. I am not too sure about Richarlison in that team actually. I might either go with Bamford or Raphinha and use the extra cash to upgrade those 3.

All the Fantasy stars align next Wednesday folks. By far and away the best club in the Premier League entertain a pub team who would be ELEVEN points adrift of Sheffield United at the bottom of the Premier league if their form over the last eight game weeks - that's a pretty reasonable sample btw - had been the same from the outset. This could be an absolute massacre. Not only do the hosts batter them in left, right and centre, their guests concede NINE on a regular basis. If you're sitting with two of KDB, Sterling, Gundogan, Mahrez or Fodan with a Dias, Cancelo or Stones at the back then ditch that defender and take a hit to make it a trio of attackers...you MUST hedge against rotation. Six points is all fine and well but Ederson could quite easily cannon a clearance off one of their arses straight into the net to inflict a painful zero while the guy you could have had for a measly -4 gets 20+ points. Your mini league could depend on it. For the people amongst us who like a flutter, there is the opportunity to increase your worldly wealth by 25%. This is free money, this is a giveaway.

    Back to work.

I think Stones and Cancelo will play both.

Too much of a fanny on chopping and changing now.

Case of fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Do it, I think DCL is going through the same form as he did last season. Great start, poor ending.

      I'd say so, yes.

Objectively yes. Although an Everton DGW announcement could change that.

DCL > Ings pointless given that Saints are toothless at the moment? They do play SHU (and City).

    A) KDB, Gundo, Dias

    or

    B) KDB, Cancelo, Dias

Feel that Cancelo might end up with more points over the next 2 game weeks.

There's a risk Cancelo or Dias might miss at least one of the games, and will concede. Maybe Gundo at least scores or assists even if he plays only one. So I'd go A for that reason, but I'd probably have kept Cancelo over Dias as he played less last week and may therefore get a start in both matches.
