The Scout Squad’s best players for FPL Gameweek 28

The Scout Squad panel reconvenes to champion the best players for Gameweek 28, which is the first ‘non-double’ Gameweek in over a month.

Only three Fantasy assets get unanimous backing this week, which is a reflection of the tough-to-call nature of the fixtures.

For those new to this feature, Fantasy Football Scout editor David, deputy editor Neale, video content manager Andy and Pro Pundit Tom each put forward an 18-man long-list of players and explain their notable inclusions and omissions below.

The assets listed will then be narrowed down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83.0m) for the weekly Scout Picks selection ahead of the FPL deadline at 18:30 GMT on Friday.

In each writer’s squad, there are requirements for at least:

  • One goalkeeper costing £5.0m or less
  • One sub-£5.0m defender
  • One midfielder listed at £6.5m or below
  • One forward priced at £7.5m or lower

Each panelist is also restricted to no more than three players from the same team, as is the case in FPL.

We will again be adding a captaincy to the Scout Picks, with details of that revealed on Friday.

DAVID SAID

I trust Manchester City’s defence more than I trust their attack in Gameweek 28. That’s largely on account of Alphonse Areola‘s form of late, with Fulham conceding just one goal or fewer every match from Gameweek 23 onwards.

The Citizens’ own backline remains the most productive this season while Fulham have blanked in two of their last three outings; hence the inclusion of Ederson and Ruben Dias.

Lucas Digne looks a good shout for Gameweek 28 considering Burnley’s own troubles in front of goal this season, especially on the road. Only Sheffield United (six) have scored fewer away goals than the Clarets (eight) thus far while Gylfi Sigurdsson is the only Everton player to have created more chances than Digne over the last four.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles continues to operate in a midfield role and ranks second among West Bromwich Albion players for touches in the final third over the last four matches. During that same period, the Baggies have three clean sheets and Crystal Palace have blanked twice.

Finally, Joel Veltman is top among all defenders for expected goal involvement over the last four matches, a period in which Southampton have netted three goals and failed to score on two occasions.

Gareth Bale is looking like an increasingly viable asset, even if Jose Mourinho is going to manage his minutes. The Welshman has produced two double-figure hauls in the last three and is already forming an effective partnership with Harry Kane, who sits top of the league for shots in the box and second for shots on target among all players during their last four outings.

Over the same period, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is second only to Kane for minutes per expected goal involvement (xGI).

Richarlison looks set to benefit from Burnley’s recent struggles. The Clarets have the third-worst expected goals conceded (xGC) over the last four matches while Everton’s Brazilian forward is top among his colleagues for shots in the box, big chances and shots on target.

NEALE SAID

With this entry being written on Thursday morning, there are some selections that make the cut based on midweek breathers (Joao Cancelo, Mason Mount) and others (Gareth Bale) whose inclusion may well hinge on how many minutes they are afforded in the UEFA Europa League.

Form is even more paramount than usual in this week of middling fixtures.

Cesar Azpilicueta has that in spades, as he averages 6.7 points per match since Thomas Tuchel was made manager. He’s the only Chelsea player who hasn’t had a benching since Tuchel took over and while that could well mean a breather is just around the corner, he is trusted implicitly by the German and reportedly accompanies his boss to meetings with match officials. On top of significant clean sheet potential, he has supplied 11 chances from centre-back since the change in head coach, evoking memories of his time under Antonio Conte.

Azpilicueta’s teammate Mason Mount sits in the top ten midfielders for shots and chances created since Tuchel’s appointment, so offers all-round appeal further forward.

Pedro Neto has been posting near-identical figures to Mount in terms of goal threat and assist potential from Gameweek 20 onwards, so I’ve included the Wolves man against a Liverpool defence that still has plenty of questions to answer on the domestic front.

Anwar El Ghazi is expected back from injury for the trip to Newcastle, who have conceded more chances from their right flank than any other club in their last six matches. With Jack Grealish still sidelined, the left-wing berth should be El Ghazi’s to reclaim. A trigger-happy winger whose radar is sometimes a bit misaligned, El Ghazi has the best minutes-per-shot average of any FPL midfielder who has made more than two starts this season.

Leicester City aren’t in great shape but, on paper, they have the best fixture of the weekend – Sheffield United at home. The ‘out of position’ potential of Ricardo Pereira keeps me interested in the Portuguese full-back despite poor recent returns, while I’ve opted for Kelechi Iheanacho over Jamie Vardy in attack. Those two forwards have started the last three matches together, with Iheanacho outperforming his strike partner by two goals to nil and by nine shots to two.

Finally, I can see little in the way of goalmouth action at Selhurst Park this weekend, so Kyle Bartley gets the nod as my budget defender pick,. The Baggies are in decent defensive nick and the Palace backline has allowed more headed attempts and set-piece chances than any other club in their last six matches, so Bartley – who has three goals to his name already this season – could prosper at both ends of the pitch.

TOM SAID…

I’ve doubled up on Everton’s defence this week ahead of Saturday’s home game against Burnley. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have given up just two goals in their last four and prior to Monday’s defeat at Stamford Bridge had kept three consecutive clean sheets. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has put in some quality displays of late, and I’m expecting Lucas Digne to take control of his flank and collect points at both ends of the pitch.

West Bromwich Albion also get a defensive double-up from me, via Sam Johnstone and Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The Baggies have proved difficult to break down in recent matches and take on a Crystal Palace side who often struggle in front of goal. It’s another relegation six-pointer, which is why I’ve also included Mbaye Diagne, who is getting chances but must improve his conversion rate.

Rounding off the backline is goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who continues his quest for the Golden Glove at Newcastle United, plus defenders João Cancelo, Luke Shaw and Antonio Rüdiger.

Further forward, Bruno Fernandes, Son Heung-min and Harry Kane’s inclusion needs little explanation, so I’ll focus on some of my other picks.

While the emergence of Kai Havertz is exciting, Mason Mount feels like the safer midfield option having been handed a break on Monday night. The England international has established himself as a key player under Thomas Tuchel and should return to the starting XI at Leeds United, a match I see him thriving in.

Meanwhile, Manchester City saw their 21-game winning streak end last weekend, with Kevin De Bruyne uncharacteristically misplacing several passes. However, his creativity numbers on the day suggest he was unfortunate not to return as he ended the match as his team’s biggest expected goal involvement (xGI) underachiever. Sure enough, he was back among the points in midweek.

For a team missing some of their biggest attacking threats, I thought Leicester City did okay at Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 27. Jamie Vardy has scored just once in his last 11 league games but Kelechi Iheanacho is now producing the goals to fill the void, and has probably shown enough to keep his place. Youri Tielemans has been doing a lot of good work in the final third too, and as I’m expecting a routine home win, an attacking double-up feels fine.

The forward line is completed by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ollie Watkins.

ANDY SAID

I’ve not yet completely given up on Liverpool. Although their defence has been breachable recently, they are playing a Wolves side in the bottom five for shots in the box over the last six matches. In that same time, Trent Alexander-Arnold has created 13 chances and had nine shots.

I’m willing to take a risk on Gareth Bale this week. I still have some doubts about his starts, and we can see that his minutes are being managed, but he’s doing a lot of good stuff with the game-time he is getting. Since Gameweek 24, when he came back into the side for 18 minutes against Man City, he’s had seven shots in the box in just 271 minutes. That’s four more than Son Heung-min has had in 450 minutes. Son is the safer play, but Bale looks better for goals at the moment.

It feels wrong to back against Dominic Calvert-Lewin given the season he’s had but it’s difficult to look past Richarlison’s recent numbers. Between Gameweeks 25-27, he’s had eight shots in the box compared to Calvert-Lewin’s four (in 57 fewer minutes). He’s also doubled his total number of shots (10 v 5). It does feel like more of a Calvert-Lewin game but we know that Carlo Ancelotti has come out and said he’s sacrificed his position in favour of Richarlison, which is why I’ve backed him.

A - Looking at Sterling's previous starts, he hasn't been benched for 2 games in a row since GW19 including cup games. He should start but I can see he is frustrating to own

I owned Sterling for weeks ahead of DGW26 and got so sick of him wasting chances I binned him for Mahrez. Yes he probably plays v Fulham and yes he's capable of a hat-trick at any given moment but it feels like that's been said for too long now. The evidence right in front of our eyes is that Auba and Bale are the right picks at the moment.

Depends, do you think you can squeeze more out of it another time in terms of points?

This FH wouldn't just be for 3 extra players, assuming you'd switch some of the existing ones, not only that but the transfers you'd use to get the last few of those can be used for future planning if you FH

          I would play it probably

First of all get Barnes out of there. You will probably need to take some hits so i would also move off from Salah unless you're committed to holding him. You have 4 GW29 players which isnt a great position (i think the average will be 8) - You can go from Salah to Bale and own a key differential which is nice. with Barnes you need to evaluate whether you value having some money to spend across your team. Son, Saka, Mahrez, Foden and Mount would be the other replacements i would be looking at. hope this helps 🙂

        Kane - Vardy - DCL

        Dallas - Aina - H.Barnes

Have 2 FTs and 0.1 itb

        How is this plan looking?
GW28: Sterling ➡ Bale and save 1 FT
        GW29: Barnes & Vardy ➡ Son & Bamford/Antonio for 2 FTs

              couple of quick questions

What are the strategies for those free hitting in gw29 that would set you apart from the rest?

With 4 fixtures it is easy to put out any combo of available players...

                Triple Spurs attack?
                Triple Brighton defence?
                Go heavy on Leeds assets?
                All of the above?
                Any other suggestion?

Leeds are also fairly rubbish at defending set pieces - Dawson last week just the latest concession - the Fulham CBs have a plausible opportunity for an attacking return too.

Same for Graeme Souness' view, which he thinks would take away grey areas. I don't understand how the grey areas and millimeter-measurements would be made easier or reduced.

The only way I think it could work that way would be if defenders became much more conservative in trying to play offside and staying clearly behind the attacker.

But even then the chances are it would only reduce the number of close decisions - the really narrow ones would still exist in millimetres

Reducing the number of close decisions isn't a good thing imo. Fewer injustices, but each injustice is more injusticey. 😀

I can see how these are designed to produce more goals, as Q says below, but Arsenal, pundits, and people, in general, think this solves any VAR or offside issues is beyond me.

I personally see the logic of the Arsene proposal especially taken in conjunction with the zero tolerance of ball to hand in disallowing goals - that just doesn't add up.

It is still the case isn't it that there is zero tolerance for attackers but not defenders?

Oh I agree with your millimetres point. That I think is irreducible with VAR technology unless you introduce a margin for error. Bur even then you'll probably end up with disputes over the margin for error and whether it was inside it by millimetres

If the forward cannot use the part of his body offside to score a goal why should that be offside? Even if it hit it accidentally it would be a foul.

Paraphrased Arsene: "Maybe you're not offside as long as any part of your body that you can score with is in-line with the defender, rather than you're offside if any part of your body that you can score with is in front of the defender. That would sort out, maybe, all these discussions about millimeters of part of your body being in front of a defender."

Yes, but the millimeter discussions would simply change to being about whether someone is 'in-line' or 'behind' the defender or not. I don't understaaannnnd wahhhhh

                    You're right.
Still millimetres, but this way you additionally have to work out which part of body.
I personally like the idea of going by where the feet are. That way doesn't matter if you're leaning forward.

Good suggestion to limit the body part, but the millimetres issue is still an issue, and you still have to decide where the ankle starts.

It wouldn't, and would result in the ridiculous scenario of a player being blatantly offside like 99.999% of his body and having 0.001% of his heel in line with the defender and it being given as a goal

I'm all for goals, and if that's the rule then that's the new rule but fans would be fuming every time it happened imo

I’m a big advocate of some of this, but I would just go for the attackers feet. I don’t think someone leaning offside (or in some cases pointing offside) should be offside. But someone standing or running from an offside position should be. It’s much simpler.

It doesn't propose a change to the definition of which body parts can score a goal, nor does it say that it doesn't matter. Arsene says "any part of your body that you can score with is in-line with the defender" .... that includes your shoulder/sleeve.

If a players feet are onside or level with the last opposing player he should be deemed to be onside regardless if his head, arms, hips etc are a millimetre offside. Was it not the spirit of the offside rule to stop the attacker lurking offside to gain an advantage on the defender, to get to the passed ball quicker? He's only getting there quicker if his feet are offside but wrongly deemed to be onside. His upper body being offside isn't such an advantage for me. Maybe defending could improve too?

Regarding VAR and offside. I've always maintained that VAR shouldn't be used if it's not fit for purpose.

The way it's currently used for offside is a joke, and not fit for purpose, so it shouldn't be use (like this).

However, I do think it might be possible to have a fair and consistent way to decide whether someone is considered offside using the current technology. If my proposal isn't fit for purpose, either, or any other, then I don't think the technology should be used.

I actually see the measurement of body parts to be a secondary issue. I think a VAR can take a reasonable stab at that without too much crazy inconsistency.

The factors that contribute more to the inaccuracy, imo, are.

                        1) measuring the distance to the floor (I'm ignorant about this - it could be that they have a clever way to do it), since this can greatly change the line across the pitch.

                        2) Choosing the frame at which the ball was kicked with a relatively low frame rate (or at any frame rate, anyway), since the players can move more than millimeters away from each other in a frame (or several frames, since you have to decide when the ball is struck).

I don't know how to solve 1, and I don't believe that it would be solved by limiting offside to the feet, since the toeas and heels can be off the ground, and we don't have the tech to cope with that, any more than we do a head. Plus, feet can hang out in the air too, and you still need to define where the ankle starts, and pick out the studs on the camera, etc.

2, however, could be combatted by using a margin of error. Not in the same way that I think many here may envision it, which is simply to define a range of onsidedness within the current range of offsidedness (this not combatting the issue of measuring the millimetres). Rather to take the frame at which the ball is considered 'struck, and then the frame before and afterwards. If the attacker is considered onside in any of these frames, then he is considered onside overall. Generally speaking, I think this will allow marginal calls to be taken as offside, assuming there is any amount of lateral movement between players on the screen. It also gives the advantage to the attacker, which seems to be a winning phrase with the pundits and public. The only issue is the time it would take to do. Some of this could be automated, but again, if the tech isn't up to the task, then it's not ready.

That makes a huge amount of sense to me

Ignorant query. How fixed are frame rates? Do they cover a particular period of time or are they relatively random - depending on where the producer "cuts". My entirely ignorant supposition is that with modern technology the play can be cut at any given point.

I believe TV typically uses 25 frames per second in UK and 24 in US. However, unbeknownst to me, apparently, "VAR uses cameras than run at 50 frames per second, with one picture taken every 0.02 seconds." I wasn't aware of this, and I presume it means that VAR only use set cameras for offside, unless all the football video is captured at 50fps. I can't be bothered to research.

Anyway, yeah, so the VAR has to select 1 of these pictures to use to draw their lines. https://twitter.com/ben_rumsby/status/1163001872367702017

Okay so I think all broadcast cameras are operating at 50fps. Makes sense. Better for slo-mo replays and VAR. But still, they are pictures. You can't pause real-life; you can only select a picture from the 50 available slices each second.

That seems like a remarkably short time frame.

I like your logic here but wonder whether one frame either side is what we need. I have no idea whether play moves on sufficiently in 0.02 of a second to make any odds.

I'd take your principle and then try and work out how many frames needed to be looked at. I'm guessing it's pretty random in determining at which point the ball was kicked if you are looking at 0.02 of a second.

Despite playing brilliantly, I wouldn't recommend Christensen just yet. Silva is back now and can easily slot in.

Azpi & Mount are decent picks.

Wouldn't consider Jorginho, you'll only get the occasional penalty. Also, Mount took one recently too - last pen Jorginho too was when Mount was off the pitch, so can't say who is definitely first choice. Assume still Jorginho but you never know.

Havertz could be. Too early to tell. They'll be attacker rotation and that puts me off.

I completely forgot about silva. It seems Cancelo to Azipilicueta will be an easy switch for many.

Rudiger is still nailed imo. Rested this past week but has started 8/9.

Havertz is blinking on the radar. Considering him if he can start the next few PL games. Might buy him for GW30 vs WBA.

Good point I checked and Rudiger had a very long run of games from gw19-26.

The fact he is German and now has a German manager is another reason to consider him.

Tempted with the Rudiger and Azpilicueta double up in defence and maybe Mount in midfield.

Right... am I good to roll the FT & 3.2 ITB this week? Can then get a few more for BGW29, and then WC soon after... 🙂

                      3.9 Raphinha Dallas Johnson

Currently have 8 for the BGW if Johnson plays

Salah and Mee to Bale and Digne for free?

Gundogan, Salah and it's not close imo.

I'd say Mount plus 1 defender

Thanks - makes sense. Would like Christainsen to become a permanent fixture in the side. Would make it a lot easier.

Or should I just burn the transfer?

Your team is in good knick.

I'd probably think about doing Salah > Bale.

Scared that Salah might bite me back but this is the good time to ship after long weeks of patience.
