Chip Strategy

Why the Free Hit chip has differential power in FPL BGW29

Deploying a Free Hit could be a differential move for Fantasy Premier League managers in Blank Gameweek 29.

In our recent poll asking site users which chip they planned to use this weekend, just 20% of voters said they would be playing the one-week Wildcard.

And, interestingly, a total of 76.5% said they would be giving the Free Hit a miss in Blank Gameweek 29.

That is something of a new dynamic in Gameweeks such as this.

Every season sees the FA Cup quarter-finals create a very small round of Premier League fixtures and it is usually at this stage we see the most extensive usage of a Free Hit.

However, as you can see from the results above, 63.1% of voters are left without it for Blank Gameweek 29 having previously used it earlier this season.

Blank Gameweek 18 is the most likely round to have created this problem for managers when four matches were postponed and 62.9% of the top 10k at the time played their Free Hit.

Can Jesse Lingard follow up on his West Ham debut FPL haul 9

Meanwhile, 13.4% of our voters are looking ahead to later Gameweeks to use the chip this season.

The EFL Cup final and FA Cup semi-finals are the next rounds to interfere with the Premier League schedule, which could provide Free Hitters for a wider pool of players to make the most of.

Still, suggestions that Fantasy teams will all look the same in Blank Gameweek 29 or that this might soften the impact of a Free Hit are somewhat dispelled by the early results of this poll.

The fact that just 20% of voters are planning on using the chip this week means there are definitely opportunities for those will in possession of a Free Hit to make gains this week.

We have also consulted Fantasy Football Scout readers on how many players they can field for Blank Gameweek 29.

The results here perhaps indicate why there is a portion of managers opting to hold the Free Hit chip.

82.5% of the voters have indicated that they can field at least seven players this weekend, while 68.3% can get to eight active options with their transfers.

Eight is the most common number, with 22.0% of voters able to achieve this squad size for Blank Gameweek 29.

But 16.9% can get to 10 and 19.8% can get to nine.

Particularly interesting is the fact that 9.7% can reach 11 active players for Blank Gameweek 29 at the time of writing.

Those wondering how best to cover themselves for this round, either with their Free Hit or free transfers, should keep an eye on the current ownership figures.

That way, we can work out which players are likely to be most popular on Free Hits, or which players managers without it are likely to be carrying into Blank Gameweek 29.

Of particular note is the fact that the two players on top of this list, Son Heung-min (£9.6m) and Patrick Bamford (£6.7m), both have yellow flags to their names.

Gameweek 28 Scout Picks built on Spurs, Everton and Villa assets

Harry Kane (£11.4m) and Ollie Watkins (£6.6m) are commonly-owned forwards while Emiliano Martínez (£5.4m) has something of a monopoly on Fantasy goalkeeper jerseys.

Jack Grealish (£7.5m) could also have a significant impact on Blank Gameweek 29 if he gets fit in time considering he still sits in 18.0% of Fantasy squads.

Meanwhile, this week’s currently most-bought players Gareth Bale (£9.6m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.1m) are both in about 10% of teams.

Might as well and if one of the players you bring in bangs it should be worth it. For example 3 BHA players vs New could easily return 12+ points

Yeah but the upside is difficult to spot with these fixtures.... you might get lucky ofc if you punt on players like Maja or Maupay, Gross, Lookman, BHA defence... Arsenal players after EL match vs a rested in form WHU is definitely not looking great either...

No, probably just Bale and Reguillon for a hit to field 9 players. And that too depends on EL match and minutes. I might just bring Trossard in the end.

Im going to stick to my initial plan of 1 FT to field 10 players. If Son and/or Bamford confirmed out I might consider a -4 to replace one of them

Assuming most already have the likes of Kane & Co, there are probably only 2 to 3 additional players worth considering for a hit this week.

Any more than that isn't worthwhile imo.

Solid team for the Game week, holding to Veltman if wildcarding as he can rest on the bench for GW30 and defensive assets could hold more returns than attacking this gameweek

I totally disagree with this article, I think gains or the advantage for those playing the FH will be minimal if any. Fixtures are not great and everyone will own 80% of the same players. If Son and Bamford are out it limits even further your choices for returns. I dont see many differences between this GW and GW18 tbh...

    1. The Polymath

The differential is how many people without a FH will be taking additional hits to get more players.

    2. Vlekz
        3 years, 1 month ago

What are the kinds of returns you expecting by playing in 33? 30-40 points over the normal teams?
If Brighton (with 53% cs odds ) keep a CS, it's 12-15 points right there(triple Brighton)
Even teams that you are targeting in 33 won't have 70-80% odds, so it's all the same.
Just boils down to how the results actually pan out in which week(expectation vs reality)

Double or triple Liverpool and Leicester with the likes of Jota, Robbo, Mane, Vardy, Maddison, Barnes + a couple of Wolves players could give you a good rank boost. Heck, even Salah might be a differential Come GW33

Of course it can be measured. Pick a differential 11 on paper and after the week finishes, compare the points that paper 11 would have gotten vs your template non FH team.

No one will know if it is worth doing until it is too late though...

I meant its success cant be measured in terms of FHers vs Non FHers since the points gained and loss will be over multiple GWs.

      • fusen
        • 12 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

I think the whole point is you don't go for the current template and FH into a bit of a random differential 11 which could magic you up loads of points.

The downside is obviously that no one owns those other players already for a reason, so it's a huge gamble to try some rogue 11 this week that could end up even lower than the template 7 players most will go with

        1. Pompel
          • 10 Years
          3 years, 1 month ago

In favour of FH29, it has to be said that everyone will own a selection of template players but not all of them, so with FH you can cover all the bases, not missing a Watkins haul if you happened to own Antonio and vice versa. And Trossard+Dunk might provide you that an extra boost

        2. El Presidente
          • 4 Years

yeah I agree, but looking at the numbers of potential FH´s I doubt it will have a massive impact in OR for the vast majority of managers... I think, just like in GW18, your decision has to be guided by the number of players you will be able to field with hits vs the comparable downside of those using FH. I had 4 players available for GW18 so it was a no brainer using the FH. This GW the same, if you have up to 7 players use the FH if more than 7 just take a hit or 2 and ride it out...

So with Spurs and City blanking in 33 (along with Fulham and Saints) and no WC, it probably makes sense to start losing their players - obviously not Spurs this week but certainly City. Cancelo the first to go > Cresswell

The only problem with that is that City have some great fixtures either side of the blank, whilst Spurs have some good ones immediately after.

I think the best option is to keep one of KDB/Gundo plus Kane and a City defender and bench them in 33.

I agree with this and is my current plan for WC31. Currently looking to keep Gundo and Stones and sell Cancelo. Prefer Stones upside to Dias being nailed. I will need a decent playing bench to cover City rotation

Or you could take out a City player just for GW33 and then bring them back in.

I'm not a fan of the hokey-cokey in the first half of the season, but around BGW/DGW it's reasonable to get players with fixtures when others blank.

          I agree.
Sometimes people in lofty sporting positions rise to a level of authority that transcends their sport, like LeBron James or Martina Navratilova.
Sometimes you end up with a Zlatan or a Djokovic - brilliant, relentless, but a bit Dunning-Kruger when they step outside of their sport.

they will all score equally - I think it'll be tight for final points. Could all get goals, assists and BP's and could all also blank. The auba/Lingard pick is a choice you have to make over Arsenal or West Ham success.

I would go Bale on that note as he is the differential in terms of one against the other. Plus Son being potentially out could see him more vital for the win.

Bale probably has the lowest floor but the highest ceiling, so if you're going for it, I'd take him.

This is the team at the moment:

      Martinez
      Dallas Veltman
      Saka* Auba Lingard
      Kane Antonio Bamford*

Probably have 8 players (good news about Bamford, not about Saka) but was thinking of a -8 to add two more.

I was thinking Lookman and Tierney? Any thoughts on these two - or maybe just go with the 8 and take no hits?

Depends on WC strategy. If you have to spend a transfer shipping them out, it's not even worth considering.

Nothing concrete. Only going off Bamford dead leg and Saka hamstring news. Usually the former is quicker to heal.

With no FH it feels a bit like judgement day this weekend.

I dont want to have to bring in players that will fluck up the rest of the season plans. I think I might field 10 at a push with my 2FT's.

Brighton attack seems best placed with Trossard. If Son is ok it'll be much much better long term. However the recent reports have S.Korea nominating him in their international squad at present. Knowing Jose, I think he'll force the retraction by not fielding him, regardless of fitness, in order to ensure he doesnt travel and is back for Newcastle and the push from gw30.

I just dont see any victory this weekend.

If i end up -8 with only 9 i wont be happy. I think ZERO hits may ensure a green arrow, as so many will scramble to field XI. GG's to you though bro.

I have 5 (6 if Bamford) plays and have 2 free transfers. So 7 or 8 players. I don't have Son, so if he is fit then I need to take a minus 4 to get him in just to protect myself a little. A horrible game week

      Dias / Stones / Cresswell / Digne /  Dallas
      Salah / Bruno / Gündogan / Raphinha / Soucek
      Kane / DCL / Watkins

      WC available

      B. Stones/Digne to Dunk, Salah to Bale

Out of curiosity has anyone ever pulled a worse WC than this?

My GW3 WC got me 38 points and 30 points in the next 2 weeks and sent me to 4.750,000 just a few points off rock bottom.

          Back down to 500k

Have been on an extremely poor captain run and made some poor punts in the last 2. Made the decision I'd go big and bold in the attempt to claw it back in the run in.

Opposite policy from the past 2 seasons where I played it quite tight towards the end and let other teams implode around me to haul myself up to 100k and below.

I've quite often had a bad first week, but usually comes good after 3-4 weeks and makes up the immediate red arrow. I think this season was notorious for wildcards in weeks 2-4 being awful. Those who wildcarded week 5 when Spurs were the obvious picks shot up the ranks.

I almost completely nailed my week 1 squad had I held a week longer of course.

Have been looking at a few other teams and console myself that from week 5 on I've been relatively competitive!

Two seasons running the squad that I picked for week one would have had more points at Christmas (with no changes) than the points I actually have. Last year I would have ghost shipped into the top 10k by Christmas.
I seem to be incapable of saving my WC past week 4 but maybe I'll actually take the lesson on board for next year.

Seriously contemplating a no WC policy next time unless necessary.

I play an attacking game anyway and have a decent transfer record. My hits generally pay in the short to mid term. My WC record is absolutely appalling by contrast. 3 of the last 4 have backfired badly.

Just take the hits and keep the core team?

The evidence suggests that you don't even need to take hits.
I spend hours pouring over fixtures searching for long term under-priced proven performers in my week 1 set up and then for some reason WC week 4 to get all the players who got lucky in the first 3 weeks - it makes no sense.

Think I know myself too well to expect absence of relatively regular hits.

The thought is that if you're willing to take hits why bother with the WC at all unless in extremis. Just leave it to GW18/19 and avoid the minus 4/8 then?

Does anyone else get irrationally annoyed when teams of the week / season would not function as an actual team? Caused by lack of defensive players and players in unnatural positions. Like this: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56405903. If you want to list your best performers then list them, but don’t place them in a meaningless formation!

Going for it with the FH chip:

      Meslier (Sanchez)
      Dallas, Dunk, Cresswell (Lascelles, Aina)
      Auba, Bale, Lingard, Raphinha (Moura)
      Kane, Laca, Antonio

      A. Raphinha, Moura, or Laca? (Or maybe Watkins?)
      B. Dunk, Lascelles, or Aina?
      C. Meslier or Sanchez?

Got almost the same FH team draft. I'm not fully decided yet, but here's where I went

        A. Raphinha & Laca. Not considering Watkins without Grealish fit
        B. Dunk & Lascelles
        C. Sanchez (This is difficult as I also fancy Marti save points, but doubt CS)

I like your lineup, but debating Lascelles as a starter over Dunk

        Neither?

I'd get Adams or Iheanacho and forget about this week if that's what's driving your decision.

Southampton have goals in them and a tidy run and until Maddison and Barnes come in then Iheanacho has great form.

            I quite like Adams

He has a really iffy consistency record of course but he's very benchable and allows you to improve elsewhere. Doesn't get 33 may be an issue but he has enough nice ones to have him as 7th/8th attacker perhaps.

Iheanacho is the more logical choice I suppose but he's never been nailed and could potentially lose his spot when Maddison is back just in time for Leicester's best ones.

Thinking here that 4-5-1/4-42 is a viable formation for the run in, Put Kane up top and then decide whether Adams/Iheanacho is more likely than your 5th mid.

Yes, all unlucky tbh. Kane did hit the post also and on another day Salah would have scored. Should those matches be replayed manyt times, all would do much better on average.

How many games does Salah have to not score to simply be considered in bad form and form continues until it stops, so he is going to continue not scoring until at some point (of which no one knows when as that is form) he will score again.

You don't buy a player out of form, so why keep one out of form? We have no idea how long this period of bad form will continue, but it has kept going on and on and on, for 12 million even if one or two goals fairly recently is still terrible value.

I'm very happily selling him this week and then will get in Jota instead.
