Interview

Meet the Manager – Hall of Fame number two reveals his Gameweek 31 wildcard plans

In Fantasy Football Scout’s Meet the Manager series, Joe chats to a Fantasy Premier League manager with a stellar track record of success.

This time he is joined by Tom Stephenson, who has shown a remarkable level of consistency over his 13 campaigns. Make sure you watch the latest instalment below.

Across his career he has four top 5,000 finishes and is in a strong position to gain his fifth this time around.

Meanwhile, he has one further finish in the top 10,000 and has not ended a season outside the top 40,000 in his last dozen campaigns.

This incredible run has propelled him to second in our Live Hall of Fame list of some the best ever FPL managers.

Among the stand-out moments in their chat is when Tom not only shares his plans for the remainder of the season, but also gives a sneak preview of the first draft of his Gameweek 31 Wildcard.

Can this strategic deployment of the game’s most valuable chip ensure Tom finishes the season strongly once again?

Elsewhere, Tom reveals his top tips for a strong finish and why patience is very much a virtue.

The last year has seen the world, including FPL, turned upside down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Tom chats about he has managed to maintain strong Gameweek scores amid the postponements, surprise announcements and player quarantines.

Last hit before I WC in 31!

    Martinez ¦ Forster
    Reguilon Cancelo* Coufal
    Bale Auba* Bruno Lingard
    Kane Bamford Antonio
    ¦ Saka Veltman Holding

Cancelo, Auba -> Alonso, KdB (-4)

    Any better punts?

Can’t decide between Alonso or Azpi

    1. Thomas Magnum
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 20 days ago

Neither, guess you go go with Alonso if you have a strong bench and can accept he will miss random games, and chances are you'll miss a Chelsea CS when that happens. If not play safe and go Azpi and hope for clean sheets and bonus points on top

      1. Babit1967
        • 7 Years

Yeah that’s my thinking, bench is quite strong but also have Cancelo who is due the odd benching

        1. Thomas Magnum
          • 8 Years

In that case I guess depends if you play 3 or 4atb. I guess it may work out though if somehow they rotate starts, when one is benched the other starts and vice versa, but not sure how likely that is. All depends how much you like risk taking, could end with a week where they combine for 0 or 22 points

He's worth considering but would rather one of the more expensive Chelsea defenders or even Dallas ahead of him, although if your budget is tight then he's a decent option presuming he starts

A few benching issues - but may as well stock up on good assets for the rest of the season

    Salah bruno jota neto saka
    Kane antonio iheanacho

Safely template - dislike spread of funds.

Neto over Raphinha doesn't add up to me unless there are fixtures in 31-34 you definitely play Neto in. Worth remembering too that Leeds scored against both City and Liverpool early season.

What happens if/when Spurs double in 32?

      1. Flynny

Cheers. I'd revise this and bring in son if spurs double in 32.

Neto has great fixtures 31 to 35 and can then swap to raphinha when his fixtures ease

Happy to bench cresswell until hammers fixtures ease

Guess this is a starting point. Thanks for your comment

        Yes bought him at 4.5

I wouldn't rotate but would simply keep as he has a double at some stage

It's a luxury keep I'd only consider if I had cash spare

Cheers for the input lads! Keen to keep hold of Cresswell as had him since beginning of the season so have a lot of value tied up. Other than Chelsea their fixtures are decent from gw31?
Son to jota might make sense to allow an upgrade up top but thinking that spurs might go on a tear now out of Europe and focused on top 4 finish
Kdb is the high value player to easily make a switch to another premium if needed plus he may get odd rest but tends to play bulk of Premier league games?

  17. Flynny
    • 9 Years
    3 years, 20 days ago

I've started thinking today about mine too. See initial draft above

Yours looks good. I'm avoiding kdb though as expect him to be rotated - probably in the gw31 game

Don't know why you would have vydra

For me a lot will boil down to if I want a front line of Kane, vardy iheanacho . Or if i want to go cheaper than vardy and spread the cash

    1. IN SANE IN DE BRUYNE

Cheers flynny. Vidra is just a cheap throwaway so I don't have too much budget tied up on the bench. I could have gundo or mahrez instead of kdb and upgrade vidra to rich, dcl or Antonio which is a possibility. Probably not Antonio as I have lingard to cover WH

HoF needs an overhaul. The recency bias is weighted too heavily.

I'm sure Tom is a great manager but I don't understand how he's 2nd in live HoF with 4 x top 5k and one other top 10k.

I also have 4 x top 5k and one other top 10k but I've dropped from 70th to 140th in live HoF just because I'm having an awful season this time around.

I demand an interview. Preferably by Oprah and preferably on a balmy, sun dappled veranda.

Hof is a type of specialism in failure ala Arsene Wenger and his top 4s every season. I wonder how the original winner (before disqualification) from last season is getting on this season (if he's playing).

    2. thegaffer82

      Serious question -

      Who cares about HoF?

Can't say I've ever even looked at it once.

No idea if I'm on there or not. If so, I don't care where I am. If not, I don't know or care how to get on there

Serious answer - ego/ narcissism. I certainly do care about it, as do plenty of others but I get why people think it's a silly concept (but they're usually the one's with poor records).

I had a quick look and you're not in it as you need to join the FFS public or members league to get a HoF ranking.

I think it's because a single season ranked in the top 10,000 - even ranked 1st - can be put down to luck whereas a consistent 10 years' worth of high finishes suggests a degree of skill. It's a good way for people who are good at the game to compare themselves against others.

Personally I have never looked at it but then I have never finished higher than about 25k!

    3. fusen

I think the article intro above does this person a disservice. The real stand out aspect which is shown in the video interview is that he has never finished below 40k since 2008. So although 'top 5000' is mentioned, there are a load of 13k or 22k etc finishes in the list which are realistically as equally as impressive nowadays.

Why bring in 2 Pool for the Arsenal game out of interest?

And, more pertinently, why did you do the early transfers? Can't see what you stood to gain from doing it early at all...

Haven't checked price risers for ages, so I'm guessing it's to do with that. But money not an issue this season so it's not really a convincing argument if that is the reason...

As mentioned separately above, two errors should be corrected in the article

"Across his career he has for top 5,000 finishes and is in a strong position to gain his fifth this time around.

Meanwhile, he has one further finish in the top 10,0000 and has not ended a season outside the top 40,000 in his last dozen campaigns."

    'for top' and '10,0000'.

So what ppls with WC and FH doing ?
WC GW32 and then use FH when is great chance for DGW, right ?

I'm thinking about similar strategy. Holding FH for post 33 GW's. If we get an additional DGW we can target it ...

I really liked this interview. Clear and concise on how he plays the game and some good pointers.

Also reassuring that my wildcard is similarly setup where I'm going with a strong 15 purposely to play some of them in the next couple of games and then rotate players from the bench to the first 11 for the second half of the remaining games.

I also feel not many HoF interviews have pushed the idea of 'every point counts' as was mentioned with the idea of hits talked about here.

All of those missed points from things like yellow cards and midfielders losing cleansheet points really do rack up by the end of the season. Whether it is mini leagues being won by 10 points or the 20 point different equating to a 50,000 rank drop in the overall ranks, you really need every point you can get.

1 if you are worried and want to protect your rank

2 if you're willing to take a little bit of a gamble and see if you can move away from the pack.

I'm going from 1 to 2 using my wildcard and I realistically don't see there being much if a different in the total points by the end of the season. It is close enough that either will do well but I want to try and make up ground and so Jota over Salah is the key aspect I'm focusing on

That would be my choice. Jota is in red hot form, he scores headers now too. Even if Liverpool progress in semi finals, I think he's the first name on the sheet in that team. Occasional rest is ok, but I don't believe he'll be rotated too much.

Gundo, even with a lot of rotation, he's a keeper for me, I think it would be a mayor risk to get rid for someone like Neto. He's the main goal threat in the team.

Considering the big hitters, it's always about captaincy as much as I am concerned, and KDB would be just one week pick for me, for that Leeds game, and I would swap to Salah. I would use free transfers as much as I can to get captains and target fixtures, and not to move defenders and value players.

Are Kabak or Phillips nailed ?

I don't even think Klopp knows himself.

As long as Pool are shipping goals left, right and centre, I don't think any CB pairing is safe.

Once (if) they find the right formula, we may see the line-up start to settle down

Kabak and Phillips have only started 3 games together. That has esulted in 3 clean sheets, so that suggests the right formula may have now been stumpled upon.
Plus, the obvious improvement to the front 3 with fabinho back in midfield means the Kabak/Phillips combo has every chance of being the one going forward.
IMO, Phillips looks a great shout in FPL for only 4m.

Kabak, probably, Phillips, without bias, no, but he is worth the risk for 4.0 imo. I think they'll continue to play together, they have 3 clean sheets in last 3 games. There's always a risk Phillips would be dropped and Fabinho moved in the backline, but with Henderson out, I believe Fabinho's contribution in the middle outweighs the one he has at the CB. My first choice would be Phillips, then Kabak, and although Trent has improved in form a bit, I just wouldn't pay that much if I don't expect regular clean sheets and frequent assist on top of it.

I have both triple Leeds and Spurs, and in 31. they play City and United respectively. So, fixtures turn, and as sooner it's played the impact is bigger. It's just eight gameweeks from there until the end. Blanks and doubles could put spanner in works, but I wouldn't keep the wildcard until the 35. or 36. - 37.

Some were planning to use BB this week instead of DGW (since their is no guarantee of that happening), then using WC to invest cash in starting XI.

As of now we don't really know when DGW announcement will happen, keeping WC till GW32-33 is a decent idea if your current team can survive till then.

I would like to take advantage of fixtures swing and add some fresh players to my team.

What would your ideal defence be for the remainder of the season?

There are a fair few defenders I like the look of. I don't particularly want to get rid of Días and Stones prior to playing Leeds and Leicester whose defending of set plays has been so questionable but after that. Then there are the likes of TAA, Azpi, Rüdiger, Shaw, Phillips and perhaps a Leicester defender for that nice run who I'd like.

Veltman, Digne and Coufal all on the chopping block for me soon.

Coady, Phillips, Stones, Fofana, Cresswell/Shaw. I would be thinking of getting rid of Stones too. I would get Mendy from Chelsea probably. Other than Alonso, I can't see much attacking threat in others (I could be wrong though), and he's not nailed anyway.

      A Chelsea DFer (or two)
A City DFer - Dias most nailed
      Shaw
Then a 4.5-5.0mil DFer (I actually like Coufal for this spot)
Veltman (perma bench except Sheff Utd game)

I'll probably get him, I don't think the fixtures look bad at all until the end of the season and I've been guilty of underestimating West Ham and Cresswell in particular this season.

I went with Coufal over him earlier in the season as I thought he was a good pick but not enough to justify the extra cost, I was wrong and then ended up with 10m+ itb shortly afterwards to rub it in even more.

    Til end of season?

    Dias
    Rudiger/Azpi
    Shaw
TAA/Robbo/Phillips (pool have the best fixture run in)

5th defender would be Coady up until gw34 or 35 then probably replaced with a West Ham defender after

Are people more or less interested in Vardy if the Leicester mids are back?

When Leicester attack looked a good call from GW17 or so on it was all really about the mids. Historically his GI has been fantastic but it's been nothing special at all since GW17 and if you exclude the SHU fixture it disappears to almost vanishing point since GW19. His record since GW19 really rests on just that one fixture when the mids were absent.

Maddison might improve him but Barnes? Possible that Barnes reduces GI as an alternative - and perhaps better - target for Maddison?

Personally can’t see myself captaining him once so I don’t think so.

Kane/Son/Bruno/Salah and possibly Auba/City mid are better shouts for the armband in the remaining weeks imo. But he’s a good differential

      • 5 Years

Very much thinking of getting Maddison in from 31 - no WC.

He feels to me like the one who is most likely to be at the heart of anything good that Leicester do in their positive fixtures. Get the cs and extra goal point bonus too and that possibly outweighs bargain basement Iheanacho who is way less nailed.

      Only as it stands

We just need the GW32 fixtures to be put back into midweek in all likelihood. There's some chance anyway Southampton may get Spurs and not scheduled Palace to create DGW but that's it likely
