Is a triple-up on Chelsea’s defence a good idea and do we need three Spurs assets?

Sitting just outside the top 1k heading into the final quarter of the season, Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy looks at a number of burning questions facing FPL managers after the March international break.

Chelsea Defensive Triple-Up

Who are the stand-out FPL assets at Tuchel's Chelsea? 7

Given their recent defensive returns, it’s understandable that FPL managers are looking to double, or even in some cases triple, up on Chelsea’s defence.

Their upcoming fixtures are certainly looking appealing, with West Brom (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton (h), West Ham (a) and Fulham (h) to come.

For my own team, I already own Antonio Rüdiger (£4.7m) and am looking to add Edouard Mendy (£5.2m) to my squad. I’d provide a word of caution on the triple-up, though. While it looks good for the next few weeks, and I’m sure it’s something that Gameweek 31 Wildcarders will consider, you also need to think ahead about how to get out of it when the fixtures turn in Gameweek 35. You may not want to be lumbered with three defenders at that point and it might be easier to manage by avoiding it right now.

There are lots of other teams and players with good fixtures both in the short term and up until the end of the season which might work well, without getting stuck on a defensive triple-up on one team (something that also blocks the potential for bringing in an attacker, should you want to).

Kieran Tierney (£5.3m) is someone that I’ve already added to my team. Between Gameweeks 31 and 38, Arsenal play six sides that are in the bottom nine for expected goals (xG) so far this season.

yes def keep Lingard for this week, do you still have WC?

I might go Bruno this week then WC and get KDB ... i mean you'd think BHA is a better fixture for Bruno than lei is for Kevin ?

Re Bruno vs KDB I think it'll be close because KDB will likely play false 9 IMO.

Wolves I'm not sure at all. Their defensive stats aren't great at all.

Leicester maybe but you get much more attacking potential with Shaw and they are all more expensive or same price as Shaw.

West Ham's next 3-4 fixtures look tough but good options after GW33.

Dias isn't going anywhere. Not sure about Cancelo or Stones with rotation.

I like Chelsea, City & United for my 3 defenders.

Still can't decide whether to BB this week or not, any help is very much appreciated.

    A) Get it done with BB ( Bale, Son, Grealish, Cancelo and Gundagon)
    - WC31 to catch the fixture swing and get strong first 11
    B) Delay both BB and WC further to BB in a DGW

    A or B plz

Leno Lloris looks great on paper but will it transfer to grass? Despite fixtures they're two defences I'm deeply suspicious of - both more than capable of leaking goals when they shouldn't hence low clean sheet counts.

No confidence at al in the Vardy call. There's a huge reliance being placed on the SHU fixture - his GI since GW17 disappears almost completely if you look past that one fixture - it's all been about the mids and Iheanacho. I'd do the Forster Bruno Antonio conversion myself.

Yeah vardy vs Bruno will be a tough call. The issue with the conversion is letting go for lloris so I will need to find a 3rd spurs player (Reg over alonso) but don't think reg is nailed

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 19 days ago

Not convinced by the need of a 3rd Spurs player for that double especially if it's a defender. Both Everton and Southampton have goals in them - see City Southampton. The one fairly imminent fixture I'd really want Spurs defence for is 34 the other side of BGW.

Lloris Leno does look great on paper doesn't it? But Mendy could yet get a DGW if they win in the semi and in any event I suspect he'll closely match the best of the two North London clubs.

Curious what people think about Jota game time and what he might or might not do Mo productivity.

There's very little data to go on for him given his extensive injury lay off. Does he simply replace Firmino? If he does come in does he make Mo a better or worse option or is there no effect? My memory of him from Wolves was that he was fairly negligible as a provider.

    Torres
    Kezman
    Mutu

      Zola was class at Chelsea.
Chelsea didn’t ruin Mutu. Mutu ruined himself.

When you analyse it down it almost comes to Diego Costa and Didier Drogba on one side of the balance sheet and every other signing on the other.

All of that lot were ruined before they got to Chelsea bar Zola. Carry on believing that rubbish if it makes you happy.
